• Algorithm to make groups of units

  In Age of Mythology and some other strategy games, when you select multiple units and order them to move to some place, they make a "group" when they reach the desired location: I have a Vector with several sprites, which are the selected units, the variables tarX and tarY are the target x and y. I just want an example, so you can just set the x and y position and I can adapt it to my code. Also, I would like to ask that the algorithm calls "isWalkable" for the x and y position, to determine if it's a valid position for each unit.

• Deck from London UG 20110616 - Building a Reporting Brick capable of 1.2GBytes/sec and 80K IOs/sec for less than £2K

  The Reporting Brick concept is not really anything new, it starts the walk toward bringing the work Jim Gray and Tom Barclay et al did on CyberBricks up-to-date in terms of current kit. A reporting brick is simply a box built from commodity kit utilising commodity SSD, namely the OCZ IBIS drives to gain extremely high levels of performance for a fraction of the cost required for typical server and san installs today. I'll write up over the next few months as I work further on the concept, for now the deck attached summarises some of the ideas around it, the deck was presented at last nights London SQL Server User Group, I will be presenting it again in Edinburgh on the 29th June and other locations later in the year. • LINQ for SQL Developers and DBA’s

  Firstly I’d just like to thank the guys who organise the SQL Server User Group (Martin/Tony/Chris) and for giving me the opportunity to speak at the recent event. Firstly the demo’s were all done using LINQPad 4.0 which can be downloaded here: http://www.linqpad.net/ There are 2 versions 3.5/4.0 With 3.5 you should be able to replicate the problem I showed where a query using a parameter which is X characters long would create a different execution plan to a query which uses a parameter which is Y characters long, otherwise I would just use 4.0 The sample database used is AdventureWorksLT2008 which can be downloaded from here: http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/37109 The scripts have been named so that you can select the appropriate way to run them i.e.: C# expression / C#statement, each script can be run individually be highlighting the query and clicking the play symbol or hitting F5. I am having trouble finding and thinking of questions, especially in the technology realm. Technology (programming or general tech) questions are preferred. If you have never seen the game show, "Family Feud" involves two teams trying to guess the most popular responses to questions asked to a group of 100 respondents. The team must guess all the popular responses to get the points for the question. For example, if the question is, "What are the major tags in HTML 4.0?", the responses might be: P (64 votes) DIV (16 votes) TABLE (8 votes) BLINK (4 votes)

• "Virtual Machine Manager" and "Virtual Machine Server" setup manual

  Is there a manual available that covers the proper setup of a "Virtual Machine Server" with no GUI with an Ubuntu Workstation with a GUI and "Virtual Machine Manager" installed? Both are 12.04 version. I get the following error message: unable to connect to libvirt Verify that -The libvirt-bin package is installed -The libvirt daemon has been started -you are a member of the libvirtd group the package is installed for some reason starting the daemon seems to crash libvirtd start info: libvirt version 0.9.8 error: virExecWithHook:328 : cannot find 'pm-is-supported' in path: No such file or directory also qemucapsInit:856: Failed to get host power management capabilities So I guess I did not set the server up correctly. All manuals I found do not mention "Virtual Machine Manager". I only chose the packages to connect with SSH remotely and the "Virtual Machine Server" for the server installation. So I would like to find a manual that covers this combo or then covered only GUI machines that have both on the same machine, which will not really help with system performance as a hypervisor.

