  Hi!I'm speaking at MySQL Connect next Saturday, Sep. 29. My Session is a hands-on lab (HOL) on MySQL Cluster.If you are interested in familiarize a bit with MySQL Cluster this is definitely a session for you. I will start by briefly introducing MySQL Cluster and its architecture. Then I will guide you through the needed steps to install a local MySQL Cluster, connect to it (using the command line), monitor its logs, and safe shutdown it.We will hence have a chance to see which are the most common commands using in MySQL Cluster administration (e.g. Cluster backup) as well as the most common operations (e.g. online datanode add). Cluster's users and customers have the flexibility to choose whether they prefer to use a SQL or NoSQL approach to connect to MySQL Cluster, so, during the last part of the HOL, we will see how to connect to MySQL Cluster using the NoSQL NDB API. If there is enough time at the end, we will also compile and execute some simple Java programs that make use of Connector J to connect to the SQL Nodes of our Cluster. • Guidance for Web XML Api's

  I have to create an API for our application that is accessible over HTTP. I envision the API's responses to be simple XML documents. It won't be a REST API (not in the strict sense of REST). I am fairly new to this space - of course I've had to consume some Web API's in my work, but often they are already wrapped in language native libraries (i.e., TweetSharp). I'm looking for information to guide the design of an API. Are there any articles, blog posts, etc. that review and expound upon the design choices to be made in a Web API? Design choices would be things like how to authenticate, URL structure, when users submit should the URL they POST to determine the action being performed or should all requests go to a common URL and some part of the POST'd data is responsible for routing to a command, should all responses have the same document root or should errors have a different root, etc., etc. Ideally, such articles or blog posts would enumerate through the common variations for any given point of design and expound on the advantages and disadvantages, such that they would inform me to make my own decision (as opposed to articles that simply explain one single way to do something). Does anyone have any links or wisdom they can share?

  Do you want an easy way to find images related to news stories or articles when browsing in Internet Explorer? Then you will definitely want to have a look at the Bing Image Search accelerator. Bing Image Search in Action Two simple steps will have the new accelerator installed: click Add to Internet Explorer to start the process and confirm the installation when the secondary window appears. For the first of our two examples we chose the “Deepwater Horizon rig”. To find images highlight the word/name that you are interested in, and select Bing Image Search in the context menu. Hovering your mouse over the context menu listing will present a “top” image in a popup window… Or if you prefer to view multiple images click on the context menu listing. A Bing image search for the highlighted word/name will be opened in a new tab. Our second example was the Guatemalan volcano “Pacaya”. As before we first viewed the popup window image… Followed by a full image search in a new tab. The accelerator makes it quick and easy to find additional images when needed. Conclusion The Bing Image Search accelerator makes it a simple task to find additional images related to what you are reading or looking at while browsing. • Pub banter - content strategy at the ballot box?

  Last night, I was challenged to explain (and defend) content strategy. Three sheets to the wind after a pub quiz, this is no simple task, but I hope I acquitted myself passably. I say "hope" because there was a really interesting question I couldn't answer to my own satisfaction. I wonder if any of you folks out there in the ethereal internet hive-mind can help me out? A friend - a rather concrete thinker who mathematically models complex biological systems for a living - pointed out that my examples were largely routed in business-to-business web sales and support. He challenged me with: Say you've got a political website, so your goal is to have somebody read it and vote for you - how do you measure the effectiveness of that content? Well, you would. umm. Oh dear. I guess what we're talking about here, to yank it back to my present comfort zone, is a sales process where your point of conversion is off the site. The political example is perhaps a little below the belt, since what you can and can't do, and what data you can and can't collect is so restricted. You can't throw up a "How did you hear about this election?" questionnaire in the polling booth. Exit polls don't pull in your browsing history and site session information. Not everyone fatuously tweets and geo-tags each moment of their lives. Oh, and folks lie. The business example might be easier to attack. You could have, say, a site for a farm shop that only did over the counter sales. Either way, it's tricky. I fell back on some of the work I've done usability testing and benchmarking documentation, and suggested similar, quick and dirty, small sample qualitative UX trials. I'm not wholly sure that was right. Any thoughts? How might we measure and curate for this kind of discontinuous conversion?

