  I have Virtual Box 3.1.4 installed. Host - Snow Leopard(Mac) Guest - Windows 7 (32-bit). I have installed Windows on my MAC because I need it for work. I cannot establish VPN connection (using NAT). I tried to use bridged adapter, and I lost my internet connection on my guest(wind7) completely. I don't know much about networking, so I need detailed instructions for his particular OSs. Could someone please help me with this? Some random details about my attempts: On my host Windows I get error 800 trying to VPN. I can ping server address from my guest Win 7 and I have VPN connection established from my host Mac. I do disable VPN on my Mac when tying to establish it through guest. I tried to VPN from Mac and see if Guest sees it. It doesn't. Thank you!

  When it comes to computers, Windows definitely rules the desktop in comparison to other operating systems. What we would like to know this week is if you would actually be willing to give up using Windows altogether and move to a different operating system on your computers. Note: This week’s Ask the Readers post is posing a hypothetical situation, so please refrain from starting arguments or a flame war in the comments. Good reasoned discussion is always welcome. There is no doubt that Windows is the dominant operating system in use today. Everywhere you go or look it is easy to find computers with Windows installed such as at work, home, the library, government offices, and more. For many people it is the operating system that they know and are comfortable with, which makes changing to a different operating system less appealing. Adding to the preference for Windows (or dependency based on your view) is the custom software that many businesses use on a daily basis. Throw in the high volume of people who depend on and use Microsoft Office as a standard for their business documents and it is little wonder that Windows is so dominant. So what would you use if you did decide to take a break from or permanently move away from Windows? If your choice is Linux then you have a large and wonderful variety of distributions to choose from based on what you want out of your system. Want a distribution that is easy to work with? You could choose Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or others that are engineered to be ready to go “out of the box”. Like a challenge? Perhaps Arch Linux is more your style. One of the most attractive features of all about Linux is the price…it is very hard to beat free! Maybe Mac OS X sounds like the perfect choice. It has a certain mystique and elegance associated with it and many OS X fans refuse to use anything else if given a choice. Then there is the soon to be released Chrome OS with its’ emphasis on cloud computing. This is a system that is definitely focused on being as low-maintenance and hassle-free as possible. Quick on, quick off, minimalist, and made to be portable. All of the system’s updates will occur automatically leaving you free to work and play in the cloud. But it does have its’ limitations…no installing all of those custom apps that you love using on Windows or other systems…it is literally all about the browsing window and web apps. So there you have it. If the opportunity presented itself would you, could you give Windows up and use a different operating system? Would it be easy or hard for you to do? Perhaps it would not really matter so long as you could do what you needed or wanted to do on a computer. And maybe this is the perfect time to try something new and find out…that new favorite operating system could be just an install disc away. Let us know your thoughts in the comments! • Repercussions of Raising Domain Functional Level to 2008 on Mac computers running 10.6.2 with OD

  We have recently replaced all of our 2003 server domain controllers to 2008 r2 and have tried to implement PSO's but have found that the domain functional level must be raised to 2008. We have a mac server in our environment that runs open directory and it is integrated into AD. Does anyone know if I do raise the domain functional level (which makes sense since we only have 2008 r2 domain controllers) what the repercussions (if any) there will be on the macs in the environment? Macs are running 10.6.2 and mac server runs the same. Mac server is running OD and also bound to AD.

  I'm trying to find information how do we take a screenshot on Windows 7 that will actually create a screenshot file like .png in to your desktop like on mac where you can do it by press Command+Control+Shift+4. In windows all I know is that I can do it by press press = Windows captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. or for the Active windows I can just do hold and press = Windows captures only the currently active window and copies it to the clipboard. Right now I'm using maComFort which it gives me functionality of Mac like keyboard that I can take screenshot in such the same way with Mac OS X but really it changes many of the key in my keyboard in the way I don't like. So I wonder if there is a better way?

  In Mac os x, I can move all windows to the nearest corner by hitting F11 key. I'm just wondering if there is a compiz plugin works like that. I know that there is Scale plugin already. But all that I want is something like this. You'll see, press a key and all windows fly off to nearest corner so I can drag/drop file or do something else on my desktop, then press the key again and all windows fly back.

