  • Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

    - by MattDiPasquale
    I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? They may take their page down since it's not rendering correctly, so here's the source of the page just in case: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head id="ctl01_Head1" profile="New Jersey Credit Union • C# .Net 3.5 Asynchronous Socket Server Performance Problem

    - by iBrAaAa
    I'm developing an Asynchronous Game Server using .Net Socket Asynchronous Model( BeginAccept/EndAccept...etc.) The problem I'm facing is described like that: When I have only one client connected, the server response time is very fast but once a second client connects, the server response time increases too much. I've measured the time from a client sends a message to the server until it gets the reply in both cases. I found that the average time in case of one client is about 17ms and in case of 2 clients about 280ms!!! What I really see is that: When 2 clients are connected and only one of them is moving(i.e. requesting service from the server) it is equivalently equal to the case when only one client is connected(i.e. fast response). However, when the 2 clients move at the same time(i.e. requests service from the server at the same time) their motion becomes very slow (as if the server replies each one of them in order i.e. not simultaneously). Basically, what I am doing is that: When a client requests a permission for motion from the server and the server grants him the request, the server then broadcasts the new position of the client to all the players. So if two clients are moving in the same time, the server is eventually trying to broadcast to both clients the new position of each of them at the same time. EX: Client1 asks to go to position (2,2) Client2 asks to go to position (5,5) Server sends to each of Client1 & Client2 the same two messages: message1: "Client1 at (2,2)" message2: "Client2 at (5,5)" I believe that the problem comes from the fact that Socket class is thread safe according MSDN documentation http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.net.sockets.socket.aspx. (NOT SURE THAT IT IS THE PROBLEM) Below is the code for the server: /// /// This class is responsible for handling packet receiving and sending /// public class NetworkManager { /// /// An integer to hold the server port number to be used for the connections. Its default value is 5000. /// private readonly int port = 5000; /// /// hashtable contain all the clients connected to the server. /// key: player Id /// value: socket /// private readonly Hashtable connectedClients = new Hashtable(); /// /// An event to hold the thread to wait for a new client /// private readonly ManualResetEvent resetEvent = new ManualResetEvent(false); /// /// keeps track of the number of the connected clients /// private int clientCount; /// /// The socket of the server at which the clients connect /// private readonly Socket mainSocket = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, ProtocolType.Tcp); /// /// The socket exception that informs that a client is disconnected /// private const int ClientDisconnectedErrorCode = 10054; /// /// The event which fires when a client sends a position message /// public PositionUpdateMessageRecieved PositionUpdateMessageEvent { get; set; } /// /// keeps track of the number of the connected clients /// public int ClientCount { get { return clientCount; } } /// /// A getter for this class instance. /// /// only instance. public static NetworkManager NetworkManagerInstance { get { return networkManagerInstance; } } private NetworkManager() {} /// Starts the game server and holds this thread alive /// public void StartServer() { //Bind the mainSocket to the server IP address and port mainSocket.Bind(new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, port)); //The server starts to listen on the binded socket with max connection queue //1024 mainSocket.Listen(1024); //Start accepting clients asynchronously mainSocket.BeginAccept(OnClientConnected, null); //Wait until there is a client wants to connect resetEvent.WaitOne(); } /// /// Receives connections of new clients and fire the NewClientConnected event /// private void OnClientConnected(IAsyncResult asyncResult) { Interlocked.Increment(ref clientCount); ClientInfo newClient = new ClientInfo { WorkerSocket = mainSocket.EndAccept(asyncResult), PlayerId = clientCount }; //Add the new client to the hashtable and increment the number of clients connectedClients.Add(newClient.PlayerId, newClient); //fire the new client event informing that a new client is connected to the server if (NewClientEvent != null) { NewClientEvent(this, System.EventArgs.Empty); } break; } } } The events fired are handled in a different class, here are the event handling code for the PositionUpdateMessage (Other handlers are irrelevant): private readonly Hashtable onlinePlayers = new Hashtable(); /// /// Constructor that creates a new instance of the GameController class. /// private GameController() { //Start the server server = new Thread(networkManager.StartServer); server.Start(); //Create an event handler for the NewClientEvent of networkManager networkManager.PositionUpdateMessageEvent += OnPositionUpdateMessageReceived; Point locationRequested = e.PositionUpdatePacket.Position; ((PlayerData)onlinePlayers[e.PositionUpdatePacket.PlayerId]).Position = locationRequested; // Broadcast the new position networkManager.BroadcastMessage(new PositionUpdatePacket { Position = locationRequested, PlayerId = e.PositionUpdatePacket.PlayerId }); • Benchmark Linq2SQL, Subsonic2, Subsonic3 - Any other ideas to make them faster ?

