• NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 not working on Ubuntu 12.04

- by Jagged
I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? Any help appreciated. uname -a: Linux HP-ENVY-15-1104tx 3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux lshw: hp-envy-15-1104tx description: Notebook • SharePoint 2010 – SQL Server has an unsupported version 10.0.2531.0

- by Jeff Widmer
I am trying to perform a database attach upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010. At this point I am trying to attach the content database to a Web application by using Windows Powershell: Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name <DatabaseName> -DatabaseServer <ServerName> -WebApplication
[-Updateuserexperience] I am following the directions from this TechNet article: Attach databases and upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010. When I go to mount the content database I am receiving this error: Mount-SPContentDatabase : Could not connect to [DATABASE_SERVER] using integrated security: SQL server at [DATABASE_SERVER] has an unsupported version 10.0.2531.0. Please refer to “http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=165761” for information on the minimum required SQL Server versions and how to download them. At first this did not make sense because the default SharePoint Foundation 2010 website was running just fine. But then I realized that the default SharePoint Foundation site runs off of SQL Server Express and that I had just installed SQL Server Web Edition (since the database is greater than 4GB) and restored the database to this version of SQL Server. Checking the documentation link above I see that SharePoint Server 2010 requires a 64-bit edition of SQL Server with the minimum required SQL Server versions as follows: SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1, version number 10.0.2531 SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 cumulative update package 3, version number 9.00.4220.00 SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 cumulative update package 2, version number 10.00.2714.00 The version of SQL Server 2008 Web Edition with Service Pack 1 (the version I installed on this machine) is 10.0.2531.0. SELECT @@VERSION: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP1) - 10.0.2531.0 (X64) Mar 29 2009 10:11:52 Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation Web Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) (VM) But I had to read the article several times since the minimum version number for SQL Server Express is 10.0.2531.0. At first I thought I was good with the version of SQL Server 2008 Web that I had installed, also 10.0.2531.0. But then I read further to see that there is a cumulative update (hotfix) for SQL Server 2008 SP1 (NOT the Express edition) that is required for SharePoint 2010 and will bump the version number to 10.0.2714.00. So the solution was to install the Cumulative update package 2 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 on my SQL Server 2008 Web Edition to allow SharePoint 2010 to work with SQL Server 2008 (other than the SQL Server 2008 Express version). SELECT @@VERSION (After installing Cumulative update package 2): Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP1) - 10.0.2714.0 (X64) May 14 2009 16:08:52 Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation Web Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) (VM)

• SQL SERVER – When are Statistics Updated – What triggers Statistics to Update

- by pinaldave
If you are an SQL Server Consultant/Trainer involved with Performance Tuning and Query Optimization, I am sure you have faced the following questions many times. When is statistics updated? What is the interval of Statistics update? What is the algorithm behind update statistics? These are the puzzling questions and more. I searched the Internet as well many official MS documents in order to find answers. All of them have provided almost similar algorithm. However, at many places, I have seen a bit of variation in algorithm as well. I have finally compiled the list of various algorithms and decided to share what was the most common “factor” in all of them. I would like to ask for your suggestions as whether following the details, when Statistics is updated, are accurate or not. I will update this blog post with accurate information after receiving your ideas. The answer I have found here is when statistics are expired and not when they are automatically updated. I need your help here to answer when they are updated. Permanent table If the table has no rows, statistics is updated when there is a single change in table. If the number of rows in a table is less than 500, statistics is updated for every 500 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is more than 500, statistics is updated for every 500+20% of rows changes in table. Temporary table If the table has no rows, statistics is updated when there is a single change in table. If the number of rows in table is less than 6, statistics is updated for every 6 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is less than 500, statistics is updated for every 500 changes in table. If the number of rows in table is more than 500, statistics is updated for every 500+20% of rows changes in table. Table variable There is no statistics for Table Variables. If you want to read further about statistics, I suggest that you read the white paper Statistics Used by the Query Optimizer in Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Let me know your opinions about statistics, as well as if there is any update in the above algorithm. • ANTS CLR and Memory Profiler In Depth Review (Part 1 of 2 – CLR Profiler)