  I just posted on the bits you need to install to explore all the features of Entity Framework 4 with the Visual Studio 2010 RC. I’ve also had a quick look (March 12th 2010) to see what new resources are out there on EF4. They appear a little thin on the ground – but there are some gems. The following all caught my attention: Julie Lerman has published 2 How-to-videos on EF4 on pluralsight.com. You need to create a free guest pass to watch them. Getting Started with Entity Framework 4.0 – Session given at Cairo CodeCamp 2010 . This includes ppt and demos. Entity Framework 4 providers – read through the comments What’s new with Entity Framework in Visual Studio 2010 RC Extending the design surface of EF4 using the Extension Starter Kit Persistence Ignorance and EF4 on geekSpeak on channel 9 (poor audio IMHO – I gave up) First of a series of posts on EF4 How to stop your dba having a heart attack with EF4 from Simon Sabin in the UK. This includes ppt and demos. And the biggy. You no longer have to depend on SQL Profiler to keep an eye on the generated SQL. There is now a commercial profiler for Entity Framework.  I am yet to try it – but I listened to a .NET rocks podcast which made it sound great. It is “hidden” in a session on DSLs in Boo –> Oren Eini on creating DSLs in Boo. This is a much richer experience than you would get from SQL Profiler – matching the SQL to the .NET code. And finally a momentous #fail to … drum roll… the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 Training Kit Feb release. This just contains one ppt on EF4 – and it is not even a good one. Real shame. P.S. • New Packt Books: APEX & JRockit

    I have received these 2 ebooks from Packt Publkishing and I am currently reviewing them. Both of them look great so far.   Oracle Application Express 3.2 - The Essentials and More First of all, I have to mention that I am new to APEX. I was interested on this product which is a development tool for Web applications on the Oracle Database. As I support JDeveloper and ADF, which are products that work very closely with the Oracle Database and are a rapid development tool as well, it is always interesting and useful to know complementary tools. APEX looks very useful and the book includes many working examples. A more complete review of this book is coming soon. Further information about this book can be seen at Packt.   Oracle JRockit: The Definitive Guide Many of our Oracle Coherence customers run their caches and clusters using JRockit. This JVM has helped us to solve lots of Service Requests. It is a really reliable, fast and stable JVM. It works great on both development and production environments with big amounts of data, concurrency, multi-threading and many other factors that can make a JVM crash. I must also mention JRockit Mission Control (JRMC), which is a great tool for management and monitoring. I really recommend it. As a matter of fact, some months ago, I created a document entitled "How to Monitor Coherence-Based Applications using JRockit Mission Control" (Doc Id 961617.1) on My Oracle Support. Also, the JRockit Runtime Analyzer (JRA) and it successor of newer versions, the JRockit Flight Recorder (JFR) are deeply reviewed. This book contains very clear and complete information about all this and more. • How to advocate Stack Overflow at work

  I am thinking of doing a short presentation at work about using Stack Overflow as a resource for your day job. What is the experience doing this? Would you deem it a valid resource to tell you colleagues about or is it similar to telling them about Google as a resource? Is there a better way of doing it? I was leaning toward asking questions side of Stack Overflow rather than answering them to avoid you-shouldn't-be-doing-this-on-work-time argument. Just as a follow up. Originally I didn't want to make the question to specific to my own case. My presentation will only be a quick four minute talk, which I will repeat over an hour to different groups. I may ask a question before the talk on Stack Overflow and refer to it during the presentation. Hopefully I will get some activity during the hour. I am also going to talk briefly about some of the other Stack Exchange sites that would fit the audience as they are not all developers. • Google Rolls Out a New and Compact Navigation Bar

