  • Mixing It Up with BluesMix

    - by Oracle OpenWorld Blog Team
    By Karen Shamban At home base in London prior to making a swing on the US west coast later this month, BluesMix took a few minutes to answer some musical questions. Q: What are the top three things people should know about your music? A: We focus on original material and blend funk with blues. We're big on songwriting but also performance, groove, and feel of the music. It's music you can dance to! We're from London, England and have been labeled 'one of the UK's leading blues/funk bands'. Oh - that's four things! :) Q: Do you prefer smaller, intimate venues or larger, louder ones? A: Actually both, for different reasons. We play many intimate club shows in London at prestigious venues such as the 100 Club. There's lots of musical history with these types of clubs where the likes of the Rolling Stones used to play week-in week-out in the '60s. Usually these shows generally have a fantastic atmosphere, with a close connection to the audience, who are packed close to the stage. They often turn up surprises too…for example, we've had artists such as Amy Winehouse and Mick Abrahams in the crowd enjoying the show and then asking to come onstage and play with the band. Lots of fun! The larger venues are great too, in a different way. We've played to 3,000-person+ crowds and the atmosphere with so many people enjoying the show is a real buzz. It's also nice to play outdoor venues, especially in places with nice weather like California! Q: What's new and different in the music you are playing today, versus a year or two ago? A: Well, we released a new album earlier this year. It's called Flat Nine; it's on the Proper Records label. Whilst our music has always been a blend of blues and vintage funk, this album in particular has evolved our funk side even further. We've received some really great reviews from the music press in the UK and had generous comparisons to the likes of The Meters, Dr. John, The Average White Band, Howlin' Wolf. The album has generated lots of interest, which is fantastic. We're playing to regular sellout shows in the UK and are also opening for some legends of the funk music scene, such as The New Mastersounds. BluesMix are headlining the Oracle OpenWorld Welcome Reception in Yerba Buena Gardens on Sunday, September 30 and are playing at the Oracle OpenWorld Music Festival at Slim's on Tuesday, October 2. • Play or Lift: which one is more explicit?

    - by Andrea
    I am going to investigate web development with Scala, and the choice is between learning Lift or Play: probably I will not have enough time to try both, at least at first. Now, many comparisons between the two are available on the internet, but I would like to know how do they compare with respect to being explicit and involving less magic. Let me explain what I mean by example. I have used, to various degrees, CakePHP, symfony2, Django and Grails. I feel a very clear distinction between Django and symfony2, which are very explicit about what you are doing, and Grails and CakePHP, which try to do their best to guess what you are trying to achieve and often feel "magical". Let me give some examples comparing Django and Grails. In Django, views are functions that take a request as input and return a response. You can instantiate explicitly an instance of HttpResponse and populate its body with a string, or you can use shortcut functions to leverage the template system. In any case the return value from your view always has the same type. In contrast, the render method from Grails is highly polymorphic. You can throw a context at it and it will try to render a template which is found by convention using that context. Or you can pass it a pair of a template path and a context and that will work too. Or a string. Or XML. Grails tries hard to make sense of whatever you return from your controller. In the Django ORM, each model class has a static attribute representing the manager for that class. That manager exposes a fluent interface to build querysets. In Grails, you can have a similar functionality by composing detached criteria. Still, the most common way to query objects seems to be the use of runtime-generated methods like FindUserByEmailNotNull or FindPostByDateGreaterThan. I will not go further, but my point is that in Django-like frameworks you have control over the whole flow of the request/response process, while in Grails-like ones I feel I only have to feel the blanks and the framework will manage the rest of the flow for me. This is not to criticize Grails or CakePHP; which type you prefer is mainly a matter of preference. In fact, I happen to like some aspects of Grails, but I feel more comfortable with a framework which does less for me. Back to the point of the question: which one among Play and Lift is more explicit about what you do and which one tries to simplify more what you have to do with a layer of "magic"?

  • Innovation for Retailers

    - by David Dorf
    One of my main objectives for this blog is to point out emerging technologies and how they might apply to the retail industry.  But ideas are just the beginning; retailers either have to rely on vendors or have their own lab to explore these ideas and see which ones work.  (A healthy dose of both is probably the best solution.)  The Nordstrom Innovation Lab is a fine example of dedicating resources to cultivate ideas and test prototypes. The video below, from 2011, is a case study in which the team builds an iPad app that helps customers purchase sunglasses in the store.  Customers take pictures of themselves wearing different sunglasses, then can do side-by-side comparisons. There are a few interesting take-aways from their process.  First, they are working in the store alongside employees and customers.  There's no concept of documenting all the requirements then building the product.  Instead, they work closely with those that will be using the app in order to fully understand what's needed.  When they find an issue, they change the software onsite and try again.  This iterative prototyping ensures their product hits the mark.  Feels like Extreme Programming if you recall that movement. Second, they have time-boxed the project to one week.  Either it works or it doesn't, and either way they've only expended a week's worth of resources.  Innovation always entails failure, and those that succeed are often good at detecting failure quickly then adjusting.  Fail fast and fail often. Third, its not always about technology.  I was impressed they used paper designs to walk through user stories and help understand the needs of the customer.  Pen and paper is the innovator's most powerful tool. Our Retail Applied Research (RAR) team uses some of these concepts in our development process.  (Calling it a process is probably overkill.)  We try to give life to concepts quickly so the rest of organization can help us decide if we're heading the right direction.  It takes many failures before finding a successful product.

  • What is going on in this SAT/vector projection code?

    - by ssb
    I'm looking at the example XNA SAT collision code presented here: http://www.xnadevelopment.com/tutorials/rotatedrectanglecollisions/rotatedrectanglecollisions.shtml See the following code: private int GenerateScalar(Vector2 theRectangleCorner, Vector2 theAxis) { //Using the formula for Vector projection. Take the corner being passed in //and project it onto the given Axis float aNumerator = (theRectangleCorner.X * theAxis.X) + (theRectangleCorner.Y * theAxis.Y); float aDenominator = (theAxis.X * theAxis.X) + (theAxis.Y * theAxis.Y); float aDivisionResult = aNumerator / aDenominator; Vector2 aCornerProjected = new Vector2(aDivisionResult * theAxis.X, aDivisionResult * theAxis.Y); //Now that we have our projected Vector, calculate a scalar of that projection //that can be used to more easily do comparisons float aScalar = (theAxis.X * aCornerProjected.X) + (theAxis.Y * aCornerProjected.Y); return (int)aScalar; } I think the problems I'm having with this come mostly from translating physics concepts into data structures. For example, earlier in the code there is a calculation of the axes to be used, and these are stored as Vector2, and they are found by subtracting one point from another, however these points are also stored as Vector2s. So are the axes being stored as slopes in a single Vector2? Next, what exactly does the Vector2 produced by the vector projection code represent? That is, I know it represents the projected vector, but as it pertains to a Vector2, what does this represent? A point on a line? Finally, what does the scalar at the end actually represent? It's fine to tell me that you're getting a scalar value of the projected vector, but none of the information I can find online seems to tell me about a scalar of a vector as it's used in this context. I don't see angles or magnitudes with these vectors so I'm a little disoriented when it comes to thinking in terms of physics. If this final scalar calculation is just a dot product, how is that directly applicable to SAT from here on? Is this what I use to calculate maximum/minimum values for overlap? I guess I'm just having trouble figuring out exactly what the dot product is representing in this particular context. Clearly I'm not quite up to date on my elementary physics, but any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