  Everytime I click on a link from within Mac, parallels boots up my Windows VM and opens the link there. That's super annoying and I haven't found a configuration to change it. In the settings of my Windows VM there is an option where to launch the webbrowser. However that seems to only affect links that I open from within my Windows session. UPDATE I just stumbled across this answer: How to disassociate a file type with an application in Mac OS So I disabled "share windows apps with mac" completely. Also this seems to be overly protective it at least does the trick. I think it also deactivates that running windows apps show up in the dock but I don't care that much about that anyway.

• Why is the network speed on my Mac Pro (early 2009) so slow?

  I have a really weird networking issue on my Mac Pro (Early 2009). I can’t get higher network speeds than about 2MBit/s. It doesn’t matter if this is over AirPort or one of the Ethernet ports. An iMac and a Mac mini in the same network with almost the same configuration get about 25-30 MBit/s. I’ve read a couple of things about this on the official Apple forums, but there is no helpful information. Anyone else with Mac Pro network speed issues and who knows how to solve them?

• Is it possible to use mac trackpad gestures on a linux virtualbox? (macbook pro)

  Specifically, I would just love to use the trackpad to do "three finger swipes" and switch between workspaces, that would just be slick as hell. I imagine this might require a plugin or some such thing, in addition to the disabling of the underlying mac os's responding to the gestures, which is what it currently does. This might be impossible. PS/FYI: I am running ubuntu, but I imagine this might apply to debian builds as well.

  This is driving me up the wall just a bit. I have a new Samsung Wave mobile phone. It is running the Bada OS. The mobile phone does not come with anyone software for the Mac. The Kies desktop interface is only available for Windows. I did try installing the Kies software in a VM with Parallels 5 but it did not detect the phone connected via USB. I tried using Bluetooth file exchange on the Mac; it lets me browse the file system on the Wave phone but not actually see any of the media files; I just get empty directory views. But I am able to access files using media sharing with the Wave phone and my PS3. So what would be a Mac desks top app that can be used a media sharing browser?

  Is there any program or way to make Mac OS X's ?(command)-tab behave like Windows' alt-tab? That is, instead of switching between applications, to switch between windows of all applications. I do know there's a way to switch between windows of the same application, but that's not what I want either. I'm not just trying to make Mac OS X behave like my recent former OS, I've been a Mac user for over two years and before that Ubuntu. After using Expose and ?-tab I think Windows' or Ubuntu's alt-tab is better.

• If I want to dual-boot Ubuntu with another OS, what partitioning method should I use?

  I have Ubuntu running as a vm in VirtualBox at the moment, but in the future, if I want to dual-boot it with Windows or another OS installed on my hard-drive, what partitioning method should I use to make room for it? 1)Manually partition my hard drive via disk management in Windows (or the equivalent in another OS), making appropriate room for the main partition upon which Ubuntu will be installed and swap space; 2)Partition via the Ubuntu installer options; 3)Use gparted or another free tool like it. I am uncertain as to why I would want to use one over the other. Lastly, am I correct to think that it would be the acme of foolishness to try to partition drives within a virtual machine (since that partitioning would be inherently limited to the limitations set upon it by the virtualization software, e.g., VirtualBox)? Thanks! P.S. Oh, and I am also planning on not modifying the MBR of Windows if I ever do dual-boot with Ubuntu, using instead a piece of free software (like easyBCD or something) to avoid the headaches of Grub being overwritten by a Windows update.

• Parallels: How to see a Mac-hosted website from Windows?

  I'm traveling at the moment, and have moved one of the websites I'm working on to my MBP so I can work on it without a network connection. I've made an addition to the Mac's /etc/hosts file pointing the domain name to 127.0.0.1, and all's well. I now want to get into Parallels and check the site from Windows browsers. How do I get things so that the Windows browser will understand the domain name and access the site? The Windows image obviously doesn't recognize / can't find the Mac's /etc/hosts file, and references to 127.0.0.1 in the Windows hosts file just as obviously point to Windows, not the Mac. Any advice out there? Thanks!

