  • Web2.0, AJAX, HTML5, Facebook, Social web, openid, Oauth, web browsers... where is all this going ?

    - by jokoon
    We have seen many new things appear in the last 7 or 5 five years on the web: Facebook, html5 appeared, new browsers grew strongly, Google failed with Wave... Since Facebook and other stuff like Gtalk and Gmail, I thought and hoped that forums, chat, mail, usenet, conversation rooms and p2p protocols could inter operate to allow the user to use all those services transparently. Of course I realized that things are far much complicated, for several reasons: the IETF cannot invent new things: they just propose standards. Microsoft as well as big players often are obstacles to relevant innovation regarding open formats. The biggest stories being document formats or internet explorer with its long reaction to support web standards. Smartphones, thanks to the appearances of OSes such as iOS and Android, are finally able to navigate on internet: former devices were deaf, they weren't directly connected to internet. The mail protocol were left unchanged even with the grow of spam and malwares. I don't know what to think, because I think there is still a lot to do, but I feel like it will never happen or that nobody seems interested in those basic text transmit features... So what do you think what are the next big steps in the evolution of the web ? Do you think is will still walk hand in hand with open source ?

  • How does Github calculate language percentage in a repo?

    - by John Isaacks
    I have a repo with Ruby and PHP code in it. Github says my repo is 74.8% PHP and 25.2% Ruby I do not understand how this can be. When I compare the 2 languages in my project: # Count how many files: # Ruby ls | grep ".*\.rb" | wc -l # returns 10 #PHP ls | grep ".*\.php" | wc -l # returns 1 # Count how many lines, words, chars: # Ruby cat *.rb | wc # returns 229, 812, 5303 # PHP cat *.php | wc # returns 102, 473, 2760 Ruby always seems to have more. Am I missing something?

  • Custom Rails 3 Date Format

    - by Jack
    Hi, I am trying to format a date as follows using Rails 3; 3rd June 2003. This is not a standard way of showing the date, so I have looked into a custom way of doing it. Rails 3.0 documentation here suggests that I add a file at config/initializers/time_formats.rb containing the following code: Time::DATE_FORMATS[:custom_date] = lambda { |time| time.strftime("#{time.day.ordinalize} %B %Y") } And then call it using something like: <%= document.publish_date.to_formatted_s(:custom_date) %> However this isn't working and the date is being formatted as YYYY-MM-YY. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers

  • How to make facebox popup remain open and the content inside the facebox changes after the submit

    - by Leonardo Dario Perna
    Hi, I'm a jQuery total n00b. In my rails app this what happen: I'm on the homepage, I click this link: <a href='/betas/new' rel='facebox'>Sign up</a> A beautiful facebox popup shows up and render this views and the containing form: # /app/views/invites/new <% form_tag({ :controller => 'registration_code', :action => 'create' }, :id => 'codeForm') do %> <%= text_field_tag :code %> <br /> <%= submit_tag 'Confirm' %> <% end %> I clink on submit and if the code is valid the user is taken on another page in another controller: def create # some stuff redirect_to :controller => 'users', :action => 'type' end Now I would like to render that page INSIDE the SAME popup contains the form, after the submit button is pressed but I have NO IDEA how to do it. I've tried FaceboxRender but this happens: Original version: # /controllers/users_controller def type end If I change it like that nothing happens: # /controllers/users_controller def type respond_to do |format| format.html format.js { render_to_facebox } end end If I change it like that (I know is wrong but I'm a n00b so it's ok :-): # /controllers/users_controller def type respond_to do |format| format.html { render_to_facebox } format.js end end I got this rendered: try { jQuery.facebox("my raw HTML from users/type.html.erb substituted here")'); throw e } Any solutions? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  • Facebook Connect icon isn't showing up in Internet Explorer

