• SQL Server 2008, Books Online, and old documentation...

  [I have no idea if stackoverflow really is right right place for this, but don't know how many devs on here run into msi issues with SQL Server; suggest SuperUser or ServerFault if folk think it's better on either of those] About a year ago, when we were looking at moving our codebase forward and migrating to SQL Server 2008, I pulled down a copy of Books Online from the MSDN. Reviewed, did background research, fed results upstream, grabbed Express and tinkered with that. Then we got the nod to move forward (hurrah!) this past couple of weeks. So armed with Developer Edition, and running through the install, I've since found out I've zapped the Books Online MSI, no-ones got a copy of it, and Microsoft only have a later version (Oct 2009) available, so damned if I can update my SQL Server fully and properly... {mutter grumble}. Does anyone know if old versions of Books Online are available for download anywhere? Poking around the Microsoft download centre can't find it, neither is my google-fu finding it. For reference, I'm looking for SQLServer2008_BOL_August2008_ENU.msi ... This may just be a case of good ol' manual delete the files and (try) and clean up the registry :-(

• Cryptography for P2P card game

  I'm considering writing a computer adaptation of a semi-popular card game. I'd like to make it function without a central server, and I'm trying to come up with a scheme that will make cheating impossible without having to trust the client. The basic problem as I see it is that each player has a several piles of cards (draw deck, current hand and discard deck). It must be impossible for either player to alter the composition of these piles except when allowed by the game rules (ie drawing or discarding cards), nor should players be able to know what is in their or their oppponent's piles. I feel like there should be some way to use something like public-key cryptography to accomplish this, but I keep finding holes in my schemes. Can anyone suggest a protocol or point me to some resources on this topic? [Edit] Ok, so I've been thinking about this a bit more, and here's an idea I've come up with. If you can poke any holes in it please let me know. At shuffle time, a player has a stack of cards whose value is known to them. They take these values, concatenate a random salt to each, then hash them. They record the salts, and pass the hashes to their opponent. The opponent concatenates a salt of their own, hashes again, then shuffles the hashes and passes the deck back to the original player. I believe at this point, the deck has been randomized and neither player can have any knowledge of the values. However, when a card is drawn, the opponent can reveal their salt, allowing the first player to determine what the original value is, and when the card is played the player reveals their own salt, allowing the opponent to verify the card value.

• PHP SDK Requires two logins...doesn't recognize first

  I am using the following code to authenticate whether users are logged in or not. While users can log in, they have to click the login button twice. Additionally, sometimes even after they click the log-in button twice, my "user info" part of the page (earlier in the page than the content) shows them as logged out while the actual page shows them as logged in. • Replacing repetitively occuring loops with eval in Javascript - good or bad?

  Hello stackoverflow! I have a certain loop occurring several times in various functions in my code. To illustrate with an example, it's pretty much along the lines of the following: for (var i=0;i<= 5; i++) { function1(function2(arr[i],i),$('div'+i)); $('span'+i).value = function3(arr[i]); } Where i is the loop counter of course. For the sake of reducing my code size and avoid repeating the loop declaration, I thought I should replace it with the following: function loop(s) { for (var i=0;i<= 5; i++) { eval(s); } } [...] loop("function1(function2(arr[i],i),$('div'+i));$('span'+i).value = function3(arr[i]);"); Or should I? I've heard a lot about eval() slowing code execution and I'd like it to work as fast as a proper loop even in the Nintendo DSi browser, but I'd also like to cut down on code. What would you suggest? • Use a table as container or not?

  I have created my entire website by using a main table, and having the content inside the table. Some ppl suggest this is wrong, and I would like to know what to do specifically in my situation. On my index.html I have a <table align="center"> and then all content in it. Now the content is in form of DIVS and they all have relative positioning, so they are relative to the table. For example: <table align="center"> <tr> <td> <div style="position:relative; left:14px; top:50px;"> CONTENT HERE... (Form, divs, images) </div> </td> </tr> </table> I have just gotten to the stage of browser compatibility. Without making any changes whatsoever, my website works perfect in FF, SAFARI, Chrome and Opera. Only trouble with IE. So for my Q, if you where me, would you change my layout and remove the tables, and instead use alot more css and alot more DIVS, or would you go with what I have? And please if you answer me, don't just provide me with the answer, but also a "why" that is... in other words, give me arguments and facts... Thanks

• Apache mod_rewrite : How to REWRITE (or whatever) child directories to parent?