    - by Aristos
    I am working with Subsonic 2 more than 3 years now... After Linq appears and then Subsonic 3, I start thinking about moving to the new Linq futures that are connected to sql. I must say that I start move and port my subsonic 2 with SubSonic 3, and very soon I discover that the speed was so slow thats I didn't believe it - and starts all that tests. Then I test Linq2Sql and see also a delay - compare it with Subsonic 2. My question here is, especial for the linq2sql, and the up-coming dotnet version 4, what else can I do to speed it up ? What else on linq2sql settings, or classes, not on this code that I have used for my messures I place here the project that I make the tests, also the screen shots of the results. How I make the tests - and the accurate of my measures. I use only for my question Google chrome, because its difficult for me to show here a lot of other measures that I have done with more complex programs. This is the most simple one, I just measure the Data Read. How can I prove that. I make a simple Thread.Sleep(10 seconds) and see if I see that 10 seconds on Google Chrome Measure, and yes I see it. here are more test with this Sleep thead to see whats actually Chrome gives. 10 seconds delay 100 ms delay Zero delay There is only a small 15ms thats get on messure, is so small compare it with the rest of my tests that I do not care about. So what I measure I measure just the data read via each method - did not count the data or database delay, or any disk read or anything like that. Later on the image with the result I show that no disk activity exist on the measures See this image to see what really I measure and if this is correct Why I chose this kind of test Its simple, it's real, and it's near my real problem that I found the delay of subsonic 3 in real program with real data. Now lets tests the dals Start by see this image I have 4-5 calls on every method, the one after the other. The results are. For a loop of 100 times, ask for 5 Rows, one not exist, approximatively.. Simple adonet:81ms SubSonic 2 :210ms linq2sql :1.70sec linq2sql using CompiledQuery.Compile :239ms Subsonic 3 :15.00sec (wow - extreme slow) The project http://www.planethost.gr/DalSpeedTests.rar Can any one confirm this benchmark, or make any optimizations to help me out ? Other tests Some one publish here this link http://ormbattle.net/ (and then remove it - don not know why) In this page you can find a really useful advanced tests for all, except subsonic 2 and subsonic 3 that I have here ! Optimizing What I really ask here is if some one can now any trick how to optimize the DALs, not by changing the test code, but by changing the code and the settings on each dal. For example... Optimizing Linq2SQL I start search how to optimize Linq2sql and found this article, and maybe more exist. Finally I make the tricks from that page to run, and optimize the code using them all. The speed was near 1.50sec from 1.70.... big improvement, but still slow. Then I found a different way - same idea article, and wow ! the speed is blow up. Using this trick with CompiledQuery.Compile, the time from 1.5sec is now 239ms. Here is the code for the precompiled... Func<DataClassesDataContext, int, IQueryable<Product>> compiledQuery = CompiledQuery.Compile((DataClassesDataContext meta, int IdToFind) => (from myData in meta.Products where myData.ProductID.Equals(IdToFind) select myData)); StringBuilder Test = new StringBuilder(); int[] MiaSeira = { 5, 6, 10, 100, 7 }; using (DataClassesDataContext context = new DataClassesDataContext()) { context.ObjectTrackingEnabled = false; for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { foreach (int EnaID in MiaSeira) { var oFindThat2P = compiledQuery(context, EnaID); foreach (Product One in oFindThat2P) { Test.Append("<br />"); Test.Append(One.ProductName); } } } } Optimizing SubSonic 3 and problems I make many performance profiling, and start change the one after the other and the speed is better but still too slow. I post them on subsonic group but they ignore the problem, they say that everything is fast... Here is some capture of my profiling and delay points inside subsonic source code I have end up that subsonic3 make more call on the structure of the database rather than on data itself. Needs to reconsider the hole way of asking for data, and follow the subsonic2 idea if this is possible. Try to make precompile to subsonic 3 like I did in linq2Sql but fail for the moment... Optimizing SubSonic 2 After I discover that subsonic 3 is extreme slow, I start my checks on subsonic 2 - that I have never done before believing that is fast. (and it is) So its come up with some points that can be faster. For example there are many loops like this ones that actually is slow because of string manipulation and compares inside the loop. I must say to you that this code called million of times ! on a period of few minutes ! of data asking from the program. On small amount of tables and small fields maybe this is not a big think for some people, but on large amount of tables, the delay is even more. So I decide and optimize the subsonic 2 by my self, by replacing the string compares, with number compares! Simple. I do that almost on every point that profiler say that is slow. I change also all small points that can be even a little faster, and disable some not so used thinks. The results, 5% faster on NorthWind database, near 20% faster on my database with 250 tables. That is count with 500ms less in 10 seconds process on northwind, 100ms faster on my database on 500ms process time. I do not have captures to show you for that because I have made them with different code, different time, and track them down on paper. Anyway this is my story and my question on all that, what else do you know to make them even faster... For this measures I have use Subsonic 2.2 optimized by me, Subsonic 3.0.0.3 a little optimized by me, and Dot.Net 3.5

  • trying to divide complex numbers, division by zero

    - by user553619
    I'm trying the program below to divide complex numbers, it works for complex numbers but not when the denominator is real (i.e, the complex part is zero). Division by zero occurs in this line ratio = b->r / b->i ;, when the complex part b->i is zero (in the case of a real denominator). How do I get around this? and why did the programmer do this, instead of the more straightforward rule for complex division The wikipedia rule seems to be better, and no division by zero error would occur here. Did I miss something? Why did the programmer not use the wikipedia formula?? Thanks /*! @file dcomplex.c * \brief Common arithmetic for complex type * * <pre> * -- SuperLU routine (version 2.0) -- * Univ. of California Berkeley, Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, * and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. * November 15, 1997 * * This file defines common arithmetic operations for complex type. * </pre> */ #include <math.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdio.h> #include "slu_dcomplex.h" /*! \brief Complex Division c = a/b */ void z_div(doublecomplex *c, doublecomplex *a, doublecomplex *b) { double ratio, den; double abr, abi, cr, ci; if( (abr = b->r) < 0.) abr = - abr; if( (abi = b->i) < 0.) abi = - abi; if( abr <= abi ) { if (abi == 0) { fprintf(stderr, "z_div.c: division by zero\n"); exit(-1); } ratio = b->r / b->i ; den = b->i * (1 + ratio*ratio); cr = (a->r*ratio + a->i) / den; ci = (a->i*ratio - a->r) / den; } else { ratio = b->i / b->r ; den = b->r * (1 + ratio*ratio); cr = (a->r + a->i*ratio) / den; ci = (a->i - a->r*ratio) / den; } c->r = cr; c->i = ci; }

  • Creating thousands of records in Rails

    - by willCosgrove
    Let me set the stage: My application deals with gift cards. When we create cards they have to have a unique string that the user can use to redeem it with. So when someone orders our gift cards, like a retailer, we need to make a lot of new card objects and store them in the DB. With that in mind, I'm trying to see how quickly I can have my application generate 100,000 Cards. Database expert, I am not, so I need someone to explain this little phenomena: When I create 1000 Cards, it takes 5 seconds. When I create 100,000 cards it should take 500 seconds right? Now I know what you're wanting to see, the card creation method I'm using, because the first assumption would be that it's getting slower because it's checking the uniqueness of a bunch of cards, more as it goes along. But I can show you my rake task desc "Creates cards for a retailer" task :order_cards, [:number_of_cards, :value, :retailer_name] => :environment do |t, args| t = Time.now puts "Searching for retailer" @retailer = Retailer.find_by_name(args[:retailer_name]) puts "Retailer found" puts "Generating codes" value = args[:value].to_i number_of_cards = args[:number_of_cards].to_i codes = [] top_off_codes(codes, number_of_cards) while codes != codes.uniq codes.uniq! top_off_codes(codes, number_of_cards) end stored_codes = Card.all.collect do |c| c.code end while codes != (codes - stored_codes) codes -= stored_codes top_off_codes(codes, number_of_cards) end puts "Codes are unique and generated" puts "Creating bundle" @bundle = @retailer.bundles.create!(:value => value) puts "Bundle created" puts "Creating cards" @bundle.transaction do codes.each do |code| @bundle.cards.create!(:code => code) end end puts "Cards generated in #{Time.now - t}s" end def top_off_codes(codes, intended_number) (intended_number - codes.size).times do codes << ReadableRandom.get(CODE_LENGTH) end end I'm using a gem called readable_random for the unique code. So if you read through all of that code, you'll see that it does all of it's uniqueness testing before it ever starts creating cards. It also writes status updates to the screen while it's running, and it always sits for a while at creating. Meanwhile it flies through the uniqueness tests. So my question to the stackoverflow community is: Why is my database slowing down as I add more cards? Why is this not a linear function in regards to time per card? I'm sure the answer is simple and I'm just a moron who knows nothing about data storage. And if anyone has any suggestions, how would you optimize this method, and how fast do you think you could get it to create 100,000 cards? (When I plotted out my times on a graph and did a quick curve fit to get my line formula, I calculated how long it would take to create 100,000 cards with my current code and it says 5.5 hours. That maybe completely wrong, I'm not sure. But if it stays on the line I curve fitted, it would be right around there.)

  • Scipy Negative Distance? What?