  • Best practices for using the Entity Framework with WPF DataBinding

    - by Ken Smith
    I'm in the process of building my first real WPF application (i.e., the first intended to be used by someone besides me), and I'm still wrapping my head around the best way to do things in WPF. It's a fairly simple data access application using the still-fairly-new Entity Framework, but I haven't been able to find a lot of guidance online for the best way to use these two technologies (WPF and EF) together. So I thought I'd toss out how I'm approaching it, and see if anyone has any better suggestions. I'm using the Entity Framework with SQL Server 2008. The EF strikes me as both much more complicated than it needs to be, and not yet mature, but Linq-to-SQL is apparently dead, so I might as well use the technology that MS seems to be focusing on. This is a simple application, so I haven't (yet) seen fit to build a separate data layer around it. When I want to get at data, I use fairly simple Linq-to-Entity queries, usually straight from my code-behind, e.g.: var families = from family in entities.Family.Include("Person") orderby family.PrimaryLastName, family.Tag select family; Linq-to-Entity queries return an IOrderedQueryable result, which doesn't automatically reflect changes in the underlying data, e.g., if I add a new record via code to the entity data model, the existence of this new record is not automatically reflected in the various controls referencing the Linq query. Consequently, I'm throwing the results of these queries into an ObservableCollection, to capture underlying data changes: familyOC = new ObservableCollection<Family>(families.ToList()); I then map the ObservableCollection to a CollectionViewSource, so that I can get filtering, sorting, etc., without having to return to the database. familyCVS.Source = familyOC; familyCVS.View.Filter = new Predicate<object>(ApplyFamilyFilter); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("PrimaryLastName", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("Tag", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); I then bind the various controls and what-not to that CollectionViewSource: <ListBox DockPanel.Dock="Bottom" Margin="5,5,5,5" Name="familyList" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource familyCVS}, Path=., Mode=TwoWay}" IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="True" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource familyTemplate}" SelectionChanged="familyList_SelectionChanged" /> When I need to add or delete records/objects, I manually do so from both the entity data model, and the ObservableCollection: private void DeletePerson(Person person) { entities.DeleteObject(person); entities.SaveChanges(); personOC.Remove(person); } I'm generally using StackPanel and DockPanel controls to position elements. Sometimes I'll use a Grid, but it seems hard to maintain: if you want to add a new row to the top of your grid, you have to touch every control directly hosted by the grid to tell it to use a new line. Uggh. (Microsoft has never really seemed to get the DRY concept.) I almost never use the VS WPF designer to add, modify or position controls. The WPF designer that comes with VS is sort of vaguely helpful to see what your form is going to look like, but even then, well, not really, especially if you're using data templates that aren't binding to data that's available at design time. If I need to edit my XAML, I take it like a man and do it manually. Most of my real code is in C# rather than XAML. As I've mentioned elsewhere, entirely aside from the fact that I'm not yet used to "thinking" in it, XAML strikes me as a clunky, ugly language, that also happens to come with poor designer and intellisense support, and that can't be debugged. Uggh. Consequently, whenever I can see clearly how to do something in C# code-behind that I can't easily see how to do in XAML, I do it in C#, with no apologies. There's been plenty written about how it's a good practice to almost never use code-behind in WPF page (say, for event-handling), but so far at least, that makes no sense to me whatsoever. Why should I do something in an ugly, clunky language with god-awful syntax, an astonishingly bad editor, and virtually no type safety, when I can use a nice, clean language like C# that has a world-class editor, near-perfect intellisense, and unparalleled type safety? So that's where I'm at. Any suggestions? Am I missing any big parts of this? Anything that I should really think about doing differently?

  • Should we hire someone who writes C in Perl?

    - by paxdiablo
    One of my colleagues recently interviewed some candidates for a job and one said they had very good Perl experience. Since my colleague didn't know Perl, he asked me for a critique of some code written (off-site) by that potential hire, so I had a look and told him my concerns (the main one was that it originally had no comments and it's not like we gave them enough time). However, the code works so I'm loathe to say no-go without some more input. Another concern is that this code basically looks exactly how I'd code it in C. It's been a while since I did Perl (and I didn't do a lot, I'm more a Python bod for quick scripts) but I seem to recall that it was a much more expressive language than what this guy used. I'm looking for input from real Perl coders, and suggestions for how it could be improved (and why a Perl coder should know that method of improvement). You can also wax lyrical about whether people who write one language in a totally different language should (or shouldn't be hired). I'm interested in your arguments but this question is primarily for a critique of the code. The spec was to successfully process a CSV file as follows and output the individual fields: User ID,Name , Level,Numeric ID pax, Pax Morgan ,admin,0 gt," Turner, George" rubbish,user,1 ms,"Mark \"X-Men\" Spencer","guest user",2 ab,, "user","3" The output was to be something like this (the potential hire's code actually output this): User ID,Name , Level,Numeric ID: [User ID] [Name] [Level] [Numeric ID] pax, Pax Morgan ,admin,0: [pax] [Pax Morgan] [admin] [0] gt," Turner, George " rubbish,user,1: [gt] [ Turner, George ] [user] [1] ms,"Mark \"X-Men\" Spencer","guest user",2: [ms] [Mark "X-Men" Spencer] [guest user] [2] ab,, "user","3": [ab] [] [user] [3] Here is the code they submitted: #!/usr/bin/perl # Open file. open (IN, "qq.in") || die "Cannot open qq.in"; # Process every line. while (<IN>) { chomp; $line = $_; print "$line:\n"; # Process every field in line. while ($line ne "") { # Skip spaces and start with empty field. if (substr ($line,0,1) eq " ") { $line = substr ($line,1); next; } $field = ""; $minlen = 0; # Detect quoted field or otherwise. if (substr ($line,0,1) eq "\"") { $line = substr ($line,1); $pastquote = 0; while ($line ne "") { # Special handling for quotes (\\ and \"). if (length ($line) >= 2) { if (substr ($line,0,2) eq "\\\"") { $field = $field . "\""; $line = substr ($line,2); next; } if (substr ($line,0,2) eq "\\\\") { $field = $field . "\\"; $line = substr ($line,2); next; } } # Detect closing quote. if (($pastquote == 0) && (substr ($line,0,1) eq "\"")) { $pastquote = 1; $line = substr ($line,1); $minlen = length ($field); next; } # Only worry about comma if past closing quote. if (($pastquote == 1) && (substr ($line,0,1) eq ",")) { $line = substr ($line,1); last; } $field = $field . substr ($line,0,1); $line = substr ($line,1); } } else { while ($line ne "") { if (substr ($line,0,1) eq ",") { $line = substr ($line,1); last; } if ($pastquote == 0) { $field = $field . substr ($line,0,1); } $line = substr ($line,1); } } # Strip trailing space. while ($field ne "") { if (length ($field) == $minlen) { last; } if (substr ($field,length ($field)-1,1) eq " ") { $field = substr ($field,0, length ($field)-1); next; } last; } print " [$field]\n"; } } close (IN);

  • BasicAuthProvider in ServiceStack

    - by Per
    I've got an issue with the BasicAuthProvider in ServiceStack. POST-ing to the CredentialsAuthProvider (/auth/credentials) is working fine. The problem is that when GET-ing (in Chrome): http://foo:pwd@localhost:81/tag/string/list the following is the result Handler for Request not found: Request.HttpMethod: GET Request.HttpMethod: GET Request.PathInfo: /login Request.QueryString: System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection Request.RawUrl: /login?redirect=http%3a%2f%2flocalhost%3a81%2ftag%2fstring%2flist which tells me that it redirected me to /login instead of serving the /tag/... request. Here's the entire code for my AppHost: public class AppHost : AppHostHttpListenerBase, IMessageSubscriber { private ITagProvider myTagProvider; private IMessageSender mySender; private const string UserName = "foo"; private const string Password = "pwd"; public AppHost( TagConfig config, IMessageSender sender ) : base( "BM App Host", typeof( AppHost ).Assembly ) { myTagProvider = new TagProvider( config ); mySender = sender; } public class CustomUserSession : AuthUserSession { public override void OnAuthenticated( IServiceBase authService, IAuthSession session, IOAuthTokens tokens, System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary<string, string> authInfo ) { authService.RequestContext.Get<IHttpRequest>().SaveSession( session ); } } public override void Configure( Funq.Container container ) { Plugins.Add( new MetadataFeature() ); container.Register<BeyondMeasure.WebAPI.Services.Tags.ITagProvider>( myTagProvider ); container.Register<IMessageSender>( mySender ); Plugins.Add( new AuthFeature( () => new CustomUserSession(), new AuthProvider[] { new CredentialsAuthProvider(), //HTML Form post of UserName/Password credentials new BasicAuthProvider(), //Sign-in with Basic Auth } ) ); container.Register<ICacheClient>( new MemoryCacheClient() ); var userRep = new InMemoryAuthRepository(); container.Register<IUserAuthRepository>( userRep ); string hash; string salt; new SaltedHash().GetHashAndSaltString( Password, out hash, out salt ); // Create test user userRep.CreateUserAuth( new UserAuth { Id = 1, DisplayName = "DisplayName", Email = "[email protected]", UserName = UserName, FirstName = "FirstName", LastName = "LastName", PasswordHash = hash, Salt = salt, }, Password ); } } Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong with either the SS configuration or how I am calling the service, i.e. why does it not accept the supplied user/pwd? • Is it bad practice to apply class-based design to JavaScript programs?

    - by helixed
    JavaScript is a prototyped-based language, and yet it has the ability to mimic some of the features of class-based object-oriented languages. For example, JavaScript does not have a concept of public and private members, but through the magic of closures, it's still possible to provide the same functionality. Similarly, method overloading, interfaces, namespaces and abstract classes can all be added in one way or another. Lately, as I've been programming in JavaScript, I've felt like I'm trying to turn it into a class-based language instead of using it in the way it's meant to be used. It seems like I'm trying to force the language to conform to what I'm used to. The following is some JavaScript code I've written recently. It's purpose is to abstract away some of the effort involved in drawing to the HTML5 canvas element. /* Defines the Drawing namespace. */ var Drawing = {}; /* Abstract base which represents an element to be drawn on the screen. @param The graphical context in which this Node is drawn. @param position The position of the center of this Node. */ Drawing.Node = function(context, position) { return { /* The method which performs the actual drawing code for this Node. This method must be overridden in any subclasses of Node. */ draw: function() { throw Exception.MethodNotOverridden; }, /* Returns the graphical context for this Node. @return The graphical context for this Node. */ getContext: function() { return context; }, /* Returns the position of this Node. @return The position of this Node. */ getPosition: function() { return position; }, /* Sets the position of this Node. @param thePosition The position of this Node. */ setPosition: function(thePosition) { position = thePosition; } }; } /* Define the shape namespace. */ var Shape = {}; /* A circle shape implementation of Drawing.Node. @param context The graphical context in which this Circle is drawn. @param position The center of this Circle. @param radius The radius of this circle. @praram color The color of this circle. */ Shape.Circle = function(context, position, radius, color) { //check the parameters if (radius < 0) throw Exception.InvalidArgument; var node = Drawing.Node(context, position); //overload the node drawing method node.draw = function() { var context = this.getContext(); var position = this.getPosition(); context.fillStyle = color; context.beginPath(); context.arc(position.x, position.y, radius, 0, Math.PI*2, true); context.closePath(); context.fill(); } /* Returns the radius of this Circle. @return The radius of this Circle. */ node.getRadius = function() { return radius; }; /* Sets the radius of this Circle. @param theRadius The new radius of this circle. */ node.setRadius = function(theRadius) { radius = theRadius; }; /* Returns the color of this Circle. @return The color of this Circle. */ node.getColor = function() { return color; }; /* Sets the color of this Circle. @param theColor The new color of this Circle. */ node.setColor = function(theColor) { color = theColor; }; //return the node return node; }; The code works exactly like it should for a user of Shape.Circle, but it feels like it's held together with Duct Tape. Can somebody provide some insight on this?