- by ToStringTheory
One of the things that people might not know about me, is my obsession to make my code as efficient as possible. Many people might not realize how much of a task or undertaking that this might be, but it is surely a task as monumental as climbing Mount Everest, except this time it is a challenge for the mind… In trying to make code efficient, there are many different factors that play a part – size of project or solution, tiers, language used, experience and training of the programmer, technologies used, maintainability of the code – the list can go on for quite some time. I spend quite a bit of time when developing trying to determine what is the best way to implement a feature to accomplish the efficiency that I look to achieve. One program that I have recently come to learn about – Red Gate ANTS Performance (CLR) and Memory profiler gives me tools to accomplish that job more efficiently as well. In this review, I am going to cover some of the features of the ANTS profiler set by compiling some hideous example code to test against. Notice As a member of the Geeks With Blogs Influencers program, one of the perks is the ability to review products, in exchange for a free license to the program. I have not let this affect my opinions of the product in any way, and Red Gate nor Geeks With Blogs has tried to influence my opinion regarding this product in any way. Introduction The ANTS Profiler pack provided by Red Gate was something that I had not heard of before receiving an email regarding an offer to review it for a license. Since I look to make my code efficient, it was a no brainer for me to try it out! One thing that I have to say took me by surprise is that upon downloading the program and installing it you fill out a form for your usual contact information. Sure enough within 2 hours, I received an email from a sales representative at Red Gate asking if she could help me to achieve the most out of my trial time so it wouldn’t go to waste. After replying to her and explaining that I was looking to review its feature set, she put me in contact with someone that setup a demo session to give me a quick rundown of its features via an online meeting. After having dealt with a massive ordeal with one of my utility companies and their complete lack of customer service, Red Gates friendly and helpful representatives were a breath of fresh air, and something I was thankful for. ANTS CLR Profiler The ANTS CLR profiler is the thing I want to focus on the most in this post, so I am going to dive right in now. Install was simple and took no time at all. It installed both the profiler for the CLR and Memory, but also visual studio extensions to facilitate the usage of the profilers (click any images for full size images): The Visual Studio menu options (under ANTS menu) Starting the CLR Performance Profiler from the start menu yields this window If you follow the instructions after launching the program from the start menu (Click File > New Profiling Session to start a new project), you are given a dialog with plenty of options for profiling: The New Session dialog. Lots of options. One thing I noticed is that the buttons in the lower right were half-covered by the panel of the application. If I had to guess, I would imagine that this is caused by my DPI settings being set to 125%. This is a problem I have seen in other applications as well that don’t scale well to different dpi scales. The profiler options give you the ability to profile: .NET Executable ASP.NET web application (hosted in IIS) ASP.NET web application (hosted in IIS express) ASP.NET web application (hosted in Cassini Web Development Server) SharePoint web application (hosted in IIS) Silverlight 4+ application Windows Service COM+ server XBAP (local XAML browser application) Attach to an already running .NET 4 process Choosing each option provides a varying set of other variables/options that one can set including options such as application arguments, operating path, record I/O performance performance counters to record (43 counters in all!), etc… All in all, they give you the ability to profile many different .Net project types, and make it simple to do so. In most cases of my using this application, I would be using the built in Visual Studio extensions, as they automatically start a new profiling project in ANTS with the options setup, and start your program, however RedGate has made it easy enough to profile outside of Visual Studio as well. On the flip side of this, as someone who lives most of their work life in Visual Studio, one thing I do wish is that instead of opening an entirely separate application/gui to perform profiling after launching, that instead they would provide a Visual Studio panel with the information, and integrate more of the profiling project information into Visual Studio. So, now that we have an idea of what options that the profiler gives us, its time to test its abilities and features. Horrendous Example Code – Prime Number Generator One of my interests besides development, is Physics and Math – what I went to college for. I have especially always been interested in prime numbers, as they are something of a mystery… So, I decided that I would go ahead and to test the abilities of the profiler, I would write a small program, website, and library to generate prime numbers in the quantity that you ask for. I am going to start off with some terrible code, and show how I would see the profiler being used as a development tool. First off, the IPrimes interface (all code is downloadable at the end of the post): interface IPrimes { IEnumerable<int> GetPrimes(int retrieve); } Simple enough, right? Anything that implements the interface will (hopefully) provide an IEnumerable of int, with the quantity specified in the parameter argument. Next, I am going to implement this interface in the most basic way: public class DumbPrimes : IPrimes { public IEnumerable<int> GetPrimes(int retrieve) { //store a list of primes already found var _foundPrimes = new List<int>() { 2, 3 }; //if i ask for 1 or two primes, return what asked for if (retrieve <= _foundPrimes.Count()) return _foundPrimes.Take(retrieve); //the next number to look at int _analyzing = 4; //since I already determined I don't have enough //execute at least once, and until quantity is sufficed do { //assume prime until otherwise determined bool isPrime = true; //start dividing at 2 //divide until number is reached, or determined not prime for (int i = 2; i < _analyzing && isPrime; i++) { //if (i) goes into _analyzing without a remainder, //_analyzing is NOT prime if (_analyzing % i == 0) isPrime = false; } //if it is prime, add to found list if (isPrime) _foundPrimes.Add(_analyzing); //increment number to analyze next _analyzing++; } while (_foundPrimes.Count() < retrieve); return _foundPrimes; } } This is the simplest way to get primes in my opinion. Checking each number by the straight definition of a prime – is it divisible by anything besides 1 and itself. I have included this code in a base class library for my solution, as I am going to use it to demonstrate a couple of features of ANTS. This class library is consumed by a simple non-MVVM WPF application, and a simple MVC4 website. I will not post the WPF code here inline, as it is simply an ObservableCollection<int>, a label, two textbox’s, and a button. Starting a new Profiling Session So, in Visual Studio, I have just completed my first stint developing the GUI and DumbPrimes IPrimes class, so now I want to check my codes efficiency by profiling it. All I have to do is build the solution (surprised initiating a profiling session doesn’t do this, but I suppose I can understand it), and then click the ANTS menu, followed by Profile Performance. I am then greeted by the profiler starting up and already monitoring my program live: You are provided with a realtime graph at the top, and a pane at the bottom giving you information on how to proceed. I am going to start by asking my program to show me the first 15000 primes: After the program finally began responding again (I did all the work on the main UI thread – how bad!), I stopped the profiler, which did kill the process of my program too. One important thing to note, is that the profiler by default wants to give you a lot of detail about the operation – line hit counts, time per line, percent time per line, etc… The important thing to remember is that this itself takes a lot of time. When running my program without the profiler attached, it can generate the 15000 primes in 5.18 seconds, compared to 74.5 seconds – almost a 1500 percent increase. While this may seem like a lot, remember that there is a trade off. It may be WAY more inefficient, however, I am able to drill down and make improvements to specific problem areas, and then decrease execution time all around. Analyzing the Profiling Session After clicking ‘Stop Profiling’, the process running my application stopped, and the entire execution time was automatically selected by ANTS, and the results shown below: Now there are a number of interesting things going on here, I am going to cover each in a section of its own: Real Time Performance Counter Bar (top of screen) At the top of the screen, is the real time performance bar. As your application is running, this will constantly update with the currently selected performance counters status. A couple of cool things to note are the fact that you can drag a selection around specific time periods to drill down the detail views in the lower 2 panels to information pertaining to only that period. After selecting a time period, you can bookmark a section and name it, so that it is easy to find later, or after reloaded at a later time. You can also zoom in, out, or fit the graph to the space provided – useful for drilling down. It may be hard to see, but at the top of the processor time graph below the time ticks, but above the red usage graph, there is a green bar. This bar shows at what times a method that is selected in the ‘Call tree’ panel is called. Very cool to be able to click on a method and see at what times it made an impact. As I said before, ANTS provides 43 different performance counters you can hook into. Click the arrow next to the Performance tab at the top will allow you to change between different counters if you have them selected: Method Call Tree, ADO.Net Database Calls, File IO – Detail Panel Red Gate really hit the mark here I think. When you select a section of the run with the graph, the call tree populates to fill a hierarchical tree of method calls, with information regarding each of the methods. By default, methods are hidden where the source is not provided (framework type code), however, Red Gate has integrated Reflector into ANTS, so even if you don’t have source for something, you can select a method and get the source if you want. Methods are also hidden where the impact is seen as insignificant – methods that are only executed for 1% of the time of the overall calling methods time; in other words, working on making them better is not where your efforts should be focused. – Smart! Source Panel – Detail Panel The source panel is where you can see line level information on your code, showing the code for the currently selected method from the Method Call Tree. If the code is not available, Reflector takes care of it and shows the code anyways! As you can notice, there does seem to be a problem with how ANTS determines what line is the actual line that a call is completed on. I have suspicions that this may be due to some of the inline code optimizations that the CLR applies upon compilation of the assembly. In a method with comments, the problem is much more severe: As you can see here, apparently the most offending code in my base library was a comment – *gasp*! Removing the comments does help quite a bit, however I hope that Red Gate works on their counter algorithm soon to improve the logic on positioning for statistics: I did a small test just to demonstrate the lines are correct without comments. For me, it isn’t a deal breaker, as I can usually determine the correct placements by looking at the application code in the region and determining what makes sense, but it is something that would probably build up some irritation with time. Feature – Suggest Method for Optimization A neat feature to really help those in need of a pointer, is the menu option under tools to automatically suggest methods to optimize/improve: Nice feature – clicking it filters the call tree and stars methods that it thinks are good candidates for optimization. I do wish that they would have made it more visible for those of use who aren’t great on sight: Process Integration I do think that this could have a place in my process. After experimenting with the profiler, I do think it would be a great benefit to do some development, testing, and then after all the bugs are worked out, use the profiler to check on things to make sure nothing seems like it is hogging more than its fair share. For example, with this program, I would have developed it, ran it, tested it – it works, but slowly. After looking at the profiler, and seeing the massive amount of time spent in 1 method, I might go ahead and try to re-implement IPrimes (I actually would probably rewrite the offending code, but so that I can distribute both sets of code easily, I’m just going to make another implementation of IPrimes). Using two pieces of knowledge about prime numbers can make this method MUCH more efficient – prime numbers fall into two buckets 6k+/-1 , and a number is prime if it is not divisible by any other primes before it: public class SmartPrimes : IPrimes { public IEnumerable<int> GetPrimes(int retrieve) { //store a list of primes already found var _foundPrimes = new List<int>() { 2, 3 }; //if i ask for 1 or two primes, return what asked for if (retrieve <= _foundPrimes.Count()) return _foundPrimes.Take(retrieve); //the next number to look at int _k = 1; //since I already determined I don't have enough //execute at least once, and until quantity is sufficed do { //assume prime until otherwise determined bool isPrime = true; int potentialPrime; //analyze 6k-1 //assign the value to potential potentialPrime = 6 * _k - 1; //if there are any primes that divise this, it is NOT a prime number //using PLINQ for quick boost isPrime = !_foundPrimes.AsParallel() .Any(prime => potentialPrime % prime == 0); //if it is prime, add to found list if (isPrime) _foundPrimes.Add(potentialPrime); if (_foundPrimes.Count() == retrieve) break; //analyze 6k+1 //assign the value to potential potentialPrime = 6 * _k + 1; //if there are any primes that divise this, it is NOT a prime number //using PLINQ for quick boost isPrime = !_foundPrimes.AsParallel() .Any(prime => potentialPrime % prime == 0); //if it is prime, add to found list if (isPrime) _foundPrimes.Add(potentialPrime); //increment k to analyze next _k++; } while (_foundPrimes.Count() < retrieve); return _foundPrimes; } } Now there are definitely more things I can do to help make this more efficient, but for the scope of this example, I think this is fine (but still hideous)! Profiling this now yields a happy surprise 27 seconds to generate the 15000 primes with the profiler attached, and only 1.43 seconds without. One important thing I wanted to call out though was the performance graph now: Notice anything odd? The %Processor time is above 100%. This is because there is now more than 1 core in the operation. A better label for the chart in my mind would have been %Core time, but to each their own. Another odd thing I noticed was that the profiler seemed to be spot on this time in my DumbPrimes class with line details in source, even with comments.. Odd. Profiling Web Applications The last thing that I wanted to cover, that means a lot to me as a web developer, is the great amount of work that Red Gate put into the profiler when profiling web applications. In my solution, I have a simple MVC4 application setup with 1 page, a single input form, that will output prime values as my WPF app did. Launching the profiler from Visual Studio as before, nothing is really different in the profiler window, however I did receive a UAC prompt for a Red Gate helper app to integrate with the web server without notification. After requesting 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 primes, and looking at the profiler session, things are slightly different from before: As you can see, there are 4 spikes of activity in the processor time graph, but there is also something new in the call tree: That’s right – ANTS will actually group method calls by get/post operations, so it is easier to find out what action/page is giving the largest problems… Pretty cool in my mind! Overview Overall, I think that Red Gate ANTS CLR Profiler has a lot to offer, however I think it also has a long ways to go. 3 Biggest Pros: Ability to easily drill down from time graph, to method calls, to source code Wide variety of counters to choose from when profiling your application Excellent integration/grouping of methods being called from web applications by request – BRILLIANT! 3 Biggest Cons: Issue regarding line details in source view Nit pick – Processor time vs. Core time Nit pick – Lack of full integration with Visual Studio Ratings Ease of Use (7/10) – I marked down here because of the problems with the line level details and the extra work that that entails, and the lack of better integration with Visual Studio. Effectiveness (10/10) – I believe that the profiler does EXACTLY what it purports to do. Especially with its large variety of performance counters, a definite plus! Features (9/10) – Besides the real time performance monitoring, and the drill downs that I’ve shown here, ANTS also has great integration with ADO.Net, with the ability to show database queries run by your application in the profiler. This, with the line level details, the web request grouping, reflector integration, and various options to customize your profiling session I think create a great set of features! Customer Service (10/10) – My entire experience with Red Gate personnel has been nothing but good. their people are friendly, helpful, and happy! UI / UX (8/10) – The interface is very easy to get around, and all of the options are easy to find. With a little bit of poking around, you’ll be optimizing Hello World in no time flat! Overall (8/10) – Overall, I am happy with the Performance Profiler and its features, as well as with the service I received when working with the Red Gate personnel. I WOULD recommend you trying the application and seeing if it would fit into your process, BUT, remember there are still some kinks in it to hopefully be worked out. My next post will definitely be shorter (hopefully), but thank you for reading up to here, or skipping ahead! Please, if you do try the product, drop me a message and let me know what you think! I would love to hear any opinions you may have on the product. • Getting started with Document Set in SharePoint2010

