• What are the best software/website UI design you have even seen?

  What are the best UI design in terms of usability and esthetics you have even seen? I mean both desktop software (of all OS) and website. My list: Picasa 3 - the way it organizes photos. Find-and-highlight-as-you-type in google Chrome. Dynamic search hints when entering something in the search box in Gmail. I'm not a Mac OS X user, but I have seen in most windows on the top toolbar there are both the icons and texts shown for each function, as apposed to on Windows I have seen many programs (MS Office included) have many small toolbar icons which you can hardly understand what they do until you hover the mouse on it for a while to see the hints (if any). The ability to search an setting in Eclipse IDE. the way to make 3D models in Google Sketchup. the way to label an email in Gmail. What are you list? Well, I couldn't resist to list some annoying UI design I have experienced and remember at this moment. IE on Windows server, when you visit the new website, you have to click many times to get it added to the white list before you can start browsing, IIRC, it's not fixed in IE 8 when that last time I used it on Windows 2008. The default search behavior in the File Explorer on Windows xp, that animated thing... the dialog that shows up when you are trying to save a plain text CSV file in Excel after applied some formatting options which does not compatible with CSV.

• Application runs fine when executed directly, fails as scheduled task (security issues)

  I have an application that loads some files from a network share (the input folder), extracts certain data from them and saves new files (zips them with SharpZLib) on a different network share (output folder). This application runs fine when you open it directly, but when it is set to a scheduled task, it fails in numerous places. This application is scheduled on a Win 2003 server. Let me say right off the bat, the scheduled task is set to use the same login account that I am currently logged in with, so it's not because it's using the LocalSystem account. Something else is going on here. Originally, the application was assigning a drive letter to the input folder using WNetGetConnectionA(). I don't remember why this was done, someone else on our team did that and she's gone now. I think there was some issue with using the WinZip command line with a UNC path. I switched from the WinZip command line utility to using SharpZLib because there were other issues with using the WinZip command line. Anyway, the application failed when trying to assign a drive letter with the error "connection already established." That wasn't true and even after trying WNetCancelConnection(), it still didn't work. Then I decided to just map the drive manually on the server. Then when the app calls Directory.Exists(inputFolderPath) it returns false, even though it does exist. So, for whatever reason, I cannot read this directory from within the application. I can manually navigate to this folder in Windows Explorer and open files. The app log file shows that the user executing it on the schedule is the user I expect, not LocalSystem. Any ideas?

On mouseup, the div then starts resizing "cooldiv" on mousemove without any mousedown required, until a further click of the mouse. These problems don't show up in Internet Explorer.

• TFS: Choose which workspace to add a solution too.

  I have a solution which I developed in VS2008 and which I am trying to add to Source Control (TFS 2010, though the issue happened in TFS 2008 as well). I have several TFS workspaces on my computer and I have access to several Team Projects. When I right click the solution in my Solution Explorer and choose the "Add Solution to Source Control" option I am never given an option of choosing which Workspace or which Team Project to add the existing solution too. VS2008 then proceeds to add it to the same team project every time. I have tried selecting an alternate workspace/team project in every window where I can see an option for it but it always adds it back to the same one. I even tried changing the name of my new workspace so that alphabetically it was the first thinking that it might be somehow related to that... no luck. I then tried goign to the Change Source Control window where you can add/remove bindings on a solution/project but that window also defaults to the same Team Project as trying to add the solution directly does... Any help would be greatly appreciated with this, maybe I'm just missing something?