    - by John Duff
    I'm working on a site that is using Facebook Connect and recently made some changes so that the main pages are cached and if you are not logged in (checked with an ajax call) it loads the Facebook Connect javascript and renders the connect button into the page. This works perfectly everywhere except Internet Explorer 7 and 8. The weird part is I render the buttons into a hidden Sign Up / Sign In form and when you show either of those the Connect buttons appear. You can take a look here and you will see the button in Firefox and not Internet Explorer. If you click Sign In the button will show up. This is a Rails app so on the server-side we're responding to an ajax call with rjs like this: page['signin-status'].replace(:partial => "common/layout/signin_menu") page.select('.facebook-connect').each do |value, index| value.replace(render(:partial => '/facebook/signin')) end page << <<-eos LazyLoader.load('http://static.ak.connect.facebook.com/js/api_lib/v0.4/FeatureLoader.js.php', function(){ FB.init('#{Facebooker.api_key}','/xd_receiver.html'); }); eos The first line is replacing the header, the second is the Connect buttons in the Modal dialogs. The partial being rendered into the header looks like this: <span id='signin-status'> <%= fb_login_button(remote_function(:url => "/facebook/connect"))%> | <%= link_to_function "Sign In", "showSignInForm();", :id => "signin" %> | <%= link_to_function "Sign Up", "showSignUpForm();", :id => "signup" %> </span> The Partial being rendered into the Modal dialogs looks like this: <div class='facebook-connect'> <div id="FB_HiddenContainer" style="position:absolute; top:-10000px; width:0px; height:0px;" ></div> <label>Or sign in with your Facebook account</label> <%= fb_login_button(remote_function(:url => "/facebook/connect"))%> </div> I find it very strange that showing the Modal dialog causes all the icons to show. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about what's going on?

  • Rails: savage_beast forum plugin and tinymce - new post works but edit doesn't use tinymce properly

    - by Max Williams
    Hi all. I'm using the savage_beast forum plugin and tinymce (via the tinymce_hammer plugin) in my rails app. When posting a new post, tinymce works fine. However, when i go to edit a post i get the tinymce editor, but the content in the edit box has all been converted into html. Can anyone tell me how i get it so that what appears in the tinymce edit box is the original text i posted, rather than the converted-to-html version? Does it need to get converted back from html into a format tinymce will use? Savage_beast saves the original given text in a body field, and the converted-to-html text in a body_html field. After tinymce does its work in the first instance (ie when posting a new post) the body field gets text that's already been converted to html. So i guess i need to convert it back to whatever tinymce expects? I'd expect tinymce to be happy with getting html, and to just handle it, though. grateful for any advice - max

  • Uploading images from Flex to Rails using Paperclip

    - by 23tux
    Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to upload images that were created in my flex app to rails. I've tried to use paperclip, but it don't seem to work. I've got this tutorial here: http://blog.alexonrails.net/?p=218 The problem is, that they are using a FileReference to browse for files on the clients computer. They call the .upload(...) function and send the data to the upload controller. But I'm using a URLLoader to upload a image, that is modified in my Flex-App. First, here is the code from the tutorial: private function selectHandler(event:Event):void { var vars:URLVariables = new URLVariables(); var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(uri); request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; vars.description = "My Description"; request.data = vars; var uploadDataFieldName:String = 'filemanager[file]'; fileReference.upload(request, uploadDataFieldName); } I don't know how to set that var uploadDataFieldName:String = 'filemanager[file]'; in a URLLoader. I've got the image data compressed as a JPEG in a ByteArray. It looks like this: public function savePicture():void { var filename:String = "blubblub.jpg"; var vars:URLVariables = new URLVariables(); vars.position = layoutView.currentPicPosition; vars.url = filename; vars.user_id = 1; vars.comic_id = 1; vars.file_content_type = "image/jpeg"; vars.file_file_name = filename; var rawBytes:ByteArray = new JPGEncoder(75).encode(bitmapdata); vars.picture = rawBytes; var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(Data.SERVER_ADDR + "pictures/upload"); request.method = URLRequestMethod.POST; request.data = vars; var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader(request); loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, savePictureHandler); loader.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, errorHandlerUpload); loader.load(request); } If I set the var.picture URLVariable to the bytearray, then I get the error, that the upload is nil. Here is the Rails part: Picture-Model: require 'paperclip' class Picture < ActiveRecord::Base # relations from picture belongs_to :comic belongs_to :user has_many :picture_bubbles has_many :bubbles, :through => :picture_bubbles # attached file for picture upload -> with paperclip plugin has_attached_file :file, :path => "public/system/pictures/:basename.:extension" end and the picture controller with the upload function: class PicturesController < ApplicationController protect_from_forgery :except => :upload def upload @picture = Picture.new(params[:picture]) @picture.position = params[:position] @picture.comic_id = params[:comic_id] @picture.url = params[:url] @picture.user_id = params[:user_id] if @picture.save render(:nothing => true, :status => 200) else render(:nothing => true, :status => 500) end end end Does anyone know how to solve this problem? thx, tux