- by ybbest
Folders are widely used in traditional file based system, in SharePoint world you can create folder in the document library as well. However, there is a new improved feature in SharePoint called Document Set; you can attach metadata to the document set. To get start with Document set, you can perforce the following steps. 1. Go to Site Settings >>Site collection features >>Activate the Document Sets feature. 2. After the Document Sets feature is activated, you will get a new content type called Document Set. 3. Next, we can create a custom content type called Loan Application Document Set that inherited from Document Set Content Type. 4. Then I create a new column called Application Number. 5. Add this field to the loan application content type 6. Create a new Content Type called Loan Contract form that inherited from Document content type. 7. Add the Application Number to the Loan Contract form content type. 8. Create a new Content Type called Loan Application form that inherited from Document content type and add Application Number to it.(The same step as above.) 9.Go to the Loan Application Document Set content type and go to the Document Set Settings. 10. You can define which content type you would like this Document set contains and you can also define the default document for each content type. When you create a new document set, those default documents will get automatically created in the document set. You can also define the Shared field that shared across content types; in my case I define the Application number and description as my shared fields. Finally, you can define the fields that you’d like to show in the document set welcome page. 11. Now create a new document library and attach those content types to the document library and create a new loan application document set. 12. You will see the default document created in the document set.If you updated Application Number on the document set , the field will get updated in the documents inside the document set as well.