  Hi. I have this script. This determines if there is a flash player installed in the browser, it redirects the browser to a flash website. if not, then it opens a non-flash website. • winUserControl in VS2010 - properties are not visible in designer

  I have a problem with (I suppose) my Visual Studio 2010 Express environment: when I design my own UserControl, in Properties grid I can't see public properties of that control. They are however visible in the project, that reference this control. As it's Express Edition, I create new empty project, then add new UserControl to it. When I reference and use this control in another project, there is an access to it's properties. I've tried to competly reinstall VS 2010 environment, including SP1, but with no success. Do you have any idea what can be wrong? • FireFox: strange behavior on submiting a form

  Can anyone help with this strange form submiting in FireFox? So this form should be submitted after pushing "go to submit" button. There is an onclick event on the button that should submit form through JavaScript. In the form there is another button "test" without any onclick event. Following the script, the form should be submitted only after pushing the "go to submit" button, but it submits even pushing at "test" button. In the Internet Explorer it works well! But this stupid FireFox browser behaves different.   Hi, I'm running a 64-bit multi-threaded program on the windows server 2003 server (X64), It run into a case that some of the threads seem to be blocked in the malloc or free function forever. We did have some threads using virtualalloc but in a way that commit the memory in the call, and these threads are not blocked. m_pBuf = VirtualAlloc(NULL, m_size, MEM_COMMIT, PAGE_READWRITE); ...... VirtualFree(m_pBuf, 0, MEM_RELEASE); This looks strange to me, seems a lot of virtual space is reserved but not committed, and malloc/free is blocked by lock. I'm guessing if there's any corruptions in the memory/object, so plan to turn on gflag with pageheap to troubleshoot this. Does anyone has similar experience on this before? Could you share with me so I may get more hints? Thanks a lot!

• Why does mobile first responsive design tend to not use max-width queries alongside the min-width queries?

  First off, I understand the basic principles behind mobile first responsive web design, and totally agree with them. But one thing I don't understand: In my experience, not all styles for small screens can be used for the larger version of a website. For example, usually smaller versions tend to have larger clickable areas, hamburger navigation, etc. So I sometimes have to override these specific styles, aside from just progressively enhancing the base styles. So I was wondering: why is max-width rarely mentioned (or used) in the context of mobile-first responsive web design? Because it looks like it could be used to isolate styles for smaller screens that are not useful for larger screens, and would thus prevent unnecessary duplication of code. A quote which mentions min-width as typically mobile-first, but not max-width: Mobile first, from a coding perspective, means that your base style is typically a single-column, fully-fluid layout. So, I'd like to ask you guys this question again. I have type=input in my form, and a submit button. If I type garbage input into the textbox (like the text "abc") in the file control's textbox, and click the submit button, the form is not submitted to the server. AND, no feedback is given to the user. Instead of this "Is-the-submit-button-broken?" behavior, is there a way I could notify the user that the file does not exist? (I am aware this is not possible, except with ActiveX, but I don't want to go into that) My client wants to hide the textbox of the file control, but I'm not sure if this is a good design. What do you guys suggest? (If it makes any difference, I am also using this jquery plugin: http://www.fyneworks.com/jquery/multiple-file-upload/)

For example, I want to show "Bar" for the button with value="1". Is this possible? I've considered using the <button> tag, like this: <button name="foo" value="1">Bar</button> The problem with using <button> (from w3schools): If you use the element in an HTML form, different browsers may submit different values. Internet Explorer, prior version 9, will submit the text between the and tags, while other browsers will submit the content of the value attribute. Use the element to create buttons in an HTML form. • How can I dial GPRS/EDGE in Win CE

  Hello all. I am developing application in python on Windows CE which needs connection to the internet (via GPRS/EDGE). When I turn on the device, the internet connection is not active. It becomes active if I open internet explorer. I would like to activate connection in my application. I'm trying to do this with RasDial function over ctypes library, but I can't get it to work. Is this the right way or I should do something else? Below is my current code. The ResDial function keeps returning error 87 – Invalid parameter. I don't know anymore what is wrong with it. • iMX31 dependencies?