  • OAuth::Problem (parameter_absent)

    - by Sid
    Im working with OAuth 0.3.6 and the linkedin gem for a Rails application and I have this issue where OAuth throws an error saying that OAuth::Problem (parameter_absent). The thing is it doesn't throw the error on every occasion its called and the problem is I am unable to reproduce the issue locally to test it. The documentation says that : [parameter_absent: a required parameter wasn't received. In this case, the response SHOULD also contain an oauth_parameters_absent parameter. ] but the request is generated the same way each time to obtain the tokens so I fail to understand why this happens. Log OAuth::Problem (parameter_absent): oauth (0.3.6) lib/oauth/consumer.rb:167:in `request' oauth (0.3.6) lib/oauth/consumer.rb:183:in `token_request' oauth (0.3.6) lib/oauth/tokens/request_token.rb:18:in `get_access_token' linkedin (0.1.7) lib/linked_in/client.rb:35:in `authorize_from_request' app/controllers/users_controller.rb:413:in `linkedin_save' I have seen a few people facing this issue but I am yet to figure out a way to resolve this. Would appreciate some help on this.

  • OAuth in Rails - google, twitter, facebook, connect for login like stackoverflow login

    - by Sam
    Rails has the rest autho plugin which works well but is there a solution for incorporating twitter, facebook, google, yahoo, etc... Seems like each on has its own plugin and demands and mixing them is going to be a mess. This is for logging in users like how Stackoverflow gets things done not for using the robust features of the APIs. What I want to do is do what stackoverflow did for login but in rails.

    Great Indian Developer Summit 2010 – India's Biggest Polyglot Conference and Workshops for IT Software Professionals Bangalore, April 9, 2010: The GIDS.Web Conference and Workshops has announced the complete program of over 30 sessions on how browser and rich web technologies such as AJAX, DHTML, Mashups, Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0 technologies, and Rich UI technologies are making money and gaining market-share for some of the leading businesses in the world. The GIDS.Web track at Great Indian Developer Summit takes place 21 and 23 April 2010, at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. As one of the longest running independent developer conferences in India, GIDS.Web at the Great Indian Developer Summit 2010 is uniquely positioned to provide a blend of practical, pragmatic and immediately applicable knowledge and a glimpse of the future of technology. During 21 and 23 April 2010, GIDS.Web offers a multi-track conference, workshops, expo show floor, and networking opportunities. The first keynote at GIDS.Web is led by the leading Java EE and Ajax developer, speaker, and author Marty Hall. The best of India's Java and RIA programmers have learnt the subject from Marty's seminal books Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages (first and second editions), More Servlets and JavaServer Pages, and Core Web Programming (first and second editions) from Prentice Hall and Sun Microsystems Press. Marty's keynote address is a comparison of approaches to building rich Internet applications with Ajax. Marty says Ajax development is difficult, and there are several fundamentally different strategies to building Ajaxified Web applications. The keynote address will survey the three most important of these approaches: using an Ajax-enabled JavaScript library such as jQuery, Prototype, Scriptaculous, Dojo, or Ext/JS; using a Web framework such as JSF 2.0 or Struts 2 that has integrated Ajax support; using the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) to build "pure Java" Ajax applications. The talk will compare and contrast these three approaches, discussing the types of applications that fit best for each option. Over the course of the summit Marty will conduct several more sessions on "Choosing an Ajax/JavaScript Toolkit: A Comparison of the Most Popular JavaScript Libraries", "Pure Java Ajax: An Overview of GWT 2.0", "Integrated Ajax Support in JSF 2.0" and "Ajax Support in the Prototype JavaScript Library". The second keynote by the head of Adobe's Flash initiative in India, Ramesh Srinivasaraghavan, explores the state of art in web application development and identify trends that could transform the way we create and use web applications. The talk explains how the Adobe Flash Platform has fuelled this revolution with an integrated set of technologies for delivering the most compelling applications, content and video to the widest possible audience. The Director of Forum Nokia will explain how cloud computing coupled with mobile applications enable consumers to have access to powerful services and improved user experiences never before thought possible. • ActionMailer and Exchange

