  • Roadblocks in creating a custom operating system

    It seems to me that the most common overly ambitious project that programmers (esp. Comp. Sci. grads) try to tackle is building your own operating system. (Trying to create your own programming language + compiler is probably even more common but not nearly as ambitious.) For those (like myself) foolish enough to try: aside from the sheer size, what are the biggest *gotcha*s or unexpected roadblocks you've encountered in trying to create your own OS from the ground up?   • android app working on simulator but not on phone

    i have this app that i developed and it works great on the simulator with no errors what so ever. but the moment i try to run the same on the phone for testing, the app crashes stating filenotfoundexception. it says the file /res/drawable/divider_horizontal.9.png is missing. but actually speaking, i have never referenced that file through my code. i believe its a system/os file that is unavailable. i have a custom list view, i guess its the divider there... could somebody please suggest what is wrong here. i believe this is a similar issue discussed here..but i am unable to make     This might be a bit dev-heavy for the site... but here goes. I installed the macports version of sudo. All is well, except for one thing. Using python 2.6 to expand ~ to the user's home directory results in a different output than the version of sudo that comes with Snow Leopard. For example consider the following python code: #expand_home_dir.py import os os.path.expanduser('~') Below are 3 different calls of the code listed above.     Hello, I'll start by saying that I am very, very new to Python. I used to have a Windows/Dos batch file in order to launch Mencoder with the right set of parameters, without having to type them each time. Things got messy when I tried to improve my script, and I decided that it would be a good opportunity to try coding something in python.     I'm trying to compile a very simple wxPython script into an executable by using PyInstaller on Windows Vista. The Python script is nothing but a Hello World in wxPython. I'm trying to get that up and running as a Windows executable before I add any of the features that the program needs to have. But I'm already stuck. I've jumped through some loops in regards to MSVCR90.DLL, MSVCP90.DLL and MSVCPM90.DLL, which I ended up copying from my Visual Studio installation (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\x86\Microsoft.VC90.CRT).   • SSRS 2005 - Usability analysis - Is SSRS a good option for this scenario?

    How practical is it to consider SSRS 2005 or SSRS 2008 as a reporting solution for a report that has to show reports with millions of records (records vary from 3 to 10 million)? Is there any threshold on the size of report in SSRS? How do I know that for a huge report, wheather SSRS will consume the whole memory and start paging the operations to disk or it will give a memory leak error? Even if I keep on increasing the memory how can I be sure that certain memory will be sufficient for such huge reports for the report server? All the above questions are haunting me because I have a dedicated report server with a decent hardware and OS configuration (8 processors, 8GB RAM, 64 bit OS and 64 bit SQL Server 2005). Still my report with around 2 million records is taking more than 6 minutes and going from one page to another takes 3 minutes!!! My datasource is on separate server and when I execute only the stored proc there, it returns the results in less than 2 minutes.

    I'm having trouble making folders that I create go where I want them to go. For each file in a given folder, I want to create a new folder, then put that file in the new folder. My problem is that the new folders I create are being put in the parent directory, not the one I want. My example: def createFolder(): dir_name = 'C:\\Users\\Adrian\\Entertainment\\Coding\\Test Folder' files = os.listdir(dir_name) for i in files: os.mkdir(i) Let's say that my files in that directory are Hello.txt and Goodbye.txt. When I run the script, it makes new folders for these files, but puts them one level above, in 'C:\Users\Adrian\Entertainment\Coding. How do I make it so they are created in the same place as the files, AKA 'C:\Users\Adrian\Entertainment\Coding\Test Folder'?

    Hi there, I'm having trouble making a simple shape move along a path in IE7 (the only version of IE I tried, actually). The following code works fine in chrome and firefox, but not IE.   • Project Active Executable can no longer be iPhone 3.2

    I don't know how much you can help me because its under the NDA, but I recently updated to the OS 4 beta 3 xcode version. My project worked fine under 3.2 but under 4.0 parts are a not quite right I assume because it is still being developed. Every other installation of the beta sdk I could go into the project settings and select the iPhone 3.2 sdk and then change the target iPhone OS in the top left of Xcode but not this one. If I select 3.2 it still loads on 4.0 it seems I only have the 4.0 simulator. Under Active Target there is only 4.0. Any ideas how to get the 3.2 Simulator back?

The problem I'm facing now is that the traffic is properly routed throught the fcgi file, but the file itself shows up as plain text in the browser.     I'm still getting my feet wet with the iPhone SDK, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to get the ConnectionKit framework working for an iPhone app. I know it was developed for the desktop OS, so I'm not sure what sort of dependencies it has and whether or not it could be shoehorned into the iPhone OS. In my case, I would like to use its FTP functionality, though having access to this entire framework could prove useful for future projects as well. Any ideas or experience trying this?   • Windows Vista, Default Programs API, file format associations, and (un)installers - explosive mix!

    My application is a rather well behaved Windows citizen, so when I ported it to Windows Vista/7 I replaced my custom file format association code with support for the Default Programs API. However I ran into a problem when trying to make uninstaller for my application - there seems to be no way to remove file format associations via Default Programs API. I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::ClearUserAssociations but it actually removes all associations, including the ones for other applications - completely restoring default state of the OS (which is of course unacceptable). I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::SetAppAsDefault to return file format associations to the previous "owner" - but it does not help, because my application handles many unique file formats which the OS does not support and there is no previous "owners". And Windows does not allow to pass empty strings to SetAppAsDefault... So what do I do? Any good solutions?

  • Handling database failover for Rails applications on FreeBSD

    I'm working on implementing database (Postgresql) failover for a Rails app that runs with Passenger/FreeBSD. Due to certain constraints regarding the server OS, it's necessary to continue using FreeBSD (as opposed to say, Ubuntu). I'm finding it to be quite a challenge to have failover handled within the Rails application, by way of a customised database adapter due to the fact that this application will be load-balanced between several webservers, and the multiple Rails processes that Passenger spawned in each webserver. I previously looked at setting up Pacemaker/Corosync to manage database server failover on a common IP but unfortunately I wasn't able to get past building the packages on FreeBSD. It does work rather well on Ubuntu 10.04 but I'm not likely to be able to use Ubuntu due to the OS constraints. I'm considering a custom witness daemon that simply pings the primary DB server, and this witness daemon switches all the webservers to the standby DB server when the primary becomes uncontactable (permanently/temporarily), to avoid split-brain. Though I would really like to know if there is a way to get Pacemaker(or something similar) to do the switch on FreeBSD.

    I have developed a screen saver for MAC OS X. Screen saver plays flash files. Whene I run screen saver on display resolution higher than 1300 X 1000 then flash files play very jerky / laggy. When I run it in low resolution then files play fine.Even flash files are playing fine in desktop application. This problem is more on 10.6 Snow Leopard. I am unable to find out the reason whether it is OS screensaver engine problem or flash files problem. I know rendering increases on high resolution but there should be solution for this problem