  Dear all I am beginner in an silverlight application. So at first i looked on demo application which is provided by wince 6.0 r3 at location WINCE600\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\DEMOS\XAMLPERF - this contains c++ code and WINCE600\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\FILES\XAMLPERF - this contains xaml file with the images Now before running this application in an emulator. I at first proceeded with the following: I have first taken my workspace went to catalog item and added "Silverlight for Windows Embedded" from the drop down menu of an catalog item Then right clicked on solution explorer and choosed on properties and under configuration in drop down menu i have selected environment variables where i have added new variable called "sysgen_samplexamlperf" and assigned value as 1 for that variable. Now after rebuiding the application, i have dumped the image into emulator and i found that at desktop of device emulator i can see the exe file to which i run and i can see the application is working fine with 3d effects. Now same thing i proceeded in iMX31 hardware and i was not able to see the application running in a proper manner as it was performing in an emulator. So now what i feel is that there be any dependency when we run the application on hardware. So what can be the dependency? Also in this location "WINCE600\PUBLIC\COMMON\OAK\FILES\XAMLPERF" the images are in png format. So is there any dependency with an image format? Thanks and regards

• Visual Studio internal project references not always working

  I am using Visual Studio and a solution with 10 or so projects in (mostly VB, some C#) which have various dependencies set up. Usually when I compile the solution it works fine. Occasionally when I do it I get a build error saying that one of the projects referenced is the wrong version (I think always the same one, possibly may be two that can cause problems). In this case going to the solution explorer and right clicking on the mentioned project and saying "rebuild" followed by another full build makes it work fine. I assume there is something set up wrong somewhere but I didn't set up the solution myself initially and a quick look through doesn't show anything immediately wrong. It feels like there is some kind of race condition, that VS is internally setting the version number of the project it needs before that project has been rebuilt and thus gets it wrong or something like that but I'm sure VS should handle all this sort of thing properly. Can anybody please suggest places that I could check for whether this has been correctly set up... And I should finally note that since I don't have reliable repro of this I may not be able to respond to questions too quickly. For example the obvious one of "Could you give the exact error message" will have to wait since I didn't think to copy it this morning, it was only after I cleared it up with the above steps that I thought to post here. Similarly any solutions may take a while to confirm.

• Dijit.Dialog irregular behaviour of scroll bar making dialog box unusable

  I use a dojo dialog box to display a page pulled from another part of the site. The page being pulled is long - so I use the css attribute: `max-height: 900px; overflow:auto; To make sure it displays properly. For a long page, it displays a 900px high dialog box with a scrollbar down the right hand side side. However the scrollbar is going up to the dialog box title and shifting the close box icon to the left. In internet explorer, when a user moves his mouse of the close box icon, it moves to the right. If you move your mouse to the right it moves left - so you can never actually close the box with the icon. I have tried clearing the content in the box and just making it very long, and the same thing still happens. Oddly enough, if I close the window using esc and click pull up the dialog box again, it works fine. Any way I can make it display properly at all times. I am using Dojo version 1.3. Thanks

• Visual Studio 2010 is not allowing me to debug my code

  So, this interesting issue has been plaguing me for the past couple of hours. Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate no longer attaches the debugger and lets me debug my code. If I use the built in development server, then everything works fine. If I switch to Use Local IIS Web Server (http://localhost/), then all it does it attach to w3wp.exe, but no DLLs or PDBs are loaded for anything. I can go to Debug Windows Modules, and literally nothing is loaded in this window. Conversely, when using the built in development server, the Modules window displays all the DLLs and shows that the symbols for my DLLs have been loaded. Something is obviously amiss. The VS installation is completely bone stock. In IIS, my website is configured with ASP.NET 2.0 (because no 3.5 exists to select from the drop down), along with read / log visits / index this resource options checked on the "Home Directory" tab. Some of my failed ideas: 1) If I attach to process on the iexplore.exe instance where the website is displayed, it loads Internet Explorer's DLLs, but not mine. 2) I've restarted the computer multiple times 3) I've invoked devenv.exe /resetuserdata once 4) I've confirmed that every project is indeed set to debug and not release. 5) Deleted all \bin contents and rebuilt the solution. 6) Deleted entire solution and repulled from Source Control. Can someone tell me what is wrong with this thing? I'm going to have an aneurism from the headache this is causing me.