• What is this algorithm for converting strings into numbers called?

- by CodexArcanum
I've been doing some work in Parsec recently, and for my toy language I wanted multi-based fractional numbers to be expressible. After digging around in Parsec's source a bit, I found their implementation of a floating-point number parser, and copied it to make the needed modifications. So I understand what this code does, and vaguely why (I haven't worked out the math fully yet, but I think I get the gist). But where did it come from? This seems like a pretty clever way to turn strings into floats and ints, is there a name for this algorithm? Or is it just something basic that's a hole in my knowledge? Did the folks behind Parsec devise it? Here's the code, first for integers: number' :: Integer -> Parser Integer number' base = do { digits <- many1 ( oneOf ( sigilRange base )) ; let n = foldl (\x d -> base * x + toInteger (convertDigit base d)) 0 digits ; seq n (return n) } So the basic idea here is that digits contains the string representing the whole number part, ie "192". The foldl converts each digit individually into a number, then adds that to the running total multiplied by the base, which means that by the end each digit has been multiplied by the correct factor (in aggregate) to position it. The fractional part is even more interesting: fraction' :: Integer -> Parser Double fraction' base = do { digits <- many1 ( oneOf ( sigilRange base )) ; let base' = fromIntegral base ; let f = foldr (\d x -> (x + fromIntegral (convertDigit base d))/base') 0.0 digits ; seq f (return f) Same general idea, but now a foldr and using repeated division. I don't quite understand why you add first and then divide for the fraction, but multiply first then add for the whole. I know it works, just haven't sorted out why. Anyway, I feel dumb not working it out myself, it's very simple and clever looking at it. Is there a name for this algorithm? Maybe the imperative version using a loop would be more familiar?

