• quartz throws deadlocks under load

  We are using Quartz with Spring and our configuration is throwing deadlocks when quartz has more than 1 thread configured. I'm starting to believe that it's because we don't have our quartz configured correctly with Spring, but I can't find enough documentation on how to configure the two to play nicely. We are running on both Windows and Linux environments - pointing at MSSQL and Oracle DBs. With both OS, using either DB, we can throw the following deadlock errors... We're consistently throwing these deadlock errors. • Maven Multi-Module builds not honoring failsafe-maven-plugin?

  I recently discovered that Hudson was not the problem. In actuality it was Maven itself as the multi-module build was causing the build failure, not Hudson. I just hadn't noticed where the issue actually existed. Leaving the original question here. I'm using the failsafe-maven-plugin to run some integration tests. The difference between failsafe and surefire is that failsafe allows failures and does not fail the build. On my nightly builds there are occasions that a service the integration tests use might be down. In normal builds, the failsafe plugin would let the build continue since the integration tests are allowed to fail. However, Hudson does not seem to respect this and stops the build and produces rain. I tried to turn the failsafe tests off on nightly builds using -DskipITs. This appears to fail since I'm in a multi module build. Any ideas on how to get Maven to respect that these tests can fail even though they're part of a specific module? • Workflow for academic research projects, one-step builds, and the Joel Test

  Working alone on academic research sometimes breeds bad habits. With no one else reading my code, I would write a lot of throw-away code, and I would lose track of intermediate results which, weeks or months later, I wish I had retained. My recent attempts to make my personal workflow conform to the Joel Test raised interesting questions. Academic research has inherently different goals than industrial software development, and therefore some aspects of the Joel Test become less valid. Nevertheless, I find these steps to be still valuable for academic research: Do you use source control? Can you make a build in one step? Do you have an up-to-date schedule? Do you have a spec? Of particular use is the one-step build. I find myself more organized now that I have implemented the following "one-step build": In other words, I have a single script, build.py, that accepts Python code, data, and TeX as inputs. The outputs are results, figures, and a paper with all the results filled in. (Yes, I know "build" is probably not accurate in this context, but you get the idea.) By consolidating many small steps into one, I am not backtracking as much as I used to. ...but I'm sure there is still room for improvement. Question: For research projects, which steps of the Joel Test do you still value? Do you have a one-step build? If so, what does yours consist of, i.e., what inputs does it accept, and what output does it generate?

• C# Application Calling Powershell Script Issues

  Hi, I have a C# Winforms application which is calling a simple powershell script using the following method: Process process = new Process(); process.StartInfo.FileName = @"powershell.exe"; process.StartInfo.Arguments = String.Format("-noexit \"C:\Develop\{1}\"", scriptName); process.Start(); The powershell script simply reads a registry key and outputs the subkeys. $items = get-childitem -literalPath hklm:\software foreach($item in $items) { Write-Host $item } The problem I have is that when I run the script from the C# application I get one set of results, but when I run the script standalone (from the powershell command line) I get a different set of results entirely.   Hi, I have this LAMP application with about 900k rows in MySQL and I am having some performance issues. Background - Apart from the LAMP stack , there's also a Java process (multi-threaded) that runs in its own JVM. So together with LAMP & java, they form the complete solution. The java process is responsible for inserts/updates and few selects as well. These inserts/updates are usually in bulk/batch, anywhere between 5-150 rows. The PHP front-end code only does SELECT's. Issue - the PHP/SELECT queries become very slow when the java process is running. When the java process is stopped, SELECT's perform alright. I mean the performance difference is huge. When the java process is running, any action performed on the php front-end results in 80% and more CPU usage for mysqld process. Any help would be appreciated. MySQL is running with default parameters & settings. Software stack - Apache - 2.2.x MySQL -5.1.37-1ubuntu5 PHP - 5.2.10 Java - 1.6.0_15 OS - Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)

  I'm having a lot of trouble trying to track down the cause of this error message. I have a large Visual Studio 2010 solution which compiles without error on my local machine but on the build server, msbuild fails on one of the projects with the error: fatal error CS0002: Unable to load message string from resources Here's the red error section at the end: Build FAILED. UPDATE I have just run msbuild /version on both machines and it turns out the .net framework versions are very slightly different. Local machine is 4.0.30319.488 and build server is 4.0.30319.1. I'm about to run windows update on the server to allow it to install some updates, as several seem to be .net framework-related, so I'll see if that makes a difference. UPDATE Installing the updates didn't help. Just remembered I copied up csc.exe from the async preview a little while ago in order to facilitate async compilation (the actual async preview had failed to install on the server due to visual studio not being there, but installing visual studio team viewer seems to have fixed that, so i've just run the proper async ctp3 installer to see if that makes a difference.

