• Possible disk IO issue

  I've been trying to really figure out what my IOPS are on my DB server array and see if it's just too much. The array is four 72.6gb 15k rpm drives in RAID 5. To calculate IOPS for RAID 5 the following formula is used: (reads + (4 * Writes)) / Number of disks = total IOPS. The formula is from MSDN. I also want to calculate the Avg Queue Length but I'm not sure where they are getting the formula from, but i think it reads on that page as avg que length/number of disks = actual queue. To populate that formula I used the perfmon to gather the needed information. I came up with this, under normal production load: (873.982 + (4 * 28.999)) / 4 = 247.495. Also the disk queue lengh of 14.454/4 = 3.614. So to the question, am I wrong in thinking this array has a very high disk IO? Edit I got the chance to review it again this morning under normal/high load. This time with even bigger numbers and IOPS in excess of 600 for about 5 minutes then it died down again. But I also took a look at the Avg sec/Transfer, %Disk Time, and %Idle Time. These number were taken when the reads/writes per sec were only 332.997/17.999 respectively. %Disk Time: 219.436 %Idle Time: 0.300 Avg Disk Queue Length: 2.194 Avg Disk sec/Transfer: 0.006 Pages/sec: 2927.802 % Processor Time: 21.877 Edit (again) Looks like I have that issue solved. • Starting programs from terminal then exiting terminal exits started programs?

  I really was unsure how to phrase the question title. What I mean is that when I use the terminal to start a program, most of the time when the terminal is closed it also exits the programs started from it. Now this makes sense if we look at it from a hierarchical standpoint of the terminal being the parent process which spawns child processes, and any halt of the parent causes subsequent halting of the children as well. However, I've noticed this to not always be the case. For example, I downloaded Sublime Text Editor and created a symlink in PATH. I can start this program by issuing a sublime command from the terminal, but subsequent closure of the terminal program does nothing to sublime. However, other times either the child process that was started it also closed or it hangs up and causes problems. tl;dr: Is it always the case that programs started from a closed parent process will be closed when the parent is exited? And if so, is there way to start a program from the terminal and then close the terminal without exiting the started process? The whole point here is to start programs from the terminal so I do not overly-populate my desktop with symlinks.

  I've searched serverfault and found this question pop-up quite a bit. Unfortunately others problems aren't exactly like mine, and because I'm a true beginner I wanted some more "specific to me" help. If you don't mind. I just set-up a new computer for a user. Copied over her auto-populate and archive emails. Her email, for the most part, works fine. But when she tries to send anything to [email protected] she gets the #550 5.1.1 error. If she uses the exchange webapp she does not have the issue. I can send email to BSMITH, and so can everyone else. The user, as far as I can tell from the EMC reports, is the only person having emails sent back to them and only from BSMITH. I have googled the crap out of this, and attempted some of the solutions to no avail. I've looked for the bmith account in the disabled accounts and copied and attempted to add "IMCEAEX-_O=CHILD+20STUDY+20CENTER_OU=FIRST+20ADMINISTRATIVE+20GROUP_CN=RECIPIENTS_CN=BSMITH@mydomain.com" as an X500 email. I honestly am just following instructions though and I don't really understand what it is I'm doing. • Getting PAM/user info into php - something like Net_Finger instead of a db?

  I've got a very small user group who just need to login, upload, check and then move specific files to a different area when ready. Right now, I use the nginx PAM auth module to log them in against their unix accounts. As their login is their home directory, I've already got the info to send the uploads to the right area - one line of php and no database needed. But I'm maintaining a separate DB just so PHP can welcome them, grab their email and send them an email when processed. Yes, sure I could use nosql or sqlite instead so as to not need a whole mysql install. But it occurred to me that as I've got all these blank user fields for phone numbers I could populate with any data, that I could use something like php's Net_Finger. Which failed for me with: sudo pear install Net_Finger Starting to download Net_Finger-1.0.1.tgz (1,618 bytes) ....done: 1,618 bytes could not extract the package.xml file from "/build/buildd/php5-5.5.9+dfsg/pear-build-download/Net_Finger-1.0.1.tgz" Download of "pear/Net_Finger" succeeded, but it is not a valid package archive Error: cannot download "pear/Net_Finger" At which point I thought I'd stop, and take a ServerFault reality check - is this a really bad/dangerous/stupid idea just to stop me having to maintain details in two places rather than one? It there a better way? Googling shows that it's not an oft-asked thing, so perhaps with good reason?