  OSX is my host OS I have windows xp and Ubuntu 10.10 on guest OS. They both work great. When I eject USB flash drive from host OS, it appears in windows guest OS but it does not appear in Ubuntu Guest OS. I never run both guest OS at the same time. its always either or. I am running, VM virtualbox 4.1.10 and installed latest guest additions and also installed VM virtualbox extension pack. Thanks for your help

• While in CMD shell, copying files from host OS to guest VM locks files (VMware Player/Workstation)

  We're running the latest versions of VMWare Player and Workstation for Windows. The following behavior is identical across both products. Problem: We open a CMD prompt in our guest OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7) and copy files from our host OS using the standard CMD shell copy command: copy z:\C$\testfiles The copy completes successfully, but from that point forward, all the files that were copied to our guest OS are now LOCKED on our host OS. This does not happen if we use Windows Explorer to copy files - it only happens when files are copied via the CMD shell. As mentioned at the start of this question, this behavior is reproducible in both VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation across multiple machines and multiple guest OS's. I've googled for a workaround, but without success. Any ideas appreciated. Malcolm

  It seems that I have more trouble getting standard Unix things to run on Snow Leopard than any other platform--including Windows cygwin For the past couple of days, I've been trying to get ImageMagick to run on Snow Leopard. The most obvious way, Mac Ports, fails: tppllc-Mac-Pro:ImageMagick-sl swirsky$ sudo port install imagemagick ---> Computing dependencies for p5-locale-gettext ---> Configuring p5-locale-gettext Error: Target org.macports.configure returned: configure failure: shell command " cd "/opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_perl_p5-locale-gettext/work/gettext-1.05" && /opt/local/bin/perl Makefile.PL INSTALLDIRS=vendor " returned error 2 Command output: checking for gettext... no checking for gettext in -I/opt/local/include -arch i386 -L/opt/local/lib -lintl...gettext function not found. So now I'm two steps away from ImageMagick, trying to get a newer libiconv on my machine. I downloaded the latest libiconv, compiled and built it. I put the resulting library in /opt/local/lib, and I still get the same error message: tppllc-Mac-Pro:.libs swirsky$ sudo mv libiconv.2.dylib /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib tppllc-Mac-Pro:.libs swirsky$ convert dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib Referenced from: /opt/local/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib Reason: Incompatible library version: libfontconfig.1.dylib requires version 8.0.0 or later, but libiconv.2.dylib provides version 7.0.0 Trace/BPT trap So here's my question: Is it possible to get ImageMagick to run on OSX Snow Leopard? • Technically why is processes in Erlang more efficient than OS threads?

  Spawning processes seam to be much more efficient in Erlang than starting new threads using the OS (i.e. by using Java or C). Erlang spawns thousands and millions of processes in a short period of time. I know that they are different since Erlang do per process GC and processes in Erlang are implemented the same way on all platforms which isn't the case with OS threads. But I don't fully understand technically why Erlang processes are so much more efficient and has much smaller memory footprint per process. Both the OS and Erlang VM has to do scheduling, context switches and keep track of the values in the registers and so on... Simply why isn't OS threads implemented in the same way as processes in Erlang? Does it have to support something more? and why does it need a bigger memory footprint? Technically why is processes in Erlang more efficient than OS threads? And why can't threads in the OS be implemented and managed in the same efficient way?

• How can I set up a git repository on windows, and then push to/pull from it on Mac OSX

  I'm trying to set up a Windows-based web server, but do the development work on Mac OSX. I installed freeSSHd and msysGit on the Windows server, and set up a repository where I want it. I also have git on my Mac and set up a repo there too. When I try to clone, pull from, or push to the windows repo via SSH, it gives me an error, "fatal: protocol error: bad line length character" It doesn't matter what I set the remote to in my client (Mac OSX) machine - I can point it to a folder that doesn't exist and it still gives me that error. I also tried this on a Linux box I have sitting around and it works perfectly, so it's not my Mac. I have a couple ideas: Maybe freeSSHd isn't behaving correctly (as suggested here) so I could get a different SSH server for Windows - perhaps OpenSSH Perhaps I'm typing the code that combines Mac and Windows file paths incorrectly. I tried: sudo git clone ssh://[email protected]/C:/Users/[my_username]/[remote_repo_name]/.git [destination] and sudo git clone ssh://[email protected]/C:\Users\[my_username]\[remote_repo_name]\.git [destination] I'm getting the same error with both of these. Does anybody know what's going wrong? Better yet, is there anybody out there that has managed to do what I want to do (push to and pull from a windows repository via SSH)? Thanks!
