• Accessing Windows 7 Printer from Ubuntu Linux via LPR/LPD or Samba

  Hi, I'm having difficulty printing from my Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) based PC to a printer connected to a Windows 7 machine. I was trying to connect using Samba (version 3.5.6) but this always brings up an authentication screen which never accepts any password I use. So I read somewhere that an alternative is to access the Windows printer via LPR/LPD. I added an LPR/LPD printer in Windows 7, but even within Windows 7, I am not able to print as the print que monitor shows as 'printer busy'. The printer in question is an Epson Stylus DX7400 and works fine when using the standard USB ports....but doesn't when I use with the LPR/LPD ports. I even opened up the TCP/IP port 515 in my McAfee firewall without any success. Any help with this would be highly appreciated. Additionally, does anyone have any idea how I can get Samba working for me?

• Radeon 6950 - Garbling of text and graphics in certain Windows only

  This morning I noticed the text in Gmail (in Firefox 4) looked a little funny (kind of thin, maybe some color fringing). I went to work and thought it might be some ClearType issue or something with the way Direct way that FF4 draws to the screen. When I came back from work (I left the computer on), the problem was much worse - way beyond ClearType nit-picking. The text was barely readable. I opened Chrome and there was no such problem. It seems like only Windows that use hardware acceleration are garbled, and ones that use GDI are not. But, I fired up Dragon Age and didn't notice any problems (I only really looked at the main menu though). Here is a link to a screen shot that illustrates the problem. Notice how the Windows Live Mesh window is completely unreadable, the text in Firefox 4 (left) is pretty bad, while Chrome, the Windows Control Panel, and the task bar are perfectly fine. The fact that the problem shows up in screen shots and that it only happens in certain Windows makes me confident that the problem cannot be with the monitor or DVI cable. I am using the AMD Radeon drivers from 4/27/11. The card I have (MSI Frozr II) came with a slight overclock (810Mhz) out of the box, but it looks like when I'm on the Windows desktop it's not running at full clock (CCC reports 450Mhz). Still, I underclocked it to the stock reference clock (800Mhz) and it made no difference. The idle temperature according to Afterburner is 42-44 Celsius, which seems a tad high but not enough to cause a problem - it's cold to the touch if I open up the machine. What the heck could be causing this? The problem varies in intensity. As we speak I'm in Firefox and things look better than they did earlier - it'll probably get worse again soon. I installed the Turkish language pack from Windows Update but some texts like "Welcome" "Shutting Down" and "Starting Windows" are still in English, but the others are translated into Turkish correctly.   I have setup a dragonflyBSD NFS server and a windows 2008 NFS client(it's in the linux-KVM). The dragonflyBSD exports file like this: /tank -mapall=root windows-client and i setup my windows 2008 a NFS client all right. There is my win cmd to mount NFS. mount \\dragonfly-server\tank e:\ After finished my configuration. I found the windows client can mount the remote tank partition. And i can create a file or a dir. But when i try to delete the file i just create. It alerts permission deny. You must have the permission.And the same result when i try to write to the text i create in the NFS partition I don't know why i just can create the file through NFS, but can't do any thing else. Is there any body can help?

  I just installed windows 7 on dell 4600 desktop. the Audio card is a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2. I've look all over, and I can't find a driver for windows 7. I've also looked at Vista Drivers. It seems Dell is not supporting Windows 7 with this computer. I've got a work around, but would like a driver if possible. Any help would be appreciated.

• How to remove $data stream from file in windows 8

  Windows for a while now has added an additional hidden stream to files that were downloaded from the internet. If you attempted to use these files, you'd get all kinds of odd behavior as windows was detecting this additional stream and then preventing the app / exe from getting all sorts of security clearance. But in previous versions of windows you could right click on a file, go to properties then click 'Unblock' which removed the extra stream. Windows 8 seems to be doing the additional streams trick, but I haven't yet found a way to remove them using the win 8 UI. Anyone know how to do this?

• Large temp files created in Windows Server 2003 temp folder

  I'm managing a Windows Server 2003 with around 30 GB space in primary partition. A couple of times the server has crashed with error message saying that the C: drive is full. After searching folders to free up space, I found that lot of temp files being created in C:\WINNT\Temp and some of them of enormous size with more than 2GB. The temp files have common name, Efs###.tmp. Since we encrypt files frequently using Windows's EFS, I initially suspected Windows encryption. But after reading the documentation, I found that Efs###.tmp are in fact created by EFS but they are created only under the folder which you're currently encrypting, not in Temp folder. This looks very strange since Efs##.tmp files shouldn't be created under C:\WINNT\Temp unless someone tried to encrypt that Temp folder itself. The server has Tivoli Backup client. Could that be messing with windows Encryption? Can anyone shed some light on what could be causing the issue?

  Windows 7 has the full and basic aero themes that can be changed inside personalization. Windows used to automatically disable Windows Aero (transparency) when I unplug my laptop from the mains. I reset the theme and now it doesn't do this anymore. I can't seem to find how to enable this again. I've checked the advanced power options and control panel but turning back on this feature is eluding me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

• Automate creation of Windows startup script?