    - by disappearedng
    I have a input file which are all floating point numbers to 4 decimal place. i.e. 13359 0.0000 0.0000 0.0001 0.0001 0.0002` 0.0003 0.0007 ... (the first is the id). My class uses the loadVectorsFromFile method which multiplies it by 10000 and then int() these numbers. On top of that, I also loop through each vector to ensure that there are no negative values inside. However, when I perform _hclustering, I am continually seeing the error, "Linkage Z contains negative values". I seriously think this is a bug because: I checked my values, the values are no where small enough or big enough to approach the limits of the floating point numbers and the formula that I used to derive the values in the file uses absolute value (my input is DEFINITELY right). Can someone enligten me as to why I am seeing this weird error? • How to interpolate hue values in HSV colour space?

    - by nick
    Hi, I'm trying to interpolate between two colours in HSV colour space to produce a smooth colour gradient. I'm using a linear interpolation, eg: h = (1 - p) * h1 + p * h2 s = (1 - p) * s1 + p * s2 v = (1 - p) * v1 + p * v2 (where p is the percentage, and h1, h2, s1, s2, v1, v2 are the hue, saturation and value components of the two colours) This produces a good result for s and v but not for h. As the hue component is an angle, the calculation needs to work out the shortest distance between h1 and h2 and then do the interpolation in the right direction (either clockwise or anti-clockwise). What formula or algorithm should I use? EDIT: By following Jack's suggestions I modified my JavaScript gradient function and it works well. For anyone interested, here's what I ended up with: // create gradient from yellow to red to black with 100 steps var gradient = hsbGradient(100, [{h:0.14, s:0.5, b:1}, {h:0, s:1, b:1}, {h:0, s:1, b:0}]); function hsbGradient(steps, colours) { var parts = colours.length - 1; var gradient = new Array(steps); var gradientIndex = 0; var partSteps = Math.floor(steps / parts); var remainder = steps - (partSteps * parts); for (var col = 0; col < parts; col++) { // get colours var c1 = colours[col], c2 = colours[col + 1]; // determine clockwise and counter-clockwise distance between hues var distCCW = (c1.h >= c2.h) ? c1.h - c2.h : 1 + c1.h - c2.h; distCW = (c1.h >= c2.h) ? 1 + c2.h - c1.h : c2.h - c1.h; // ensure we get the right number of steps by adding remainder to final part if (col == parts - 1) partSteps += remainder; // make gradient for this part for (var step = 0; step < partSteps; step ++) { var p = step / partSteps; // interpolate h var h = (distCW <= distCCW) ? c1.h + (distCW * p) : c1.h - (distCCW * p); if (h < 0) h = 1 + h; if (h > 1) h = h - 1; // interpolate s, b var s = (1 - p) * c1.s + p * c2.s; var b = (1 - p) * c1.b + p * c2.b; // add to gradient array gradient[gradientIndex] = {h:h, s:s, b:b}; gradientIndex ++; } } return gradient; }

  • Simple Grouping With TableSorter Plugin

    - by HurnsMobile
    Im playing around with the Tablesorter plug-in for jQuery and was trying to get a very simple grouping functionality added into it. Using the follow html/js works great until you click sort again and reverse the order. The headers get moved to the bottom of the group when this happens. The following is my (admitedly hacky) attempt at it. Does anyone have any ideas? <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <title>Table Manipulation Test</title> <link type="text/css" href="css/ui-lightness/jquery-ui-1.8.1.custom.css" rel="stylesheet" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="tablesorter/themes/green/style.css" type="text/css"/> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery-ui-1.8.1.custom.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="tablesorter/jquery.tablesorter.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $("#test_table").tablesorter({ sortForce: [[3,0]] }); $(".group_details").hide(); $(".group_header").click(function(){ var group = $(this).attr("group"); var $expander = $(this).children("td.expanderguy") if ($("." + group + ":visible").length){ $("." + group + "").fadeOut('fast'); $expander.html("<img src='icons/plus.gif'>"); } else{ $("." + group + "").fadeIn('fast'); $expander.html("<img src='icons/minus.gif'>"); } }); } ); </script> <style type="text/css"> .group_header td{ background-color: #888888; !important } </style> </head> <body> <table id="test_table" class="tablesorter"> <thead> <tr><th>First Name</th><th>Last Name</th><th>Email</th><th>Due Date</th><th>Amount Due</th></tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr class="group_header" group="group1"><td class="expanderguy"><img src="icons/plus.gif"></td><td></td><td></td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td></td></tr> <tr class="group_details group1"><td>Flavian</td><td>Wenceslas</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td>$100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group1"><td>Gordian</td><td>Ives</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td>$1700</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group1"><td>Saladin</td><td>Tarquin</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td>$1700</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group1"><td>Urban</td><td>Cyprian</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td>$1500</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group1"><td>Sargon</td><td>Swithun</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td>$1100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group1"><td>Pompey</td><td>Ladislas</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td>$300</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group1"><td>Attila</td><td>Hiawatha</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Monday, June 7</td><td>$200</td></tr> <tr class="group_header" group="group2"><td class="expanderguy"><img src="icons/plus.gif"></td><td></td><td></td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td></td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Bruce</td><td>Fenton</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$1700</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Wade</td><td>Sequoia</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$1400</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Eddie</td><td>Jerold</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$1100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Lynn</td><td>Lucan</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$1200</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Taegan</td><td>Tadg</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Clyde</td><td>Reed</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$6100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Alaois</td><td>Art</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$2100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group2"><td>Gilbert</td><td>Patsy</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Tuesday, June 8</td><td>$1500</td></tr> <tr class="group_header" group="group3"><td class="expanderguy"><img src="icons/plus.gif"></td><td></td><td></td><td>Wednesday, June 9</td><td></td></tr> <tr class="group_details group3" ><td>Clem</td><td>Eben</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Wednesday, June 9</td><td>$2100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group3" ><td>Elijah</td><td>Julyan</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Wednesday, June 9</td><td>$2100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group3" ><td>Marvyn</td><td>Damian</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Wednesday, June 9</td><td>$1100</td></tr> <tr class="group_details group3" ><td>Sawyer</td><td>Ryker</td><td>[email protected]</td><td>Wednesday, June 9</td><td>$500</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </body>