  • XML Parsing Error: junk after document element

    - by Jake
    I am using the following script to generate a RSS feed for my site: <?php class RSS { public function RSS() { $root = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']; require_once ("../connect.php"); } public function GetFeed() { return $this->getDetails() . $this->getItems(); } private function dbConnect() { DEFINE ('LINK', mysql_connect (DB_HOST, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD)); } private function getDetails() { $detailsTable = "rss_feed_details"; $this->dbConnect($detailsTable); $query = "SELECT * FROM ". $detailsTable ."   • MVC Page not showing up, 404 not found

    - by mwright
    I have a very simple MVC site that is returning a 404 not found error when trying to load a page at the very beginning. I'm looking for some direction to troubleshoot this problem since there is really nothing to go on from the error message. The error I'm getting is: Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. • drupal_get_form is not passing along node array

    - by ElectronicBlacksmith
    I have not been able to get drupal_get_form to pass on the node data. Code snippets are below. The drupal_get_form documentation (api.drupal.org) states that it will pass on the extra parameters. I am basing the node data not being passed because (apparently) $node['language'] is not defined in hook_form which causes $form['qqq'] not to be created and thus the preview button shows up. My goal here is that the preview button show up using path "node/add/author" but doesn't show up for "milan/author/add". Any alternative methods for achieving this goal would be helpful but the question I want answered is in the preceding paragraph. Everything I've read indicates that it should work. This menu item $items['milan/author/add'] = array( 'title' = 'Add Author', 'page callback' = 'get_author_form', 'access arguments' = array('access content'), 'file' = 'author.pages.inc', ); calls this code function get_author_form() { //return node_form(NULL,NULL); //return drupal_get_form('author_form'); return author_ajax_form('author'); } function author_ajax_form($type) { global $user; module_load_include('inc', 'node', 'node.pages'); $types = node_get_types(); $type = isset($type) ? str_replace('-', '_', $type) : NULL; // If a node type has been specified, validate its existence. if (isset($types[$type]) && node_access('create', $type)) { // Initialize settings: $node = array('uid' = $user-uid, 'name' = (isset($user-name) ? $user-name : ''), 'type' = $type, 'language' = 'bbb','bbb' = 'TRUE'); $output = drupal_get_form($type .'_node_form', $node); } return $output; } And here is the hook_form and hook_form_alter code function author_form_author_node_form_alter(&$form, &$form_state) { $form['author']=NULL; $form['taxonomy']=NULL; $form['options']=NULL; $form['menu']=NULL; $form['comment_settings']=NULL; $form['files']=NULL; $form['revision_information']=NULL; $form['attachments']=NULL; if($form["qqq"]) { $form['buttons']['preview']=NULL; } } function author_form(&$node) { return make_author_form(&$node); } function make_author_form(&$node) { global $user; $type = node_get_types('type', $node); $node = author_make_title($node); drupal_set_breadcrumb(array(l(t('Home'), NULL), l(t($node-title), 'node/' . $node-nid))); $form['authorset'] = array( '#type' = 'fieldset', '#title' = t('Author'), '#weight' = -50, '#collapsible' = FALSE, '#collapsed' = FALSE, ); $form['author_id'] = array( '#access' = user_access('create pd_recluse entries'), '#type' = 'hidden', '#default_value' = $node-author_id, '#weight' = -20 ); $form['authorset']['last_name'] = array( '#type' = 'textfield', '#title' = t('Last Name'), '#maxlength' = 60, '#default_value' = $node-last_name ); $form['authorset']['first_name'] = array( '#type' = 'textfield', '#title' = t('First Name'), '#maxlength' = 60, '#default_value' = $node-first_name ); $form['authorset']['middle_name'] = array( '#type' = 'textfield', '#title' = t('Middle Name'), '#maxlength' = 60, '#default_value' = $node-middle_name ); $form['authorset']['suffix_name'] = array( '#type' = 'textfield', '#title' = t('Suffix Name'), '#maxlength' = 14, '#default_value' = $node-suffix_name ); $form['authorset']['body_filter']['body'] = array( '#access' = user_access('create pd_recluse entries'), '#type' = 'textarea', '#title' = 'Describe Author', '#default_value' = $node-body, '#required' = FALSE, '#weight' = -19 ); $form['status'] = array( '#type' = 'hidden', '#default_value' = '1' ); $form['promote'] = array( '#type' = 'hidden', '#default_value' = '1' ); $form['name'] = array( '#type' = 'hidden', '#default_value' = $user-name ); $form['format'] = array( '#type' = 'hidden', '#default_value' = '1' ); // NOTE in node_example there is some addition code here not needed for this simple node-type $thepath='milan/author'; if($_REQUEST["theletter"]) { $thepath .= "/" . $_REQUEST["theletter"]; } if($node['language']) { $thepath='milan/authorajaxclose'; $form['qqq'] = array( '#type' = 'hidden', '#default_value' = '1' ); } $form['#redirect'] = $thepath; return $form; } That menu path coincides with this theme (PHPTemplate)

  • How to get dropdown menu to open/close on click rather than hover?

    - by TankDriver
    Hello! I am very new to java and ajax/jquery and have been working on trying to get a script to open and close the drop menu on click rather that hover. The menu in question is found on http://www.gamefriction.com/Coded/ and is the dark menu on the right side under the header. I would like it to open and close like the other menu that is further below it (it is light gray and is in the "Select Division" module). The gray menu is part of a menu and the language menu is not. I have a jquery import as well which can be found in the view source of the above link. My Java: <script type="text/javascript"> /* Language Selector */ $(function() { $("#lang-selector li").hover(function() { $('ul:first',this).css('display', 'block'); }, function() { $('ul:first',this).css('display', 'none'); }); }); $(document).ready(function(){ /* Navigation */ $('.subnav-game').hide(); $('.subnav-game:eq(0)').show(); $('.preorder-type').hide(); $('.preorder-type:eq(3)').show(); }); </script> My CSS: #lang-selector { font-size: 11px; height: 21px; margin: 7px auto 17px auto; width: 186px; } #lang-selector span { color: #999; float: left; margin: 4px 0 0 87px; padding-right: 4px; text-align: right; } #lang-selector ul { float: left; list-style: none; margin: 0; padding: 0; } #lang-selector ul li a { padding: 3px 10px 1px 10px; } #lang-selector ul, #lang-selector a { width: 186px; } #lang-selector ul ul { display: none; position: absolute; } #lang-selector ul ul li { border-top: 1px solid #666; float: left; position: relative; } #lang-selector a { background: url("http://www.gamefriction.com/Coded/images/language_bg.png") no-repeat; color: #666; display: block; font-size: 10px; height: 17px; padding: 4px 10px 0 10px; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; width: 166px; } #lang-selector ul ul li a { background: #333; color: #999; } #lang-selector ul ul li a:hover { background: #c4262c; color: #fff; } My HTML: <div id="lang-selector"> <ul> <li> <a href="#">Choose a Language</a> <ul> <li><a href="?iw_lang=en">English</a></li> <li><a href="?iw_lang=de">Deutsch</a></li> <li><a href="?iw_lang=es">Espa&ntilde;ol</a></li> <li><a href="?iw_lang=fr">Fran&ccedil;ais</a></li> <li><a href="?iw_lang=it">Italiano</a></li> </ul> </li> </ul> </div> Thanks!

  • HttpWebRequest response produces HTTP 422. Why?

