• Windows PC's Intermittant Network faults.

  Hello everyone, im running into some issues with our client PC's (windows xp sp3 systems). this morning we ran into some problems with PC's not connecting to internal / external systems intermittantly. this would manifest as a problem connecting to any service, email, web, backoffice database systems etc. given a random amount of time be it a few minutes etc the problem would disapear and the pc would carry on as normal, some systems however have not been able to connect to certain sytems since the problem initally happened. im hoping for some suggestions / network diag advice really to help me locate the cause of this problem. all the clients are windows xp, connecting to a domain controller that is windows 2003 std this server also acts as a DNS server for us. we also have websense 7.0.1 installed on it to filter traffic.

• How do I make my play/pause keyboard button work correctly in iTunes 10 on Windows?

  First and foremost, I have mmKeys installed correctly. My iTunes works almost perfect while minimized to the tray. My problem is with the play/pause button on my Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000. When iTunes does not have focus (like it's minimized, or if it isn't the application I'm active in, like right now while typing this) the play pause button toggles twice. So, I'll push the pause button - and the song that is playing will pause, but a split second later will start up again. If the song is paused, and I push play, the song will immediately pause again. In order to get the key to work correctly, I must give iTunes focus, and then push the button.   So ill start from the very beginning. I'm working on a web conference were we are going to show about 12 videos for a total of about half a gig for all 12. Since all the participants are going to be watching (and also streaming/downloading) at once it was recommended we set up a server farm. So i have 4 servers that i am trying to network together. They are all running Microsoft Server 2008 and i have spent the last three days setting them up and now that its done i want to make sure its all ready to go. so i just want to be sure that everything is setup the way that i think it is. • Binding services to localhost and using SSH tunnels - can requests be forged?

  Given a typical webserver, with Apache2, common PHP scripts and a DNS server, would it be sufficient from a security perspective to bind administration interfaces like phpmyadmin to localhost and access it via SSH tunnels? Or could somebody, who knew eg. that phpmyadmin (or any other commonly availible script) is listening at a certain port on localhost easily forge requests that would be executed if no other authentication was present? In other words: could somebody from somewhere in the internet easily forge a request, so that the webserver would accept it, thinking it originated from 127.0.0.1 if the server is listening on 127.0.0.1 only? If there were a risk, could it be somehow dealt with on a lower level than the application, eg. by using iptables? The idea being, that if someone found a weakness in a php script or apache, the network would still block this request because it did not arrive via a SSH-tunnel?

• How can i use one Domain Controller to manage 3 separate small firms

  currently we have one Domain Controller that have 15 users and cup off services(hMailServer, IIS, DNS, Active Directory). Now the owners of the firm created two new firms which computers and networks are my responsibility. Now i wonder how exactly to join users in existing domain. Did you think that is a good idea to just include all computers and user from all firms under one domain or there is another solution ? Did some of you run into this kind of situation and what did you do ? ---Edit--- Brent, Dan thank for info guys. For now i will follow Brent advice until we get the new server witch we will virtualize and the old server will be our second DC on different location. Heck we even might think some Pay-as-you-go VPS solution for DC redundancy.

• Subdomain working externally only

  I am running a Windows Server 2008r2 web server with IIS. I have dev.domain.com and it works fine externally but when I try to access it from within the network it doesn't work. Is there a way to get this to work without changing the dns records for the whole network? I just have IIS Admin rights because our IT is done out of house. I can ask them to add it but I was hoping for another way. Thanks!

• ASA 5540 v8.4(3) vpn to ASA 5505 v8.2(5), tunnel up but I cant ping from 5505 to IP on other side

  I am having problems pinging from a 5505(remote) to IP 10.160.70.10 in the network behind the 5540(HQ side). 5505 inside IP: 10.56.0.1 Out: 71.43.109.226 5540 Inside: 10.1.0.8 out: 64.129.214.27 I Can ping from 5540 to 5505 inside 10.56.0.1. I also ran ASDM packet tracer in both directions, it is ok from 5540 to 5505, but drops the packet from 5505 to 5540. It gets through the ACL and dies at the NAT. • VPN Configuration

  How can I allow incoming connections on a Windows 7 machine that is connected to VPN? I have some services listening on certain ports that I have forwarded from my router. When the VPN is disconnected, I can connect to these services from my internal network as well as from the Internet without issue. When I connect my VPN however, I am still able to access the ports from my internal network, but not remotely. I think I need a split tunnel setup, and there is an option in the VPN settings to Use Default Gateway on remote network. I want this option enabled so all my traffic is routed through the VPN, but I want incoming connections to be allowed on my internal network IP from the Internet. Is there some hybrid way to set this up with routing?

  i have mac osx 10.6.3 (snow leopard) i have already setup mamp so it acts like a local server. but the next thing i wanna try doing is making it into a mail server where i can register an email locally maybe something like myname@myip or however its done. then having the ability to setup mx records, cname, and all that dns good stuff. this will only be for education purposes so that i can fully understand how it all works. what do i need to do? i read something about MailServeSnow but i cant get its domain to work , it must be down. would this be the best option? also would i need mac server or my os would be just fine? thanks

• How can I disable internet for a specific interface in Windows 7?