• How can I extract data from Toshiba Satellite with a dead Windows installation?

  I've got a Toshiba Satellite (unknown model number but bought early 2010) running Windows Vista which throws a kernel error on boot. We don't have the restore/recovery CD any more to restore the Windows partition. I have managed to boot to a Live CD version of Ubuntu 10.10 and have mounted the internal hard drive (which takes nearly 8 minutes). I suspect that the hard drive is malfunctioning, however, because copy tasks of even 30 megs of data to an attached and mounted USB flash drive takes over an hour, and some files are mysteriously inaccessible (not a permissions issue). When browsing folders, it takes many minutes to populate the folder window even with a single tiny file. During the copy tasks, the hard disk sounds like it tries to sleep several times in rapid succession, then continues accessing, it sounds, at full throughput. I initially tried using scp (from the shell) to copy data but I encountered the same local problems. I don't know the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard disk, either. Is there a more effective way of going about recovering the data on the internal disk, assuming that I can't use a recovery CD and am too cheap to bring it in (for now, at least)?

  I have a chart generated with Morris.JS but the labels on the x-axis are to long and being cut off due to the limited height of the area showing the labels. The code below would render a graph that only shows the partial label for "COUNTY PARK ROAD ELEM.". How can I adjust the height of the label area to show the entire text? • FxCop CA2227 warning and ReadOnlyCollection<T>

  In my VS2008 SP1, .NET 3.5 SP1 project, I have different classes that contain different properties. I use C#3.0 auto properties a lot. Some of these properties need to be collections. Since I want to make it simple, I use ReadOnlyCollection<T for these properties. I don't want to use IEnumerable<T since I want random access to the elements. I use Code Analysis (FxCop rules) and I get the CA2227 warning. I don't understand why does ReadOnlyCollection<T should have a set method while it can't be changed... The set method can only do exactly what the property can do. • Can't capture https traffic with Fiddler and Firefox (works with IE)

  I am trying to debug an asp.net app using Firefox. Firefox tries to connect to https://www.paypal.com and I get "Secure Connection Failed" error (Error code: sec_error_bad_signature). I installed Fiddler's cert in Firefox and the local computer and current user Cert stores. I set up the manual proxy in FF to 127.0.0.1 and port 8888 and for all protocols. Fiddler captures http traffic but gives an error with https traffic. Fiddler captures https from IE fine. What's the problem? (Is FiddlerHook FF extension needed and what setting should it be using: auto, disabled or Force traffic to Fiddler?)

When I remove the link line from the HTML doc for site_header.css and instead use an @import url("/css/site_header.css"); in my main.css file, the same results -- nothing gets rendered for for the same div. Now when I take the CSS markup from site_header.css and add it to main.css, the div gets rendered fine... So I am wondering if having multiple css files is somehow not working... or maybe having that css markup at the end of my previous css is somehow conflicting, though I cannot find a reason why it would.

