• jQuery: Checking for length of ul and removing an li element?

  I am trying to remove the last <li> element from a <ul> element only if it exceeds a particular length. For this, I am doing something like this: var selector = "#ulelement" if($(selector).children().length > threshold) { $(selector + " >:last").remove(); } I don't like the fact that I have to use the selector twice. Is there a shorter way to do this? Something like a "remove-if-length-greater-than-threshold" idea. I was thinking that maybe there is a way to do this using the live() function but I have no idea how.

  I'm sitting at work, waiting for traffic to die down. The thought occurred to me. I know when I want to go home, why don't I have an app that watches traffic for me? I also know that there are a lot of smart people on stackoverflow. Where can I get live traffic data for the san francisco bay area region? The data source should be timely, accurate, and as high resolution as possible. I would like to build an app on top of a service, rather than watch google maps or watch another website. I would prefer that I not have to scrape the data, but I have been know to do this in the past when no other option exists.

Of course, if you have use virtual host locally like example.com then the function will be tricked. • Dynamically pulling images from XML for iPhone App

  I've got my iPhone app pulling down live data content via XML nicely, and I've formatted the UITableView cells to display the content without too many headaches. However, at the moment, for each cell I'm just showing a default graphic for now, but I want this to be pulled down from my server too. The code snippet that grabs the image (which is actually in my project) is: cell.imageView.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"TBC.png"]; But that will need to be the dynamic image. In my XML, am I better just returning 'mypic.png' and let the SDK determine the full path, like http://myapp.com/mypic.png or storing the full URL to the image in the XML?

• Using git branches for variations of a project

  I'm using git's branching feature to manage 5 variations of a small website. There are 5 versions that will all be live in different subdirectories on production. My approach to checking out the various branches to their respective folders was to: mkdir foo && cd foo git init git remote add origin git@...:project.git git fetch origin foo:foo Where "foo" is a given branch name. This was fine, except for that it pulled my entire repo (designs, as3 source, etc...) into those branch folders instead of just the public www folder, which is the only thing I really want on production. Is there a cleaner way to handle this? Git can't clone subdirectories right?

• Inserting Large volume of data in SQL Server 2005

  We have a application (written in c#) to store live stock market price in the database (SQL Server 2005). It insert about 1 Million record in a single day. Now we are adding some more segment of market into it and the no of records would be double (2 Millions/day). Currently the average record insertion per second is about 50, maximum is 450 and minimum is 0. To check certain conditions i have used service broker (asynchronous trigger) on my price table. It is running fine at this time(about 35% CPU utilization). Now i am planning to create a in memory dataset of current stock price. we would like to do some simple calculations. I want to know different views of members on this. Please provide your way of dealing with such situation.

• ASP.NET MVC on IIS6

  Where can I find some good pointers on best practices for running ASP.NET MVC on IIS6? I haven't seen any realistic options for web-hosts who provide IIS7-hosting yet. Mostly because I don't live in the U.S. So I was wondering on how you best build applications in ASP.NET MVC and make it easily available to deploy on both IIS6 and IIS7. Keep in mind that this is for standard web-hosts, so there is no access to ISAPI-filters or special settings inside IIS6. Are there anything else one should think about when developing ASP.NET MVC-applications to target IIS6? Any functions that doesn't work? UPDATE: One of the bigger issues is the thing with routes. The pattern {controller}/{action} will work on IIS7, but not IIS6 which needs {controller}.mvc/{action}. So how do I make this transparent? Again, no ISAPI and no IIS-settings, please.

• Wrong assembly-references for Silverlight Sketchflow project in Blend 3

  Hello, In my installation of Blend 3, the SketchStyles are missing when a new project is created. I found out that this is because the following automatic references in the project are wrong: Microsoft.Expression.Interactions Microsoft.Expression.Prototyping.Interactivity Microsoft.Expression.Prototyping.RunTime Microsoft.Expression.Prototyping.SketchControls In the project references these all point to my project path (where they don't live). If I remove them manually, and instead set the references to ie this: "c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Expression\Blend 3\Interactivity\Libraries\Silverlight\Microsoft.Expression.Interactions.dll" everything works. Any ideas on why, and how to fix this? Could it be the project template somehow? TIA

  Hello Hoping that using something like this demo it is possible to drag items within and between two columns, and update their order either live or with a "save" button to MySQL. Point being that you can make changes and return to the page later to view or update your ordering. http://pilotmade.com/draggable2.html Doing it for just one column is fine, but when I try to pass the order of both columns, the issue seems to be passing multiple serialized arrays with jQuery to a PHP/MySQL update script.   I'd like to offer a news-feed like feature for users of our website. When the user logs in, he is shown a list of the latest updates across various areas of the site. I'm afraid that this is going to be difficult to scale. What are some networking / database topologies that can support a scalable infrastructure without having lots of copies of the same data? • CSS Centering Issue - Div Centering appx 15px too far to the right

  I have a theme that I'm modifying for my site. I currently have it live on my test domain while I tinker with it before launch. http://www.networkgenius.org The #content-wrap div is centering, but too far to the right for some reason. I've absolutely no idea why it's doing this, especially since everything else is centering properly. What is the problem? I did add a 15px padding to the content-wrap area as I've changed the body's background color to the grey that you see and obviously didn't want the text pressed right up against the edges of the wrapper.   My rails app is about to go live and I'm trying to figure out how to create a widget based on data on the site. My Javascript is not too hot--limited to the O'reilly head first book on JS. I can read simple Javascript okay but when it comes to writing it I'm a little lost. That said, I hope to roll out a widget, maybe a wordpress plugin too soon after my app is launched. Does anyone know of any rails plugins, javascript templates, tutorials or books that can get me going? I did ask a similar question before here: But my limited knowledge of JS kept me from implementing the suggested answer properly.