  Actually i am trying to make a PHP MVC like application. A basic one. The current milestone i am reaching already includes: Basic RESTful Routing Means, if i type: www.example.com/items/book/8888 .. it properly just stays there as it is and i can already slice out the URL by slashes / and loads the responsible Controllers .... etc from the top single index.php file. I mean, so it is OK for the backend PHP. But the only problem is, it still CAN NOT process the REWRITES properly. For example, the CSS & JS are BROKEN as if i VIEW PAGE SOURCE of the page www.example.com/items/book/8888, the asset files are being called as: www.example.com/items/book/8888/css/main.css www.example.com/items/book/8888/js/jquery.js .. which really are PROBLEMS because in the code is like: <link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" media="all" href="css/main.css"> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.js"></script> So the question is: How can i use Apache REWRITE (or whatever approach) to make sure every ASSET FILES to be correctly being called from the DOCROOT. For example, if i am in the URL: www.example.com/items/book/8888 My ASSET FILES should still be called as: www.example.com/css/main.css www.example.com/js/jquery.js Or is there any other methods i need to follow? • Nested modal view controller gives strange message under iOS6?

  I am presenting a modal view controller from another modal view controller, and this worked fine under all iOS versions prior to iOS6. But under iOS6 I am getting the following warning message in the emulator: Warning: Attempt to present <UINavigationController: 0x14e93680> on <UINavigationController: 0x9fc6b70> while a presentation is in progress! The modal view controller is not shown if this warning appears.   Hi guys, I need a mock implementation of a class - for testing purposes - and I'm wondering how I should best go about doing that. I can think of two general ways: Create an interface that contains all public functions of the class as pure virtual functions, then create a mock class by deriving from it. Mark all functions (well, at least all that are to be mocked) as virtual. I'm used to doing it the first way in Java, and it's quite common too (probably since they have a dedicated interface type). But I've hardly ever seen such interface-heavy designs in C++, thus I'm wondering. The second way will probably work, but I can't help but think of it as kind of ugly. Is anybody doing that? If I follow the first way, I need some naming assistance. I have an audio system that is responsible for loading sound files and playing the loaded tracks. I'm using OpenAL for that, thus I've called the interface "Audio" and the implementation "OpenALAudio". However, this implies that all OpenAL-specific code has to go into that class, which feels kind of limiting. An alternative would be to leave the class' name "Audio" and find a different one for the interface, e.g. "AudioInterface" or "IAudio". Which would you suggest, and why?

  I try to understand how serializing/deserializing works in c++, so I want to do that without any libs. But I really stuck with that. I start with simple objects but when I try to deserilize a vector I understand that I can't get a vector without if I don't write it size before. Moreover, I don't know which format of file I should choose because if digits will be existed before size of vector I haven't chance to read it right. However it is only the vector but I also want to do that with classes and map container.   We would like to add a checkbox to each row on Rails index page to flag for the row. This checkbox is not part of the object (no checkbox boolean in database). How to retrieve each row on checkbox_index form and pass them back to controller? We are using simple_form for new/edit. • Form doesn't resize smoothly with a timer event

  I have a grid control at the bottom of my form and it can be shown or hidden if user wants to show/hide it. So one way was to well use AutoSize of the form and change the Visuble property of that grid to true or false,... But I thought let's make it a little cooler! so I wanted the form to resize a little more slowly, like a garage door! So I dropped a Timer on the form and started increasing the height of the form little by little while the timer ticks... so something like this when user says show/hide the grid: timer1.Enabled = true; timer1.Start(); and something like this on the timer_click event: this.Height = this.Height + 5; if(this.Height -10 > ErrorsGrid.Bottom ) timer1.Stop(); It kind of works but still not perfect. For example it lags at the very beginning, stop a like a second and then start moving it...So now with this idea in mind what alterations do you suggest I should do to make this thing look and work better?