• Compare images after canny edge detection in OpenCV (C++)

  Hi all, I am working on an OpenCV project and I need to compare some images after canny has been applied to both of them. Before the canny was applied I had the gray scale images populating a histogram and then I compared the histograms, but when canny is added to the images the histogram does not populate. I have read that a canny image can populate a histogram, but have not found a way to make it happen. I do not necessairly need to keep using the histograms, I just want to know the best way to compare two canny images. SSCCE below for you to chew on. • Visual Studio 2010, TlbImp generates .net 4.0 interops in 2.0 projects

  In a C# project we add a reference to a COM object via the Add References setup pointing to a COM object which results in the IDE auto-generating the interop assembly. So this is fine and good, but we are building based on .net 3.5 SP1 aka CLR 2.0, and the generated interops are using the 4.0 CLR making them incompatible. Is there a way to prevent this? I assume the other option is configure our build script to try using tlbimp.exe with the /references parameter? to point to mscorlib v2.0? Anyhow, I'm hoping there's a flag somewhere to allow this.

I only made the id primary key (not auto-increment or anything else).   We are running into an error when trying to use the MSDeploy "runCommand" provider to execute a .cmd file on a remote machine. The expected run time should be about 10 seconds, but MSDeploy only runs it for about 2-3 seconds, after which time error details are returned.   I have an MDF and LDF file of SQL Server 2005. i attached it with SQL Server 2008 and did some change in data. now when i attached it back to sql server 2005 Express Edition it gives version error. The database 'E:\DB\JOBPERS.MDF' cannot be opened because it is version 655. This server supports version 612 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported. Could not open new database 'E:\DB\JOBPERS.MDF'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file E:\DB\Jobpers.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

  I have a user control let say UC1 . This user control have viewmodel UC1_vm. In the usercontrol UC1 I have a canvas in which drawing curve logic is implemented. This drawing curve logic is based on the data points property in the view model ( UC1_vm). The data points property inside the view model change with different condition. The generation of data points is written in the View Model. I want to bind the data points property in the view model to the draw curve logic inside the User control (view). I want whenever the data point property is changed in the view model , the canvas calls the draw curve method. Can I set the set any property of canvas which when changed it calls the on paint logic auto matically? Please suggest me the approach of implementing this scenario!!

• jQuery issue - #<an Object> has no method

  I've tried a veriety of jQuery plugins recently and I keep getting this error … … regardless of what plugin I try to use. I've checked the links to the JS files which are all there and working fine. I'm using Drupal if that makes any difference. I've run the plugins away from the main site to demonstrate that they are working and that I am doing things right with 100% success. Any ideas? • UiSplitViewController doesn't autorotate.

  Hello, I have recently run into a problem. My iPad app is somehow preventing the iPad from auto-rotating. My app loads a UISplitView with both of the view controllers returning YES for shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:. I have set up my info.plist to include the "Supported interface orientations" key with all four orientations. When I run the app, however, rotating the device does not rotate the splitView (even though I am receiving UIDeviceOrientationDidChangeNotification). In addition, when I exit my app in a different orientation that it started in the iPad home screen doesn't autorotate to the correct view until I rotate it again without my app running.... Any Ideas would be much appreciated....

  Hi there! We have 2 applications - 1 windows and 1 web (asp.net). Winforms runs on the customer's machine where as the website is hosted within our company. The winforms has a link which opens the web app in a browser window. The web app is secured so the login page is shown. The username and password is the same as the windows app login. How do I auto-login to the web app so the user will not see the login screen? The web app uses FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie to create an encrypted cookie on the user's machine. How do I create the same from the winforms app so the user will not see the login screen? Thanks.

  Hi, Happy New Year! I have a textbox to display a very long Base64 string. The TextBox.Multline = true and TextBox.WordWrap = true. The issue is caused by the auto-word-boundary detection of the TextBox itself. The Base64 string has '+' as one of the 64 characters for Base64 encoding. Therefore, the TextBox will wrap it up at the '+' character, which is not what I want (because the use might think there is a newline character around the '+' character). I just want my Base64 string displayed in Mulitline-mode in TextBox, but no word boundary detection, that is, if the TextBox.Width can only contain 80 characters, then each line should have exact 80 characters except the last line. I'm not sure if I made myself clear. Thanks. Peter