• php cli script hangs with no messages

  Hi-- I've written a PHP script that runs via SSH and nohup, meant to process records from a database and do stuff with them (eg. process some images, update some rows). It works fine with small loads, up to maybe 10k records. I have some larger datasets that process around 40k records (not a lot, I realize, but it adds up to a lot of work when each record requires the download and processing of up to 50 images). The larger datasets can take days to process. Sometimes I'll see in my debug logs memory errors, which are clear enough-- but sometimes the script just appears to "die" or go zombie on me. My tail of the debug log just stops, with no error messages, the tail of the nohup log ends with no error, and the process is still showing in a ps list, looking like this-- 26075 pts/0 S 745:01 /usr/bin/php ./import.php but no work is getting done. Can anyone give me some ideas on why a process would just quit? The obvious things (like a php script timeout and memory issues) are not a factor, as far as I can tell. Thanks for any tips PS-- this is hosted on a godaddy VDS (not my choice). I am sort of suspecting that godaddy has some kind of limits that might kick in on me despite what overrides I put in the code (such as set_time_limit(0);).

  The Problem I've got a Cocoa project on the desktop and I'm using Xcode 3.2.1 on Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I want to generate code coverage files for my Unit Test Target in Xcode. What I've Tried As articles like this one suggest, I've adjusted the build settings to: “Generate Test Coverage Files” checked “Instrument Program Flow” checked “-lgcov” added to “Other Linker Flags” I've also set the Run Script section of the test target to have the following: # Run the unit tests in this test bundle. What I Get No .gcda or .gcno files anywhere in the build directory I'm using. I point CoverStory to the Objects-normal directory in my builds folder and it complains that there's nothing there for it to read. I must be doing something really obvious wrong. Anyone any ideas? I have tried the "EngineTests.build" directory being ${FRAMEWORK_NAME} and this gives the same results.

• Overriding MSBuildExtensionsPath in the MSBuild task is flaky

  This is already cross-posted at MS Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/560451 I am attempting to override the property $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) when building a solution containing a C# web application project via msbuild. I am doing this because a web application csproj file imports the file "$(MSBuildExtensionsPath)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v9.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets". This file is installed by Visual Studio to the standard $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) location (C:\Program Files\MSBuild). I would like to eliminate the dependency on this file being installed on the machine (I would like to keep my build servers as "clean" as possible). In order to do this, I would like to include the Microsoft.WebApplication.targets in source control with my project, and then override $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) so that the csproj will import this included version of Microsoft.WebApplication.targets. This approach allows me to remove the dependency without requiring me to manually modify the web application csproj file. This scheme works fine when I build my solution file from the command line, supplying the custom value of $(MSBuildExtensionsPath) at the command line to msbuild via the /p flag. However, if I attempt to build the solution using the MSBuild task in a custom msbuild project file (overriding MSBuildExtensionsPath using the "Properties" attribute), it fails because the web app csproj file is attempting to import the Microsoft.WebApplication.targets from the "standard" Microsoft.WebApplication.targets location (C:\Program Files\MSBuild). Notably, if I run msbuild using the "Exec" task in my custom project file, it works. Even more notably, the FIRST time I run the build using the "MSBuild" task AFTER I have run the build using the "EXEC" task (or directly from the command line), the build works. Has anyone seen behavior like this before? Am I crazy? Is anyone aware of the root cause of this problem, a possible workaround, or whether this is a legitimate bug in MSBuild?

• Is this a good way to expose generic base class methods through an interface?

  I am trying to provide an interface to an abstract generic base class. I want to have a method exposed on the interface that consumes the generic type, but whose implementation is ultimately handled by the classes that inherit from my abstract generic base. However I don't want the subclasses to have to downcast to work with the generic type (as they already know what the type should be). • Getting entitlement warning while building an Ad Hoc Distribution Bundle for an Iphone App.

  I followed Apple's instructions on how to create an Ad Hoc Distrubution bundle but I keep getting what appears to be a fatal Warning during the build process. As per the instructions, I set the signing identity to my distribution profile at the target (instead of the project), created my Entitlement.plist file and unchecked get-task-allow, linked this file to my target and run the build in distribution for device mode. When I do that, the build completes successful but only after giving the following warning. [WARN]CodeSign warning: entitlements are not applicable for product type 'Application' in SDK 'Device - iPhone OS 3.1.2'; ignoring... The last step in the build is the CodeSign and I've noticed that although it ran without errors, it's missing the --entitlement command line option that is given on the official apple instruction guide. Here is my CodeSign line /usr/bin/codesign -f -s "iPhone Distribution: My Name" --resource-rules=/Volumes/Data/projects/xcode/MyAppName/build/Distribution-iphoneos/MyAppName.app/ResourceRules.plist /Volumes/Data/projects/xcode/MyAppName/build/Distribution-iphoneos/MyAppName.app And here is apple's screen shot of what's expected. Can someone please help me figure out if this is something I'm doing wrong because much to my dismay even the dev forum at apple has very little information on this CodeSign warning.