    - by Simon
    Hi there. I'm trying to programmatically send a POST-request to a web-server in order to login an then perform other requests that require a login. This is my code: Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes( String.Format( "login={0}&password={1}&authenticity_token={2}", username, password, token)); //Create HTTP-request for login HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)HttpWebRequest.Create("http://www.xxx.xx/xx/xx"); request.Method = "POST"; request.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; request.ContentLength = data.Length; request.CookieContainer = new CookieContainer(); request.Accept = "application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html; +"q=0.9,text/plain ;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5"; request.Referer = "http://www.garzantilinguistica.it/it/session"; request.Headers.Add("Accept-Language", "de-DE"); request.Headers.Add("Origin", "http://www.xxx.xx"); request.UserAgent = "C#"; request.Headers.Add("Accept-Encoding", "gzip, deflate"); After sending the request //Send post request var requestStream = request.GetRequestStream(); requestStream.Write(data, 0, data.Length); requestStream.Flush(); requestStream.Close(); ... I want to get the servers response: //Get Response StreamReader responseStreamReader = new StreamReader( request.GetResponse().GetResponseStream()); //WebException: HTTP 422! string content = responseStreamReader.ReadToEnd(); This piece of code fires the WebException, that tells me the server responded with HTTP 422 (unprocessable entity due to semantic errors) Then I compared (using a TCP/IP sniffers) the requests of my program and the browser (which of course produces a valid POST-request and gets the right response). (1) My program's request: POST /it/session HTTP/1.1 Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Accept: application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9,text/plain; q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5 Referer: http://www.garzantilinguistica.it/it/session Accept-Language: de-DE Origin: http://www.garzantilinguistica.it User-Agent: C# Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Host: www.garzantilinguistica.it Content-Length: 111 Expect: 100-continue Connection: Keep-Alive HTTP/1.1 100 Continue [email protected]&password=machivui&authenticity_token=4vLgtwP3nFNg4NeuG4MbUnU7sy4z91Wi8WJXH0POFmg= HTTP/1.1 422 Unprocessable Entity (2) The browser's request: POST /it/session HTTP/1.1 Host: www.garzantilinguistica.it Referer: http://www.garzantilinguistica.it/it/session Accept: application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9, text/plain;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5 Accept-Language: de-DE Origin: http://www.garzantilinguistica.it User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; de-DE) AppleWebKit/531.22.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Safari/531.22.7 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Cookie: __utma=244184339.652523587.1275208707.1275208707.1275211298.2; __utmb=244184339.20.10.1275211298; __utmc=244184339; __utmz=244184339.1275208707.1.1.utmcsr=(direct)|utmccn=(direct)|utmcmd=(none); _garzanti2009_session=BAh7CDoPc2Vzc2lvbl9pZCIlZDg4MWZjNjg2YTRhZWE0NDQ0ZTJmMTU2YWY4ZTQ1NGU6EF9jc3JmX3Rva2VuIjFqRWdLdll3dTYwOTVVTEpNZkt6dG9jUCtaZ0o4V0FnV2V5ZnpuREx6QUlZPSIKZmxhc2hJQzonQWN0aW9uQ29udHJvbGxlcjo6Rmxhc2g6OkZsYXNoSGFzaHsGOgplcnJvciIVbG9naW4gbm9uIHZhbGlkbwY6CkB1c2VkewY7CFQ%3D--4200fa769898dd156faa49e457baf660cf068d08 Content-Length: 144 Connection: keep-alive authenticity_token=jEgKvYwu6095ULJMfKztocP%2BZgJ8WAgWeyfznDLzAIY%3D&login=thespider14%40hotmail.com&password=machivui&remember_me=1&commit=Entra HTTP/1.1 302 Found Can someone help to understand which part of the request I am missing or what the main difference between the browser's and my request is?   • What are good CLI tools for JSON?

    - by jasonmp85
    General Problem Though I may be diagnosing the root cause of an event, determining how many users it affected, or distilling timing logs in order to assess the performance and throughput impact of a recent code change, my tools stay the same: grep, awk, sed, tr, uniq, sort, zcat, tail, head, join, and split. To glue them all together, Unix gives us pipes, and for fancier filtering we have xargs. If these fail me, there's always perl -e. These tools are perfect for processing CSV files, tab-delimited files, log files with a predictable line format, or files with comma-separated key-value pairs. In other words, files where each line has next to no context. XML Analogues I recently needed to trawl through Gigabytes of XML to build a histogram of usage by user. This was easy enough with the tools I had, but for more complicated queries the normal approaches break down. Say I have files with items like this: <foo user="me"> <baz key="zoidberg" value="squid" /> <baz key="leela" value="cyclops" /> <baz key="fry" value="rube" /> </foo> And let's say I want to produce a mapping from user to average number of <baz>s per <foo>. Processing line-by-line is no longer an option: I need to know which user's <foo> I'm currently inspecting so I know whose average to update. Any sort of Unix one liner that accomplishes this task is likely to be inscrutable. Fortunately in XML-land, we have wonderful technologies like XPath, XQuery, and XSLT to help us. Previously, I had gotten accustomed to using the wonderful XML::XPath Perl module to accomplish queries like the one above, but after finding a TextMate Plugin that could run an XPath expression against my current window, I stopped writing one-off Perl scripts to query XML. And I just found out about XMLStarlet which is installing as I type this and which I look forward to using in the future. JSON Solutions? So this leads me to my question: are there any tools like this for JSON? It's only a matter of time before some investigation task requires me to do similar queries on JSON files, and without tools like XPath and XSLT, such a task will be a lot harder. If I had a bunch of JSON that looked like this: { "firstName": "Bender", "lastName": "Robot", "age": 200, "address": { "streetAddress": "123", "city": "New York", "state": "NY", "postalCode": "1729" }, "phoneNumber": [ { "type": "home", "number": "666 555-1234" }, { "type": "fax", "number": "666 555-4567" } ] } And wanted to find the average number of phone numbers each person had, I could do something like this with XPath: fn:avg(/fn:count(phoneNumber)) Questions Are there any command-line tools that can "query" JSON files in this way? If you have to process a bunch of JSON files on a Unix command line, what tools do you use? Heck, is there even work being done to make a query language like this for JSON? If you do use tools like this in your day-to-day work, what do you like/dislike about them? Are there any gotchas? I'm noticing more and more data serialization is being done using JSON, so processing tools like this will be crucial when analyzing large data dumps in the future. Language libraries for JSON are very strong and it's easy enough to write scripts to do this sort of processing, but to really let people play around with the data shell tools are needed. • Why doesn't my QsciLexerCustom subclass work in PyQt4 using QsciScintilla?