  Is there a good way to automate installing local startup (rather than login) scripts in Windows XP and Windows 7, via the command line, WMI, COM, or otherwise (even Win32 if it comes to that)? I need to setup a local startup script on a large number of computers, and unfortunately, Active Directory is absolutely not an option. I would like to write a script or small program that I can run on each computer to perform the startup script installation in order to save myself a lot of error-prone point-and-click manual labor. I see that when one uses gpedit.msc to create a local startup script, information about the script gets stored in the registry here: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\Scripts\Startup However, if you create such a script and then delete its registry key, the script will remain listed in the local Group Policy editor; as is so often the case in Windows, apparently there is more going on there than meets the eye. This leads me to question whether it's safe to manually add subkeys for new startup scripts here (I wouldn't want my script to be overwritten by later changes made using the local Group Policy editor, for instance)... Another option that's occurred to me is to create an item in the Task Scheduler configured to run at system startup. However, my concerns there are twofold: Can this be automated any more easily? For instance, the at command doesn't appear to let you schedule a task for system startup, and WMI's Win32_ScheduledJob interface looks unreliable (it fails to show any of my currently scheduled tasks, for one thing). Would I be able to prevent users from logging in until the scheduled startup task is completed, as can be done with "normal" Windows startup scripts? • How can I make Windows XP bootable again?

  Some time ago, I replaced my hard drive. Foolishly, I imaged the individual partitions, not the entire drive. That meant that my system was unbootable. For my primary OS (Linux), that was no problem as I could simply re-run GRUB. However Windows XP remains unbootable. The machine in question is a netbook which doesn't have a CD drive or a restore partition, so I can't boot from a Windows CD and run fixmbr. How can I fix Windows? Here's a picture of what I see when I try to boot Windows from the GRUB menu: I don't actually have an XP CD, since of my two machines, the netbook in question has neither a restore partition nor a CD, and my other XP machine only came with a restore partition. So I'll also need a way to get hold of the necessary files.

  I've just started using Windows 7 and am instantly finding one aspect pretty annoying. When I open certain files from Windows Explorer / Windows Search results etc then I then cannot save them as it throws up the following message box. C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts You don’t have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead? [Yes] [No] However I can't see any way of opening the file with elevated permissions. Is the only workflow to first open the application with elevated permissions then open the file?

• Cant install windows 7(boot problem)

  First of all, I cant boot my windows 7. I get a black screen with a cursor up in the left corner. So, I tried using windows 7 installation which I've put on my flash drive. To boot from the drive, I've changed the boot order to boot from the drive first. It boots but does not find any HDD to install the windows on(which is pretty logic, I dont boot the HDD soon enough for the installer). but if i put the HDD in front of the flash drive in the boot order, it will just try to load windows 7 and i will get the black screen again. I've tried putting the HDD first and clicking f8 a lot. All I've got is an error. Something about some software change. I dunno. Help me please, cant do anything with my laptop till then.

• What happens to a Windows Dynamic Drive

  In my windows (Windows 7) I have two primary logical volumns, One is on a SSD harddrive for my operating system and installed software, and my other is a Dynamic volume for my stored media. (I do alot of work with HD footage) I have all my media on the original DV tapes for backup purposes, just having them all available on my harddrive at all times is a major convience for me, well worth the few hundred dollar investment those 2TB drives were. Anyway, Long story short is my windows install has become problematic and I want to reformat windows. Does this, or will this effect my dynamic drive in any way? I've got almost 3 TB of video on there and i really dont want to re-import all my DV tapes.

Is there a go-to site to have a barebones Windows virtual environment on a mac? Something like Windows XP with nLite done for a mac install? (Using Parallels or something else.) • Windows 8 - Synaptics driver - Mouse keeps freezing

  I have Win-8 Pro installed on my Dell XPS. This has Synaptic PS/2 Port TouchPad. As I upgraded the Laptop from Win7 to Win8 all my factory Mouse software (along with other preinstalled software) was all deleted. So for the mouse, I installed Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v16.3.15.1. Problem - every few seconds (or minutes at times), the mouse freezes. Windows is still working, it's just the mouse. I have to wait 5-15 seconds before the mouse works again. I thought this was because the Synaptic Driver I am installing is not Win-8 compatible but this is not the case. It seems the mouse freezes when Windows is working, loading or opening new programs/windows. I have the same problem in my other Laptop which has upgraded Win8 pro. This is a Dell Studio. What's causing this?

Now that I have Windows 7, I have been warned, by the OS itself and later confirmed on the internet, that Partition Magic Pro has compatibility issues with Windows 7. So, I am asking you which software partitioning software do you recommend. It would be great if it was freeware but I know it is hard to find a good parititioning app that's free, so, if you know a good one that's paid, there's no problem and please mention it in your reply. • Windows 7 - media sharing extremely flakey (XBox 360)

  I have constant headaches with Windows Media Library sharing, which I'm using to share my video library (a whole lot of AVI files on my computer's hard drive) with the XBox 360. I have the whole setup working, so setup and basic configuration is not an issue. The issue is that Windows Media Library frequently fails to notice additions and modifications to the "watched" folders. Not only that, but often after I've added something new to the library, it fails to transmit this new library information to the 360, as is demonstrated by the fact that, using that 360, I navigate to my video library and the new folders don't show up in the list. Often the only way to get the 360 to see the changes is to exit out of "Videos" on the 360, then remove all videos from Windows Media Library, go back into videos on the 360 to confirm that nothing is shared, then re-add a few videos (but not too many) in Windows Media Library, then go back into the videos in the 360. The whole thing is a real pain in the bum and I really wish I could just add all my videos to Windows Media Library and have it keep watch without me having to kick it, and have the 360 pick up changes without me having to constantly rebuild the library. Any ideas?

  Firstly, I am not at all familiar with windows batch file programing. Recently I am curious about how tomcat sets itself as a windows service using a batch file. I downloaded the service.bat file from tomcat 6. However, I still don't understand some part of it. I guess this is the line that the batch actually register the exe file to the OS, is it right?