    - by Jason Nerer
    Hello Community, I successfully send Mails via SMTP using my Rails App and my Postfix Server. Now I need to move to an Exchange: Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 that has POP3 and SMTP support enabled. I use actionmailer 1.2.5 and am not able to successfully login to the server while trying to send a mail. In case I use Mail.app sending and recieving works fine as long as I change the authentication schema to "Password". Checking the server looks like so: READ Nov 18 10:37:00.509 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.my-mail-server-domain.com -- port:25 -- socket:0x11895cf20 -- thread:0x11b036a10 250-mail.my-mail-server-domain.com Hello [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 250-TURN 250-SIZE 250-ETRN 250-PIPELINING 250-DSN 250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES 250-8bitmime 250-BINARYMIME 250-CHUNKING 250-VRFY 250-X-EXPS GSSAPI NTLM LOGIN 250-X-EXPS=LOGIN 250-AUTH GSSAPI NTLM LOGIN 250-AUTH=LOGIN 250-X-LINK2STATE 250-XEXCH50 250 OK WROTE Nov 18 10:37:00.852 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.my-mail-server-domain.com -- port:25 -- socket:0x11895cf20 -- thread:0x11b036a10 AUTH LOGIN READ Nov 18 10:37:01.848 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNone] -- host:mail.my-mail-server-domain.com -- port:25 -- socket:0x11895cf20 -- thread:0x11b036a10 235 2.7.0 Authentication successful. So authentication method :login seems to be properly supported. Now when it comes to my configuration for actionmailer it looks like so: ActionMailer::Base.server_settings = { :address => "mail.my-mail-server-domain.com", :port => 25, :domain => "my-mail-server-domain.com", :authentication => :login, :user_name => "myusername", :password => "mypassword" } And I get authentication errors over and over. I also tried to change :user_name => "my-mail-server-domain.com\myusername" :user_name => "my-mail-server-domain.com\\myusername" :user_name => "myusername/my-mail-server-domain.com" :user_name => "[email protected]" but nothing works. Can anyone help me? Regards. Jason

  • jQuery ajax, firefox with 302 redirects?

    I'm having problems in Firefox with 302 redirects coming from my Rails app. Right now I have $.ajax({ url: '/model/33', type: 'POST', data: 'authenticity_token=efjowiejfoiwej&_method=put&model[value]=aaa', complete: myFunc }); function myFunc() { //do what I want } This works fine in other browsers, but in Firefox nothing happens, even using a complete callback instead of just a success. Anything I can missing here?

How is possible to remove an element from the xpath to get things work? do I have to use .xpath twice to extract data if not using full xpath? why I cannot make .at_xpath working to extract data? it works nicely here what is the difference?

  • XML Serialization is not including milliseconds in datetime field from Rails model

    By default, the datetime field from the database is being converted and stripping off the milliseconds: some_datetime = "2009-11-11T02:19:36Z" attribute_before_type_cast('some_datetime') = "2009-11-11 02:19:36.145" If I try to overrride the accessor for this attribute like; def some_datetime attribute_before_type_cast('some_datetime') end when I try "to_xml" for that model, I get the following error: NoMethodError (undefined method `xmlschema' for "2009-11-11 02:19:36.145":String): I have tried to parse the String to a Time object but can't get one to include the milliseconds; def some_datetime Time.parse(attribute_before_type_cast('some_datetime').sub(/\s/,"T").sub(/$/,"Z")) end Can anyone help get get a datetime with milliseconds rendered by to_xml?

  • Rails ActiveRecord - Best way to perform an include?

    - by dwhite
    I have three models: class Book < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :collections has_many :users, :through => :collections end class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :collections has_many :books, :through => :collections end class Collection < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :book belongs_to :user end I'm trying to display a list of the books and have a link to either add or remove from the user's collection. I can't quite figure out the best syntax to do this. For example, if I do the following: Controller class BooksController < ApplicationController def index @books = Book.all end end View ... <% if book.users.include?(current_user) %> ... or obviously the inverse... ... <% if current_user.books.include?(book) %> ... Then queries are sent for each book to check on that include? which is wasteful. I was thinking of adding the users or collections to the :include on the Book.all, but I'm not sure this is the best way. Effectively all I need is the book object and just a boolean column of whether or not the current user has the book in their collection, but I'm not sure how to forumlate the query in order to do that. Thanks in advance for your help. -Damien

