  I'm trying to run heathusf_v1.1.0.tar.gz found here I installed tcsh to make build_heathusf work. • Accessing network shares on Windows7 via SonicWall VPN client

  I'm running Windows7 x64 (fully patched) and the SonicWall 4.2.6.0305 client (64-bit, claims to support Windows7). I can login to the VPN and access network resources (eg SSH to a machine that lives behind the VPN). However I cannot seem to be able to access shared filesystems. Windows is refusing to do discovery on the VPN network. I suspect part of the problem is Windows persistently considers the VPN connection to be a 'public network'. Normally, you can open the network and sharing center and modify this setting, however it does not give me a choice for the VPN. So I did the expedient thing and turned on file sharing for public networks. I also disabled the Windows firewall for good measure. Still no luck. I can access the server directly by putting \\192.168.1.240 in the taskbar, which brings up the list of shares on the server. However, trying to open any of the shares simply tells me "Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.240\share You do not have permission to access ..."; it never asks for a domain password. I also tried Windows7 native VPN functionality - it couldn't successfully connect to the VPN at all. I suspect this is because SonicWall is using some obnoxious special/undocumented authentication system; I had similar problems trying to connect on Linux with the normal IPsec tools there. What magical invocation or control panel option am I missing that will let this work? Are there any reasonable debugging strategies? I'm feeling quite frustrated at Windows tendency to not give me much useful information that might let me understand what it is trying to do and what is going wrong.

  I have downloaded the Consolas font from Microsoft and installed it on my Windows Vista box. Consolas is also present on my Windows 7 box. When I use PuTTY, being sure to use the same settings on both machines, the Windows 7 box can render Unicode line/box drawing characters in Consolas, but the Windows Vista box cannot. What is the relevant difference between them? If Consolas has the characters, why would they only appear on one system, and not on the other? I am logging into the same remote host each time, and I have been very carefully checking PuTTY's settings to make sure that they're the same on both machines. How can I make Consolas render Unicode line-drawing characters on Vista?

I built a new Windows 8.1 machine, and I want to create my first system image backup of that machine to the same USB hard drive. Error Code 800706B3 This error appears before I can even attempt to connect to an SSRS instance. In addition to this problem, I'm not able to connect to my SSRS instance via SSMS on my desktop.   I'm running Windows7 x64 (fully patched) and the SonicWall 4.2.6.0305 client (64-bit, claims to support Windows7). I can login to the VPN and access network resources (eg SSH to a machine that lives behind the VPN). However I cannot seem to be able to access shared filesystems. Windows is refusing to do discovery on the VPN network. I suspect part of the problem is Windows persistently considers the VPN connection to be a 'public network'. Normally, you can open the network and sharing center and modify this setting, however it does not give me a choice for the VPN. So I did the expedient thing and turned on file sharing for public networks. I also disabled the Windows firewall for good measure. Still no luck. I can access the server directly by putting \\192.168.1.240 in the taskbar, which brings up the list of shares on the server. However, trying to open any of the shares simply tells me "Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.240\share You do not have permission to access ..."; it never asks for a domain password. I also tried Windows7 native VPN functionality - it couldn't successfully connect to the VPN at all. I suspect this is because SonicWall is using some obnoxious special/undocumented authentication system; I had similar problems trying to connect on Linux with the normal IPsec tools there. What magical invocation or control panel option am I missing that will let this work? Are there any reasonable debugging strategies? I'm feeling quite frustrated at Windows tendency to not give me much useful information that might let me understand what it is trying to do and what is going wrong.