    - by Jon Watte
    My end goal is to get Erlang syntax highlighting in QsciScintilla using PyQt4 and Python 2.6. I'm running on Windows 7, but will also need Ubuntu support. PyQt4 is missing the necessary wrapper code for the Erlang lexer/highlighter that "base" scintilla has, so I figured I'd write a lightweight one on top of QsciLexerCustom. It's a little bit problematic, because the Qsci wrapper seems to really want to talk about line+index rather than offset-from-start when getting/setting subranges of text. Meanwhile, the lexer gets arguments as offset-from-start. For now, I get a copy of the entire text, and split that up as appropriate. I have the following lexer, and I apply it with setLexer(). It gets all the appropriate calls when I open a new file and sets this as the lexer, and prints a bunch of appropriate lines based on what it's doing... but there is no styling in the document. I tried making all the defined styles red, and the document is still stubbornly black-on-white, so apparently the styles don't really "take effect" What am I doing wrong? If nobody here knows, what's the appropriate discussion forum where people might actually know these things? (It's an interesting intersection between Python, Qt and Scintilla, so I imagine the set of people who would know is small) Let's assume prefs.declare() just sets up a dict that returns the value for the given key (I've verified this -- it's not the problem). Let's assume scintilla is reasonably properly constructed into its host window QWidget. Specifically, if I apply a bundled lexer (such as QsciLexerPython), it takes effect and does show styled text. prefs.declare('font.name.margin', "MS Dlg") prefs.declare('font.size.margin', 8) prefs.declare('font.name.code', "Courier New") prefs.declare('font.size.code', 10) prefs.declare('color.editline', "#d0e0ff") class LexerErlang(Qsci.QsciLexerCustom): def __init__(self, obj = None): Qsci.QsciLexerCustom.__init__(self, obj) self.sci = None self.plainFont = QtGui.QFont() self.plainFont.setPointSize(int(prefs.get('font.size.code'))) self.plainFont.setFamily(prefs.get('font.name.code')) self.marginFont = QtGui.QFont() self.marginFont.setPointSize(int(prefs.get('font.size.code'))) self.marginFont.setFamily(prefs.get('font.name.margin')) self.boldFont = QtGui.QFont() self.boldFont.setPointSize(int(prefs.get('font.size.code'))) self.boldFont.setFamily(prefs.get('font.name.code')) self.boldFont.setBold(True) self.styles = [ Qsci.QsciStyle(0, QtCore.QString("base"), QtGui.QColor("#000000"), QtGui.QColor("#ffffff"), self.plainFont, True), Qsci.QsciStyle(1, QtCore.QString("comment"), QtGui.QColor("#008000"), QtGui.QColor("#eeffee"), self.marginFont, True), Qsci.QsciStyle(2, QtCore.QString("keyword"), QtGui.QColor("#000080"), QtGui.QColor("#ffffff"), self.boldFont, True), Qsci.QsciStyle(3, QtCore.QString("string"), QtGui.QColor("#800000"), QtGui.QColor("#ffffff"), self.marginFont, True), Qsci.QsciStyle(4, QtCore.QString("atom"), QtGui.QColor("#008080"), QtGui.QColor("#ffffff"), self.plainFont, True), Qsci.QsciStyle(5, QtCore.QString("macro"), QtGui.QColor("#808000"), QtGui.QColor("#ffffff"), self.boldFont, True), Qsci.QsciStyle(6, QtCore.QString("error"), QtGui.QColor("#000000"), QtGui.QColor("#ffd0d0"), self.plainFont, True), ] print("LexerErlang created") def description(self, ix): for i in self.styles: if i.style() == ix: return QtCore.QString(i.description()) return QtCore.QString("") def setEditor(self, sci): self.sci = sci Qsci.QsciLexerCustom.setEditor(self, sci) print("LexerErlang.setEditor()") def styleText(self, start, end): print("LexerErlang.styleText(%d,%d)" % (start, end)) lines = self.getText(start, end) offset = start self.startStyling(offset, 0) print("startStyling()") for i in lines: if i == "": self.setStyling(1, self.styles[0]) print("setStyling(1)") offset += 1 continue if i[0] == '%': self.setStyling(len(i)+1, self.styles[1]) print("setStyling(%)") offset += len(i)+1 continue self.setStyling(len(i)+1, self.styles[0]) print("setStyling(n)") offset += len(i)+1 def getText(self, start, end): data = self.sci.text() print("LexerErlang.getText(): " + str(len(data)) + " chars") return data[start:end].split('\n') Applied to the QsciScintilla widget as follows: _lexers = { 'erl': (Q.SCLEX_ERLANG, LexerErlang), 'hrl': (Q.SCLEX_ERLANG, LexerErlang), 'html': (Q.SCLEX_HTML, Qsci.QsciLexerHTML), 'css': (Q.SCLEX_CSS, Qsci.QsciLexerCSS), 'py': (Q.SCLEX_PYTHON, Qsci.QsciLexerPython), 'php': (Q.SCLEX_PHP, Qsci.QsciLexerHTML), 'inc': (Q.SCLEX_PHP, Qsci.QsciLexerHTML), 'js': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerJavaScript), 'cpp': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerCPP), 'h': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerCPP), 'cxx': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerCPP), 'hpp': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerCPP), 'c': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerCPP), 'hxx': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerCPP), 'tpl': (Q.SCLEX_CPP, Qsci.QsciLexerCPP), 'xml': (Q.SCLEX_XML, Qsci.QsciLexerXML), } ... inside my document window class ... def addContentsDocument(self, contents, title): handler = self.makeScintilla() handler.title = title sci = handler.sci sci.append(contents) self.tabWidget.addTab(sci, title) self.tabWidget.setCurrentWidget(sci) self.applyLexer(sci, title) EventBus.bus.broadcast('command.done', {'text': 'Opened ' + title}) return handler def applyLexer(self, sci, title): (language, lexer) = language_and_lexer_from_title(title) if lexer: l = lexer() print("making lexer: " + str(l)) sci.setLexer(l) else: print("setting lexer by id: " + str(language)) sci.SendScintilla(Qsci.QsciScintillaBase.SCI_SETLEXER, language) linst = sci.lexer() print("lexer: " + str(linst)) def makeScintilla(self): sci = Qsci.QsciScintilla() sci.setUtf8(True) sci.setTabIndents(True) sci.setIndentationsUseTabs(False) sci.setIndentationWidth(4) sci.setMarginsFont(self.smallFont) sci.setMarginWidth(0, self.smallFontMetrics.width('00000')) sci.setFont(self.monoFont) sci.setAutoIndent(True) sci.setBraceMatching(Qsci.QsciScintilla.StrictBraceMatch) handler = SciHandler(sci) self.handlers[sci] = handler sci.setMarginLineNumbers(0, True) sci.setCaretLineVisible(True) sci.setCaretLineBackgroundColor(QtGui.QColor(prefs.get('color.editline'))) return handler Let's assume the rest of the application works, too (because it does :-)

  • urllib2 misbehaving with dynamically loaded content

So the HTML that arrived was a sort of skeleton and ajax was used to fill in the gaps. This is fine and not at all surprising Since the page should be seo friendly it should work fine without js. in step 4 nothing happens in the console and the skeleton page loads pre-populated rendering the ajax unnecessary. This is also completely not confusing in step 7 the ajax calls are made but fail. this is also ok since the urls they are using are not local, the calls are thus broken. The page looks like the skeleton. This is also great and expected. in step 8: no ajax calls are made and the skeleton is just a skeleton. I would have thought that this should behave very much like in step 4 question What I want to do is use urllib2 to grab the html from step 4 but I cant figure out how. What am I missing and how could I pull this off? To paraphrase If I was writing a spider I would want to be able to grab plain ol' HTML (as in that which resulted in step 4). I dont want to execute ajax stuff or any javascript at all. I don't want to populate anything dynamically. I just want HTML. The seo friendly site wants me to get what I want because that's what seo is all about. How would one go about getting plain HTML content given the situation I outlined? To do it manually I would turn off js, navigate to the page and copy the html. I want to automate this. stuff I've tried I used wireshark to look at packet headers and the GETs sent off from my pc in steps 2 and 4 have the same headers. Reading about SEO stuff makes me think that this is pretty normal otherwise techniques such as hijax wouldn't be used. Here are the headers my browser sends: Host: groupon.cl User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: keep-alive Here are the headers my script sends: Accept-Encoding: identity Host: groupon.cl Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Connection: close Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 User-Agent: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 The differences are: my script has Connection = close instead of keep-alive. I can't see how this would cause a problem my script has Accept-encoding = identity. This might be the cause of the problem. I can't really see why the host would use this field to determine the user-agent though. If I change encoding to match the browser request headers then I have trouble decoding it. I'm working on this now... watch this space, I'll update the question as new info comes up

  • iOS: Interpreted code - where do they draw the line?

    - by d7samurai
    Apple's iOS developer guidelines state: 3.3.2 — An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded or used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple’s Documented APIs and built-in interpreter(s). Assuming that downloading data - like XML and images (or a game level description), for example - at run-time is allowed (as is my impression), I am wondering where they draw the line between "data" and "code". Picture the scenario of an app that delivers interactive "presentations" to users (like a survey, for instance). Presentations are added continuously to the server and different presentations are made available to different users, so they cannot be part of the initial app download (this is the whole point). They are described in XML format, but being interactive, they might contain conditional branching of this sort (shown in pseudo form to exemplify): <options id="Gender"> <option value="1">Male</option> <option value="2">Female</option> </options> <branches id="Gender"> <branch value="1"> <image src="Man" /> </branch> <branch value="2"> <image src="Woman" /> </branch> </branches> When the presentation is "played" within the app, the above would be presented in two steps. First a selection screen where the user can click on either of the two choices presented ("Male" or "Female"). Next, an image will be [downloaded dynamically] and displayed based on the choice made in the previous step. Now, it's easy to imagine additional tags describing further logic still. For example, a containing tag could be added: <loop count="3"> <options... /> <branches... /> </loop> The result here being that the selection screen / image screen pair would be sequentially presented three times over, of course. Or imagine some description of a level in a game. It's easy to view that as passive "data", but if it includes, say, several doorways that the user can go through and with various triggers, traps and points attached to them etc - isn't that the same as using a script - or, indeed, interpreted code - to describe options and their conditional responses? Assuming that the interpretation engine for this XML data is already present in the app and that such presentations can only be consumed (not created or edited) in the app, how would this fare against Apple's iOS guidelines? Doesn't XML basically constitute a scripting language (couldn't any interpreted programming language simply be described by XML) in this sense? Would it be OK if the proprietary scripting language (ref the XML used above) was strictly sandboxed (how can they tell?) and not given access to the operating system in any way (but able to download content dynamically - and upload results to the authoring server)? Where does the line go?