  • JQuery Hover li Show div which sits outside li structure

    - by Dave_Stott
    Hi everyone I'm currently trying to create a "mega" dropout menu using JQuery but have encountered an issue I'm yet to be able to resolve. At the moment I have the following HTML structure: <div id="TopNav" class="grid_16"> <ul class="cmsListMenuUL level0" id="TopNavMenu"> <li class="cmsListMenuLIcmsListMenuLI highlightedLI" id="TopNavMenu_Home"><a href="/"> <span class="text">Home</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLIfirst" id="TopNavMenu_0_1"><a href="/Key-Sectors.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">Key Sectors</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_2"><a href="/Global-Brands.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">Global Brands</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_3"><a href="/News---Features.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">News &amp; Features</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_4"><a href="/Videos.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">Videos</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_5"><a href="/Events.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">Events</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_6"><a href="/Key-Cities.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">Key Cities</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_7"><a href="/Doing-Business-in-Yorkshire.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"><span class="text">Doing Business in Yorkshire</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_8"><a href="/How-We-Can-Help.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">How We Can Help</span></a></li> <li class="cmsListMenuLI" id="TopNavMenu_0_9"><a href="/Contact-Us.aspx" class="cmsListMenuLink"> <span class="text">Contact Us</span></a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="sectorsDropped"> <div class="floatLeft leftColumn"> <div class="parentItem" style="border-color: #0064BE;"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Advanced-Engineering---Materials.aspx" class="parentItemContent"> Advanced Engineering &amp; Materials</a><div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Advanced-Engineering---Materials/Nuclear.aspx">- Nuclear</a></div> <div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Advanced-Engineering---Materials/Logistics---Infrastructure.aspx"> - Logistics &amp; Infrastructure</a></div> </div> <div class="parentItem" style="border-color: #FFB611;"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Chemicals.aspx" class="parentItemContent">Chemicals</a></div> <div class="parentItem" style="border-color: #B7CC0B;"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Environmental-Technologies.aspx" class="parentItemContent">Environmental Technologies</a><div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Environmental-Technologies/Offshore-Wind.aspx">- Offshore Wind</a></div> <div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Environmental-Technologies/Carbon-Capture---Storage.aspx">- Carbon Capture &amp; Storage</a></div> <div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Environmental-Technologies/Tidal-Power.aspx">- Tidal Power</a></div> <div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Environmental-Technologies/Biomass.aspx">- Biomass</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="floatLeft rightColumn"> <div class="parentItem" style="border-color: #AC26AA;"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Digital---New-Media.aspx" class="parentItemContent">Digital &amp; New Media</a></div> <div class="parentItem" style="border-color: #e1477e;"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Food---Drink.aspx" class="parentItemContent">Food &amp; Drink</a></div> <div class="parentItem" style="border-color: #00c5b5;"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Healthcare-Technologies.aspx" class="parentItemContent">Healthcare Technologies</a><div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Healthcare-Technologies/Biotechnology.aspx">- Biotechnology</a></div> <div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Healthcare-Technologies/Pharmaceuticals.aspx">- Pharmaceuticals</a></div> <div class="childItem"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Healthcare-Technologies/Medical-Devices.aspx">- Medical Devices</a></div> </div> <div class="parentItem" style="border-color: #AC1A2F;"> <a href="/Key-Sectors/Financial---Professional.aspx" class="parentItemContent">Financial &amp; Professional</a></div> </div> </div> In normal circumstances the div containing the "mega" menu options would sit inside the li item that fires the show/hide but this is currently not possible as the ul list of navigation links is rendered using a 3rd party piece of software which does not provide an equivalent of an OnItemDataBound event for me to be able to inject the div into the item Does anyone know of a way, using JQuery, of showing the div but maintain the display of the div as the mouse focus leaves the li that originaly displayed the div and actually enters the div? I'm currently using the following JQuery which displays the div correctly but as the mouse focus enters the div the div then disappears as the mouse focus from the li has now moved: $(document).ready(function() { function addMega(){ $(".sectorsDropped").toggle("fast"); } function removeMega(){ $(".sectorsDropped").toggle("fast"); } var megaConfig = { interval: 500, sensitivity: 4, over: addMega, timeout: 500, out: removeMega }; $("#TopNavMenu_0_1").hoverIntent(megaConfig) }); Thanks Dave

  • nhibernate subclass in code

    - by Antonio Nakic Alfirevic
    I would like to set up table-per-classhierarchy inheritance in nhibernate thru code. Everything else is set in XML mapping files except the subclasses. If i up the subclasses in xml all is well, but not from code. This is the code i use - my concrete subclass never gets created:( //the call NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration config = new NHibernate.Cfg.Configuration(); SetSubclass(config, typeof(TAction), typeof(tActionSub1), "Procedure"); //the method public static void SetSubclass(Configuration configuration, Type baseClass, Type subClass, string discriminatorValue) { PersistentClass persBaseClass = configuration.ClassMappings.Where(cm => cm.MappedClass == baseClass).Single(); SingleTableSubclass persSubClass = new SingleTableSubclass(persBaseClass); persSubClass.ClassName = subClass.AssemblyQualifiedName; persSubClass.DiscriminatorValue = discriminatorValue; persSubClass.EntityPersisterClass = typeof(SingleTableEntityPersister); persSubClass.ProxyInterfaceName = (subClass).AssemblyQualifiedName; persSubClass.NodeName = subClass.Name; persSubClass.EntityName = subClass.FullName; persBaseClass.AddSubclass(persSubClass); } the Xml mapping looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" namespace="Riz.Pcm.Domain.BusinessObjects" assembly="Riz.Pcm.Domain"> <class name="Riz.Pcm.Domain.BusinessObjects.TAction, Riz.Pcm.Domain" table="dbo.tAction" lazy="true"> <id name="Id" column="ID"> <generator class="guid" /> </id> <discriminator type="String" formula="(select jt.Name from TJobType jt where jt.Id=JobTypeId)" insert="true" force="false"/> <many-to-one name="Session" column="SessionID" class="TSession" /> <property name="Order" column="Order1" /> <property name="ProcessStart" column="ProcessStart" /> <property name="ProcessEnd" column="ProcessEnd" /> <property name="Status" column="Status" /> <many-to-one name="JobType" column="JobTypeID" class="TJobType" /> <many-to-one name="Unit" column="UnitID" class="TUnit" /> <bag name="TActionProperties" lazy="true" cascade="all-delete-orphan" inverse="true" > <key column="ActionID"></key> <one-to-many class="TActionProperty"></one-to-many> </bag> <!--<subclass name="Riz.Pcm.Domain.tActionSub" discriminator-value="ZPower"></subclass>--> </class> </hibernate-mapping> What am I doing wrong?   • Help with a logic problem

    - by Stradigos
    I'm having a great deal of difficulty trying to figure out the logic behind this problem. I have developed everything else, but I really could use some help, any sort of help, on the part I'm stuck on. Back story: *A group of actors waits in a circle. They "count off" by various amounts. The last few to audition are thought to have the best chance of getting the parts and becoming stars. Instead of actors having names, they are identified by numbers. The "Audition Order" in the table tells, reading left-to-right, the "names" of the actors who will be auditioned in the order they will perform.* Sample output: etc, all the way up to 10. What I have so far: using System; using System.Collections; using System.Text; namespace The_Last_Survivor { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { //Declare Variables int NumOfActors = 0; System.DateTime dt = System.DateTime.Now; int interval = 3; ArrayList Ring = new ArrayList(10); //Header Console.Out.WriteLine("Actors\tNumber\tOrder"); //Add Actors for (int x = 1; x < 11; x++) { NumOfActors++; Ring.Insert((x - 1), new Actor(x)); foreach (Actor i in Ring) { Console.Out.WriteLine("{0}\t{1}\t{2}", NumOfActors, i, i.Order(interval, x)); } Console.Out.WriteLine("\n"); } Console.In.Read(); } public class Actor { //Variables protected int Number; //Constructor public Actor(int num) { Number = num; } //Order in circle public string Order(int inter, int num) { //Variable string result = ""; ArrayList myArray = new ArrayList(num); //Filling Array for (int i = 0; i < num; i++) myArray.Add(i + 1); //Formula foreach (int element in myArray) { if (element == inter) { result += String.Format(" {0}", element); myArray.RemoveAt(element); } } return result; } //String override public override string ToString() { return String.Format("{0}", Number); } } } } The part I'm stuck on is getting some math going that does this: Can anyone offer some guidance and/or sample code?