• Applying the Knuth-Plass algorithm (or something better?) to read two books with different length and amount of chapters in parallel

- by user147133
I have a Bible reading plan that covers the whole Bible in 180 days. For the most of the time, I read 5 chapters in the Old Testament and 1 or 2 (1.5) chapters in the New Testament each day. The problem is that some chapters are longer than others (for example Psalm 119 which is 7 times longer than a average chapter in the Bible), and the plan I'm following doesn't take that in count. I end up with some days having a lot more to read than others. I thought I could use programming to make myself a better plan. I have a datastructure with a list of all chapters in the bible and their length in number of lines. (I found that the number of lines is the best criteria, but it could have been number of verses or number of words as well) I then started to think about this problem as a line wrap problem. Think of a chapter like a word, a day like a line and the whole plan as a paragraph. The "length" of a word (a chapter) is the number of lines in that chapter. I could then generate the best possible reading plan by applying a simplified Knuth-Plass algorithm to find the best breakpoints. This works well if I want to read the Bible from beginning to end. But I want to read a little from the new testament each day in parallel with the old testament. Of course I can run the Knuth-Plass algorithm on the Old Testament first, then on the New Testament and get two separate plans. But those plans merged is not a optimal plan. Worst-case days (days with extra much reading) in the New Testament plan will randomly occur on the same days as the worst-case days in the Old Testament. Since the New Testament have about 180*1.5 chapters, the plan is generally to read one chapter the first day, two the second, one the third etc... And I would like the plan for the Old Testament to compensate for this alternating length. So I will need a new and better algorithm, or I will have to use the Knuth-Plass algorithm in a way that I've not figured out. I think this could be a interesting and challenging nut for people interested in algorithms, so therefore I wanted to see if any of you have a good solution in mind.

• Hudson on debian lenny

- by Laurent
Hello, I installed Hudson deamon on one server (running on debian lenny testing) some time ago. All was working until I perform an upgrade. At this time Hudson isn't accessible at port 8080 (which is the default port used). I have looked for iptables problems, however port 8080 is open in INPUT and OUTPUT. Configuration file in /etc/default/hudson seems okay, I haven't touch it. And if I do a ps aux | grep hudson, hudson deamon is running. Update 1: What is really strange for me is that in /var/log/hudson/hudson.log I get no error : [Winstone 2010/02/10 17:10:04] - Control thread shutdown successfully [Winstone 2010/02/10 17:10:04] - Winstone shutdown successfully Running from: /usr/share/hudson/hudson.war [Winstone 2010/02/10 17:10:43] - Beginning extraction from war file hudson home directory: /var/lib/hudson [Winstone 2010/02/10 17:10:44] - HTTP Listener started: port=8080 [Winstone 2010/02/10 17:10:44] - AJP13 Listener started: port=8009 [Winstone 2010/02/10 17:10:44] - Winstone Servlet Engine v0.9.10 running: controlPort=disabled 10 févr. 2010 17:10:44 hudson.model.Hudson$4 onAttained INFO: Started initialization 10 févr. 2010 17:10:44 hudson.model.Hudson$4 onAttained INFO: Listed all plugins 10 févr. 2010 17:10:44 hudson.model.Hudson$4 onAttained INFO: Prepared all plugins 10 févr. 2010 17:10:44 hudson.model.Hudson$4 onAttained INFO: Started all plugins 10 févr. 2010 17:10:46 hudson.model.Hudson$4 onAttained INFO: Loaded all jobs 10 févr. 2010 17:10:46 hudson.model.Hudson$4 onAttained INFO: Completed initialization 10 févr. 2010 17:10:47 org.springframework.context.support.AbstractApplicationContext prepareRefresh INFO: Refreshing org.springframework.web.context.support.StaticWebApplicationContext@caa559d: display name [Root WebApplicationContext]; startup date [Wed Feb 10 17:10:47 CET 2010]; root of context hierarchy 10 févr. 2010 17:10:47 org.springframework.context.support.AbstractApplicationContext obtainFreshBeanFactory INFO: Bean factory for application context [org.springframework.web.context.support.StaticWebApplicationContext@caa559d]: org.springframework.beans.factory.support.DefaultListableBeanFactory@40d2f5f1 10 févr. 2010 17:10:47 org.springframework.beans.factory.support.DefaultListableBeanFactory preInstantiateSingletons INFO: Pre-instantiating singletons in org.springframework.beans.factory.support.DefaultListableBeanFactory@40d2f5f1: defining beans [daoAuthenticationProvider, authenticationManager, userDetailsService]; root of factory hierarchy 10 févr. 2010 17:10:47 org.springframework.context.support.AbstractApplicationContext prepareRefresh INFO: Refreshing org.springframework.web.context.support.StaticWebApplicationContext@4d88a387: display name [Root WebApplicationContext]; startup date [Wed Feb 10 17:10:47 CET 2010]; root of context hierarchy 10 févr. 2010 17:10:47 org.springframework.context.support.AbstractApplicationContext obtainFreshBeanFactory INFO: Bean factory for application context [org.springframework.web.context.support.StaticWebApplicationContext@4d88a387]: org.springframework.beans.factory.support.DefaultListableBeanFactory@6153e0c0 10 févr. 2010 17:10:47 org.springframework.beans.factory.support.DefaultListableBeanFactory preInstantiateSingletons INFO: Pre-instantiating singletons in org.springframework.beans.factory.support.DefaultListableBeanFactory@6153e0c0: defining beans [filter, legacy]; root of factory hierarchy 10 févr. 2010 17:10:47 hudson.TcpSlaveAgentListener <init> INFO: JNLP slave agent listener started on TCP port 59750 Update 2: What I get with lsof -i -n -P | grep hudson: java 28985 hudson 97u IPv6 2002707 0t0 TCP *:8080 (LISTEN) java 28985 hudson 99u IPv6 2002708 0t0 TCP *:8009 (LISTEN) java 28985 hudson 147u IPv6 2002711 0t0 TCP *:59750 (LISTEN) java 28985 hudson 150u IPv6 2002712 0t0 UDP *:33848 I don't know what I can verify. • NIC Bonding/balance-rr with Dell PowerConnect 5324