  Why it may be good to be confused: Mary Lo Verde’s Motivational Discussion at Oracle by Olivia O'Connell Last week, we were treated to a call with Mary LoVerde, a renowned Life-Balance and Motivational Speaker. This was one of many events organized by Oracle Women’s Leadership (OWL). Mary made some major changes to her life when she decided to free herself of material positions and take each day as it came. Her life balance strategies have led her from working with NASA to appearing on Oprah. Mary’s MO is “cold turkey is better than dead duck!”, in other words, knowing when to quit. It is a surprising concept that flies in the face of the “winners don’t quit” notion and focuses on how we limit our capabilities and satisfaction levels by doing something that we don’t feel passionately about. Her arguments about quitting were based on the conception that ‘“it” is in the way of you getting what you really want’ and that ‘quitting makes things easier in the long run’. Of course, it is often difficult to quit, and though we know that things would be better if we did quit certain negative things in our lives, we are often ashamed to do so. A second topic centred on the perception of Confusion Endurance. Confusion Endurance is based around the idea that it is often good to not know exactly what you are doing and that it is okay to admit you don’t know something when others ask you; essentially, that humility can be a good thing. This concept was supposed to have to Leonardo Da Vinci, because he apparently found liberation in not knowing. Mary says, this allows us to “thrive in the tension of not knowing to unleash our creative potential” An anecdote about an interviewee at NASA was used to portray how admitting you don’t know can be a positive thing. When NASA asked the candidate a question with no obvious answer and he replied “I don’t know”, the candidate thought he had failed the interview; actually, the interviewers were impressed with his ability to admit he did not know. If the interviewee had guessed the answer in a real-life situation, it could have cost the lives of fellow astronauts. The highlight of the webinar for me? Mary told how she had a conversation with Capt. Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger who recalled the US Airways Flight 1549 / Miracle on the Hudson incident. After making its descent and finally coming to rest in the Hudson after falling 3,060 feet in 90 seconds, Sully and his co-pilot both turned to each other and said “well...that wasn’t as bad as we thought”. Confusion Endurance at its finest! Her discussion certainly gave food for thought, although personally, I was inclined to take some of it with a pinch of salt. • No Wi-Fi after system reboot

  Something strange is happening... I've installed a Wi-Fi card into my Ubuntu Server 11.04 machine. To configure it I do the following: sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces add: iface wlan0 inet dhcp wpa-driver wext wpa-ssid "Sweet Home" wpa-ap-scan 1 wpa-proto WPA wpa-pairwise TKIP wpa-group TKIP wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK wpa-psk <A KEY> auto wlan0 then: $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart * Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not enable again some interfaces * Reconfiguring network interfaces... ssh stop/waiting ssh start/running, process 1522 ssh stop/waiting ssh start/running, process 1590 And my machine successfully gets an ip to my wireless adapter. But after reboot it doesn't get any ip in wireless network. To fix it I run /etc/init.d/networking restart again and all is fine again - it gets an ip. I understand that I simply should add it to my startup scripts to make it work properly, but maybe there is a better way to configure it?

• Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

  Sometimes you're searching for something online and you find an unrelated, bonus nugget. Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: ·         "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." ·         "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." ·         "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting. • Make Your Coworker’s Day in Ubuntu

  It can be difficult to express your appreciation for your coworkers in person – what if they take it the wrong way, or think you’re fishing for a compliment of your own? If you use Ubuntu in your office, here’s a quick way to show your appreciation while avoiding the social pitfalls of face-to-face communication. Make sure their computer is locked An unlocked computer is a vulnerable computer. Vulnerable to malware sure, but much more vulnerable to the local office prankster, who thinks it’s hilarious to make a screenshot of your desktop, change your background to that screenshot, then hide all of your desktop icons. These incidents have taught us that you should lock your computer when taking a break. Hopefully your coworker has learned the same lesson, and pressed Ctrl+Alt+L before stepping out for a coffee. Leave a carefully worded message Now is your opportunity to leave your message of appreciation on your coworker’s computer. Click on the Leave Message button and type away! Click on Save. Wait, possibly in the shadows If you sit near your coworker, then wait for them to return. If you sit farther away, then try to listen for their footsteps. Eventually they will return to their computer and enter their password to unlock it. Observe smile Once they return to their desktop, they will be greeted with the message you left. Look to see if they appreciated the message, and if so, feel free to take credit. If they look annoyed, or press the Cancel button, continue on with your day like nothing happened. You may also try to slip into a conversation that you saw Jerry tinkering with their computer earlier. Conclusion Leaving your coworkers a nice message is easy and can brighten up their dull afternoon. • SQL SERVER – Find Weekend and Weekdays from Datetime in SQL Server 2012