• Reboot fails with "Invalid partition"

  My laptop can't reboot. Any time something restarts the laptop (e.g. to apply Windows updates, or Start Menu-Restart, etc), the computer sits at a black screen with the message "Invalid partition" displayed in console text. When this happens, I power off the computer, then power it back on, and it boots up fine. OK, now the history behind this: This laptop is a new Dell. The day I got it, I used gparted to reclaim 30 GB of disk space that had been allocated to a "recovery partition" in the middle of the laptop's primary drive. (I have DVDs for recovery and I didn't want to waste 30 GB of SSD space on recovery data.) So I used gparted to delete the recovery partition and resize the primary Windows partition to use up the new free space. As expected when resizing a boot partition, the computer would no longer boot. I used Windows Recovery Console to fix the boot process: FIXMBR C: FIXBOOT C: BOOTCFG /rebuild This worked fine and the computer boots up fine. But, as mentioned earlier, the laptop still can't reboot. Any idea on how to fix this without completely reformatting the disk and reinstalling Windows from scratch? It's Windows 7.

  Hello, I'm trying to sysprep a Windows 7 Professional machine, prior to grabbing an image for mass deployment on identical hardware, and am having a hard time getting sysprep to work (at all). I've created an XML answer file with WSIM, and have a basic setupcomplete.cmd file, but none of the configurations in the answer file seem to be applied. I've read technet articles and googled, and I still have no idea why this is happening. • How to bypass resume from hibernate

  I am attempting to resume a Windows Vista laptop from hibernate, but the resume process seems to be stuck in an endless loop in which Windows is repeatedly trying to read from the optical drive. When I press the Power On button on the laptop, the screen is black (not even the backlight turns on) and the following occurs in a loop: Five seconds pass and I hear the optical drive being accessed. (There's no disk in the drive, so it sounds like a short buzzing noise.) Two seconds pass and I hear the optical drive being accessed. Two seconds pass and I hear the optical drive being accessed. So it's three short buzzing noises in a row, over and over again. Eventually I have to abruptly power off the machine. I have tried inserting a data CD into the drive as well as a bootable CD (a live Linux distro boot disk). For both, the optical drive spins up for a bit, but stops after Windows decides that the disk is not what it is looking for. I have since lost the Windows Vista recovery DVD, but I don't know if inserting the recovery disk into the optical drive would have a different effect than the bootable CD. I have tried pressing F8 immediately after pressing the Power On button (hoping to enter System Restore), but that did not have an effect. Is there a special key sequence that will cause Windows to bypass resuming from hibernate, effectively ignoring hiberfil.sys?

• "Run As Administrator" on program right click failing and not launching program

  This problem lies within a relatively fresh x64 Windows 7 install ~4 weeks, but is also a problem I have seen on Windows Vista machines (x86 versions). Since the other day, any programs attempted to be launched via right clicking on a shortcut (.lnk)'s context menu and pressing - "Run As Administrator" for instance, in the Quick Launch/Jump List in Windows 7 has failed, screen has not dimmed, no UAC popup. In fact the program does not even load. There is no way around this unless I use the shortcut version from "All Programs" which appears to work, very strange? I have performed no major software installs, nothing out of the ordinary. Has anybody encountered this or know what would be causing it? • So I want to separate my Program Files from the hard disk with the other system files. What is the b

  So I am running Windows 7 as my only OS. I have two hard drives on my computer. The first one is a 74GB Western Digital 10K RPM Raptor. The second one is a 1TB Seagate Barracuda (couldn't remember if it was a 7200.12 or some other decimal after the 7200). The OS in installed to the Raptor and I am just using the Barracuda for storage. With this setup, in case you couldn't guess already, the Raptor fills up quick and I am constantly having to maintain file locations. And although it is nice to have that quicker boot time and program loading, the time spent maintaining the drive makes me waste more time overall. So I am looking for a way to try to keep it clear while still keeping up system loading speeds. A performance hit on games and such is easily acceptable and as long as I can guarantee a 5GB space on the Raptor, I can always just temporarily move the disc image there. So I am figuring that having games installed like Boarderlands and Mass Effect, as well as having large files such as linux distro DVD disc images in My Documents, I probably should be moving my personal files and Program Files directories to the Barracuda. I currently have folders on the Barracuda for this, but this means routinely copying files over and I can't really do anything with the Program Files folder that already exists. The best I can do is remember to designate the install directory of any program installation to the alternative install directory, which I can't seem to get to ever work right with Steam. With that in mind, is there a way that is not too drastic to let me just change some folders and system settings once and everything works fine afterwards for my setup? I have considered just reinstalling Windows 7 to the Barracuda but that would defeat the purpose of the Raptor except for running disc images off of. I am also heard a bit about being able to use symlinks to fix this, but I have also heard that symlinks in Windows are not necessarily the same and not as well supported on Windows. An example a friend mentioned was something about how if you have a symlink in Windows on a small hard drive to a large hard drive and the contents the symlink points to is larger than the small hard drive's capacity, then Windows will think the smaller hard drive is full. So is there a fix/workaround that will let me use symlinks across hard drives without the issues or is there a better solution I am not being told about, not mentioning, or not thinking of?