  I have two NICs on my machine, one which connects to my network and has my internet connection. The other connects to a buddy next doors network with his internet connection. I don't want Windows magically deciding which internet connection to use, I want it to use mine. I've had some success by blanking out DNS servers for his connection, but then I also lose hostname resolution on his network and I realize this doesn't solve everything 100%. How can I force Windows to use only my connection while avoiding the use of a router?

• Configure browser and VPN traffic

  Hello everyone. I've been having a few issues with my company's VPN server. The VPN is running on a Mac Server (10.6.x) and I'm also using a Macbook (10.6.5). I've been building specific programs to gather information from IPs, and to work on this while I'm at home I need to go through our VPN to access the network. Unless I send all traffic over VPN, I'm not able to hit those specific IPs. However, I'm unable to access the internet through my web browser when I send all my traffic over VPN. I was wondering if there was a way (besides setting up a split tunnel) that I could set up a web browser to go through my current wireless connection, as opposed to going through the VPN like the rest of my applications. Wether the browser be Chrome, Firefox, or Safari doesn't matter to me. Anyone else run into this issue and find a clever way to solve it? Thank you!

I'd like to split those archives: automatically - instead of generating mini-archives by hand; consistently - so that an archive can be extracted independently of another. For instance for a tree of 24GB which would be archived into 10GB I would get 3 archives, all of them < 4.7 GB and each of them being able to be extracted without the other 2. • It's possible to use google smtp for sending email from my server?

  Well, I am becoming crazy to let my email deliver to gmail/hotmail from my new ip. Last year, i had no problems with my past ip, but now my emails go straight to the spam folder of gmail and hotmail. I checked with mxtoolbox.com and i am not blacklisted, not an open proxy, rdns is configured the right way, SPF policy is present on the DNS. My spf is v=spf1 a mx ~all But, still, I am filtered. So, I am wondering: since gmail does not accept my emails, it's possible to use gmail smtp server to deliver all mails from my server? AFAIK, it will change all the "from" address, but maybe there is a way to not let it happen?

• Virtual Screen Splitter

  I am looking for a utility that will allow my screen to be split into two sections. I would like to do this so that programs can easily fill or get sized properly to one part of the screen. This way I can pretend that I have a separate monitor for working on my stuff, while my kids can watch something on the other side. In addition, this should help prevent any popups covering up their side of the screen. Although Windows 7 comes with ability to drag a program window to a side and it becomes sized to half of the screen automatically, this is insufficient for me. I would like to make sure that any programs I launch or any pop-ups that open up, do not block the other side of the screen, even for a short time. Also, I am not looking for a virtual OS solution, as in VirtualBox.

We are having trouble when JBoss replies it tells the clients to connect to the internal hostname, not the external one with which the initial connection was made. • Replacing old server with new but different hostname & same IP

  We have an old server 2000 and lots of users point to it by hostname and by its IP e.g \\server1, we have a new server 2008 R2 with new name serverlocation1 All folders and data have been sync'toy'd from the old server1 across to serverlocation1 each evening, the new server tree is exactly the same on the new server and all perms are correct. We need to make the new server the same IP as the old server1 as too many people access it directly via IP, and to ensure file and folder paths stay ok, anything \\server1\folder\file needs to go to \\newserverlocation1\folder\file etc I can change the old server1 name to server1-old & change IP and assign the old IP to the new server, but how do I force anything coming in for \\server1 to go to the new server and ensure anything referenced to the old server goes onto the new server ? I can CNAME but I need the new server to have the IP of the previous server so not sure if its straight forward etc..... point server1 to newserverlocation1 Then probably change DNS so that the OLD IP points to new hostname..... Any clarification appreciated.

• Getting IIS redirects proper for second HTTP site

  2x IIS sites on one host. I have mainsite.domain.com and secondsite.seconddomain.com. Both sites point to the same IP in public DNS. Nothing wrong with mainsite.domain.com, it redirects and goes to its own HTTPS site without issue. Going to secondsite.seconddomain.com without HTTPS, it re-directs me to the HTTPS mainsite.domain.com when I want it to go to its own secured site. It's odd that HTTPS secondsite.seconddomain.com still works as expected. Is there anyway to make HTTP of secondsite.seconddomain.com redirect to its own HTTPS entry?