- by Branden Martin
I'm trying to get NIC bonding to work with balance-rr so that three NIC ports are combined, so that instead of getting 1 Gbps we get 3 Gbps. We are doing this on two servers connected to the same switch. However, we're only getting the speed of one physical link. We are using 1 Dell PowerConnect 5324, SW version 2.0.1.3, Boot version 1.0.2.02, HW version 00.00.02. Both servers are CentOS 5.9 (Final) running OnApp Hypervisor (CloudBoot) Server 1 is using ports g5-g7 in port-channel 1. Server 2 is using ports g9-g11 in port-channel 2. • Cannot connect to MySQL Server on RHEL 5.7

- by Jeffrey Wong
I have a standard MySQL Server running on Red hat 5.7. I have edited /etc/my.cnf to specify the bind address as my server's public IP address. [mysqld] datadir=/var/lib/mysql socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=mysql # Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x # clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package). old_passwords=1 # Disabling symbolic-links is recommended to prevent assorted security risks ; # to do so, uncomment this line: # symbolic-links=0 [mysqld_safe] log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid bind-address=171.67.88.25 port=3306 And I have also restarted my firewall sudo /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --destination-port 3306 -j ACCEPT /sbin/service iptables save The network administrator has already opened port 3306 for this box. When connecting from a remote computer (running Ubuntu 10.10, server is running RHEL 5.7), I issue mysql -u jeffrey -p --host=171.67.88.25 --port=3306 --socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock but receive a ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on '171.67.88.25' (113). I've noticed that the socket file /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock is blank. Should this be the case? • Add a small RAID card? Will it help overall stability and performance of my nine hard drives?

- by Ray
Hi, Will I get any extra genuine added performance and RAID stability if I insert a basic RAID card into a PCI-E x1 slot? I am considering the Adaptec 1220SA - 2 port SATA , pci-express (1x) , raid 0/1. Ok it only supports two SATA drives. Purpose is to help support the eight internal hard drives (1TB each), a DVD drive and an external e-SATA connected 2TB hard drive - by dealing with two of the internal hard drives. My current configuration of eight internal 1TB Barracuda (7200.12) SATA hard drives, one external 2TB SATA Western Digital Green Drive (e-SATA) and one DVD drive can already be supported by the Intel P55 & JMicron controllers on the ASUS motherboard : the Intel P55 (controls six HDD; configured as three x RAID 1), and the JMicron (controls two HDD as one RAID 1, as well as the DVD drive and the external SATA drive via the motherboard's e-SATA port (controlled by the JMicron)). Bigger picture details : I have an ASUS motherboard designed for the LGA1156 type processor and it includes the Intel P55 Express Chipset and JMicron. I am using the Intel Core i7-870 processor, and have 8GB DDR3 (1333) memory (four x 2GB Corsair DIMMs). Enough overall power. The power supply is more than sufficicient for the system. Corsair AX850. The system will never need the full 850 watts (future : second graphics card). The RAID card would provide hardware RAID 1 for two of the eight intrnal drives. It would either reduce the load on : the Intel P55 firmware RAID support, or replace the JMicron controller's RAID 1 set. I am busy installing the above configuration using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit as the OS. The RAID card is a last minute addition to the plan. Is it worth spending the extra R700 - R900 on the Adaptec 1220SA, or equivalent RAID card? I cannot afford to spend yet another R2000 - R3000 on a RAID card that would support many SATA2 hard drives, with a better RAID, example the RAID 5. My Issue & assumption : I am trusting that the Intel P55 chipset can properly handle six drives, configured as three * RAID 1. I am assuming that the JMicron can handle, using its RED SATA ports, one RAID-1 (two HDDs). The DVD drive connects to the JMicron optical SATA port 1 (white port 1). White port 2 is not used. The e-SATA connection is from the JMicron straight to, and through the motherboard - to an on-board (rear panel) e-SATA port. Am I being a little hopeful in only using the on-board Intel P55 and the JMicron? Is it a waste of money to install a RAID card that handles two SATA2 drives? OR Is it wisdom to take the pressure a little off the Intel P55? Obviously I am interested in data security, hence RAID 1, not RAID Zero. RAID 5 would be nice. The CPU, Intel Core i7-870 will provide the clout. Context to nine drives : I am using virtualisation with Windows 7 Ultimate. Bootable VMs. The operating system gets a mirror. Loaded apps gets a mirror. The current design data is kept in another mirror and Another mirror is back-up one and / or VM territory. Then the external 2TB drive (via e-SATA) is the next layer of data security and then finally, I use off-site data security. Thanks.