• CSS Differences Between IE and FF

  I hope I'm not breaking any rules by asking a question that pertains to a project I'm working on. If you view my page here and view it in Firefox and again in Internet Explorer, the width of the main content boxes differs. In Firefox, everything aligns perfectly with the advertisement at the top of the page, but in IE, the width of the content boxes seems to fall short by about 20 or so pixels. My question is obvious by now, but what is causing the width in IE to fall short, and what would a simple solution be? If I happen to be breaking the rules by asking a question that is not generic enough to benefit others, then allow me to rephrase it; what would be the best approach to solving visual differences between browsers? Should I use a separate CSS file for IE, or is there a way to define lines in my CSS file that only get rendered by a specific browser? It would be best if someone could provide me with the necessary CSS to align things properly, but I would be more than happy to learn about how to make the CSS dynamic (if that's possible). • Strange offset space between <button> as parent container and <div> as child.

  I need to decorate a standard html button. The base element I took <button> instead of <input>, cos I decided that the element must be a parent container. And there is child element <div> in it. This <div> element will be been the core element for decoration, and should occupy the entire space of the parent element - button. <button> <div>*decoration goes here*</div> </button> And within Cascading Style Sheets it might be looks like this: css button { margin: 0; border: 0; padding: 0; width: *150*px; height: *50*px; position: relative; } div { margin: 0; border: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; background: *black*; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; } html <button type="button"> <div>*decoration goes here*</div> </button> So, Opera(10) is doing well, webkits Chrome(6) and Safari(4) is doing also well, but Internet Explorer(8) is bad - DOM Inspector shows some strange Offset space in top and left, FireFox(3) is also bad - DOM Inspector shows that <div> get some negative value in css-property right: and bottom:. Even if this property will set to zero(0) DOM-Inspector still shows same negative value. I almost broke my brain. Help me, solve this problem, please!

• Time out when creating a site collection

  I am trying to create a site collection programmatically. It has worked for about 6 months, but after the servers have been updated (various patches) it doesn’t work anymore (we have 3 servers: 1 development, 1 test, 1 production). It is still working in my development environment which hasn’t been updated, but not on the two others. I don’t receive any error messages, it just hangs at the code that is supposed to add the site collection (see code below). I am using Windows Server 2003 R2 and Sharepoint 2007 (version 12.0.0.6421 ). It doesn’t give me any errors, it just hangs until Internet Explorer comes with a “request timed out” response. If I try and debug the code, the code just stops there and nothing happens. • Setting Icon for wpf application (VS 08)

AFAIK, I need potentially 3 images? 1 image is the actual image in explorer when clicking on the .exe (thumbnail for the exe) 1 image (tiny) in the top left corner (16 x 16? Not entirely sure) 1 image in the start menu dock, to the left of the app (maybe 32x32? again not sure) So thats fine. Now I have selected an Icon. How do I use it in one of above situations? I have tried adding it in resources, nothing seems to happen. Following that first SO solution, "First go to Resource View (from menu: View -- Other Window -- Resource View). Then in Resource View navigate through resources, if any. If there is already a resource of Icon type, added by Visual Studio, then open and edit it. Otherwise right-click and select Add Resource, and then add a new icon." The resource view is empty, and I cannot right click in this view. If I right click on the solution properties resources I can add the icon image, but it doesn't show in either of the locations listed above. (or anywhere that I can see) What am I doing wrong?

• Vista seems to prevent .net from reading/updating file attributes.

  Hello everyone! The following function copies a file from Source & Path to Dest & Path, normally setting file attributes to normal before copying. Yet, a user of my app has reported it to fail when copying readonly files, returning a permissions-related error. The user is however running the code as administrator, and the error happens - quite strangely - on the SetLastWriteTimeUtc line. Although the code reports that the file attributes are set to normal, windows explorer shows that they are set to read only.