  Earlier this spring Google introduced the black navigation bar; now they’ve updated the bar to take up less space and be more useful. Although the black bar is useful in-so-far as it gives you quick access to Google services (useful, of course, only if you use those services) the new navigation bar–seen in the video above–includes an improved layout. Rather than use the bar space to spread out links which the user may or may not use the service links are now tucked into a mouse-over menu accessed by hovering on the Google logo. The majority of the space previously just taken up by links and the black bar itself is now a a search box.   It's time once again for our Friday tip. Our question today is about how to determine how much video RAM to allocate for your virtual machines in a VDI deployment: Question: How much video RAM do I really need on my VirtualBox VMs? Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: The answer is in the VirtualBox admin guide but it's seldom followed correctly, usually resulting in excess unused RAM to be allocated. The formula for determining how much RAM to allocate is shown below for a 32 bit fullscreen 22" monitor supporting 1680x1050: bit depth / 8 x horizontal res x vertical res / 1024 / 1024 = MB RAM Which translates to: 32 bits / 8 x 1680 x 1050 / 1024 / 1024 = 6.7 MB If you wanted to support dual 22" monitors, you would need twice that, so 13.4 MB. Anything in excess of what is needed is readily allocated but not used and would be better suited for running more VMs! • White box testing with Google Test

  I've been trying out using GoogleTest for my C++ hobby project, and I need to test the internals of a component (hence white box testing). At my previous work we just made the test classes friends of the class being tested. But with Google Test that doesn't work as each test is given its own unique class, derived from the fixture class if specified, and friend-ness doesn't transfer to derived classes. Initially I created a test proxy class that is friends with the tested class. It contains a pointer to an instance of the tested class and provides methods for the required, but hidden, members. This worked for a simple class, but now I'm up to testing a tree class with an internal private node class, of which I need to access and mess with. I'm just wondering if anyone using the GoogleTest library has done any white box testing and if they have any hints or helpful constructs that would make this easier. Ok, I've found the FRIEND_TEST macro defined in the documentation, as well as some hints on how to test private code in the advanced guide. But apart from having a huge amount of friend declerations (i.e. one FRIEND_TEST for each test), is there an easier idion to use, or should I abandon using GoogleTest and move to a different test framework?

  I googled and looked into all unkown issues on ubuntu forums but I can't figure out why a 10.04 LTS server won't detect the last LTS 12.04.1. I guess since 12.04 is a fresh dist, not much is reported for related issues Here is what I did : apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get install update-manager-core it was already installed so no update for this package. I checked : /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades [DEFAULT] # Default prompting behavior, valid options: # # never - Never check for a new release. # normal - Check to see if a new release is available. If more than one new # release is found, the release upgrader will attempt to upgrade to # the release that immediately succeeds the currently-running # release. # lts - Check to see if a new LTS release is available. • Final Release of Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 Released

  If you haven’t already heard the news, the final release of the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 have been released! That’s great news for Silverlight developers and to top it off the crew up at Microsoft even snuck in a few new features including intellisense for styles (a big deal in my opinion) and the ability to easily manipulate Grid rows and columns.  One of the most time consuming (and boring) tasks experienced by developers is also covered with the new “Go To Value Definition” feature that allows you to jump directly to style definitions with ease.  That feature alone is worth the upgrade especially if you’re working with a large application that uses a lot of styles. Here’s a quick run-down of the features provided by the latest release from the Microsoft team: Support for targeting Silverlight 4 in the Silverlight designer and project system RIA Services application templates and libraries to simplify access to your data services (check out this Silverlight.tv video and whitepaper giving full details) Support for Silverlight 4 elevated trust and out-of-browser applications Enhanced support for other new Silverlight 4 features, including: Working with Implicit Styles Go To Value Definition - navigate directly from controls on your page to styles that are applied to them.