• MySql: Is it reasonable to use 'view' or I would better denormalize my DB?

  There is 'team_sector' table with following fields: Id, team_id, sect_id, size, level It contains few records for each 'team' entity (referenced with 'team_id' field). Each record represent sector of team's stadium (totally 8 sectors). Now it is necessary to implement few searches: by overall stadium size (SUM(size)); the best quality (SUM(level)/COUNT(*)). I could create query something like this: SELECT TS.team_id, SUM(TS.size) as OverallSize, SUM(TS.Level)/COUNT(TS.Id) AS QualityLevel FROM team_sector GROUP BY team_id ORDER BY OverallSize DESC / ORDER BY QualityLevel DESC But my concern here is that calculation for each team will be done each time on query performed. It is not too big overhead (at least now), but I would like to avoid performance issues later. I see 2 options here. The 1st one is to create 2 additional fields in 'team' table (for example) and store there OverallSize and QualityLevel fields. If information if 'sector' table is changed - update those table too (probably would be good to do that with triggers, as sector table doesn't change too often). The 2nd option is to create a view that will provide required data. The 2nd option seems much easier for me, but I don't have a lot of experience/knowledge of work with views. Q1: What is the best option from your perspective here and why? Probably you could suggest other options? Q2: Can I create view in such way that it will do calculations rarely (at least once per day)? If yes - how? Q3: Is it reasonable to use triggers for such purpose (1st option). P.S. MySql 5.1 is used, overall number of teams is around 1-2 thousand, overall number of records in sector table - overall 6-8 thousand. I understand, those numbers are pretty small, but I would like to implement the best practice here.

• Any point in subclassing UIButton to create a custom looking button?

  I want to create a set of buttons that would work and feel very much like the Metro-style tiles that are available on Windows Phones. I would like to allow the user to tap them to access their underlying functionality (open a modal or something or that sort). I'm concerned that subclassing UIButton will not get me there. I need square corners and dynamic content inside the tiles themselves. The posts I've found around SO seem to suggest that subclassing a UIButton would not be a good idea for several reasons and that I should instead use UIView. That reply is from 2010, and I have no idea if in the 2+ years since then there have been considerable changes to how one would achieve that effect. Most users these days will have iOS 5.1+ if not 6.0 soon. Let's say I do go the UIView route. Should I implement UIResponder's touch events or should I instead go the UITapGestureRecognizer route? What's the better practice in 2012? Thank you!

• Integrating jQuery autocomplete with Google site search

  I have a bit of an odd situation. I have to implement search on a public facing website -but, that search must be able to search both web pages and have an autocomplete/suggestion functionality that comes from a list of terms that are in a DB table. So, I'm wondering a couple things: 1) should I be looking at Google search and jQuery autocomplete? 2) is there something else I should be looking at instead? 3) if this is the right path to be heading down are the enough pointers on implementation? The crux of my problem is that the terms that I need to use for the autocomplete/suggest functionality reside within a database and not on the webpages. So, I thought Google would be appropriate for search the webpages and that I could sort of fill in the blanks so to speak with these terms from the DB. I'm going to say that there are roughly 20-40,000 terms or so that need autocomplete. But that is really just a very rough guess -it could be less. I'm open to ideas and not really married to any particular solution. However, I will admit to liking the ideas of offloading the search to Google. I hear they have a good algorithm ;) Any ideas, thoughts, or leads are greatly appreciated!

• What is the best practice when using UIStoryboards?