• Cannot login to fresh Kubuntu installation as admin, but only as guest

  I just installed a fresh Kubuntu 12.10 on a machine beside Windows 7. After successful installation, I rebooted and wanted to login. But when I type my password and hit Enter, some command line screen shows up for the split of a second and then it thows me back to the login screen without any error message. It's hard to spot what the command line text says, but I couldn't see any error or something like that. Anyway, when I log in as guest (without password), everything works finely. Also, when going to a system command line (using Ctrl+Alt+F1), I can login with my account without any problems. Does anyone have a clue what is going on and how to fix it?

• When load balancing, must all copies of static web page be exactly the same?

  I am used to get answers for everything on the web, but not this time... Yesterday I enable Amazon DNS weight functionally to load balance 7 websites between two different IP addresses (split 50%-50%). Both servers run IIS 8.5, sites runs well on both sides. Today I found out that Google WebMasterTools is reporting fails error with file robots.txt, all close to 50% of access try errors. The robots.txt file is ok and accessible (even via Google testing URL page) on both servers. Lets say current version of static web pages are on the first computer and the updated version of the same web pages are on the second computer. Can it be the problem? When load balancing, can static web pages be slightly different from one host server to the other? Thank you for your help

• 3 Monitors on a Notebook

  I would like to use 3 screens on my Dell Inspiron 1720 So On the laptop built in screen have that as one, and then have 2 more screens. The catch is, that I want to play racing games with this set-up. So that my main screen is the focus area (the front window if you will) and the other 2 screens will be used for peripheral vision, on the side. The software that I use (LFS.net) does support multiple screens. However the notebook can have the main screen on, and another external screen. So I would need to split this "second" monitor output, to 2 screens, the one to the left of the main monitor, and the other one to the right. Is this possible? Is there perhaps a external card / docking station solution that could help with this? Any advice or ideas is greatly appreciated. Best Regards Rihan

• Uploading many large files to a remote server

  I am in the process of creating an offsite backup, and need to do a initial load of data. Currently, that's about 400Gb, give or take 10Gb or so... The backup system is producing files which are about 4Gb each, and has some other, smaller related files also. So, i need to transfer all 400ish gigs to a remote server, but how? What is the best method? I have full remote access to the server, so i can install anything i need to install. There are Windows, Linux and a Solaris VM running on the box itself, so any of those can be used there, and i have Windows and Linux at home. I have 2 internet connections in house, 10Mb/s uploading on each, so something that could potentially split the number of connections would be handy (kind of like GetRight, but in reverse... PutRight?).

• Mailing list with dynamically generated addresses

  I am trying to implement a dynamic mailing list from a database that changes quite often. Conditions: Postfix is the MTA Email addresses are in a MySql Database Postfix only allows senders whose emails are in that database (via smtpd_sender_restrictions) Cron job extracts the current emails from the database nightly and puts them into an alias file, then runs postalias on it. This works well, but since the sender remains the same, many domains are rejecting the email since my server is not a DNS listed mail server for the sender's domain. So, I either have to find a way to re-write the outgoing address as "listserv@mydomain" or find some mailing list package that will use database-retrieved emails (either queried directly or in a flat file) as the subscriber list, with that list replaced daily. I've tried Sympa and am pretty much ready to give up on it - it's a nightmare to get working right - but that's the only open source listserver that I have seen that works with dynamic mail lists. Whilst reading the many various ways to do this, I came across tools for making a virtual machine out of a hardware installation. I think this might make managing my server easier in the future if I run it as a virtual machine. Also, I will be able to easily split responsibilities of my server, for example running MySQL on a separate virtual machine hosted on the same physical machine. Is it a good idea to install my production server as a virtual machine inside another thin server installation? What are the pros/cons and pitfalls?

• mod hosts file, connect to joomla on remote server

  I've just acquired an account on a remote server with Joomla installed. I was instructed to add xxx.xx.xxx.xx name.ca www.name.ca to the hosts file which I found in /private/etc/ . I had to su to my admin account and use sudo to mod file and found that hosts is also found in /etc/ though it is apparently the same file. I attempted to flush the the DNS cache using dscacheutil -flushcache and then launched Safari and entered address xxx.xx.xxx.xx/administrator but got a 404 error. Joomla was set up for me by the server owner and accessed from his Windows laptop to demonstrate so I know it should work but no go here. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?
