  • Explorer.exe hangup during move large file into external drive

    During move large files (700mb+) to external drive formated NTFS via USB 3.0 I've noticed strange things about explorer.exe (I am using Windows 7 up to date) Sometimes after move file the explorer get stuck (ie. it can happen after few files during move of several large files) - moving window freeze and I am unable to kill explorer (via taskmgr, or cmdline TASKKILL). In command line I've got something like this (taskmgr shows that explorer.exe is still running - I've got the same PID every time I try to kill it and no diagnostic message): C:\Windows\system32TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe SUKCES: proces "explorer.exe" o identyfikatorze PID 6296 zostal zakonczony. C:\Windows\system32TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe SUKCES: proces "explorer.exe" o identyfikatorze PID 6296 zostal zakonczony. If I try to run another explorer.exe process at this point, I got desktop icon and start bar back but I cannot open any explorer window After few minutes explorer.exe finally dies and I am able to rerun it without rebooting File that I moved have two copies - one local and one on the external drive (the original file wasn't delete after move); Both copies seems to contain the same data (same length and CRC info) If this happen during move of multiply files, only some files are moved and one of them have two copies (both locally and on the external drive) What can I do to fix those explorer hangs? Added: The same problem exist when copying files, it hangsup between large files Similar problem exist when I tried to use TotalCommander (x64): copying paused at 80% of one of files, TC didn't hung up (but clicking cancel in copying dialog box doesn't have any effect). During this pause I can't kill TotalCmd.exe just like Explorer.exe Added (2): This problem seems to disappear when I use 32 bit applications (like TotalCommander (x86) ), but I need to do more testing to be sure of this Added (3): There are several errors in event log, source: disk, id: 11, qualifiers: 49156, task: 0, level: 2, keywords: 0x80000000000000 (This may be important, and I forgot to mention this): Main disk is encrypted via Truecrypt (boot-in password)

    This Server Fault blog post shows some tools you can use to view interference on your wireless network: blog.serverfault.com/2012/01/05/a-studied-approach-at-wifi-part-2/. They mention Vistumbler, which only works on PC's. Is there a similar tool I can use to measure wireless interference on a Mac? Also, is it better to be on a channel with many AP's, each with a weak signal, or on a channel with only a few AP's, but a strong signal?

  • Printing barcode labels

    I am trying to print barcodes for a library. I have generated a list of sequential numbers and copied them into Word 2003. I want Library name, barcode font, barcode number printed in an Avery 5160 label sheet. I can get it to work by going to tools, letters and mailing, Envelopes and Labels, labels tab and type in what data I want. I don't see how I can pull this data from the list in the word document rather than just what I type.

  • Diagnose remote desktop freezes in Windows 7 when no BSOD?

    Okay, I'm getting no joy from Asus or Microsoft on this, so hoping for some clues on how to narrow down the cause. I have very frequent OS freezes, always & only when running Remote Destkop Client (mstsc) in Windows 7 x64. I never have a bluescreen, and there is never a minidump. The display & input just freezes -- no keyboard, no mouse, and sound will just continue the last wavelength if any. So far, I can't find a way to trap the hang given that there's no bluescreen; advanced startup & recovery settings for system failure are "Write an event" checked, "Automatically restart" checked, and "Kernel memory dump". I've updated to the lasted BIOS, and tried a few different graphics drivers, both generic & ATI. I've also tried disabling Aero, and everything about the remote desktop experience (incrementally unchecked every box in the mstsc - options - experience tab), even disabled/unplugged external monitor to make sure it wasn't a dual-monitor issue. My specs are: Asus G73jh notebook 8GB RAM ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series graphics (recently tried driver versions 8.791.0.0, 8.801.0.0) American Megatrends G73jh.211 BIOS (7/27/2010) Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Windows Memory Diagnostic passed all of the following at least 3 times with no errors: MATS+ INVC LRAND Stride6 WMATS+ WINVC This notebook is better than most at removing heat (laudable vent design), so I'm not inclined to suspect thermal causes (especially since running 1080p video for hours has never caused a freeze, but mstsc does, reliably, within 5 minutes to an hour). This did seem to start happening after a Windows Update, but I've since reverted every patch applied since a week before the first occurrence, with no joy. (And I'd only had the PC for a couple weeks before that, so it could have been chance + less actual time spent remoting at the beginning.) I'm at my wits end, and I bought this laptop primarily as a remote terminal client (go figure, right?) Any ideas on how to identify the cause of this? Thanks!