  Having used storyboards for a while now I have found them extremely useful however, they do have some limitations or at least unnatural ways of doing things. While it seems like a single storyboard should be used for your app, when you get to even a moderately sized application this presents several problems. Working within teams is made more difficult as conflicts in Storyboards can be problematic to resolve (any tips with this would also be welcome) The storyboard itself can become quite cluttered and unmanageable. So my question is what are the best practices of use? I have considered using a hybrid approach having logical tasks being split into separate storyboards, however this results in the UX flow being split between the code and the storyboard. To me this feels like the best way to create reusable actions such as login actions etc. Also should I still consider a place for Xibs? This article has quite a good overview of many of the issues and it proposes that for scenes that only have one screen, xibs should be used in this case. Again this feels unusual to me with Apples support for instantiating unconnected scenes from a storyboard it would suggest that xibs won't have a place in the future but I could be wrong.

  Hi!! Im having a problem, Im trying to do a query... I remember that in the past I did something like this but today this query is returning nothing, no error, no data, just nothing... the query is something like this: SELECT field1, @variableX:=field2 FROM table WHERE (SELECT COUNT(fieldA) FROM table2 WHERE fieldB=@variableX AND fieldC=0)0 AND (SELECT COUNT(fieldA) FROM table2 WHERE fieldB=@variableX AND fieldC=4)=0; I also tried this query but it didnt work (also it gaves no error): SELECT field1, @variableX:=field2, @variableY:=(SELECT COUNT(fieldA) FROM table2 WHERE fieldB=@variableX AND fieldC=0), @variableZ:=(SELECT COUNT(fieldA) FROM table2 WHERE fieldB=@variableX AND fieldC=4) FROM table WHERE @variableY0 AND @variableZ=0; As you can see, what Im trying to do in the 1st query is use a variable in the conditions; in the 2nd query Im trying to create some variables and evaluate them in the conditions. At the end in the 2nd query the @variableY=1 AND @variableZ=0 but I dont know what the query returns an empty data What could be wrong here??? Any comment or suggest is welcome!!! thanks!!! Bye!!!

  This is about a utility i have happened to write which can parse through the properties of a data contracts at runtime using reflection. The input required is a look like XPath string. since this is using reflection, you dont have to add the reference to any of your data contracts thus making pure generic and re- usable.. you can read about this and get the full c# sourcecode here. Property-Parser-A-C-utility-to-retrieve-values-from-any-Net-Data-contracts-at-runtime Now about the doubts which i have about this utility. i am using this utility enormously i many places of my code I am using Regex repetedly inside a recursion method. does this affect the memmory usage or GC collection badly ?do i have to dispose this manually. if yes how ?. The statements like obj.GetType().GetProperty() and obj.GetType().GetField() returns .net "object" which makes difficult or imposible to introduce generics here. Does this cause to have any overheads like boxing ? on an overall, please suggest to make this utility performance efficient and more light weight on memmory

• How to use JOIN using Hibernate's session.createSQLQuery()

  Hi All, I have two Entity (tables) - Employee & Project. An Employee can have multiple Projects. Project table's CREATOR_ID field refers to Employee table's ID field. Employee entity maintains a list of Project. Using EntityManager following query works fine - "entityManager.createQuery("select e from EmployeeDTO e, ProjectDTO p where p.id = ?1 and p.creator.id=e.id"); But since I have the LAZY association relationship, I get error: "Could not initialize proxy - no Session" if I try to access Project info from Employee entity. This is expected and so I am using Hibernate's Session to create query as shown below. Session session = HibernateUtil.getSessionFactory().openSession(); org.hibernate.Query q = session.createSQLQuery("SELECT E FROM EMPLOYEE_TAB E, PROJECT_TAB P WHERE P.ID = " + projectId + " AND P.CREATOR_ID = E.ID") .addEntity("EmployeeDTO ", EmployeeDTO.class) .addEntity("ProjectDTO", ProjectDTO.class); But I get error like: "Column 'E' is either not in any table in the FROM list or appears within a join specification and is outside the scope of the join specification..." Can anyone suggest what will be the right JOIN syntax for such case? If I use ("SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE_TAB E, ........") - it gives other error: "java.lang.ClassCastException: [Ljava.lang.Object; cannot be cast to com.im.server.dto.EmployeeDTO". Thanks in advance.