So far I have found a post telling me to add an entry to the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/AltTabSettings However, this reverts the alt-tab menu back to the Windows XP style, where you don't get window previews. • Extending QuickBooks Reporting with the QuickBooks ADO.NET Data Provider

  The ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks comes with several reports you may request from QuickBooks by default. However, there are many more that are not readily available. The ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks makes it easy for you to create new reports and customize existing ones. In this article, we will illustrate how to create your own report and retrieve it from the Server Explorer in Visual Studio. For this example we will show how to create an Item Profitability Report. Creating the report script file Step 1: Download the sample reports available here. Extract them to a folder of your choice. Step 2: Make a copy of the ReportGeneralSummary.rsd file and rename it to ItemProfitability.rsd. Then open the file in any text editor. Step 3: Open the installation directory of the ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks. Under the \db\ folder, locate the ReportJob.rsb file. Open this file in another text editor. Note: Although we are using ReportJob.rsb for this example, other reports may be contained in other Report*.rsb files. We recommend consulting the included help file and first locating the Report stored procedure and ReportType you are looking for. Otherwise, you may open each Report*.rsb file and look under the "reporttype" input for the report you are attempting to create. Step 4: First, let's rename the title of ItemProfitability.rsd. Near the top of the file you will see a title and description. Change the title to match the name of the file. Change the description to anything you like. For example: <rsb:info title="ItemProfitability" description="Executes my custom report."> Just below the Title, there are a number of columns. The Id represents the row number. The RowType represents the type of data returned by QuickBooks. The ColumnValue* columns represent all of the column data returned by QuickBooks. Step 5: To add additional ColumnValue columns, simply copy the last column, paste it directly below, and continue increasing the numerical value at end of the attribute name. From the ReportJob.rsb file, copy all of the input elements into ItemProfitability under the "Psuedo-Column definitions" comment. You will be replacing the existing input elements in ItemProfitability with inputs from ReportJob. Now that you have your own report file, we can move on to displaying the report in the Visual Studio server explorer. Accessing the report through the Data Provider Step 1: Open Visual Studio. In the Server Explorer, configure a new connection with the QuickBooks Data Provider. Step 2: For the Location connection string property, enter the directory where the new report has been saved to. Step 3: The new report should appear as a new view in the Server Explorer. Let's retrieve data from it. Step 4: You can specify any inputs in the WHERE clause. • IIS 7.5 401.3 Access Denied

  I am having this weird issue with IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 x64. I created a site in IIS and manually created a test file index.html and everything worked. When I try to do a deployment, I copy all the files from my local PC to the IIS server, try to access index.html (this is the proper deployed file) and getting 401.3 access denied error. I then try to manually recreate index.html and copy content into this newly created file and the page is accessible again... I just can't figure this out. So the issue is that IIS 7.5 can't server files that have been copied from other PCs. I tried to reset/apply permission settings to the copied folders/files but nothing has worked. Please help. Thanks! By the way, the files that I copied are just some html cutups i.e. generic html, css and image files, nothing special.

