  • Bulk inserts into sqlite db on the iphone...

    I'm inserting a batch of 100 records, each containing a dictonary containing arbitrarily long HTML strings, and by god, it's slow. On the iphone, the runloop is blocking for several seconds during this transaction. Is my only recourse to use another thread? I'm already using several for acquiring data from HTTP servers, and the sqlite documentation explicitly discourages threading with the database, even though it's supposed to be thread-safe... Is there something I'm doing extremely wrong that if fixed, would drastically reduce the time it takes to complete the whole operation?   • How to break a Hibernate session?

    In the Hibernate reference, it is stated several times that All exceptions thrown by Hibernate are fatal. This means you have to roll back the database transaction and close the current Session. You aren’t allowed to continue working with a Session that threw an exception. One of our legacy apps uses a single session to update/insert many records from files into a DB table. Each recourd update/insert is done in a separate transaction, which is then duly committed (or rolled back in case an error occurred). Then for the next record a new transaction is opened etc. But the same session is used throughout the whole process, even if a HibernateException was caught in the middle. We are using Oracle 9i btw with Hibernate 3.24.sp1 on JBoss 4.2. Reading the above in the book, I realized that this design may fail. So I refactored the app to use a separate session for each record update. In a unit test with a mock session factory, I could prove that it is now requesting a new session for each record update. So far, so good. However, we found no way to reproduce the session failure while testing the whole app (would this be a stress test btw, or ...?). We thought of shutting down the listener of the DB but we realized that the app is keeping a bunch of connections open to the DB, and the listener would not affect those connections. (This is a web app, activated once every night by a scheduler, but it can also be activated via the browser.) Then we tried to kill some of those connections in the DB while the app was processing updates - this resulted in some failed updates, but then the app happily continued. Apparently Hibernate is clever enough to reopen broken connections under the hood without breaking the whole session. So this might not be a critical issue, as our app seems to be robust enough even in its original form. However, the issue keeps bugging me. I would like to know: Under what circumstances does the Hibernate session really become unusable after a HibernateException was thrown? How to reproduce this in a test? (What's the proper term for such a test?)

    Hello, I'm attempting to write a script to generate SSH Identity key pairs for me. from M2Crypto import RSA key = RSA.gen_key(1024, 65337) key.save_key("/tmp/my.key", cipher=None) The file /tmp/my.key looks great now. By running ssh-keygen -y -f /tmp/my.key > /tmp/my.key.pub I can extract the public key. My question is how can I extract the public key from python?     Hi, We just came across a weird bug in our application that uses the asp.net membership. The administrator had created some users with spaces behind their name: 'My Username ' In the Users table this is saved normally, so without the spaces: 'My Username' The user can also login using the name without the spaces: 'My Username' When we use User.Identity.Name in our applicatie the result is the username WITH the spaces: 'My Username '. Where do these spaces come from? They aren't stored in the Users table so where does he get this from?! Thanks!

    Hi folks. Here's the problem: I have a project that needs to be migrated to Microsoft SQL Server 2008. We have data in text files for the Oracle SQL Loader and now we need to get that data into the SQL Server DB. I could write a program that converts everything into INSERT statements but there has to be a more comfortable way to so this. Any suggestions? PS: I don't think my company wants to buy additional Software to do this job so that's out.

    I am using impersonation is used to access file on UNC share as below. var ctx = ((WindowsIdentity)HttpContext.Current.User.Identity).Impersonate(); string level = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().ImpersonationLevel); On two Windows 2003 servers using IIS6, I am getting different impersonation levels: Delegation on one server and Impersonation on the other server. This causes issues where I am unable to access the UNC share on the server with 'Impersonation' level. What could be causing this difference? I searched through machine.config and IIS settings for the app pool, site and virtual directories - but aren't able to find the cause of this problem.

    I know there are a ton of posts about this issue but none of them seem to solve my problem. Here's the scenario: I have a CreateDate DateTime column in my MS SQL Server database User table that is non-nullable and is automatically set using GetDate() method in "Default Value or Binding" setting. I am able to create a User just fine with the standard EF Insert but when I try to update the user, I get this error: The conversion of a datetime2 data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value. What is the trick to not having the EF worry about the CreateDate column for updates? I have the StoreGenerationPattern = Identity but that isn't helping.     Use case: I've just entered insert mode, and typed some text. Now I want to make it uppercase. It can be done via gUmotion. However, I can't find the motion over the text entered in the recent input session. It's somewhat strange and the concept of such motion is buggy (where to move if you've deleted text, for example?), but it may solve my problem. Or, are there other ways of making uppercase the text you've recently inputted?
