  • How do I access a hard drive from a computer where windows is deleted?

    Here is the current situation: My cousin deleted Windows from his hard drive (yeah, don't ask...). His hard drive still has about 200 GB of files on it that he may want to recover before we format the hard drive and reinstall Windows 7 to it. Is there a way I can create a bootable CD from some utility that will allow me to access the files on the hard drive, and copy it to a flash drive? What's the best utility for that?

    Is it possible to have an erroneous URL remain in the address bar while redirecting the user to a URL within my domain? I want www.domain.com/forum to be the actual site being served in all 404 circumstances but I don't want the referring URL to be rewritten (other than the domain portion, which is being done on the registrar level).   • Moving Server to new Hardware - SBS 2008

    Hi, We have very quickly out-grown our Small Business Server 2008 current hardware and have decided to purchase a complete new server. What is the best and easiest way to move the server to new hardware? It is one complete box, we do not have any SAN's or any complicated setup. We do have a couple of SQL databases running on the server and we also use Exchange. I'm sure there must be some easy way to move everything :-)

Is there a way to add PHP support to a current Xcode version (3.2.2 or later)? Currently I use NetBeans for PHP development and I've tried some other IDEs.   • Quantifying the effects of partition mis-alignment

    I'm experiencing some significant performance issues on an NFS server. I've been reading up a bit on partition alignment, and I think I have my partitions mis-aligned. I can't find anything that tells me how to actually quantify the effects of mis-aligned partitions. Some of the general information I found suggests the performance penalty can be quite high (upwards of 60%) and others say it's negligible. What I want to do is determine if partition alignment is a factor in this server's performance problems or not; and if so, to what degree? So I'll put my info out here, and hopefully the community can confirm if my partitions are indeed mis-aligned, and if so, help me put a number to what the performance cost is. Server is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. RAID controller is a Dell PERC H700 w/512MB cache (Linux sees this as a LSI MegaSAS 9260). OS is CentOS 5.6, home directory partition is ext3, with options “rw,data=journal,usrquota”.   • What are some fast methods for navigating to frequently used folders in Windows 7?

    (This is a followup question from my previous question.) In windows XP I used to be able to quickly navigate to frequently used folders by making use of the 'Favorites' menu item and the hotkey behaviour. In certain conditions it could be set up so that getting to a particular folder was as easy as alt-a x (and without a file explorer window open it was as fast as win-e alt-a x). I am struggling to get anywhere near this speed in Windows 7 and would like to solicit advice from others regarding fast folder navigation to see if I am missing any methods. My current way to navigate quickly is basically move hand to mouse move cursor to navigation pane/pain. scroll all the way to the top (because normally I the panel is focused on whatever deep directory structure I am already in). sift through my 50+ favorites to get the one I want, or click a link to a folder that contains further links in some sort of 'pseudo-tree' functionality. select it. This is slower than my previous method by upwards of an order of magnitude. There are a couple of things I've contemplated: add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the favorites menu. add expandable folders, not just direct links, to the start menu. add links of my favorite folders to a submenu of the start menu so that they come up when I search them. They do but this still rather cumbersome started using 7stacks - url here (I cannot link the url directly due to lack of reputation but http://www.alastria.com/index.php?p=software-7s). This is about the closest I've gotten to some sort of compact, customizeable, easy to access, tree based navigation structure. How do you power users quickly navigate to your favorite folders? Are there keyboard shortcuts I am missing? Can someone recommend other apps or addon or extensions that can achieve this sort of functionality? The Current solution (thanks to the answers below) I am going to use is a combination of Autohotkey and 7stacks - autohotkey to launch 7stacks, 7stacks with the 'menu' stack type for fast, key-enabled navigation to folders organised in a tree structure. This solves about 90% of the issue, the only issues are (note that these are really minor, I am really splitting hairs more than anything here) Can't use this for existing folder navigation (ie already have a explorer window open, want to go to another directory) A bit more cumbersome to add/remove entries to compared to xp favorites. A little slower than xp favorites. Whatever. I'm happy. Thanks guys.     I have two Bazaar (bzr) repositories that have very similar content. I'm trying to identify the differences and incrementally synchronize. My current strategy is to bzr add files to both repos and then use bzr merge to identify and resolve conflicts. The problem is that even if the file contents are identical it creates a conflict and a .moved file. What can I do to stop these conflicts or use a better workflow?

    I wonder if it would be possible to "upgrade" from an OpenIndiana install (151a) to the current Solaris release (11.1) using the IPS. What I have done so far: added the "solaris" publisher using pkg set-publisher -g http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release/ solaris removed the "opensolaris.org" and "openindiana.org" publishers (just to make sure) tried to start the update process using pkg update --accept or explicitly setting the release name pkg image-update --accept --be-name Solaris_11 - both backed out stating there are "No updates available for this image".

    When I create and store macros in Excel 2007 using the Personal file in the XLstart folder then open and go to close Excel using the close buttom in the upper right hand corner I now have to click it twice to completely close Excel however if I use the Excel Exit button by clicking on the Office 2007 button first Excel will close on one. Is there away I can store macros for use with all workbooks I open with Excel and be able to close on one from the close button in the upper right hand corner after saving the current workbook I have be working on?

I could get it to run on 127.0.0.1, but it seems that no network packets ever leave the current computer that it is installed on. It tests for known security holes in a network.   • Streaming Netflix through Wifi kills all other devices

    I have a "Belkin N150" Router. My current setup is wired connection to my personal tv and xbox with wireless going to the Wii and Bedroom laptop. Anytime I try streaming Netflix Instant Queue on the Wii, every other device has problems. The Wii works fine but everything else's connection is destroyed. Streaming through the Xbox doesn't create any issues for other devices. What kind of issue is occurring and how can I fix it?