  • Writing csv files with python with exact formatting parameters

    - by Ben Harrison
    I'm having trouble with processing some csv data files for a project. The project's programmer has moved onto greener pastures, and now I'm trying to finish the data analysis up (I did/do the statistical analysis.) The programmer suggested using python/csv reader to help break down the files, which I've had some success with, but not in a way I can use. This code is a little different from what I was trying before. I am essentially attempting to create an array. In the raw data format, the first 7 rows contain no data, and then each column contains 50 experiments, each with 4000 rows, for 200000 some rows total. What I want to do is take each column, and make it an individual csv file, with each experiment in its own column. So it would be an array of 50 columns and 4000 rows for each data type. The code here does break down the correct values, I think the logic is okay, but it is breaking down the opposite of how I want it. I want the separators without quotes (the commas and spaces) and I want the element values in quotes. Right now it is doing just the opposite for both, element values with no quotes, and the separators in quotes. I've spent several hours trying to figure out how to do this to no avail, import csv ifile = open('00_follow_maverick.csv') epistemicfile = open('00_follower_maverick_EP.csv', 'w') reader = csv.reader(ifile) colnum = 0 rownum = 0 y = 0 z = 8 for column in reader: rownum = 4000 * y + z for element in column: writer = csv.writer(epistemicfile) if y <= 50: y = y + 1 writer.writerow([element]) writer.writerow(',') rownum = x * y + z if y > 50: y = 0 z = z + 1 writer.writerow(' ') rownum = x * y + z if z >= 4008: break What is going on: I am taking each row in the raw data file in iterations of 4000, so that I can separate them with commas for the 50 experiments. When y, the experiment indicator here, reaches 50, it resets back to experiment 0, and adds 1 to z, which tells it which row to look at, by the formula of 4000 * y + z. When it completes the rows for all 50 experiments, it is finished. The problem here is that I don't know how to get python to write the actual values in quotes, and my separators outside of quotes. Any help will be most appreciated. Apologies if this seems a stupid question, I have no programming experience, this is my first attempt ever. Thank you.

  • R glm standard error estimate differences to SAS PROC GENMOD

    - by Michelle
    I am converting a SAS PROC GENMOD example into R, using glm in R. The SAS code was: proc genmod data=data0 namelen=30; model boxcoxy=boxcoxxy ~ AGEGRP4 + AGEGRP5 + AGEGRP6 + AGEGRP7 + AGEGRP8 + RACE1 + RACE3 + WEEKEND + SEQ/dist=normal; FREQ REPLICATE_VAR; run; My R code is: parmsg2 <- glm(boxcoxxy ~ AGEGRP4 + AGEGRP5 + AGEGRP6 + AGEGRP7 + AGEGRP8 + RACE1 + RACE3 + WEEKEND + SEQ , data=data0, family=gaussian, weights = REPLICATE_VAR) When I use summary(parmsg2) I get the same coefficient estimates as in SAS, but my standard errors are wildly different. The summary output from SAS is: Name df Estimate StdErr LowerWaldCL UpperWaldCL ChiSq ProbChiSq Intercept 1 6.5007436 .00078884 6.4991975 6.5022897 67911982 0 agegrp4 1 .64607262 .00105425 .64400633 .64813891 375556.79 0 agegrp5 1 .4191395 .00089722 .41738099 .42089802 218233.76 0 agegrp6 1 -.22518765 .00083118 -.22681672 -.22355857 73401.113 0 agegrp7 1 -1.7445189 .00087569 -1.7462352 -1.7428026 3968762.2 0 agegrp8 1 -2.2908855 .00109766 -2.2930369 -2.2887342 4355849.4 0 race1 1 -.13454883 .00080672 -.13612997 -.13296769 27817.29 0 race3 1 -.20607036 .00070966 -.20746127 -.20467944 84319.131 0 weekend 1 .0327884 .00044731 .0319117 .03366511 5373.1931 0 seq2 1 -.47509583 .00047337 -.47602363 -.47416804 1007291.3 0 Scale 1 2.9328613 .00015586 2.9325559 2.9331668 -127 The summary output from R is: Coefficients: Estimate Std. I have found a formula to calculate the Wald confidence intervals in R, but this is pointless given the difference in the standard errors, as I will not get the same results. Apparently SAS uses a ridge-stabilized Newton-Raphson algorithm for its estimates, which are ML. The information I read about the glm function in R is that the results should be equivalent to ML. What can I do to change my estimation procedure in R so that I get the equivalent coefficents and standard error estimates that were produced in SAS? To update, thanks to Spacedman's answer, I used weights because the data are from individuals in a dietary survey, and REPLICATE_VAR is a balanced repeated replication weight, that is an integer (and quite large, in the order of 1000s or 10000s). The website that describes the weight is here. I don't know why the FREQ rather than the WEIGHT command was used in SAS. I will now test by expanding the number of observations using REPLICATE_VAR and rerunning the analysis.

  • parallelizing code using openmp

    - by anubhav
    Hi, The function below contains nested for loops. There are 3 of them. I have given the whole function below for easy understanding. I want to parallelize the code in the innermost for loop as it takes maximum CPU time. Then i can think about outer 2 for loops. I can see dependencies and internal inline functions in the innermost for loop . Can the innermost for loop be rewritten to enable parallelization using openmp pragmas. Please tell how. • .Net 3.5 Asynchronous Socket Server Performance Problem

/// key: player Id /// value: socket /// private readonly Hashtable connectedClients = new Hashtable(); /// /// An event to hold the thread to wait for a new client /// private readonly ManualResetEvent resetEvent = new ManualResetEvent(false); /// /// keeps track of the number of the connected clients /// private int clientCount; } } /// /// A getter for this class instance. /// /// only instance. public static NetworkManager NetworkManagerInstance { get { return networkManagerInstance; } } private NetworkManager() {} /// Starts the game server and holds this thread alive /// public void StartServer() { //Bind the mainSocket to the server IP address and port mainSocket.Bind(new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, port)); } /// /// Receives connections of new clients and fire the NewClientConnected event /// private void OnClientConnected(IAsyncResult asyncResult) { Interlocked.Increment(ref clientCount); ClientInfo newClient = new ClientInfo { WorkerSocket = mainSocket.EndAccept(asyncResult), PlayerId = clientCount }; //Add the new client to the hashtable and increment the number of clients connectedClients.Add(newClient.PlayerId, newClient); //fire the new client event informing that a new client is connected to the server if (NewClientEvent != null) { NewClientEvent(this, System.EventArgs.Empty); • Why is the W3C box model considered better?