• Tomcat and ASP site under IIS6 with SSL

- by Rafe
I've been working on migrating our companies' website from it's original server to a new one and am having two different but possibly related problems. The box this is sitting on is a Windows 2003 server x64 running IIS 6. The Tomcat version is 5.5.x as it was the version the original deployment was built on. There are two other sites on the server one in plain HTML, another in PHP and the one I am trying to migrate is a combination of Java and ASP (the introductory/sign in pages being Java as well as many reports used for our clients and the administration pages being in ASP) First of all I can only access the site if I enter the ip followed by :8080 (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080). The original setup had an index.html file in the root of the site with a bit of javascript in the header that pointed the site to 'www.mysite.com/app/public' but if I try going directly to the site without the 8080 I get a 'page not found error' and the javascript redirector causes the same problem because it doesn't add the 8080 into the URL even though on the original site the 8080 wasn't present so I don't understand why it would need it now. The js redirect looks like this: When setting the site up I used the command line to unbind IIS from all of the ip's on the system (there are 12 ip's on this box) because I was led to believe Tomcat wanted to use localhost which wasn't accessible. I'm not sure if this was the right thing to do but I'm throwing it in for the sake of completeness. And actually, at this point trying to go to localhost from the server itself throws up a 'could not connect to localhost' error. If I go to localhost:8080 I get the tomcat welcome page. If I do localhost:8080/app/public I get the intro page to our website. So I'm not sure what I'm even looking at in this case, that is what the proper behavior should be. The second part of the problem is that if I do go to either the ip or localhost such as above (localhost:8080/app/public) and click on our login link it is supposed to transfer me to our login page yet instead I receive a 'could not connect' error and the url has changed to localhost:8443/app/secure. From my research I see that port 8443 is Tomcats SSL port and the server.xml alludes to it as follows: <Connector port="8080" maxHttpHeaderSize="8192" maxThreads="150" minSpareThreads="25" maxSpareThreads="75" enableLookups="false" redirectPort="8443" acceptCount="100" connectionTimeout="20000" disableUploadTimeout="true" /> I have an SSL certificate assigned to the site via IIS and was under the impression that by default Tomcat allowed IIS to handle secure connections but apparently something is munged because it's not working. There is another section in the server.xml that reads like this: <Connector port="8009" enableLookups="false" redirectPort="443" protocol="AJP/1.3" /> Which I'm not sure what it is for although port 443 is the SSL port that IIS uses so I'm confused as to what this is supposed to be doing. Another question I have is when does the isap_redirector actually come into play? How does it know when to try and serve pages through Tomcat and when not to? I've hunted around the 'net for an answer and have yet to find a clear dialogue on the subject. Anyone have any pointers as to where to look for a solution to all of this?

• The Collatz Sequence problem

- by Gandalf StormCrow
I'm trying to solve this problem, its not a homework question, its just code I'm submitting to uva.onlinejudge.org so I can learn better java trough examples. Here is the problem sample input : 3 100 34 100 75 250 27 2147483647 101 304 101 303 -1 -1 Here is simple output : Case 1: A = 3, limit = 100, number of terms = 8 Case 2: A = 34, limit = 100, number of terms = 14 Case 3: A = 75, limit = 250, number of terms = 3 Case 4: A = 27, limit = 2147483647, number of terms = 112 Case 5: A = 101, limit = 304, number of terms = 26 Case 6: A = 101, limit = 303, number of terms = 1 The thing is this has to execute within 3sec time interval otherwise your question won't be accepted as solution, here is with what I've come up so far, its working as it should just the execution time is not within 3 seconds, here is code : import java.util.Scanner; class Main { public static void main(String[] args) { Scanner stdin = new Scanner(System.in); int start; int limit; int terms; int a = 0; while (stdin.hasNext()) { start = stdin.nextInt(); limit = stdin.nextInt(); if (start > 0) { terms = getLength(start, limit); a++; } else { break; } System.out.println("Case "+a+": A = "+start+", limit = "+limit+", number of terms = "+terms); } } public static int getLength(int x, int y) { int length = 1; while (x != 1) { if (x <= y) { if ( x % 2 == 0) { x = x / 2; length++; }else{ x = x * 3 + 1; length++; } } else { length--; break; } } return length; } } And yes here is how its meant to be solved : An algorithm given by Lothar Collatz produces sequences of integers, and is described as follows: Step 1: Choose an arbitrary positive integer A as the first item in the sequence. Step 2: If A = 1 then stop. Step 3: If A is even, then replace A by A / 2 and go to step 2. Step 4: If A is odd, then replace A by 3 * A + 1 and go to step 2. And yes my question is how can I make it work inside 3 seconds time interval?

• How Can I Populate Default Form Data with a ManyToMany Field?