  I have a c# program through which i am opening cmd window as a a process. in this command window i am running a batch file. i am redirecting the output of that batch file commands to a Text File. When i run my application everything seems to be ok. But few times, Application is giving some error like "Can't access the file. it's being used by another application" at the same time cmd window is not getting closed. If we close the cmd process through the Task Manager, then it's writing the content to the file and getting closed. Even though i closed the cmd process, still file handle is not getting released. so that i am not able to run the application next time onwards.Always it's saying Can't access the file. Only after restarting the system, it's working.   Process A is calculating values for objects a1, a2, a3 etc. and is sending results to the middleware queue (RabbitMQ). Consumers read the queue and process these results further. Periodically process A has to send a snapshot of these values, so consumers could do some other calculations. Values for these objects might change independently. The queue might look like this a1, a1, a2, a1, a2, a2, a3... Consumers process each item in the queue. The snapshot has to contain all objects and consumers will process this message for all objects in one go. So the requirement is to have a queue like this: a1, a1, a3, a2, a2, [snapshot, a1, a2, a3], a3, a1 ... The problem is that these items are of different types: one type for objects like a1, a2 and other for a snapshot. This means that they should be processed in a diferent queues, but in that case there is a race condition: consumers might process objects before processing a snapshot. Is there any pattern to solve this (quite common) problem? We are using RabbitMQ for message queueing.

  I have a script that uses Parallel::ForkManager. However, the wait_all_children() process takes incredibly long time even after all child-processes are completed. The way I know is by printing out some timestamps (see below). Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this (I have 16 CPU cores on my machine)? my $pm = Parallel::ForkManager->new(16) for my $i (1..16) { $pm->start($i) and next; ... do something within the child-process ... print (scalar localtime), " Process $i completed.\n"; $pm->finish(); } print (scalar localtime), " Waiting for some child process to finish.\n"; $pm->wait_all_children(); print (scalar localtime), " All processes finished.\n"; Clearly, I'll get the Waiting for some child process to finish message first, with a timestamp of, say, 7:08:35. Unfortunately, you've run into a bug in our generics handling. This is currently fixed in our internal version, but it'll be a little while before we can get the bits out. In the meantime, as a workaround you could do something like this instead: public class WorkaroundDictionary : Dictionary { public WorkaroundDictionary() { } } container.RegisterType(typeof(IDictionary<,),typeof(WorkaroundDictionary<,)); The WorkaroundDictionary only has the default constructor so it'll inject no problem. Since the rest of your app is written in terms of IDictionary, when we get the fixed version done you can just replace the registration with the real Dictionary class, throw out the workaround, and everything will still just work. • TeamCity output artifacts not published to IIS7 folder

  I am trying to set up TeamCity to build and deploy an ASP.NET MVC application. I have the setup running successfully on other servers using TeamCity 4.5, but the new server is running TeamCity 6, and I am having trouble getting it to work as expected. TeamCity manages to get the files from source control, and the project (Visual Studio Solution 2008 set to "Build") builds and outputs the necessary files as expected. The problem seems to be with my artifact paths, as the output files are not copied to the website folder. My solution consists of dozen projects, of which the "Web" project is the interesting one in this case. The build checkout directory is C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\7da320cebf0ee541, and the "Web"-project is found in C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\7da320cebf0ee541\Web I have set up my build configuration with the following artifact paths (relative from checkout directory to the folder containing the website): Web/bin=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/bin Web/Content=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Content Web/Views=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Views Web/Media=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Media Web/*.aspx=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging Web/*.asax=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging (I've tried with more ../ just in case, but it didn't make a difference). • Trouble compiling C/C++ project in NetBeans 6.8 with MinGW on Windows

  I am learning C and because VC++ 2008 doesn't support C99 features I have just installed NetBeans and configure it to work with MinGW. I can compile single file project ( main.c) and use debugger but when I add new file to project I get error "undefined reference to ... function(code) in that file..". • Amazon access key showing in URL for Carrierwave and Fog

  I just switched from storing my images uploaded via Carrierwave locally to using Amazon s3 via the fog gem in my Rails 3.1 app. While images are being added, when I click on an image in my application, the URL is providing my access key and a signature. Here is a sample URL (XXX replaced the string with the info): https://s3.amazonaws.com/bucketname/uploads/photo/image/2/IMG_4842.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=XXX&Signature=XXX%3D&Expires=1332093418 This is happening in development (localhost:3000) and when I am using heroku for production. • Starting and stopping firefox from c#

  When I start /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin on MacOSX using Process.Start() using Mono, the id of the process that gets returned does not match the process that firefox ends up running under. It looks like firefox quickly decides to start another process, and kill the current one. This makes it difficult to stop firefox, and to detect if it is still running. I've tried starting firefox using the -no-remote flag, to no avail. Is there a way to start firefox in such a way that it doesn't do this "I'll quickly make a new process for you" dance? The situation can somewhat be detected by making sure Firefox keeps on running for at least 3 seconds after its start, and when it does not, scan for other firefox processes. However, this technique is shaky at best, as on slow days it might take a bit more than 3 seconds, and then all tests depending on this behaviour fail. It turns out, that this behaviour only happens when asking firefox to start a specific profile using -P MyProfile. (Which I need to do, as I need to start firefox with specific proxyserver settings) If I start firefox "normally" it does stick to its process.