    UPD class User < ActiveRecord::Base Paperclip.options[:swallow_stderr] = false has_attached_file :photo, :styles => { :square => "100%", :large => "100%" }, :convert_options => { :square => "-auto-orient -geometry 70X70#", :large => "-auto-orient -geometry X300" }, :storage => :s3, :s3_credentials => "#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/s3.yml", :path => ":attachment/:id/:style.:extension", :bucket => 'mybucket' validates_attachment_size :photo, :less_than => 5.megabyte end Works great on local machine, but gives me an error on Heroku: There was an error processing the thumbnail for stream.20143 The thing is I want to auto-orient photos before resizing, so they resized properly. The only working variant now(thanks to jonnii) is resizing without auto-orient: ... as_attached_file :photo, :styles => { :square => "70X70#", :large => "X300" }, :storage => :s3, :s3_credentials => "#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/s3.yml", :path => ":attachment/:id/:style.:extension", :bucket => 'mybucket' ... How to pass additional convert options to paperclip on Heroku?

  • Routing in php vs routing in rails..

    - by piemesons
    I was working on php from past 1 yr and now a days i m learning rails. In rails:-- Routing takes an incoming URL and decodes it into a set of parameters that are used by Rails to dispatch to the appropriate controller and action for example rs.recognize_path "/blog/show/123" {:controller=>"blog", :action=>"show", :id=>"123"} M i right?? We mention this (written down) line of code in our routes.rb under config directory to tell rails how to handle the request like "/blog/show/123" using this line of code. map.connect "blog/show/:id", :controller => "blog", :action => "show", :id => /\d+/ Fine.. Now in php when we do something like this www.xxx.com/profile.php?profile_id=2 How the request is sent to the requested page. Means i never wrote anything for routing in php, then how this request has been handled. How the rounting is done in php (anything i missed during my learning/working in php) R u getting what i am asking. Please let me know if there is any problem.

  • Refinery CMS (Rails): Creating a plugin or plugins with multiple models and relationships

    - by jklina
    My goal is to create a way for an admin to create two models in the Refinery admin: Campaigns and Videos I would like to have it setup so that a Campaign has many Videos and that each Video belongs to a Campaign. Both Videos and Campaigns will have a title, description, and a preview image. I'm not certain of the best way to go about this. Is it possible to setup two plugins and form a relationship between the two? Or, should I create one plugin with both models. If someone could point me in the right direction or a good example of a solution to a similar problem, I would be grateful. Thank you for looking!

  • How to process images with paperclip on Heroku?

    - by Yuri
    I use Heroku for my app. I want to auto-orient image and then to resize it. So I do: class User < ActiveRecord::Base Paperclip.options[:swallow_stderr] = false has_attached_file :photo, :styles => { :square => "100%", :large => "100%" }, :convert_options => { :square => "-auto-orient -geometry 70X70#", :large => "-auto-orient -geometry X300" }, :storage => :s3, :s3_credentials => "#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/s3.yml", :path => ":attachment/:id/:style.:extension", :bucket => 'mybucket' validates_attachment_size :photo, :less_than => 5.megabyte end It does not work with error: There was an error processing the thumbnail for stream.20143 What am I doing wrong?

  • Sorting deeply nested attributes in Rails

    - by Senthil
    I want to be able to drag and drag App model which is nested under Category model. http://railscasts.com/episodes/196-nested-model-form-part-1 's the Railscast I've tried to follow. Category controller def move params[:apps].each_with_index do |id, index| Category.last.apps.update(['position=?', index+1], ['id=?', Category.last.id]) end render :nothing => true end I'm able to sort Categories with something similar, but since I'm updating an attribute, I'm having trouble. def sort params[:categories].each_with_index do |id, index| Category.update_all(['position=?', index+1], ['id=?', id]) end render :nothing => true end Any help is appreciated.

  • Database design for summarized data

    - by holden
    I have a new table I'm going to add to a bunch of other summarized data, basically to take some of the load off by calculating weekly avgs. My question is whether I would be better off with one model over the other. One model with days of the week as a column with an additional column for price or another model as a series of fields for the DOW each taking a price. I'd like to know which would save me in speed and/or headaches? Or at least the trade off. IE. ID OBJECT_ID MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT SUN SOURCE OR ID OBJECT_ID DAYOFWEEK PRICE SOURCE