    - by Mel
    Why do most developers consider the W3C box-model to be better than the box-model used by Internet Explorer? I know it's very frustrating developing pages that look the way you want them on Internet Explorer, but I find the W3C box-model to be counter-intuitive. For example, if margins, padding, and border were factored into the width, I could assign fixed width values for all my columns without having to worry about how many columns I have and what changes I make to my padding and margins. Under W3C box model I have to worry about how many columns I have, and develop something akin to a mathematical formula to calculate my values. Changing them would nightmarish, especially for complex layouts. My novice opinion is that it's more restrictive. Consider this small frame-work I wrote: #content { margin:0 auto 30px auto; padding:0 30px 30px 30px; width:900px; } #content .column { float:left; margin:0 20px 20px 20px; } #content .first { margin-left:0; } #content .last { margin-right:0; } .width_1-4 { width:195px; } .width_1-3 { width:273px; } .width_1-2 { width:430px; } .width_3-4 { width:645px; } .width_1-1 { width:900px; } These values I have assigned here will falter unless there are three columns, and thus the margins at 0(first)+20+20+20+20+0(last). It would be a disaster if I wanted to add padding to my columns too, as my entire setup would have to be re calibrated. Now imagine if column width incorporated all the other elements, all I would need to do is change one associated value, and I have my layout. I'm less criticizing it and more hoping to understand why it's better, or why I'm finding it more difficult. Am I doing this whole thing wrong? I don't know very much about this topic, but it seems counter intuitive to use W3C's box-model. Some advice would be really appreciated. Thanks

  • shipping and handling fee calculation

    - by Newb
    Here is the question: Many companies normally charge a shipping and handling fee for purchases. Create a Web page that allows a user to enter a purchase price into a text box - include a JavaScript function that calculates shipping and handling. Add functionality to the script that adds a minimum shipping and handling fee of $1.50 for any purchase that is less than or equal to $25.00. For any orders over $25.00, add 10% to the total purchase price for shipping and handling, but do not include the $1.50 minimum shipping and handling fee. After you determine the total cost of the order (purchase plus shipping and handling), display it in an alert dialog box. I am beginner at JavaScript and struggling to get my code to work. It does display an alert box with the value entered by the user but doesn't add anything. Although, I don't know why the formula doesn't work. Please help. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>Calculating Shipping & Handling</title> <script type="text/javascript"> /* <![CDATA[ */ var price=[]; var shipping=[]; var total=price+shipping; function calculateShipping(){ if (price <= 25){ shipping = (price + 1.5); } else { shipping = (price * 10 / 100); } window.alert("The purchase price with shipping is " + document.calculate.ent.value); } /* ]]> */ </script> </head> <body> <form name ="calculate" action="" > <p>Enter Purchase Price</p> <input type="text" name="ent" > <input type="button" name="button" value="Submit" onClick="calculateShipping()" /> </form> </body> </html>

  • Loading the last related record instantly for multiple parent records using Entity framework

    - by Guillaume Schuermans
    Does anyone know a good approach using Entity Framework for the problem described below? I am trying for our next release to come up with a performant way to show the placed orders for the logged on customer. Of course paging is always a good technique to use when a lot of data is available I would like to see an answer without any paging techniques. Here's the story: a customer places an order which gets an orderstatus = PENDING. Depending on some strategy we move that order up the chain in order to get it APPROVED. Every change of status is logged so we can see a trace for statusses and maybe even an extra line of comment per status which can provide some extra valuable information to whoever sees this order in an interface. So an Order is linked to a Customer. One order can have multiple orderstatusses stored in OrderStatusHistory. In my testscenario I am using a customer which has 100+ Orders each with about 5 records in the OrderStatusHistory-table. I would for now like to see all orders in one page not using paging where for each Order I show the last relevant Status and the extra comment (if there is any for this last status; both fields coming from OrderStatusHistory; the record with the highest Id for the given OrderId). There are multiple scenarios I have tried, but I would like to see any potential other solutions or comments on the things I have already tried. Trying to do Include() when getting Orders but this still results in multiple queries launched on the database. Each order triggers an extra query to the database to get all orderstatusses in the history table. So all statusses are queried here instead of just returning the last relevant one, plus 100 extra queries are launched for 100 orders. You can imagine the problem when there are 100000+ orders in the database. Having 2 computed columns on the database: LastStatus, LastStatusInformation and a regular Linq-Query which gets those columns which are available through the Entity-model. The problem with this approach is the fact that those computed columns are determined using a scalar function which can not be changed without removing the formula from the computed column, etc... In the end I am very familiar with SQL and Stored procedures, but since the rest of the data-layer uses Entity Framework I would like to stick to it as long as possible, even though I have my doubts about performance. Using the SQL approach I would write something like this: WITH cte (RN, OrderId, [Status], Information) AS ( SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY OrderId ORDER BY Id DESC), OrderId, [Status], Information FROM OrderStatus ) SELECT o.Id, cte.[Status], cte.Information AS StatusInformation, o.* FROM [Order] o INNER JOIN cte ON o.Id = cte.OrderId AND cte.RN = 1 WHERE CustomerId = @CustomerId ORDER BY 1 DESC; which returns all orders for the customer with the statusinformation provided by the Common Table Expression. Does anyone know a good approach using Entity Framework?

  • How to get colliding effect or bouncy when ball hits the track.

    - by Chandan Shetty SP
    I am using below formula to move the ball circular, where accelX and accelY are the values from accelerometer, it is working fine. But the problem in this code is mRadius (I fixed its value to 50), i need to change mRadius according to accelerometer values and also i need bouncing effect when it touches the track. Currently i am developing code by assuming only one ball is on the board. float degrees = -atan2(accelX, accelY) * 180 / 3.14159; int x = cCentrePoint.x + mRadius * cos(degreesToRadians(degrees)); int y = cCentrePoint.y + mRadius * sin(degreesToRadians(degrees)); Here is the snap of the game i want to develop: Updated: I am sending the updated code... mRadius = 5; mRange = NSMakeRange(0,60); -(void) updateBall: (UIAccelerationValue) accelX withY:(UIAccelerationValue)accelY { float degrees = -atan2(accelX, accelY) * 180 / 3.14159; int x = cCentrePoint.x + mRadius * cos(degreesToRadians(degrees)); int y = cCentrePoint.y + mRadius * sin(degreesToRadians(degrees)); //self.targetRect is rect of ball Object self.targetRect = CGRectMake(newX, newY, 8, 9); self.currentRect = self.targetRect; //http://books.google.co.in/books?id=WV9glgdrrrUC&pg=PA455#v=onepage&q=&f=false static NSDate *lastDrawTime; if(lastDrawTime!=nil) { NSTimeInterval secondsSinceLastDraw = -([lastDrawTime timeIntervalSinceNow]); ballXVelocity = ballXVelocity + (accelX * secondsSinceLastDraw) * [self isTouchedTrack:mRadius andRange:mRange]; ballYVelocity = ballYVelocity + -(accelY * secondsSinceLastDraw) * [self isTouchedTrack:mRadius andRange:mRange]; distXTravelled = distXTravelled + secondsSinceLastDraw * ballXVelocity * 50; distYTravelled = distYTravelled + secondsSinceLastDraw * ballYVelocity * 50; CGRect temp = self.targetRect; temp.origin.x += distXTravelled; temp.origin.y += distYTravelled; int radius = (temp.origin.x - cCentrePoint.x) / cos(degreesToRadians(degrees)); if( !NSLocationInRange(abs(radius),mRange)) { //Colided with the tracks...Need a better logic here ballXVelocity = -ballXVelocity; } else { // Need a better logic here self.targetRect = temp; } //NSLog(@"angle = %f",degrees); } [lastDrawTime release]; lastDrawTime = [ [NSDate alloc] init]; } In the above code i have initialized mRadius and mRange(indicate track) to some constant for testing, i am not getting the moving of the ball as i expected( bouncing effect when Collided with track ) with respect to accelerometer. Help me to recognize where i went wrong or send some code snippets or links which does the similar job. I am searching for better logic than my code, if you found share with me.

