  I am about to embark on an exquisite journey. I have applied for an event, where in span of 48 straight hours, strangers meet, throw around some great ideas, decide on teams, and make a working prototype of IT project. All within 48 hours. I anticipate, that this will be very skill and ability intensive experience, and I want to be prepared. Since i will need to develop my part of the code quickly, I have a following question: What would be the most needed skills for these 48 hours? I do know, that things like proper documentation, version control and such are pretty important for a full fledged application/program/web development, but for this span of frantic coding? Background: I am a web developer, so answers applicable to web development would be more appreciated than others.

• Is there a way to group 2 or 3 gui windows so that they don't get lost behind other open windows?

  For instance floating panels and main window in Gimp are independent windows. If I change focus to a full window (e.g. Firefox by doing Alt-Shift) and go back to the main Gimp window I don't get back the floating panels also (I have to change to them as well in order to see them). It would be great if the 3 windows can be "tied" (or linked) together in order that they don't get lost behind other open windows when I change back to (make active window) any of them? I think this configuration (if it exists) should show itself more obviously in the gnome environment. This question seems to address the same problem but it doesn't seem to be accurately answered.

• Meta Description or Title For Post Contents

  I have a site that has posts without titles. You can think of them as being a lot like Twitter tweets. Should I put the post contents in the meta title tag or the description tag? If I put the post contents in one of the tags what should I put in the other? My challenge is that we have very short amounts of content with no titles. I want to avoid having too many duplicate titles or descriptions. We have things like user name, full name, date, etc.

• Blogger Template: How is inline style tag getting attached to img? [migrated]

  Examining a blogger template's img tag (data:post.thumbnailUrl) i've approached a mystery. An inline style tag controlling the width, margin and heigh perimeters are getting added to my img element. They are auto adjusting the images ratio to fit a smaller size. But I can't figure-out where this style tag script lives and how it's happening in my template. My template has no special javascript or jquery scripts. The full size images in the single posts page don't have this style tag. • Any way for ubuntu to use more than one core of i7 cpu on my Asus laptop?

• Applications Menu disappeared [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Applications Menu disappeared I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, classic desktop without effects. Once the indicator-applet-complete (right part of the top panel) had disappeared. I found how to fix it: Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, then "Add to the Panel", where choose "Indicator Applet Complete" to add. Now, the left part of the top panel (Applications Menu) has disappeared! If I do Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, I can add only individual Menu sections like Internet, Office, Settings etc. But how to get back the full Menu as it ought to be?

• Create an Asynchronous JAX-WS Web Service and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g

  This posting is the result of a simple requirement to take an existing JAX-WS Web service,convert it to be asynchronous and call it from Oracle BPEL 11g It turned out that this is not a trivial task... BPEL has some very specific expectations about the WSDL for an asynchronous process. One approach is to develop the service starting from a WSDL document that meets BPEL's requirements. This is possible but requires considerable WSDL authoring skills. The other approach is to modify the WSDL generated by Web Service Annotations in Java code (Bottom up development) and instruct JAX-WS to use that WSDL instead of dynamically generating one from annotations. This is the approach taken in this article. This posting details how to: Modify a JAX-WS Web Service developed using a "Bottom up " approach to have an asynchronous method and callback. • Getting "boot error" when trying to boot from USB

  I'm wanting to try out Ubuntu, so followed the instructions for how to install Ubuntu onto a USB. I downloaded the .iso file, then the pendrivelinux 3 part process to make the USB bootable. I can see what looks like a full list of files on the USB (including the wubi.exe application and the syslinux folder). When I try to restart the computer with the USB in, I get the Dell start up screen, and then a black screen with "Boot Error" in the top right hand corner. Setup options (default) are to boot from Removable Device, then Hard Disc. USB is brand new, straight out of the packet. Computer: Dell Inspiron 530S BIOS: 1.0.13 OS: Windows Vista Home Edition USB: EMTEC 8Gb, formatted to FAT32 I've tried some of the tips in other help topics (holding down CTRL key while restarting, removing all other USB devices). I tried to reformat the USB to something other than FAT32, but my only other options were NTFS or exFAT (not FAT16 which was suggested in another topic).