  • Jquery / PhP / Joomla Select one of two comboboxes does not get updated

    - by bluesbrother
    I am making a Joomla component wich has 3 comboboxes/selects on the page. One with languages and 2 with subjects. If you change the language the other two get filled with the same data (the subjects in the selected language) the name of the selectbox are different but otherwise the same. I get an error for one of the subject boxes (hence the url gets red), but there is no logic in wich one will give an error. In Firebug i get the HTML back for the one without the other and this one gets updated but the other one gives nothing back. If i right click in firebug on the one that gave the error, and do "send again" it will load fine. Is their a timing problem? The change event of the language selectbox: jQuery('#cmbldcoi_ldlink_language').bind('change', function() { var cmbLangID = jQuery('#cmbldcoi_ldlink_language').val(); if (cmbLangID !=0) { getSubjectCmb_lang(cmbLangID, 'cmbldcoi_ldlink_subjects', '#ldlinksubjects'); } }); Function that requests the php file to create the html for the select: function getSubjectCmb_lang(langID, cmbName, DivWhereIn) { var xdate = new Date().getTime(); var url = 'index.php?option=com_ldadmin&view=ldadmin&format=raw&task=getcmbsubj_lang&langid=' + langID + '&cmbname=' + cmbName + '&'+ xdate; jQuery(DivWhereIn).load(url, function(){ }); } And in the php file there is a connection made to the database to ge the information to build the selectbox. I use a function for this that is okay because it makes al my selectboxes. The only place where there are problems with select boxes is on the pages that has 2 selects that need to change when a third one changed. My guess it is somewhere in the Jquery where this goes wrong. And i think it has to do with timing. But i am open for all sugestions. Thanx. UPDATE: No the ID and Name fields are different. They are named : cmbldcoi_child cmbldcoi_parent Here is my code: The change event for the first combobox which makes the other two change: jQuery('#cmbldcoi_language_chain_subj').bind('change', function(){ var langID = jQuery('#cmbldcoi_language_chain_subj').val(); if (langID != 0){ getSubjectCmb_lang(langID, 'cmbldcoi_child', '#div_cmbldcoi_child'); getSubjectCmb_lang(langID, 'cmbldcoi_parent', '#div_cmbldcoi_parent'); } }); } The function wicht calls the php file to get the info from the database: function getSubjectCmb_lang(langID, cmbName, DivWhereIn){ var xdate = new Date().getTime(); var url = 'index.php?option=com_ldadmin&view=ldadmin&format=raw&task=getcmbsubj_lang&langid=' + langID + '&cmbname=' + cmbName + '&'+ xdate; jQuery(DivWhereIn).load(url, function(){ }); } The PHP code function getcmbsubj_lang(){ $langid = JRequest::getVar('langid'); if ($langid > 0 ){ $langid = JRequest::getVar('langid'); }else{ $langid = 1; } $cmbName = JRequest::getVar('cmbname'); //$lang_sufx = self::get_#__sufx($langid); print ld_html::ld_create_cmb_html($cmbName, '#__ldcoi_subjects','id', 'subject_name', " WHERE id_language={$langid} ORDER BY subject_name" ); } There is a class wich is called ld_html wich has an funnction in it that creates a combobox. ld_html::ld_create_cmb_html() It gets an table name, id field, namefield and optional an where clause. It all works fine if there is just one combobox thats needs updating. It give a problem when there are two. Thanks for the help !

    I'm writing simple language in ANTLR, and I'd like to write shell where I can put line of code, hit ENTER and have it executed, enter another line, and have it executed. • Function for counting characters/words not working

For many Web pages this lack of processing capability is not a great drawback; the pages are simply displays of static, unchanging, information for which no manipulation by the user is required. Still, there are cases where the ability to respond to user actions and the availability of processing methods can be a great asset. • Ajax Control Toolkit May 2012 Release

    - by Stephen.Walther
    I’m happy to announce the May 2012 release of the Ajax Control Toolkit. This newest release of the Ajax Control Toolkit includes a new file upload control which displays file upload progress. We’ve also added several significant enhancements to the existing HtmlEditorExtender control such as support for uploading images and Source View. You can download and start using the newest version of the Ajax Control Toolkit by entering the following command in the Library Package Manager console in Visual Studio: Install-Package AjaxControlToolkit Alternatively, you can download the latest version of the Ajax Control Toolkit from CodePlex: http://AjaxControlToolkit.CodePlex.com The New Ajax File Upload Control The most requested new feature for the Ajax Control Toolkit (according to the CodePlex Issue Tracker) has been support for file upload with progress. We worked hard over the last few months to create an entirely new file upload control which displays upload progress. Here is a sample which illustrates how you can use the new AjaxFileUpload control: <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="01_FileUpload.aspx.cs" Inherits="WebApplication1._01_FileUpload" %> <html> <head runat="server"> <title>Simple File Upload</title> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <ajaxToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager runat="server" /> <ajaxToolkit:AjaxFileUpload id="ajaxUpload1" OnUploadComplete="ajaxUpload1_OnUploadComplete" runat="server" /> </div> </form> </body> </html> The page above includes a ToolkitScriptManager control. This control is required to use any of the controls in the Ajax Control Toolkit because this control is responsible for loading all of the scripts required by a control. The page also contains an AjaxFileUpload control. The UploadComplete event is handled in the code-behind for the page: namespace WebApplication1 { public partial class _01_FileUpload : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void ajaxUpload1_OnUploadComplete(object sender, AjaxControlToolkit.AjaxFileUploadEventArgs e) { // Generate file path string filePath = "~/Images/" + e.FileName; // Save upload file to the file system ajaxUpload1.SaveAs(MapPath(filePath)); } } } The UploadComplete handler saves each uploaded file by calling the AjaxFileUpload control’s SaveAs() method with a full file path. Here’s a video which illustrates the process of uploading a file: Warning: in order to write to the Images folder on a production IIS server, you need Write permissions on the Images folder. You need to provide permissions for the IIS Application Pool account to write to the Images folder. To learn more, see: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/624/application-pool-identities/ Showing File Upload Progress The new AjaxFileUpload control takes advantage of HTML5 upload progress events (described in the XMLHttpRequest Level 2 standard). This standard is supported by Firefox 8+, Chrome 16+, Safari 5+, and Internet Explorer 10+. In other words, the standard is supported by the most recent versions of all browsers except for Internet Explorer which will support the standard with the release of Internet Explorer 10. The AjaxFileUpload control works with all browsers, even browsers which do not support the new XMLHttpRequest Level 2 standard. If you use the AjaxFileUpload control with a downlevel browser – such as Internet Explorer 9 — then you get a simple throbber image during a file upload instead of a progress indicator. Here’s how you specify a throbber image when declaring the AjaxFileUpload control: <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="02_FileUpload.aspx.cs" Inherits="WebApplication1._02_FileUpload" %> <html> <head id="Head1" runat="server"> <title>File Upload with Throbber</title> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <ajaxToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager ID="ToolkitScriptManager1" runat="server" /> <ajaxToolkit:AjaxFileUpload id="ajaxUpload1" OnUploadComplete="ajaxUpload1_OnUploadComplete" ThrobberID="MyThrobber" runat="server" /> <asp:Image id="MyThrobber" ImageUrl="ajax-loader.gif" Style="display:None" runat="server" /> </div> </form> </body> </html> Notice that the page above includes an image with the Id MyThrobber. This image is displayed while files are being uploaded. I use the website http://AjaxLoad.info to generate animated busy wait images. Drag-And-Drop File Upload If you are using an uplevel browser then you can drag-and-drop the files which you want to upload onto the AjaxFileUpload control. The following video illustrates how drag-and-drop works: Remember that drag-and-drop will not work on Internet Explorer 9 or older. Accepting Multiple Files By default, the AjaxFileUpload control enables you to upload multiple files at a time. When you open the file dialog, use the CTRL or SHIFT key to select multiple files. If you want to restrict the number of files that can be uploaded then use the MaximumNumberOfFiles property like this: <ajaxToolkit:AjaxFileUpload id="ajaxUpload1" OnUploadComplete="ajaxUpload1_OnUploadComplete" ThrobberID="throbber" MaximumNumberOfFiles="1" runat="server" /> In the code above, the maximum number of files which can be uploaded is restricted to a single file. Restricting Uploaded File Types You might want to allow only certain types of files to be uploaded. For example, you might want to accept only image uploads. In that case, you can use the AllowedFileTypes property to provide a list of allowed file types like this: <ajaxToolkit:AjaxFileUpload id="ajaxUpload1" OnUploadComplete="ajaxUpload1_OnUploadComplete" ThrobberID="throbber" AllowedFileTypes="jpg,jpeg,gif,png" runat="server" /> The code above prevents any files except jpeg, gif, and png files from being uploaded. Enhancements to the HTMLEditorExtender Over the past months, we spent a considerable amount of time making bug fixes and feature enhancements to the existing HtmlEditorExtender control. I want to focus on two of the most significant enhancements that we made to the control: support for Source View and support for uploading images. Adding Source View Support to the HtmlEditorExtender When you click the Source View tag, the HtmlEditorExtender changes modes and displays the HTML source of the contents contained in the TextBox being extended. You can use Source View to make fine-grain changes to HTML before submitting the HTML to the server. For reasons of backwards compatibility, the Source View tab is disabled by default. To enable Source View, you need to declare your HtmlEditorExtender with the DisplaySourceTab property like this: <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="05_SourceView.aspx.cs" Inherits="WebApplication1._05_SourceView" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html> <head id="Head1" runat="server"> <title>HtmlEditorExtender with Source View</title> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <ajaxToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager ID="ToolkitScriptManager1" runat="server" /> <asp:TextBox id="txtComments" TextMode="MultiLine" Columns="60" Rows="10" Runat="server" /> <ajaxToolkit:HtmlEditorExtender id="HEE1" TargetControlID="txtComments" DisplaySourceTab="true" runat="server" /> </div> </form> </body> </html> The page above includes a ToolkitScriptManager, TextBox, and HtmlEditorExtender control. The HtmlEditorExtender extends the TextBox so that it supports rich text editing. Notice that the HtmlEditorExtender includes a DisplaySourceTab property. This property causes a button to appear at the bottom of the HtmlEditorExtender which enables you to switch to Source View: Note: when using the HtmlEditorExtender, we recommend that you set the DOCTYPE for the document. Otherwise, you can encounter weird formatting issues. Accepting Image Uploads We also enhanced the HtmlEditorExtender to support image uploads (another very highly requested feature at CodePlex). The following video illustrates the experience of adding an image to the editor: Once again, for backwards compatibility reasons, support for image uploads is disabled by default. Here’s how you can declare the HtmlEditorExtender so that it supports image uploads: <ajaxToolkit:HtmlEditorExtender id="MyHtmlEditorExtender" TargetControlID="txtComments" OnImageUploadComplete="MyHtmlEditorExtender_ImageUploadComplete" DisplaySourceTab="true" runat="server" > <Toolbar> <ajaxToolkit:Bold /> <ajaxToolkit:Italic /> <ajaxToolkit:Underline /> <ajaxToolkit:InsertImage /> </Toolbar> </ajaxToolkit:HtmlEditorExtender> There are two things that you should notice about the code above. First, notice that an InsertImage toolbar button is added to the HtmlEditorExtender toolbar. This HtmlEditorExtender will render toolbar buttons for bold, italic, underline, and insert image. Second, notice that the HtmlEditorExtender includes an event handler for the ImageUploadComplete event. The code for this event handler is below: using System.Web.UI; using AjaxControlToolkit; namespace WebApplication1 { public partial class _06_ImageUpload : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void MyHtmlEditorExtender_ImageUploadComplete(object sender, AjaxFileUploadEventArgs e) { // Generate file path string filePath = "~/Images/" + e.FileName; // Save uploaded file to the file system var ajaxFileUpload = (AjaxFileUpload)sender; ajaxFileUpload.SaveAs(MapPath(filePath)); // Update client with saved image path e.PostedUrl = Page.ResolveUrl(filePath); } } } Within the ImageUploadComplete event handler, you need to do two things: 1) Save the uploaded image (for example, to the file system, a database, or Azure storage) 2) Provide the URL to the saved image so the image can be displayed within the HtmlEditorExtender In the code above, the uploaded image is saved to the ~/Images folder. The path of the saved image is returned to the client by setting the AjaxFileUploadEventArgs PostedUrl property. Not surprisingly, under the covers, the HtmlEditorExtender uses the AjaxFileUpload. You can get a direct reference to the AjaxFileUpload control used by an HtmlEditorExtender by using the following code: void Page_Load() { var ajaxFileUpload = MyHtmlEditorExtender.AjaxFileUpload; ajaxFileUpload.AllowedFileTypes = "jpg,jpeg"; } The code above illustrates how you can restrict the types of images that can be uploaded to the HtmlEditorExtender. This code prevents anything but jpeg images from being uploaded. Summary This was the most difficult release of the Ajax Control Toolkit to date. We iterated through several designs for the AjaxFileUpload control – with each iteration, the goal was to make the AjaxFileUpload control easier for developers to use. My hope is that we were able to create a control which Web Forms developers will find very intuitive. I want to thank the developers on the Superexpert.com team for their hard work on this release.