  • Numpy zero rank array indexing/broadcasting

    - by Lemming
    I'm trying to write a function that supports broadcasting and is fast at the same time. However, numpy's zero-rank arrays are causing trouble as usual. I couldn't find anything useful on google, or by searching here. So, I'm asking you. How should I implement broadcasting efficiently and handle zero-rank arrays at the same time? This whole post became larger than anticipated, sorry. Details: To clarify what I'm talking about I'll give a simple example: Say I want to implement a Heaviside step-function. I.e. a function that acts on the real axis, which is 0 on the negative side, 1 on the positive side, and from case to case either 0, 0.5, or 1 at the point 0. Implementation Masking The most efficient way I found so far is the following. It uses boolean arrays as masks to assign the correct values to the corresponding slots in the output vector. from numpy import * def step_mask(x, limit=+1): """Heaviside step-function. y = 0 if x < 0 y = 1 if x > 0 See below for x == 0. Arguments: x Evaluate the function at these points. limit Which limit at x == 0? limit > 0: y = 1 limit == 0: y = 0.5 limit < 0: y = 0 Return: The values corresponding to x. """ b = broadcast(x, limit) out = zeros(b.shape) out[x>0] = 1 mask = (limit > 0) & (x == 0) out[mask] = 1 mask = (limit == 0) & (x == 0) out[mask] = 0.5 mask = (limit < 0) & (x == 0) out[mask] = 0 return out List Comprehension The following-the-numpy-docs way is to use a list comprehension on the flat iterator of the broadcast object. However, list comprehensions become absolutely unreadable for such complicated functions. def step_comprehension(x, limit=+1): b = broadcast(x, limit) out = empty(b.shape) out.flat = [ ( 1 if x_ > 0 else ( 0 if x_ < 0 else ( 1 if l_ > 0 else ( 0.5 if l_ ==0 else ( 0 ))))) for x_, l_ in b ] return out For Loop And finally, the most naive way is a for loop. It's probably the most readable option. However, Python for-loops are anything but fast. And hence, a really bad idea in numerics. def step_for(x, limit=+1): b = broadcast(x, limit) out = empty(b.shape) for i, (x_, l_) in enumerate(b): if x_ > 0: out[i] = 1 elif x_ < 0: out[i] = 0 elif l_ > 0: out[i] = 1 elif l_ < 0: out[i] = 0 else: out[i] = 0.5 return out Test First of all a brief test to see if the output is correct. >>> x = array([-1, -0.1, 0, 0.1, 1]) >>> step_mask(x, +1) array([ 0., 0., 1., 1., 1.]) >>> step_mask(x, 0) array([ 0. , 0. , 0.5, 1. , 1. ]) >>> step_mask(x, -1) array([ 0., 0., 0., 1., 1.]) It is correct, and the other two functions give the same output. Performance How about efficiency? These are the timings: In [45]: xl = linspace(-2, 2, 500001) In [46]: %timeit step_mask(xl) 10 loops, best of 3: 19.5 ms per loop In [47]: %timeit step_comprehension(xl) 1 loops, best of 3: 1.17 s per loop In [48]: %timeit step_for(xl) 1 loops, best of 3: 1.15 s per loop The masked version performs best as expected. However, I'm surprised that the comprehension is on the same level as the for loop. Zero Rank Arrays But, 0-rank arrays pose a problem. Sometimes you want to use a function scalar input. And preferably not have to worry about wrapping all scalars in at least 1-D arrays. >>> step_mask(1) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<ipython-input-50-91c06aa4487b>", line 1, in <module> step_mask(1) File "script.py", line 22, in step_mask out[x>0] = 1 IndexError: 0-d arrays can't be indexed. >>> step_for(1) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<ipython-input-51-4e0de4fcb197>", line 1, in <module> step_for(1) File "script.py", line 55, in step_for out[i] = 1 IndexError: 0-d arrays can't be indexed. >>> step_comprehension(1) array(1.0) Only the list comprehension can handle 0-rank arrays. The other two versions would need special case handling for 0-rank arrays. Numpy gets a bit messy when you want to use the same code for arrays and scalars. However, I really like to have functions that work on as arbitrary input as possible. Who knows which parameters I'll want to iterate over at some point. Question: What is the best way to implement a function as the one above? Is there a way to avoid if scalar then like special cases? I'm not looking for a built-in Heaviside. It's just a simplified example. In my code the above pattern appears in many places to make parameter iteration as simple as possible without littering the client code with for loops or comprehensions. Furthermore, I'm aware of Cython, or weave & Co., or implementation directly in C. However, the performance of the masked version above is sufficient for the moment. And for the moment I would like to keep things as simple as possible.

  • SQLAuthority News – Guest Post – Performance Counters Gathering using Powershell

    - by pinaldave
    Laerte Junior Laerte Junior has previously helped me personally to resolve the issue with Powershell installation on my computer. He did awesome job to help. He has send this another wonderful article regarding performance counter for readers of this blog. I really liked it and I expect all of you who are Powershell geeks, you will like the same as well. As a good DBA, you know that our social life is restricted to a few movies over the year and, when possible, a pizza in a restaurant next to your company’s place, of course. So what we have to do is to create methods through which we can facilitate our daily processes to go home early, and eventually have a nice time with our family (and not sleeping on the couch). As a consultant or fixed employee, one of our daily tasks is to monitor performance counters using Perfmom. To be honest, IDE is getting more complicated. To deal with this, I thought a solution using Powershell. Yes, with some lines of Powershell, you can configure which counters to use. And with one more line, you can already start collecting data. Let’s see one scenario: You are a consultant who has several clients and has just closed another project in troubleshooting an SQL Server environment. You are to use Perfmom to collect data from the server and you already have its XML configuration files made with the counters that you will be using- a file for memory bottleneck f, one for CPU, etc. With one Powershell command line for each XML file, you start collecting. The output of such a TXT file collection is set to up in an SQL Server. With two lines of command for each XML, you make the whole process of data collection. Creating an XML configuration File to Memory Counters: Get-PerfCounterCategory -CategoryName "Memory" | Get-PerfCounterInstance  | Get-PerfCounterCounters |Save-ConfigPerfCounter -PathConfigFile "c:\temp\ConfigfileMemory.xml" -newfile Creating an XML Configuration File to Buffer Manager, counters Page lookups/sec, Page reads/sec, Page writes/sec, Page life expectancy: Get-PerfCounterCategory -CategoryName "SQLServer:Buffer Manager" | Get-PerfCounterInstance | Get-PerfCounterCounters -CounterName "Page*" | Save-ConfigPerfCounter -PathConfigFile "c:\temp\BufferManager.xml" –NewFile Then you start the collection: Set-CollectPerfCounter -DateTimeStart "05/24/2010 08:00:00" -DateTimeEnd "05/24/2010 22:00:00" -Interval 10 -PathConfigFile c:\temp\ConfigfileMemory.xml -PathOutputFile c:\temp\ConfigfileMemory.txt To let the Buffer Manager collect, you need one more counters, including the Buffer cache hit ratio. Just add a new counter to BufferManager.xml, omitting the new file parameter Get-PerfCounterCategory -CategoryName "SQLServer:Buffer Manager" | Get-PerfCounterInstance | Get-PerfCounterCounters -CounterName "Buffer cache hit ratio" | Save-ConfigPerfCounter -PathConfigFile "c:\temp\BufferManager.xml" And start the collection: Set-CollectPerfCounter -DateTimeStart "05/24/2010 08:00:00" -DateTimeEnd "05/24/2010 22:00:00" -Interval 10 -PathConfigFile c:\temp\BufferManager.xml -PathOutputFile c:\temp\BufferManager.txt You do not know which counters are in the Category Buffer Manager? Simple! Get-PerfCounterCategory -CategoryName "SQLServer:Buffer Manager" | Get-PerfCounterInstance | Get-PerfCounterCounters Let’s see one output file as shown below. It is ready to bulk insert into the SQL Server. As you can see, Powershell makes this process incredibly easy and fast. Do you want to see more examples? • NDepend tool – Why every developer working with Visual Studio.NET must try it!