On our production site we've run into an issue that is specific to Internet Explorer 10. I am using jQuery doing an ajax POST to a web service on the same domain and in IE10 I am getting a 401 response, IE9 works perfectly fine. I should mention that we have mirrored code in another area of our site and it works perfectly fine in IE10. The only difference between the two areas is that one is under a subdomain and the other is at the root level. www.my1stdomain.com vs. portal.my2nddomain.com The directory structure on the server for these are: \my1stdomain\webservice\name\service.aspx \portal\webservice\name\service.aspx Inside of the \portal\ and \my1stdomain\ folders I have a page that does an ajax call, both pages are identical. $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: '/webservice/name/service.aspx/function', cache: false, contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8', dataType: 'json', data: '{ "json": "data" }', success: function() { }, error: function() { } }); I've verified permissions are the same on both folders on the server side. I've applied a workaround fix of placing the <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=9"> to force compatibility view (putting IE into compatibility mode fixes the issue). This seems to be working in IE10 on Windows 7, however IE 10 on Windows 8 still sees the same issue. These pages are classic asp with the headers that are being included, also there are no other meta tags being used.   One of the new features that came out with BI Publisher 11G and made me really excited about is the Interactive Viewer, which allows you to interact with the data presented in the reports and gain more insights about the data. You can have as many Table, Chart, Pivot Table, Gauge components in a single report and all of them are linked together so that you can click on any data point on the components such as Chart, Pivot Table, Gauge, and that would refresh other components in the report to reflect the selection without refreshing the whole report or page. No longer you need to navigate to another report or open other reports to see related data or drill down to the detail data. It’s all there within a single report. Well, sounds cliché but really this is a typical case of ‘seeing is believing’, so instead of reading I would love you guys to take a look so I’ve recorded the following video. • How to bypass resume from hibernate [closed]

  I am attempting to resume a Windows Vista laptop from hibernate, but the resume process seems to be stuck in an endless loop in which Windows is repeatedly trying to read from the optical drive. When I press the Power On button on the laptop, the screen is black (not even the backlight turns on) and the following occurs in a loop: Five seconds pass and I hear the optical drive being accessed. (There's no disk in the drive, so it sounds like a short buzzing noise.) Two seconds pass and I hear the optical drive being accessed. Two seconds pass and I hear the optical drive being accessed. So it's three short buzzing noises in a row, over and over again. Eventually I have to abruptly power off the machine. I have tried inserting a data CD into the drive as well as a bootable CD (a live Linux distro boot disk). For both, the optical drive spins up for a bit, but stops after Windows decides that the disk is not what it is looking for. I have since lost the Windows Vista recovery DVD, but I don't know if inserting the recovery disk into the optical drive would have a different effect than the bootable CD. I have tried pressing F8 immediately after pressing the Power On button (hoping to enter System Restore), but that did not have an effect. Is there a special key sequence that will cause Windows to bypass resuming from hibernate, effectively ignoring hiberfil.sys?

• Live Mesh starts exactly once on fresh Win7 Ultimate installation

  I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ulimate 64-bit on a formatted drive on a refurbed Lenovo PC, applied all 102 (!) windows updates, windows seems to be working fine. No quirks installing, no apps, no junkware, just straight, legal, Win7 Ultimate right from an unopened 2009 Microsoft box. Ok, breathe sigh -- Install Live Mesh (no messenger, no mail, no writer, no photo, none of the rest of the Windows Live freeware). Set up my shares, let it run overnight. watch MOE.exe in the Task-Manager perf pane to make sure it's all settled down. reboot. Ok, check that MOE is running and files are getting updated properly from other machines in the mesh. Great. HOWEVER -- when I try to launch Windows Live Mesh app from the Start jewel, I get a brief hourglass, then nothing. Reboot. Same story. result -- the shares I already posted seem to be synching properly, but I can't run the app, so I can't add and delete shares. The background process MOE seems to run, but I can't get the app going. btw, the reason I did this fresh install is I had exactly the same experience running Vista, so I wiped the machine hoping it would solve this nasty problem. Imagine my surprise! Will be grateful for clues, advice, etc, please & thanks!
