  • How do you plan for starting a new web system?

    I've been creating more and more systems recently and I find more and more planning and preparation I do before starting the project. I determine what libraries or frameworks I will be using, what languages, the basic architecture of how the site will flow, etc. I've also heard of other design processes such as hanging styrofoam balls to show where classes are and how they relate, which is a process I've never heard of nor do I know how it works. Is there any software that helps with this process? Are there any guidelines or steps or do you have a recommended set of steps or guidelines that you follow when designing a new project?

  • Does anyone know of any good tutorials for using the APIs from Amazon WeB Services, namely CloudWatc

    Hi, I have been wrestling with Amazon's CloudWatch API with limited success. Does anyone know of any good resources (other than amazon's api docs) for using the APIs. I have tried to run them using the PHP library for CloudWatch but get nothing but error codes. I am configuring the GetMetricStatisticsSample.php file as follows: $request = array(); $endTime = date("Y-m-d G:i:s"); $yesterday = mktime (date("H"), date("i"), date("s"), date("m"), date("d")-1, date("Y")); $startTime = date("Y-m-d 00:00:00", $yesterday); $request["Statistics.member.1"] = "Average"; $request["EndTime"] = $endTime; $request["StartTime"] = $startTime; $request["MeasureName"] = "CPUUtilization"; $request["Unit"] = "Percent"; invokeGetMetricStatistics($service, $request); But this returns "Caught Exception: Internal Error Response Status Code: 400 Error Code: Error Type: Request ID: XML:" I have also tried from command line as follows - set JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05 set AWS_CLOUDWATCH_HOME=C:\AmazonWebServices\API_tools\CloudWatch-1.0.0.24 set PATH=%AWS_CLOUDWATCH_HOME%\bin mon-list-metrics but get C:|Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command... any suggestions? cheers

  • Returning all "positions" of a list

    I Have a list with "a" and "b" and the "b"'s are somewhat of a path and "a"'s are walls. Im writing a program to make a graph of all the possible moves. I got the code running to check the first "b" for possible moves, but i have NO Idea how im going to find all "b"'s , even less check them all without repeating. Major issue im having is getting the tuple coordinates of the "b"'s out of the list. Any pointers/tips?

  • Best way to convert log files (*.txt) to web-friendly files (*.html, *.jsp, etc)?

    I have a bunch of log files which are pure text. Here is an example of one... Overall Failures Log SW Failures - 03.09.2010 - /logs/swfailures.txt - 23 errors - 24 warnings HW Failures - 03.09.2010 - /logs/hwfailures.txt - 42 errors - 25 warnings SW Failures - 03.10.2010 - /logs/swfailures.txt - 32 errors - 27 warnings HW Failures - 03.10.2010 - /logs/hwfailures.txt - 11 errors - 31 warnings These files can get quite large and contain a lot of other information. I'd like to produce an HTML file from this log that will add links to key portions and allow the user to open up other log files as a result... SW Failures - 03.09.2010 - <a href="/logs/swfailures.txt">/logs/swfailures.txt</a> - 23 errors - 24 warnings This is greatly simplified as I would like to add many more links and other html elements. My question is -- what is the best way to do this? If the files are large, should I generate the html before serving it to the user or will jsp do? Should I use perl or other scripting languages to do this? What are your thoughts and experiences?

    I just started C++ but have some prior knowledge to other languages (vb awhile back unfortunately), but have an odd predicament. I disliked using so many IF statements and wanted to use switch/cases as it seemed cleaner, and I wanted to get in the practice.. But.. Lets say I have the following scenario (theorietical code): while(1) { //Loop can be conditional or 1, I use it alot, for example in my game char something; std::cout << "Enter something\n -->"; std::cin >> something; //Switch to read "something" switch(something) { case 'a': cout << "You entered A, which is correct"; break; case 'b': cout << "..."; break; } } And that's my problem. Lets say I wanted to exit the WHILE loop, It'd require two break statements? This obviously looks wrong: case 'a': cout << "You entered A, which is correct"; break; break; So can I only do an IF statement on the 'a' to use break;? Am I missing something really simple? This would solve a lot of my problems that I have right now.