  • Translating with Google Translate without API and C# Code

    - by Rick Strahl
    Some time back I created a data base driven ASP.NET Resource Provider along with some tools that make it easy to edit ASP.NET resources interactively in a Web application. One of the small helper features of the interactive resource admin tool is the ability to do simple translations using both Google Translate and Babelfish. Here's what this looks like in the resource administration form: When a resource is displayed, the user can click a Translate button and it will show the current resource text and then lets you set the source and target languages to translate. The Go button fires the translation for both Google and Babelfish and displays them - pressing use then changes the language of the resource to the target language and sets the resource value to the newly translated value. It's a nice and quick way to get a quick translation going. Ch… Ch… Changes Originally, both implementations basically did some screen scraping of the interactive Web sites and retrieved translated text out of result HTML. Screen scraping is always kind of an iffy proposition as content can be changed easily, but surprisingly that code worked for many years without fail. Recently however, Google at least changed their input pages to use AJAX callbacks and the page updates no longer worked the same way. End result: The Google translate code was broken. Now, Google does have an official API that you can access, but the API is being deprecated and you actually need to have an API key. Since I have public samples that people can download the API key is an issue if I want people to have the samples work out of the box - the only way I could even do this is by sharing my API key (not allowed).   However, after a bit of spelunking and playing around with the public site however I found that Google's interactive translate page actually makes callbacks using plain public access without an API key. By intercepting some of those AJAX calls and calling them directly from code I was able to get translation back up and working with minimal fuss, by parsing out the JSON these AJAX calls return. I don't think this particular Warning: This is hacky code, but after a fair bit of testing I found this to work very well with all sorts of languages and accented and escaped text etc. as long as you stick to small blocks of translated text. I thought I'd share it in case anybody else had been relying on a screen scraping mechanism like I did and needed a non-API based replacement. Here's the code: /// <summary> /// Translates a string into another language using Google's translate API JSON calls. /// <seealso>Class TranslationServices</seealso> /// </summary> /// <param name="Text">Text to translate. Should be a single word or sentence.</param> /// <param name="FromCulture"> /// Two letter culture (en of en-us, fr of fr-ca, de of de-ch) /// </param> /// <param name="ToCulture"> /// Two letter culture (as for FromCulture) /// </param> public string TranslateGoogle(string text, string fromCulture, string toCulture) { fromCulture = fromCulture.ToLower(); toCulture = toCulture.ToLower(); // normalize the culture in case something like en-us was passed // retrieve only en since Google doesn't support sub-locales string[] tokens = fromCulture.Split('-'); if (tokens.Length > 1) fromCulture = tokens[0]; // normalize ToCulture tokens = toCulture.Split('-'); if (tokens.Length > 1) toCulture = tokens[0]; string url = string.Format(@"http://translate.google.com/translate_a/t?client=j&text={0}&hl=en&sl={1}&tl={2}", HttpUtility.UrlEncode(text),fromCulture,toCulture); // Retrieve Translation with HTTP GET call string html = null; try { WebClient web = new WebClient(); // MUST add a known browser user agent or else response encoding doen't return UTF-8 (WTF Google?) web.Headers.Add(HttpRequestHeader.UserAgent, "Mozilla/5.0"); web.Headers.Add(HttpRequestHeader.AcceptCharset, "UTF-8"); // Make sure we have response encoding to UTF-8 web.Encoding = Encoding.UTF8; html = web.DownloadString(url); } catch (Exception ex) { this.ErrorMessage = Westwind.Globalization.Resources.Resources.ConnectionFailed + ": " + ex.GetBaseException().Message; return null; } // Extract out trans":"...[Extracted]...","from the JSON string string result = Regex.Match(html, "trans\":(\".*?\"),\"", RegexOptions.IgnoreCase).Groups[1].Value; if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(result)) { this.ErrorMessage = Westwind.Globalization.Resources.Resources.InvalidSearchResult; return null; } //return WebUtils.DecodeJsString(result); // Result is a JavaScript string so we need to deserialize it properly JavaScriptSerializer ser = new JavaScriptSerializer(); return ser.Deserialize(result, typeof(string)) as string; } To use the code is straightforward enough - simply provide a string to translate and a pair of two letter source and target languages: string result = service.TranslateGoogle("Life is great and one is spoiled when it goes on and on and on", "en", "de"); TestContext.WriteLine(result); How it works The code to translate is fairly straightforward. It basically uses the URL I snagged from the Google Translate Web Page slightly changed to return a JSON result (&client=j) instead of the funky nested PHP style JSON array that the default returns. The JSON result returned looks like this: {"sentences":[{"trans":"Das Leben ist großartig und man wird verwöhnt, wenn es weiter und weiter und weiter geht","orig":"Life is great and one is spoiled when it goes on and on and on","translit":"","src_translit":""}],"src":"en","server_time":24} I use WebClient to make an HTTP GET call to retrieve the JSON data and strip out part of the full JSON response that contains the actual translated text. Since this is a JSON response I need to deserialize the JSON string in case it's encoded (for upper/lower ASCII chars or quotes etc.). Couple of odd things to note in this code: First note that a valid user agent string must be passed (or at least one starting with a common browser identification - I use Mozilla/5.0). Without this Google doesn't encode the result with UTF-8, but instead uses a ISO encoding that .NET can't easily decode. Google seems to ignore the character set header and use the user agent instead which is - odd to say the least. The other is that the code returns a full JSON response. Rather than use the full response and decode it into a custom type that matches Google's result object, I just strip out the translated text. Yeah I know that's hacky but avoids an extra type and firing up the JavaScript deserializer. My internal version uses a small DecodeJsString() method to decode Javascript without the overhead of a full JSON parser. It's obviously not rocket science but as mentioned above what's nice about it is that it works without an Google API key. I can't vouch on how many translates you can do before there are cut offs but in my limited testing running a few stress tests on a Web server under load I didn't run into any problems. Limitations There are some restrictions with this: It only works on single words or single sentences - multiple sentences (delimited by .) are cut off at the ".". There is also a length limitation which appears to happen at around 220 characters or so. While that may not sound  like much for typical word or phrase translations this this is plenty of length. Use with a grain of salt - Google seems to be trying to limit their exposure to usage of the Translate APIs so this code might break in the future, but for now at least it works. FWIW, I also found that Google's translation is not as good as Babelfish, especially for contextual content like sentences. Google is faster, but Babelfish tends to give better translations. This is why in my translation tool I show both Google and Babelfish values retrieved. You can check out the code for this in the West Wind West Wind Web Toolkit's TranslationService.cs file which contains both the Google and Babelfish translation code pieces. Ironically the Babelfish code has been working forever using screen scraping and continues to work just fine today. I think it's a good idea to have multiple translation providers in case one is down or changes its format, hence the dual display in my translation form above. I hope this has been helpful to some of you - I've actually had many small uses for this code in a number of applications and it's sweet to have a simple routine that performs these operations for me easily. • Creating a Dynamic DataRow for easier DataRow Syntax

