  • WebApps tendency

    There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming.   • Would OpenID or OAuth work for authorization/authentication on a distributed web service?

    We're in the early stages of designing a RESTful/resource-oriented web service API for a computational lingustics application. Because many of the resources we plan to serve are rights-encumbered, a key design decision has been to specify the platform so that each resource provider can expose their own web service that complies with the API spec. This way, the rights owner maintains control over their content (and thus the ability to throttle or deny access at will) and a direct relationship with the consumer, while still being able to participate in in the collaborative network. At the same time, to simplify the job of writing a client for this service, we want to allow a client access to the distributed service through one end-point, with the server handling content negotiation and retrieval from the appropriate providers. Right now, we're at an impasse on authentication/authorization schemes. One of our number has argued for the (technical) simplicity of a central authentication registry, but others are concerned about the organizational complexity of such a scheme. It seems to me, based on an albeit limited understanding of the technologies, that a combination of OpenID and OAuth would do the trick, with a client authenticating with the end-point via OpenID, and the server taking action on the user's behalf with the various content providers using OAuth. I've only ever seen implementations (e.g. stackoverflow, twitter, etc.) where a human was present to intervene, and I still need to do more research on these technologies. Would a scheme like this work for an automated web service, or would it make the client too difficult to implement and operate?

  • Using complex data types from Java in Axis webservice

    I am currently developing a Java app which handles a SOAP webservice. The problem lies after I parse the WSDL [the Parser object from Apache Axis does it for me], and I create the call. When I try to invoke it, I have to pass a Object[] to assign the parameters [taken from the Action of the WSDL]. A normal action is easy, but when I have custom datatypes, I can't get it to fill it out for me. I try to pass Object[]{ new Object { }}, but it assigns the first field instead. I can't pass it already processed, because it changes the '< ' to '--lt --gt', and the server doesn't recognize it'.   • Referencing code in VB.NET

    I'm not at all familiar with VB.NET or ASP. I need to create a simple page which makes a call to a remote web service. I used the wsdl utility which comes with the DotNet SDK to generate a service proxy and write it to a VB file. Unfortunately I have no idea how to reference this code in either my ASPX file or the code behind VB file so I can create an instance of the proxy. Edit: I should have qualified this by noting that I'm not using visual studio. I just coded up a .aspx with a .vb behind it and dropped it into an IIS location. Is there a way to do what you're suggesting outside of VS?

    Greetings all, I am trying to create a layout in Android for a notification. My goal is to have the following displayed: 1: Icon for the app 2: Vertically stacked LinearLayout with Session title and Room to be held in 3: The start time of the session The problem I am facing is that #2 has a variable width depending on the size of the title. Hardcoding a width would look terrible if the user turns the handset sideways and goes into Landscape mode. Therefore here is my question: How can I layout three components horizontally in Android such that #1 and #3 are left and right aligned respectively, and #2 simply takes the space remaining?   • API Wrapper Architecture Best Practice

    Hi, So I'm writing a Perl wrapper module around a REST webservice and I'm hoping to have some advice on how best to architect the module. I've been looking at a couple of different Perl modules for inspiration. Flickr::Simple2 - so this is basically one big file with methods wrapping around the different methods in the Flickr API, e.g. getPhotos() etc. Flickr::API - this is a sub-class of another module (LWP) for making HTTP requests. So basically it just allows you to make calls through the module, using LWP, that go to the correct API method/URL without defining any wrapper methods itself. (That's explained pretty poorly - but basically it has a method that takes an argument (a API method name) and constructs the correct API call). e.g request() / response(). An alternative design would be like the first described, but less monolithic, with separate classes for separate "areas" of the API. I'd like to follow modern/best practice Perl methods so I'm using Dist::Zilla to build the module and Moose for the OO stuff but I'd appreciate some input on how to actually design/architect my wrapper. Guides/tutorials or pointers to other well designed modules would be appreciated. Cheers

The Data class , contains fileds with many types : int , string , double , Person object and array of Person object. I created the J2ME client code through the wizard and every thing seems ok . I see in the Netbeans project the service and the stub . When I try to call my web service method , say Data GetData() ; Then I have a problem with parsing the returned data from the web service and the client data object .     We have deployed a java webapplication in Elastic Beanstalk with the minimum instance count 1 and max instance count 2 for Autoscaling. The custom AMI we are using is c1.medium with Sun JDK 6. The environment status changed to yellow and then red. After checking into the log file from the snapshot logs we found a exception - Caused by: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. Assuming this could be one of the possible reason for the Environment failure. The settings that we have configured in the Environment Container option are Initial JVM Heap Size (MB) - 256M Maximum JVM Heap Size (MB) - 512m The maximum heap size the java virtual machine will ever consume, specified on the JVM launch command line using -Xmx. Maximum JVM Permanent Generation Size (MB) - 512m Should i increase the Heap size from 512m to more or is it fine.

  • JAX-WS and JPA, how to load stub objects using JPA?

    I'm trying to develope a soap web service that has to access a mysql db. I have to replicate an existing service, so I created all the stub object from it's wsdl file Netbeans created all the necessary stuff for me (new, web service from wsdl), it works ok... Now I'm trying to use JPA to load all those objects from the database. So far I was going fine, I created the classes using (new, entity class from database), and then copied all the annotations to the classes generated by wsimport, and it was working fine. The problem is that netbeans insists on running wsimport again, and then I loose all my annotations... Is there some way to tell netbeans not to regenerate those files? I think this situation shoulb be pretty common, I mean developing a web service from a wsdl and then having to fill those objects with data using JPA. what would be the correct aproach to this kind of situation? thanks a lot saludos sas I've also tried inheriting from the stubs, and addign there the persistence annotations, but I had troubles with overlaping members, I'm redeclaring protected properties...

This works fine but when I try to invoke it from a web application it throws an exception saying 'Class not found' for the class 'ws/impl/AwardWebServiceSoapBindingStub'. This works fine when there is no security on the .NET web service. However, we would like to use sys.utl_http or sys.utl_dbws to call a .NET web service with Kerberos or NTLM authentication. We're currently struggling with this. Any hints on how to solve it?

  • How can I disable keep-alive on ASP.NET Web Service client requests?

    I have a few web servers behind an Amazon EC2 load balancer. I'm using TCP balancing on port 80 (rather than HTTP balancing). I have a client polling a Web Service (running on all web servers) for new items every few seconds. However, the client seems to stay connected to one server and polls that same server each time. I've tried using ServicePointManager to disable KeepAlive, but that didn't change anything. The outgoing connection still had its "connection: keep-alive" HTTP header, and the server kept the TCP connection open. I've also tried adding an override of GetWebRequest to the proxy class created by VS, which inherits from SoapHttpClientProtocol, but I still see the keep-alive header. If I kill the client's process and restart, it'll connect to a new server via the load balancer, but it'll continue polling that new server forever. Is there a way to force it to connect to a random server each time? I want the load from the one client to be spread across all of the web servers. The client is written in C# (as is the server) and uses a Web Reference (not a Service Reference), which points to the load balancer.