• Adding a dynamic-height UITableView into a scrolling view?

  Hello all – I'm getting into iPhone development and have hit my first confusing UI point. Here's the situation: My app is tab-based, and the view that I'm confused about has a static featured content image at the top, then a dynamic list below into which X headlines are loaded. My goal is to have the height of the headline table grow as elements are added to it, and then to have the whole view scroll (both featured image on top and headline list below). So, I guess my question comes in two parts: 1) First, how do you set up a dynamic-height table view that will grow as cells are added to it. So far I've only been able to have my tables handle their own scrolling. 2) Then, what is the root NIB view that the featured image and the table should live in to enabled scrolling? I've dropped oversized content into a UIScrollView now, although did seem to have any success with having it automatically scroll. Thanks in advance for any help on this subject!

• Passing a non-iterable to list.extend ()

  Hello, I am creating a public method to allow callers to write values to a device, call it write_vals() for example. Since these values will by typed live, I would like to simplify the user's life by allowing them type in either a list or a single value, depending on how many values they need to write. For example: write_to_device([1,2,3]) or write_to_device(1) My function would like to work with a flat list, so I tried to be clever and code something like this: input_list = [] input_list.extend( input_val ) This works swimmingly when the user inputs a list, but fails miserably when the user inputs a single integer: TypeError: 'int' object is not iterable Using list.append() would create a nested list when a list was passed in, which would be an additional hassle to flatten. Checking the type of the object passed in seems clumsy and non-pythonic and wishing that list.extend() would accept non-iterables has gotten me nowhere. So has trying a variety of other coding methods. Suggestions (coding-related only, please) would be greatly appreciated.

  Hello, I am planning to implement a basic recommendation system that uses Facebook Connect or similar social networking site API's to connect a users profile, based on tags do an analyze and by using the results, generate item recommendations on my e-commerce site(works similar to Amazon). I do believe I need to divide parts into such: Fetching social networking data via API's.(Indeed user allows this) Analyze these data and generate tokes. By using information tokens, do item recommendations on my e-commerce site. Ie: I am a fan of "The Strokes" band on my Facebook account, system analyze this and recommending me "The Strokes Live" CD. For any part(fetching data, doing recommendation based on tags...), what algorithm and method would you recommend/ is used ? Thanks

• jQuery - Trigger click event on links with spacebar?

  It looks like in most browsers, an <input type="submit"> treats both [spacebar] and [enter] as a click, but an <a> link only treats [enter] as a click. My app uses a number of links formatted to simulate buttons, so a user that is accustomed to tabbing to a button and pressing [spacebar] will be frustrated. This bit of jQuery solves the problem: $("a.Button").die("keypress").live("keypress", function(e) { if (e.which == 32) { $(this).trigger("click"); e.preventDefault(); } }); My question: Is this a reason not to do this? I'm a little reluctant to override the browser's default behavior on something as basic as this, but since I'm already abusing the link tag to make it look like a button, at least this way I'm not violating the user's expectations any further.

  I'd like all my content to flow around an image. To do this, I simply did img#me { width: 300px; float: left; margin-right: 30px; } This works for text wraping, but other elements go behind it.   What are useful and free resources to make Wordpress 2.9 themes? Is Dreamweaver helpful to make themes ? What are time saving tips? I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows. and my main browser is FF 3.6. I know some extensions of dreamweaver but those are not updated with wordpress versions. • Would a Socket Connection Outperform an Intarvaled Database Sweep and Requests?

  I'm building a small chat application to add to an existing framework. There will only be 20-50 users MAX at any one time. I was wondering if I could get away with updating a cache file containing (semi) live chat data for whichever users happen to be chatting just by performing timed queries and regular AJAX refreshes for new data as opposed to learning how to open and maintain a socket connection. I'm sure there are existing chat plug-ins out there. But I just had a hell of a time installing one and I could see building the whole damn thing taking just as much time as plugging one in. Am I off to a bad start? Thanks in advance -J (p.s. this is a semi closed network behind a php login so security isn't a great concern)

• PHP app with cookie less session does not work

  I am trying to use PHP session without using cookies. I have enabled session.use_trans_sid and disabled session.use_cookies in my php.ini file. I have also disabled cookies in my firefox browser. Now, when I browse my home page, I do not see the HTTP set cookie header in the server response to my page request (using Live HTTP headers). My understanding is that PHP will append session IDs to my request URL when cookies are disabled. Am I doing something wrong? BTW, I am aware using session IDs is not a recommended approach.

• AJAX with Web services and ASP.NET SessionState

  We have an application which uses ScriptManager to generate a client-side proxy which makes AJAX calls to web services. The web services being invoked live in a separate appDomain(separate cluster altogether). The problem is that our application uses a State server for storing session. I want the web services to be able to access session also. First off, does anyone see anything wrong with the client making web service calls to a separate cluster(we're hoping this would be a better approach for scalability)? I was thinking that possibly anytime there is an update to the session dictionary in one appDomain, automatically update the session in the other appDomain also(referring to the web service appDomain, don't know how to do this, only theoretical). What do others think? Thanks!