  • Inserting Record into multiple tables No Common ID

    OK so I have two tables, MEDIA and BUSINESS. I want it set up so the forms to input into them are on the same page. MEDIA has a row that is biz_id that is the id of BUSINESS. So MEDIA is really a part of BUSINESS. HOW do I insert/add these into their tables without a common ID because I haven't yet made the record for business? I'm sorry I didn't really word this very much... You might need more clarification to answer properly and I'll be glad to give any more info. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  • web-development: how do you usually handle the "under costruction" page"?

    hi, I was wondering what's the best way to switch a website to a temporary "under costruction" page and switch it back to the new version. For example, in a website, my customer decided to switch from Joomla to Drupal and I had to create a subfolder for the new CMS, and then move all the content to the root folder. 1) Moving all the content back to the root folder always create some problems with file permissions, links, etc... 2) Creating a rewrite rule in .htaccess or forward with php is not a solution because another url is shown including the top folder. 3) Many host services do not allow to change the root directory, so this is not an option since I don't have access to apache config file.     I need to store data in memory where I map one or more key strings to an object, as follows: "green", "blue" -> object1 "red", "yellow" -> object2 I need to be able to efficiently receive a list of objects, where the strings match some boolean criteria, such as: ("red" OR "green") AND NOT "blue" I'm working in Java, so the ideal solution would be an off-the-shelf Java library. I am, however, willing to implement something from scratch if necessary. Anyone have any ideas? I'd rather avoid the overhead of an in-memory database if possible, I'm hoping for something comparable in speed to a HashMap (or at least the same order of magnitude).

This way the code would only need to be done for the latest version of the browser, but users could still have the functionality of the older version and not be forced to do major updates? I am sure there will be some major flaws in this, and I would like you to tell me what they are! -Obviously, people may not want this as often auto-updating is frowned upon, however Chrome does it (or at least, they used to); Without a manual check, Chrome will update itself automatically, Google said. "Google Chrome will automatically checks for updates approximately every five hours. If an update is available, it will be downloaded and applied at the next browser restart," Google said. -there is still the problem of getting users from the really old ones onto the any new browsers that have this functionality -To prevent exploits in terms of updates, maybe they could have a 7 day opt-in period before being pushed out to everyone?

    Hello, this questions may be stupid, but i dont really see how to resolve it : lest say that in my application, i have a user. This user edit his profile, and need to edit his avatar. Where should i store the avatar file? first of all i was saving all the files in src\main\webapp\resources , but each time i redeploy that folder empties. so i dedide to place in an other location : c:\wwwdir\resources, but i can't link local resources from remote pages, so i was not able to display any avatar . any idea? advise? link?

    Here's what I have so far: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <location path="osb"> <system.webServer> <httpRedirect enabled="true" exactDestination="true" destination="http://50.63.54.135/app/osb" httpResponseStatus="Permanent" /> </system.webServer> </location> </configuration> The above redirect works, but it takes me to http://http//50.63.54.135/app/osb instead of just http://50.63.54.135/app/osb This produces an 404 error. I tried to remove "http://" from destination. Same effect. What am I missing ?

  • How to keep the first result of a function from Prolog?

    I need to write a customized function that will be called many times by other fixed functions. In this function, at the first called time, it will return the total number of lines of a file. The second called time of this function, forward, will return the number of lines in small sections of this file. My question is how I keep the first returned result(total number of lines of a file) and use it for the next called times of my function. I need to write or declare any thing only in this function(not in the caller). Something like this: myFunction(Input, MyResult, FirstResult) :- calculateInputFunction(Input, Result), !, MyResult is Result, ... . The problem is, every time myFunction is called, it receives different Input and returns different MyResult. But I would like to keep the first MyResult to use for next called times of myFunction.     Hello, First of all sorry that I could not think of a more descriptive title. What I want to do is the following using only SQL: I have some lists of strings, list1, list2 and list3. I have a dataset that contains two interesting columns, A and B. Column A contains a TransactionID and column B contains an ItemID. Naturally, there can be multiple rows that share the same TransactionIDs. I need to catch those transactions that have at least one item ID that exists whithin each list (list1, list2 AND list3). I also need to count how many times does that happen for each transaction. I hope that makes enough sense, perhaps I will be able to explain it better with a clear head. Thanks in advance