Any good tools out there to give push-button deployment of new revisions? I know it's not a hard script to write, but when you start thinking about things like roll-back and multiple sites, it gets complicated enough that I'd rather not re-invent the wheel.

  • Slow and unresponssive network

    Ive have the Nokia N900 mobile phone (running Maemo linux), and my device is really slow while using the wifi and trying to get stuff online (checking mail, loading pages). The webbrowsers itself (MicroB, Firefox, Opera) starts fast. Yesterday ive tried to set the dns to googles but that did not solve the case. Is there, and how do i check/verify my connection to the internet if im connected to my home wifi in linux? (tools, other then ping :D)

  • computer freezes but music continues

    Recently I have had a problem where my computer will freeze completely but if I happen to be streaming Pandora in a tab that will continue playing. If I wait about 2-5 minutes it will eventually come back and start working normally. I also noticed that during the period that it is unresponsive that the HDD activity light stays lit the whole time, not flashing. I've ran memtest86+ and a diagnostic from Western Digital for my HDD model and none of them reported any errors.   • Google Drive terminates without error on startup

    I've used Google Drive for awhile now, but it won't start up after installing on my latest system re-build. I'm still using the same OS, hardware, and basic software load (antivirus, firewall, etc.) that I have for years during which I had not previously had problems with Drive. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Google Drive Version: 1.12.5329.1887 Now, whenever I try to run Google Drive, it just spawns two instances of the executable which die shortly after. No error messages are posted to the desktop, and nothing indicating any problem is written to the Event Log. After some research, I've yet to find anyone having the same problem who's found an answer. I did find out how to run Google Drive in diagnostic mode, using the --vv parameter at the command line.   • Figuring out which PC part is faulty

    I have an odd scenario and I'm having trouble figuring out which is the faulty component. First of all, the video doesn't work, monitor says it's not getting a signal. Monitor's not faulty (works on other computer) so the first suspect was video card. However 2 things make me think it's not the video card. (Don't have another machine with PCIe around to test definitively) First, the GPU fan is spinning so it's getting power. Second, tried putting in an older PCI video card that is known to be working (pulled out of another working machine) and there's still no video. Normally if it's not the video card I'd suspect the motherboard, but everything's getting power on the mobo, so I'm not sure. The case apparently doesn't have system speakers, so can't hear any of the diagnostic beeps either. Also not sure whether a faulty CPU would cause no image at all either. The parts are brand new so something's going to get RMA'd but I'm not sure which component is to blame in this case. (Only slightly related, but I also accidentally put too much thermal paste on the CPU. The fan/heatsink instructions said to put the whole tube which seemed like a lot compared to previous experience, and as I started squeezing I knew it was definitely too much and stopped at about 1/3 but against my better judgement I didn't wipe any off. I'm not sure whether that would cause problems other than not cooling as effectively as it should)

    Note: I'm not sure what to search for so guidance on that may be just as valuable as an answer. I'm looking for a way to visually compare activity of two applications (in this case a webserver with php communicating with the system or mysql or network devices, etc) such that I can compare the performance at a glance. I know there are tools to generate data dumps from benchmarks for apache and some available for php for tracing that you can dump and analyse but what I'm looking for is something that can report performance metrics visually from data on calls (what called what, how long did it take, how much memory did it consume, how can that be represented visually in a call stack) and present it graphically as if it were a topology or layered visual with different elements of system calls occupying different layers. A typical visual may consist of (e.g. using swim diagrams as just one analogy): Network (details here relevant to network diagnostics) | ^ back out v | Linux (details here related to firewall/routing diagnostics) ^ back to network | | V ^ back to system Apache (details here related to web request) | | ^ response to V | apache PHP (etc) PHP---------->other accesses to php files/resources----- | ^ v | MySQL (total time) MySQL | ^ V | Each call listed + time + tables hit/record returned My aim would be to be able to 'inspect' a request/range of requests over a period of time to see what constituted the activity at that point in time and trace it from beginning to end as a diagnostic tool. Is there any such work in this direction? I realise it would be intensive on the server, but the intention is to benchmark and analyse processes against each other for both educational and professional reasons and a visual aid is a great eye-opener compared to raw statistics or dozens of discrete activity vs time graphs. It's hard to show the full cycle. Any pointers welcome. Thanks!   • Innotop and Monit to kill thread using too much resources

    Instead of restarting the whole MYSQL process, sometimes I just want to kill the offending thread instead of making everything go down. Usually the spike in CPU is when a bot is crawling the first pages of pagination of my site (over 70.000 paginated results, 45 items per page). Is there a way I could do this automatically using monit and innotop? I couldn't find relevant information on Google, that's why I'm asking here. If these two tools aren't par to the task, which ones should I use?