  Yesterday we had very first SQL Bangalore User Group meeting and I was asked following question right after the session. “How do we know if today is a weekend or weekday using SQL Server Functions?” Well, I assume most of us are using SQL Server 2012 so I will suggest following solution. I am using SQL Server 2012′s CHOOSE function. It is SELECT GETDATE() Today, DATENAME(dw, GETDATE()) DayofWeek, CHOOSE(DATEPART(dw, GETDATE()), 'WEEKEND','Weekday', 'Weekday','Weekday','Weekday','Weekday','WEEKEND') WorkDay GO You can use the choose function on table as well. Here is the quick example of the same. USE AdventureWorks2012 GO SELECT A.ModifiedDate, DATENAME(dw, A.ModifiedDate) DayofWeek, CHOOSE(DATEPART(dw, A.ModifiedDate), 'WEEKEND','Weekday', 'Weekday','Weekday','Weekday','Weekday','WEEKEND') WorkDay FROM [Person].[Address] A GO If you are using an earlier version of the SQL Server you can use a CASE statement instead of CHOOSE function. • curlftpfs mount disagrees with the fstab

  I am working with curlftpfs to mount a remote FTP directory locally in Kubuntu 12.04 64-bit. I have the following entry in my /etc/fstab: curlftpfs#ftp_user:ftp_password@ftp_server /mnt/nimh fuse ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noauto,user,allow_other,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 I have created the directory in /mnt with the following: |-> ll /mnt total 4.0K drwxrwxr-x 2 jim fuse 4.0K Jan 6 09:56 nimh/ My user does belong to the fuse group as well: uid=1000(jim) gid=1000(jim) groups=1000(jim),27(sudo),105(fuse) I am able to mount manually without issue but then the /mnt changes to: |-> mount /mnt/nimh |-> ll /mnt total 0 drwxr-xr-x 1 jim jim 1.0K Dec 31 1969 nimh/ However when I attempt to umount /mnt/nimh I receive: umount: /mnt/nimh mount disagrees with the fstab My /etc/mtab looks like: curlftpfs#ftp://ftp_user:ftp_password@ftp_server/ /mnt/nimh fuse ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,user=jim 0 0 I am able to umount the filesystem without issue if I sudo. Any idea what I'm missing in order to be able to unmount without having to use sudo?

  Hi I have a gps receiver bu-353 with usb interface i want to know how can i use it under ubuntu I ran the following command gpsd -n -N -D 2 /dev/ttyUSB0 I got the output as: gpsd: launching (Version 2.94) gpsd: listening on port gpsd gpsd: running with effective group ID 1000 gpsd: running with effective user ID 1000 gpsd: opening GPS data source type 3 at '/dev/ttyUSB0' gpsd: speed 38400, 8N1 gpsd: Garmin: garmin_gps Linux USB module not active. gpsd: speed 9600, 8O1 gpsd: speed 38400, 8N1 gpsd: gpsd_activate(): opened GPS (fd 6) gpsd: speed 4800, 8N1 gpsd: NTPD ntpd_link_activate: 0 gpsd: /dev/ttyUSB0 identified as type SiRF binary (2.687608 sec @ 4800bps) gpsd: detaching 127.0.0.1 (sub 1, fd 8) in detach_client gpsd: detaching 127.0.0.1 (sub 1, fd 8) in detach_client after this i started tangoGPS, which said no gps and no gpsd found

I have increased the font size to 400 percentage and for the same reason they are very large. You can adjust the font size which is convenient to you. • Adding additional users to Ubuntu server and configuring Samba

  I have installed Ubuntu Server 12.10 and during the install created a user for myself ben, I now wish to add a second user bill. I have an external drive that I have mounted to /media/storage and created a shared folder called Share, the owner of the folder is ben:ben, how do I grant bill access to the folder? I don't want to put him in the group ben. Once setup, I need to configure Samba & NFS, here is my Samba configuration [Share] path = /media/storage/Share read only = no public = yes writeable = yes force user = ben How do I give both bill and ben access to the share via Samba?
