  Hey I am a university student (math major), but programming since I was little (read: 14). I am starting a new programming job tomorrow at a very big company. However I just found out that I might be just working with access for a couple of weeks (macros and whatnot). Can someone just give me a general rundown on how to create and use VB in access. What I mean is how do tables refer to themselves (as objects? as what name?) how to run queries through vb and such. thanks all.

  I'm looking for a good tool that can take a full mailing address, formatted for display or use with a mailing label, and convert it into a structured object. So for instance: // Start with a formatted address in a single string string f = "18698 E. Main Street\r\nBig Town, AZ, 86011"; // Parse into address Address addr = new Address(f); addr.Street; // 18698 E. Main Street addr.Locality; // Big Town addr.Region; // AZ addr.PostalCode; // 86011 Now I could do this using RegEx. But the tricky part is keeping it general enough to handle any address in the world! I'm sure there has to be something out there that can do it. If anyone noticed, this is actually the format of the opensocial.address object.

• Avoid hourglass mouse cursor when calling a web-service?

  I don't know if this is a general web-services issue or just my specific scenario, which is a WPF application with a DispatcherTimer calling a web-service method. Whenever the timer is called, the mouse cursor automatically changes to an hourglass cursor. The processing of the call is very short and happens every 3 seconds, so the user experience is that every 3 seconds the mouse filckers as an hourglass for a split-second and then goes back to the normal cursor representation. How can I avoid this inconvenience? Thanks.

• Simple installer for Visual C# Express 2008

  I am looking for some general feedback here. I have a very simple application that I created in VC# Express 2008, with no special dependencies. Now, I am going to release it as open source, and am curious as to how I should deploy it. Do I need to create an installer package with any dll's? Should I just zip up the *.exe file with a README? Also, how should I go about handling the requirement for the .NET framework that a C# program needs?

  I am getting familiar with Zend Framework (and MVC with PHP in general) for a personal project. I have previous experience with Smarty and have no major gripes with it, but I would like to use this project as a good in-depth learning exercise. Those of you familiar with different templating engines and ZF: Do you believe there are better templating engines than Smarty in conjunction with ZF and why? I would like to apply what I learn to the real world and production environments. The personal project will be fairly robust. User management, sessions, security, database interaction, form input, jQuery, etc.

• DotNetOpenAuth for previously authorized site

  I've had great luck with DotNetOpenAuth to do 3 legged authorization. Currently, I am connecting and pulling in some Google data. My question is that apparently, if you have already auth'd my web application to your Google account, when I call var accessTokenResponse = google.ProcessUserAuthorization(); It basically does nothing. How do I get the token for an account that has already auth'd my application? I see no callback of any kind. I'm chocking this up to my ignorance about OAuth in general.

• Eclipse debugging "source not found"

  I just started using Eclipse so go easy on me ;). But when trying to debug a JUnit test case I get a dialog that states the the source is not found when I get to this line in the code in my test method: Assert.assertEquals(1, contents.size()); I know I should probably go and try and download the source from somewhere, but I really don't want to because I have no interest in stepping into the JUnit code. I have the JUnit runtime jar so Why does Eclipse expect me to have all the referenced tools source code in order to debug my own code (seems somewhat silly)? My main question is though, how can I tell Eclipse to skip this dialog when the source is not available and allow me to continue to debug my own code? [Edit] I've isolated the cause of this. It seems that Eclipse seems to think it needs the source when an exception is thrown by the internal JUnit code. In general is there anyway to tell it that it doesn't and just have it throw up an error dialog of some kind instead?

• Reading HttpURLConnection InputStream - manual buffer or BufferedInputStream?

  When reading the InputStream of an HttpURLConnection, is there any reason to use one of the following over the other? I've seen both used in examples. Manual Buffer: while ((length = inputStream.read(buffer)) > 0) { os.write(buf, 0, ret); } BufferedInputStream is = http.getInputStream(); bis = new BufferedInputStream(is); ByteArrayBuffer baf = new ByteArrayBuffer(50); int current = 0; while ((current = bis.read()) != -1) { baf.append(current); } EDIT I'm still new to HTTP in general but one consideration that comes to mind is that if I am using a persistent HTTP connection, I can't just read until the input stream is empty right? In that case, wouldn't I need to read the message length and just read the input stream for that length? And similarly, if NOT using a persistent connection, is the code I included 100% good to go in terms of reading the stream properly?

  Hi, I'm always struggling with something like the following Java example: String breads[] = {"Brown", "White", "Sandwich"}; int count[] = new int[breads.length]; for (int i = 0; i < ****; i++) { // Prompt the number of breads } ****: which array.length should I choose? I can choose between breads.length and count.length I know it would be the same result, but I don't know which one I shoud choose. There are many other examples where I get the same problem. • NSUserDefaults and default language used for I18N

  I have searched around a lot for this and found some answers that sounded quite like what I wanted but never worked. I simply need to have my iPhone app load NIBs and Localizable.strings that I decide (through user selection) rather than the ones that are established through the global iPhone/iPad settings. General consensus seems to be that this line [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] setObject:[NSArray arrayWithObject:@"ro"] forKey:@"AppleLanguages"]; would do the trick (in this specific case, load the NIBs and Localizable.strings in ro.lproj) but I have not had such luck. It keeps on looking for the files in en.lproj or whatever language I chose in the Settings app. I have then tried adding this line [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] setObject:[NSArray arrayWithObject:@"ro_RO"] forKey:@"AppleLocale"]; and to my great surprise, it worked! ...only once :-( then back to the same issue. Has anyone got any idea how to solve this issue? The aforementioned code was added at the very start of applicationDidFinishLaunching, which is before any NIBs or strings files should be loaded.

