• SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

  I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site?   I have bought a cheap SSL certificate to run my website using NGINX. They sent me 4 .crt files: www_mywebsite_it.crt AddTrustExternalCARoot.crt PositiveSSLCA.crt UTNAddTrustServerCA.crt I have configurate www_mywebsite_it.crt and my .key on NGinx, but I also have to install the others .crt files. How can I do it? I'm using Ubuntu. (The problem is that I see correctly the SSL certificate using Firefox, Chrome and Opera but if I use Firefox 4.0.1 (the last) I get the default Firefox alert for insecure website.) Thank you!

• Is doing AB Tests using site redirection a bad practice?

  I'm developing hotels websites here in Brazil. When the site is done, we do an AB test with the old version to measure conversion and show to the hotel owner how good our site is. Due to the fact that I cannot put the old site inside the new one as a subresource (newone.com/old), currently I'm doing those AB test as follows: 1) I create 2 Google Analytics accounts, one for each site (old and new); 2) I put the GA tags in the old website pages (changing its possibly existent GA ID to the just created one); 3) I put an Javascript code that redirects the user to the old website (in a different URL and different domain) with 50% of probability. So I compare all the metrics, events and goals between those two GA accounts. How bad is it? How Google can interpretate the fact of being, sometimes redirected, sometimes don't? The experiment usually runs for 2 weeks. Is there any other alternative for doing this in a better way?

I plan to develop a Python program that sends the URL of a given website to a virtual machine where the dynamic execution of the eventual malicious JavaScript embedded in the website's page is monitored. My questions: Should my VM be Windows or Linux ? What if the malware damages my VM: is there a hint how to avoid that ? Or launch a new VM automatically instead ? If I use telnet client library to communicate with the VM: must I implement a server within the VM to deal with my queries or can I overcome this ? I am jut looing for hints, general ideas.   Is there any way someone could help me with building a website using google pages? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do much more than create a new page, and I have been up all night. I thought I knew computers and websites but apparently I need a refresher course. Please, if you can help, I would be most appreciative. -Sugarcube Edit: Seems this is too vague. But honestly, I don't even know where to begin with the way Google has it set up. I tried to set one up with a template and a layout, but the layout has pages that I did not create and that I don't know how to edit to make them suitable to my website. • Difference in stats on the same domain - seo related

  Recently i started to optimize my company's website. With a little help of market samurai. One of the adjustments was a www redirect to the prefered domain. We currently rank on #8 for our desired keyword with the domain without the www. If I add a custom url (our domain with www), we see a difference in stats BLP (backlinks to the page) {it's the website on top} Can anyone tell me how i could merge this so we might even rank better for our keyword? What I did so far: 3 weeks ago set the www.duo.be as prefered domain in GWT and put a 301 redirect in place so the duo.be gets redirected to www.duo.be Both domains are in GWT and both with www.duo.be as preferred domain. • Handle php out of memory error

  I have a Drupal based web site on a relative small vserver (512MB RAM). Recently the website begins to return php out of memory messages like this: Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 17039360) (tried to allocate 77824 bytes) in /home/... All php.ini memory limit parameters are set to off (-1). Propably the website has gained of complexity, content, etc. But I cannot interpret fine that message: Does that mean that the whole request has allocated 17MB(?) right now and cannot get 7MB(?) more from the OS. Has the web server spend all memory or has the OS no more memory to allocate ? I'm not shure if the memory overhead is coming from the web server or another service, because when I get the out-of-memoy message I can't get into the server with ssh. After a while all runs fine again.

• Best way to manage a changelog

• 2 Google Tag Manager containers = double triggers?

  I have a Joomla website with existing analytics done by a GTM tag and I need to add another image tag (1x1 pixel) from a separate GTM container. I set the event name for the additional GTM container to a different name from from the existing GTM container (default 'gtm.js') so that the new tag only fires under the specified event. The new container tested out fine in a blank HTML page, but when it is put in the website, it ends up firing twice. I know that because Firebug showed 2 1x1 pixels being loaded and I mark each request with a randomly-generated UID to distinguish them on the server side. I suspect this being caused by having multiple GTM container tags but want to check whether anyone has run into this problem before? As of now, I could not verify nor fix the double counting problem.

I've tried moving the entire site to the WWW directory, but then all my forms return "The HTTP verb POST used to access path is not allowed". Additionally, all the solutions I've found online only work on a page by page basis. Is there a simpler/faster way to migrate a large website containing many forms to IIS7? • Cannot access my own web page

  I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

Domain A was the one I had purchased when I first set up my website, but I didn't like it all that much and it was getting low ranks, and so I bought domain B and 301'd links from domain A to domain B. • Trying to retrace our SEO domain redirect strategy

  An SEO built a copy of my company's e-commerce site on another domain that contained our product's keywords in the name (i.e. as if Levi's built a duplicate site on bluejeans.com)...and then they referenced a lot of the images on the actual website from the other domain (as if Levis.com had images on it referenced like: img src="http://www.bluejeans.com/jeans-front.jpg"), but when you tried to reach the site by typing the name into the browser you would be redirected to the regular website, so the site wasn't really used for any purpose except I guess SEO. Since I didn't think this was doing anything GOOD for us at the time, I deleted the duplicate site and let the hosting on it expire, only to watch our search engine position rankings fall dramatically. Any ideas as to what was going on there? I want to get it back to understand its impact, but I don't know how it was set up. I contacted our host and they have no idea how it was set up. I suspect there was some sort of redirect in play, or something?

What applications should I install on the server? I need to transfer files to the server, I guess I would use FileZilla the same way I use it to upload files to my free website. But to have a username and password should I install an ftp server and create a user on Ubuntu? My website will send automated messages to users, so do I need to install a mail server as well?