- by b14ck
Ok, I've been crawling google and Django documentation for over 2 hours now (as well as the IRC channel on freenode), and haven't been able to figure this one out. Basically, I have a model called Room, which is displayed below: class Room(models.Model): """ A `Partyline` room. Rooms on the `Partyline`s are like mini-chatrooms. Each room has a variable amount of `Caller`s, and usually a moderator of some sort. Each `Partyline` has many rooms, and it is common for `Caller`s to join multiple rooms over the duration of their call. """ LIVE = 0 PRIVATE = 1 ONE_ON_ONE = 2 UNCENSORED = 3 BULLETIN_BOARD = 4 CHILL = 5 PHONE_BOOTH = 6 TYPE_CHOICES = ( ('LR', 'Live Room'), ('PR', 'Private Room'), ('UR', 'Uncensored Room'), ) type = models.CharField('Room Type', max_length=2, choices=TYPE_CHOICES) number = models.IntegerField('Room Number') partyline = models.ForeignKey(Partyline) owner = models.ForeignKey(User, blank=True, null=True) bans = models.ManyToManyField(Caller, blank=True, null=True) def __unicode__(self): return "%s - %s %d" % (self.partyline.name, self.type, self.number) I've also got a forms.py which has the following ModelForm to represent my Room model: from django.forms import ModelForm from partyline_portal.rooms.models import Room class RoomForm(ModelForm): class Meta: model = Room I'm creating a view which allows administrators to edit a given Room object. Here's my view (so far): def edit_room(request, id=None): """ Edit various attributes of a specific `Room`. Room owners do not have access to this page. They cannot edit the attributes of the `Room`(s) that they control. """ room = get_object_or_404(Room, id=id) if not room.is_owner(request.user): return HttpResponseForbidden('Forbidden.') if is_user_type(request.user, ['admin']): form_type = RoomForm elif is_user_type(request.user, ['lm']): form_type = LineManagerEditRoomForm elif is_user_type(request.user, ['lo']): form_type = LineOwnerEditRoomForm if request.method == 'POST': form = form_type(request.POST, instance=room) if form.is_valid(): if 'owner' in form.cleaned_data: room.owner = form.cleaned_data['owner'] room.save() else: defaults = {'type': room.type, 'number': room.number, 'partyline': room.partyline.id} if room.owner: defaults['owner'] = room.owner.id if room.bans: defaults['bans'] = room.bans.all() ### this does not work properly! form = form_type(defaults, instance=room) variables = RequestContext(request, {'form': form, 'room': room}) return render_to_response('portal/rooms/edit.html', variables) Now, this view works fine when I view the page. It shows all of the form attributes, and all of the default values are filled in (when users do a GET)... EXCEPT for the default values for the ManyToMany field 'bans'. Basically, if an admins clicks on a Room object to edit, the page they go to will show all of the Rooms default values except for the 'bans'. No matter what I do, I can't find a way to get Django to display the currently 'banned users' for the Room object. Here is the line of code that needs to be changed (from the view): defaults = {'type': room.type, 'number': room.number, 'partyline': room.partyline.id} if room.owner: defaults['owner'] = room.owner.id if room.bans: defaults['bans'] = room.bans.all() ### this does not work properly! There must be some other syntax I have to use to specify the default value for the 'bans' field. I've really been pulling my hair out on this one, and would definitely appreciate some help. Thanks!

• Flex: convert VideoPlayer.currentTime to string "00:00:00:000"

- by numediaweb
Hi there! what about this one: I want to format the currentTime displayed by a videoPlayer component inside flex, something like : 8230.999 to something like 01:59:59:999 which is "hours:minutes:seconds:milliseconds" I trie different sets of codes but they can't get it to work because currentTime is nor a correct miliseconds time as it adds a floating 3 digit point to seconds; so instead of : 2000ms it outputs 2.000 something people like me just can't understand! thanx for any help :) ### UPDATE I still have problem with milliseconds. here's the current MXML: <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" minWidth="955" minHeight="600"> <fx:Script> protected function convert_clickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void { var val:Number = new Number(inPut.text); //inPut.text = 1000.001 //val = val * 1000; outPut.text = timeFormat(val); } public static function timeFormat(value:Number):String { var milliseconds:Number = value % 1000; var seconds:Number = Math.floor((value/1000) % 60); var minutes:Number = Math.floor((value/60000) % 60); var hours:Number = Math.floor((value/3600000) % 24); var s_miliseconds:String = (milliseconds<10 ? • Grid sorting with persistent master sort

- by MikeWyatt
I have a UI with a grid. Each record in the grid is sorted by a "master" sort column, let's call it a page number. Each record is a story in a magazine. I want the user to be able to drag and drop a record to a new position in the grid and automatically update the page number field to reflect the updated position. Easy enough, right? Now imagine that I also want to have the grid sortable by any other column (story title, section, author name, etc.). How does the drag and drop operation work now? Revert to page number sort during or after the drag and drop operation? This could confuse the user (why did my sort just change?). It would also result in arbitrary row positioning. Would the story now be before the row that was after it when the user dropped it? Or, would it be after the row that was before it? Those rows may now be widely separated after the master order sort. Disable the drag and drop feature if the grid isn't currently sorted by the page number? This would be easy, but the user might wonder why he can't drag and drop at certain times. Knowing to first sort by page number may not be very intuitive. Let the user rearrange his rows, but not make any changes to the page number? Require the user to enter a "Arrange Stories" mode, in which the grid sort is temporarily switched to page number and drag and drop is enabled? They would then exit the mode, and the previous sort would be reapplied. The big difference between this and the second option is that it would be more explicit than simply clicking on a column header. Any other ideas, or reasons why one of the above is the way to go? EDIT I'd like to point out that any of the above is technically possible, and easy to implement. My question is design-related. What is the most intuitive way to solve this problem, from the user's perspective?

• 12c - Silly little trick with invisibility...

- by noreply(at)blogger.com (Thomas Kyte)
This is interesting, if you hide and then unhide a column - it will end up at the "end" of the table. Consider:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> create table t ( a int, b int, c int );Table created.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1>ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> desc t; Name Null? Type ----------------------------------------------------- -------- ------------------------------------ A NUMBER(38) B NUMBER(38) C NUMBER(38)ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t modify (a invisible);Table altered.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t modify (a visible);Table altered.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> desc t; Name Null? Type ----------------------------------------------------- -------- ------------------------------------ B NUMBER(38) C NUMBER(38) A NUMBER(38)Now, that means you can add a column or shuffle them around. What if we had just added A to the table and really really wanted A to be first. My first approach would be "that is what editioning views are great at". If I couldn't use an editioning view for whatever reason - we could shuffle the columns:ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t modify (b invisible);Table altered.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t modify (c invisible);Table altered.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t modify (b visible);Table altered.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> alter table t modify (c visible);Table altered.ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1>ops$tkyte%ORA12CR1> desc t; Name Null? Type ----------------------------------------------------- -------- ------------------------------------ A NUMBER(38) B NUMBER(38) C NUMBER(38)Note: that could cause some serious invalidations in your database - so make sure you are a) aware of that b) willing to pay that penalty and c) really really really want A to be first in the table!