• Optimizing data downloaded via 'link' media queries and asynchronous loading

  I have a website that tries to make sensible use of media queries and avoid 'expensive' CSS for users of mobile devices. My eventual goal is to make it 'mobile-first' but for now, since it is based on Twitter Bootstrap it isn't. I included some background images (Base64 encoded) and styles that would only apply to "full-size" browsers in a separate stylesheet loaded asynchronously via modernizr.load. In Firefox (but not webkit browsers) it makes it so that if you navigate away from the homepage and then return, the content (specifically, all those extras) 'blinks' when it finishes loading...or maybe I should say reloading. If, instead of using modernizr.load, I include that stylesheet via a link... in the head with a media query attribute will it prevent the data from being downloaded by non-matching browsers (mobile, based on screensize) that it is inapplicable to?

• Is Clojure, Scala and other restrained by the JVM vs CLR

  The Java implementors seem slow to adopt language improvements, for example compare C# with full closures, expression trees, LINQ etc.. to Java, and even the push back of some stuff to Java 8 will still leave it behind the current implementation of C#. However since I dont intend to use either Java or C# that particular language war isnt of interest too much, im more concerned with the JVM vs CLR. Is this lagging-behind also applicable to the JVM? Will Scala, Clojure etc.. will they be able to continue to innovate or score optimal performance in the face of slowly progressing underlying VM such as JVM? Is Clojure/Scala restrained at present by JVM limitations?

  I have a Joomla! 2.5 website, and I have to add a lightbox popup that will contain links to all articles from a specific category(+subs). If anyone can suggest all-in-one solution, that will be great! But generally I'm asking, how to list links to all articles from a specific category and its sub-categories in two/three columns? I know I can set Category blog View to output only article links, without full/introtext, but in this case links will all be in one column. I need at least two. A possibility of grouping article links by subcategory would be great as well (but this is the thing I can live without). How can this be done? I'm looking for: a standard way of configuring this Template override (I'm using T3 framework) Custom extension any other method ...

• The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

• Ubuntu reports low battery capacity on my Dell Vostro

  I have a Dell Vostro 1500. Before I wiped Windows XP off my hard drive in 2009, I had a full ~7 hrs battery capacity. I installed Ubuntu 9, and the capacity immediately dropped to about 27% (and has since decreased to about 11%). I couldn't figure out what to do, so I've just lived with the 20-30 minute battery life ever since. I upgraded to Ubuntu 10, and the issue remained. I wiped my hard drive clean again and installed Ubuntu 11, and the issue still remains. I tried what they told me in the forum here, but it didn't do anything. Is it possible for a battery to suddenly lose most of its capacity?? Or is there a bug in the power management software?

• Install Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu Server 10.04 from Source

  Has anyone had any luck compiling and installing Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu 10.04? I'm trying to set up realtime virus scanning on Samba shares (ClamAV) using the legacy version of Samba as it is the latest release supported by samba-vscan-0.3.6b. I'm no expert at this but I think I have all of the dependencies covered and I'm following the documentation with the source code but I'm getting errors as if there is a problem with the source code. I downloaded the source directly from http://ftp.samba.org/pub/samba/stable/samba-3.0.24.tar.gz After running ./configure and make, I get the following error. Compiling client/mount.cifs.c client/mount.cifs.c: In function ‘main’: client/mount.cifs.c:1068: error: ‘PATH_MAX’ undeclared (first use in this function) client/mount.cifs.c:1068: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once client/mount.cifs.c:1068: error: for each function it appears in.) make: *** [client/mount.cifs.o] Error 1 You can view the full output log here. • Is there a way to use a SSH connection to access SMB or UPnP files without setting up a VPN?

  What I'm trying to do is set up a SSH key that only gives access to certain directories, for security reasons I don't want it to have full access to my SSH server. I already have the ability to access the directories I need over my local network (right now using SMB, although I also used UPnP for awhile). I need, however, to be able to access those files securely over the internet from both Ubuntu and Windows machines. I'm somewhat new to SSH and not sure what the best approach to solving my problem is. If anyone knows how I can do this or where I can find a detailed tutorial I'd be grateful. And as always if anything is confusing or if there are any comments or corrections please let me know.

• GUI Application Resolution from Text Mode OS

  I'm trying to turn a computer into a Linux thin client via Ubuntu. I have a Dell OptiPlex 755 loaded with Ubuntu 14.04 installed and fully patched. I've configured the OS to run in text mode and automatically launch the VMWare Horizon's client, which works. The issue is that when the Horizon client launches, its resolution is only 1/4 of the screen. I've played with the resolution settings in grub which appears to modify the text environment but not the application environment for Horizon's. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to increase the resolution for a GUI application launch from text mode so it's full screen. Thanks!