• Assigning a view controller to be the delegate of a subview which is not directly descendent?

  I am writing an iphone app where in numerous cases a subview needs to talk to its superview. For example: View A has a table view that contains photos A has a subview B which allows users to add photos, upon which I want to auto append them to A's table view So far I have been creating a @protocol in B, and registering A as the delegate. The problem in my case is that B has a subview C that allows users to add content, and I want actions in C to invoke changes in its grandparent, A. Currently I am working around this by passing around a self pointer to my base view controller (C.delegate = B.delegate), but it doesn't seem very proper to me. Any thoughts? (and/or general advice on code organization when all sort of subviews needs to talk to superviews would be greatly appreciated) Thanks!

(It Should Look Something Like "SELECT District FROM City WHERE Name='Simi Valley';") I already realize that in this simplistic case it would be very easy to simply reconstruct the query... but how can I access it in a general way that will work for very complicated prepared statements, and cases where I don't necessarily already understand the intended structure of the query, etc. Isn't there some function or method that can be called on the statement object that will return the actual text of the SQL query, after binding?

• Is there an easy way to sign a C++ CLI assembly in VS 2010?

  Right now I am setting the Linker/Advanced/KeyFile option. I am getting the "mt.exe : general warning 810100b3: is a strong-name signed assembly and embedding a manifest invalidates the signature. You will need to re-sign this file to make it a valid assembly.". Reading from the web, it sounds like I have to set the delay signing option, download the SDK, and run sn.exe as a post build event. Surely there must be an easier way to do this common operation in VS2010?

  While not a torrent, but some articles can be found on the net about function testing (particularly http://blogs.sun.com/geertjan/entry/gui_testing_on_the_netbeans). However the tools mentioned by them do not seem to be maintained, or don't have a plugin working with the most recent version of Netbeans (6.8). Do you have any function test setup for GUI? What is your level of integration into the development process (IDE integration, ant, etc). Additional candy is that Netbeans is not only the IDE, but the GUI app is also developed for Netbeans 6.8 Platform (so I'm mainly interested in GUI testing NB-platform apps, but tips for any Swing apps in general would be a help too).

  I am writing a trigger to audit updates and deletes in tables. I am using SQL Server 2008 My questions are, Is there a way to find out what action is being taken on a record without going through the selection phase of the deleted and inserted tables? Another question is, if the record is being deleted, how do I record within the audit table the user that is performing the delete. (NOTE: the user connected to the database is a general connection string with a set user, I need the user who is logged into either a web app or a windows app) Please help?

• Setting up a Git remote with a truncated history

  I am in the midst of doing some non-standard, probably doomed, experiments on a git repository. The goal is to create a remote repository with a truncated history which can still share commits with an internal repository which has a full history. I've had some success using a graft to connect the public history with the private history - when I push from my internal repository, only the post-graft contents are included. So my main question is: what is the simplest way of taking a commit, eliminating its parent and writing a graft in place of the parent? A more general question: is what I'm trying to do going to cause me pain in the long run, do you know if there's a better way?

• Can someone please explain to me the basic function of Intents in the Android OS?

  I'm new to programming applications for the Android OS. As far as general architecture of the OS goes, I understand that processes are implemented as Linux processes and that each one is sandboxed. However, I'm utterly confused on the IPCs and syscalls (if any) used. I know that the IBinder is a form of this; parcels are sent back and forth between processes and Bundles are array forms of parcels (?). But even that is still unfamiliar to me. Same with Intents. All in all, I don't understand what kinds of IPCs are implemented and how. Could someone briefly explain to me the specific methods used by user level applications in Android OS to communicate with each other and the OS? I've done kernel programming and played with various IPCs in Linux (Ubuntu and Debian) so it would help immensely if this was all explained in relation to what I'm familiar with...   Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#.

Can anyone recommend a book(s) specifically aimed at designing and (hopefully) implementing an MMORPG? I don't need general how to design or how to code books. Maybe a really good generic games book, but I am not interested in 1st person shooters, I want to know what it takes to implement an MMORPG. Good books, maybe also good URLs. • Problem with onscreen keyboard on Droid

  Hi all i am developing an application which has a general text entry form. So while testing on my moto droid, i am facing a strange issue-- when i touch an input field ( which is at lower end of the screen) -- the on screen keyboard pops up and hides the input field. So user have to enter blindly. So is this a sdk issue OR it is particular for droids OR am i doing something wrong??? I have tested this same form on G1, Hero..i see no issues at all. Please help...

It's basically a chat server with the major additional ability to play games. I'd like to create categories of features that are offered to users. My question is, are there any useful standard feature categories? Does not have to be specific to my case, I'm interested in the general case as well.   I'm a complete newb to MDX / OLAP, "data warehousing" in general. I have the following MDX query and would like my results to display the month's number (1 = January, 12 = December). Luckily, the cube creator create a member property named "Month Number Of Year" When I try to run the query, I get the following... "Query (4, 8) The function expects a tuple set expression for the 1 argument. A string or numeric expression was used." Any suggestions for fixing this? Thanks!