    - by Rick Strahl
    I've been thrown back into an older project that uses DataSets and DataRows as their entity storage model. I have several applications internally that I still maintain that run just fine (and I sometimes wonder if this wasn't easier than all this ORM crap we deal with with 'newer' improved technology today - but I disgress) but use this older code. For the most part DataSets/DataTables/DataRows are abstracted away in a pseudo entity model, but in some situations like queries DataTables and DataRows are still surfaced to the business layer. Here's an example. Here's a business object method that runs dynamic query and the code ends up looping over the result set using the ugly DataRow Array syntax:public int UpdateAllSafeTitles() { int result = this.Execute("select pk, title, safetitle from " + Tablename + " where EntryType=1", "TPks"); if (result < 0) return result; result = 0; foreach (DataRow row in this.DataSet.Tables["TPks"].Rows) { string title = row["title"] as string; string safeTitle = row["safeTitle"] as string; int pk = (int)row["pk"]; string newSafeTitle = this.GetSafeTitle(title); if (newSafeTitle != safeTitle) { this.ExecuteNonQuery("update " + this.Tablename + " set safeTitle=@safeTitle where pk=@pk", this.CreateParameter("@safeTitle",newSafeTitle), this.CreateParameter("@pk",pk) ); result++; } } return result; } The problem with looping over DataRow objecs is two fold: The array syntax is tedious to type and not real clear to look at, and explicit casting is required in order to do anything useful with the values. I've highlighted the place where this matters. Using the DynamicDataRow class I'll show in a minute this code can be changed to look like this:public int UpdateAllSafeTitles() { int result = this.Execute("select pk, title, safetitle from " + Tablename + " where EntryType=1", "TPks"); if (result < 0) return result; result = 0; foreach (DataRow row in this.DataSet.Tables["TPks"].Rows) { dynamic entry = new DynamicDataRow(row); string newSafeTitle = this.GetSafeTitle(entry.title); if (newSafeTitle != entry.safeTitle) { this.ExecuteNonQuery("update " + this.Tablename + " set safeTitle=@safeTitle where pk=@pk", this.CreateParameter("@safeTitle",newSafeTitle), this.CreateParameter("@pk",entry.pk) ); result++; } } return result; } The code looks much a bit more natural and describes what's happening a little nicer as well. Well, using the new dynamic features in .NET it's actually quite easy to implement the DynamicDataRow class. Creating your own custom Dynamic Objects .NET 4.0 introduced the Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) and opened up a whole bunch of new capabilities for .NET applications. The dynamic type is an easy way to avoid Reflection and directly access members of 'dynamic' or 'late bound' objects at runtime. There's a lot of very subtle but extremely useful stuff that dynamic does (especially for COM Interop scenearios) but in its simplest form it often allows you to do away with manual Reflection at runtime. In addition you can create DynamicObject implementations that can perform  custom interception of member accesses and so allow you to provide more natural access to more complex or awkward data structures like the DataRow that I use as an example here. Bascially you can subclass DynamicObject and then implement a few methods (TryGetMember, TrySetMember, TryInvokeMember) to provide the ability to return dynamic results from just about any data structure using simple property/method access. In the code above, I created a custom DynamicDataRow class which inherits from DynamicObject and implements only TryGetMember and TrySetMember. Here's what simple class looks like:/// <summary> /// This class provides an easy way to turn a DataRow /// into a Dynamic object that supports direct property /// access to the DataRow fields. /// /// The class also automatically fixes up DbNull values /// (null into .NET and DbNUll to DataRow) /// </summary> public class DynamicDataRow : DynamicObject { /// <summary> /// Instance of object passed in /// </summary> DataRow DataRow; /// <summary> /// Pass in a DataRow to work off /// </summary> /// <param name="instance"></param> public DynamicDataRow(DataRow dataRow) { DataRow = dataRow; } /// <summary> /// Returns a value from a DataRow items array. /// If the field doesn't exist null is returned. /// DbNull values are turned into .NET nulls. /// /// </summary> /// <param name="binder"></param> /// <param name="result"></param> /// <returns></returns> public override bool TryGetMember(GetMemberBinder binder, out object result) { result = null; try { result = DataRow[binder.Name]; if (result == DBNull.Value) result = null; return true; } catch { } result = null; return false; } /// <summary> /// Property setter implementation tries to retrieve value from instance /// first then into this object /// </summary> /// <param name="binder"></param> /// <param name="value"></param> /// <returns></returns> public override bool TrySetMember(SetMemberBinder binder, object value) { try { if (value == null) value = DBNull.Value; DataRow[binder.Name] = value; return true; } catch {} return false; } } To demonstrate the basic features here's a short test: [TestMethod] [ExpectedException(typeof(RuntimeBinderException))] public void BasicDataRowTests() { DataTable table = new DataTable("table"); table.Columns.Add( new DataColumn() { ColumnName = "Name", DataType=typeof(string) }); table.Columns.Add( new DataColumn() { ColumnName = "Entered", DataType=typeof(DateTime) }); table.Columns.Add(new DataColumn() { ColumnName = "NullValue", DataType = typeof(string) }); DataRow row = table.NewRow(); DateTime now = DateTime.Now; row["Name"] = "Rick"; row["Entered"] = now; row["NullValue"] = null; // converted in DbNull dynamic drow = new DynamicDataRow(row); string name = drow.Name; DateTime entered = drow.Entered; string nulled = drow.NullValue; Assert.AreEqual(name, "Rick"); Assert.AreEqual(entered,now); Assert.IsNull(nulled); // this should throw a RuntimeBinderException Assert.AreEqual(entered,drow.enteredd); } The DynamicDataRow requires a custom constructor that accepts a single parameter that sets the DataRow. Once that's done you can access property values that match the field names. Note that types are automatically converted - no type casting is needed in the code you write. The class also automatically converts DbNulls to regular nulls and vice versa which is something that makes it much easier to deal with data returned from a database. What's cool here isn't so much the functionality - even if I'd prefer to leave DataRow behind ASAP -  but the fact that we can create a dynamic type that uses a DataRow as it's 'DataSource' to serve member values. It's pretty useful feature if you think about it, especially given how little code it takes to implement. By implementing these two simple methods we get to provide two features I was complaining about at the beginning that are missing from the DataRow: Direct Property Syntax Automatic Type Casting so no explicit casts are required Caveats As cool and easy as this functionality is, it's important to understand that it doesn't come for free. The dynamic features in .NET are - well - dynamic. Which means they are essentially evaluated at runtime (late bound). Rather than static typing where everything is compiled and linked by the compiler/linker, member invokations are looked up at runtime and essentially call into your custom code. There's some overhead in this. Direct invocations - the original code I showed - is going to be faster than the equivalent dynamic code. However, in the above code the difference of running the dynamic code and the original data access code was very minor. The loop running over 1500 result records took on average 13ms with the original code and 14ms with the dynamic code. Not exactly a serious performance bottleneck. One thing to remember is that Microsoft optimized the DLR code significantly so that repeated calls to the same operations are routed very efficiently which actually makes for very fast evaluation. The bottom line for performance with dynamic code is: Make sure you test and profile your code if you think that there might be a performance issue. However, in my experience with dynamic types so far performance is pretty good for repeated operations (ie. in loops). While usually a little slower the perf hit is a lot less typically than equivalent Reflection work. Although the code in the second example looks like standard object syntax, dynamic is not static code. It's evaluated at runtime and so there's no type recognition until runtime. This means no Intellisense at development time, and any invalid references that call into 'properties' (ie. fields in the DataRow) that don't exist still cause runtime errors. So in the case of the data row you still get a runtime error if you mistype a column name:// this should throw a RuntimeBinderException Assert.AreEqual(entered,drow.enteredd); Dynamic - Lots of uses The arrival of Dynamic types in .NET has been met with mixed emotions. Die hard .NET developers decry dynamic types as an abomination to the language. After all what dynamic accomplishes goes against all that a static language is supposed to provide. On the other hand there are clearly scenarios when dynamic can make life much easier (COM Interop being one place). Think of the possibilities. What other data structures would you like to expose to a simple property interface rather than some sort of collection or dictionary? And beyond what I showed here you can also implement 'Method missing' behavior on objects with InvokeMember which essentially allows you to create dynamic methods. It's all very flexible and maybe just as important: It's easy to do. There's a lot of power hidden in this seemingly simple interface.