    - by hajan
    In the past two months, I have had a chance to test the capabilities and features of the amazing NDepend tool designed to help you make your .NET code better, more beautiful and achieve high code quality. In other words, this tool will definitely help you harmonize your code. I mean, you’ve probably heard about Chaos Theory. Experienced developers and architects are already advocates of the programming chaos that happens when working with complex project architecture, the matrix of relationships between objects which simply even if you are the one who have written all that code, you know how hard is to visualize everything what does the code do. When the application get more and more complex, you will start missing a lot of details in your code… NDepend will help you visualize all the details on a clever way that will help you make smart moves to make your code better. The NDepend tool supports many features, such as: Code Query Language – which will help you write custom rules and query your own code! Imagine, you want to find all your methods which have more than 100 lines of code :)! That’s something simple! However, I will dig much deeper in one of my next blogs which I’m going to dedicate to the NDepend’s CQL (Code Query Language) Architecture Visualization – You are an architect and want to visualize your application’s architecture? I’m thinking how many architects will be really surprised from their architectures since NDepend shows your whole architecture showing each piece of it. NDepend will show you how your code is structured. It shows the architecture in graphs, but if you have very complex architecture, you can see it in Dependency Matrix which is more suited to display large architecture Code Metrics – Using NDepend’s panel, you can see the code base according to Code Metrics. You can do some additional filtering, like selecting the top code elements ordered by their current code metric value. You can use the CQL language for this purpose too. Smart Search – NDepend has great searching ability, which is again based on the CQL (Code Query Language). However, you have some options to search using dropdown lists and text boxes and it will generate the appropriate CQL code on fly. Moreover, you can modify the CQL code if you want it to fit some more advanced searching tasks. Compare Builds and Code Difference – NDepend will also help you compare previous versions of your code with the current one at one of the most clever ways I’ve seen till now. Create Custom Rules – using CQL you can create custom rules and let NDepend warn you on each build if you break a rule Reporting – NDepend can automatically generate reports with detailed stats, graph representation, dependency matrixes and some additional advanced reporting features that will simply explain you everything related to your application’s code, architecture and what you’ve done. And that’s not all. As I’ve seen, there are many other features that NDepend supports. I will dig more in the upcoming days and will blog more about it. The team who built the NDepend have also created good documentation, which you can find on the NDepend website. On their website, you can also find some good videos that will help you get started quite fast. It’s easy to install and what is very important it is fully integrated with Visual Studio. To get you started, you can watch the following Getting Started Online Demo and Tutorial with explanations and screenshots. If you are interested to know more about how to use the features of this tool, either visit their website or wait for my next blogs where I will show some real examples of using the tool and how it helps make your code better. And the last thing for this blog, I would like to copy one sentence from the NDepend’s home page which says: ‘Hence the software design becomes concrete, code reviews are effective, large refactoring are easy and evolution is mastered.’ Website: www.ndepend.com Getting Started: http://www.ndepend.com/GettingStarted.aspx Features: http://www.ndepend.com/Features.aspx Download: http://www.ndepend.com/NDependDownload.aspx Hope you like it! Please do let me know your feedback by providing comments to my blog post. Kind Regards, Hajan

  • Airtel 3G in Chennai – User experience, Price & What’s the catch?

    - by Boonei
    Finally ! Here we are with Airtel 3G in India. Now Airtel customers can have a go at real 3G speed. Sources suggest that the delay in rolling out 3G was due to hardware problems. It was provided by Ericsson. Now first things first. Let me get to the point. I had subscribed to Airtel’s 3G pack Rs.100 for 100 MB. This is to check out how good it is, did not want to pay a hefty sum at the first instance. It was pretty smooth upgrading.. After the upgrade I did see the much awaited 3G signal bar on my phone. Ok! now its testing time. User experience First I did a bit of browsing, boy ! it was pretty quick, web pages loaded in a jiffy. I really did not time it because it loaded really quick. I loaded a YouTube Video, no buffering, watched the 4 min Video with no problems, it took around 6 MB of data usage Made a Skype call for about 6 min, voice clarity was really good and data usage was around 4-5 MB Tried Google Maps everything was so fast could not see the difference between computer and my phone, used it for about couple of minutes. Did listen to an Online Radio for about 5 min took about 8 MB of data usage Guess there is no need to say about Facebook or Twitter. It was good obviously. Video Call – Not yet tested Price – Do you get what you pay for ? 3G speed is fantastic, you have to really feel it to enjoy it. But currently in Airtel, 3G is available only in 3 places wiz. Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore. ok ! Its not even there in all the metros? hmmm. 3G signal was not available in all parts of Chennai, often in many places it changed to 2G. Let alone all the places, even in my house when walking from one room to another sometimes its shows 2G. When it chaged from 3G to 2G there was lag in the application when it was loading data which often made me wonder if the application hanged. Currently prices not low. 2G plans in Airtel is Rs.98 for 2GB and for Rs.100 its only 100MB in 3G. Now you decide please, it’s quite a debate. The Catch – There is always a catch right ? If you have bought 3G connection and in places where 3G is not available (2G) and use any application that requires data connections (youtube, browse, chat etc) its changed with 3G!. Meaning if you have bought 100MB of 3G by paying Rs.100 like I did, suppose you used the connection for about 10MB using 2G, then it would reduce from the 100MB to 90 MB….That’s bad ! You cannot have 2G and 3G plans activated at the same point of time in your phone. You will pay 3G price for using 2G.