  • Rails /tmp/cache/assets permissions issue using Debian virtual machine hosted on OS X Lion

    I am running Parallels Desktop 7 on OS X Lion. I have a VM with Debian installed, and inside that VM I setup a Rails development environment. I am using Parallels Tools to share out my OS X home directory to the VM - the goal here is to run the Rails server on the VM, but host the files on OS X (so they are automatically backed up, and so I can use tools like Textmate to develop with). Everything seems to work with the shared directory - my Debian user can read, write, and execute files. However, when I cloned a recent Rails project from Git, I got an error message when it tried to compile the CSS assets. My symptoms are exactly the same as in the question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7556774/rails-sprocket-error-compiling-css-assest-chown-issue I believe this is permissions-based, but it is really weird. My entire Rails project directory has permissions set to 777 and my Debian user owns it. If I navigate into /tmp/cache/assets, those permissions are the same. However, the three-character directories Rails is creating (DCE, DA1, D05, etc...) are being created without write permissions! If I refresh the Rails page a few times, about 4 or 5 (with Rails creating new three-character directories every time), eventually it will create one of the directories with the proper 777 permissions and everything will work! This will persist until I make a change to the CSS files and it has to recompile. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? I can't fathom why it is creating temp directories with incorrect permissions, or why after a few refreshes the good permissions kick in and it works... It definitely seems to be an issue with the share, since if I move the project into a different directory on the VM, it seems to work fine. On the OS X side, I've given the shared folder 777 permissions as well, but no dice...any ideas? Update I've found that the number of times I need to refresh before it works is not random - it has to do with how many assets are being compiled. For example, if I edit one of my CSS files, and there are four CSS files in the app/assets/stylesheets directory, I have to refresh four times before the app will finally work without the operation not permitted error...

  • Log backups "stalling" on SQL 2008?

    I have interited a box running SQL Server 2008 and Windows 2003, and have had a few events where largeish (35GB) log backups "stall", both before and after the installation of SQL 2008 SP1. The server log ships to a standby, so regular log backups are taken at 15 minute intervals. However, after an index reorg causes the log to grow to about 35GB (on a DB with about 17GB of data), the next log backup runs to ~95% completion, then seems to stop. The process shows as suspended, with a wait state of BACKUPIO. CPU, read, and write activity on the SPID also does not change, and the process stays in this state for hours, when normally a backup of this size should complete in about 20 minutes. This server has a single RAID-1 volume, thus the source database files and destination backup files are on the same volume. However, I cannot determine if another process is blocking the backup. The backup SPID cannot be killed, and the only way to terminate the log backup and clear the lock on the backup file is to cycle the SQL Server service. There was one event where the backup terminated completely, with an error that another process had locked the backup file, but no details about what that process was. Can anyone suggest a cause or diagnostic process to this situation?

  • ubuntu's average load never below "0.00 0.01 0.05"

    I have several ubuntu 12.04 VMs running on a ubuntu 12.04 KVM host. Those of the virtual machines that are totally idle with no services (except syslog and the other "small" standard stuff of a fresh installation) show a constant load of "0.00 0.01 0.05" in top/htop as average 1/5/15. When there are "real" applications running, the load averages behave perfectly normal but they never fall below the mentioned values. This makes sense to me and now I understand the importance of putting a highly-concurrent proxy in front of my app servers. What *nix tools and troubleshooting techniques would help me to recognize this problem if I hadn't had it explained to me?

  • Proper approach to debug PC startup problems (POST)

    My CPU was heating up to around 65 deg C and last time this had happened (about a year ago), I got thermal paste put between the CPU and heat sink and this managed to get it down to about 45 - 50 degrees. This time, I got some thermal paste and put it myself. However, my PC is not showing the POST display and not starting up. This is what happens LEDs light up HDDs spin Mouse is getting power All fans including the processor fan starts No display on monitor No diagnostic beep sounds (no sounds at all) What I have tried Removing everything including RAM, HDD, PCI cards, AGP card Boot up machine No changes from first state. What steps can I take to figure out where the problem lies? Note (might be important) When I removed the heat sink, the processor came out with it (it was stuck to it inspite of the processor latch on) Had to pry it separate with a screw-driver. Configuration Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz with HT (very old, I know) Original Intel Mobo with onboard sound and graphics (GB series) 2x512 Mb DDR-RAM 2 SATA disks (320 Gigs / 250 gigs) DVD Writer Creative Sound Card Network card Any help would be appreciated.
