• Virtual Earth / Bing maps javascript file size

  I am working with a site that uses virtual earth for its mapping. Unfortunately the file size of the referenced javascript file, ecn.dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=6.2, is 200 something kb before being expanded (to 970kb). As our site runs under https this file is not cached on the client, and can cause a few seconds delay to users, made more substantial in times of high load. My question is, is there anyway to get virtual earth to run smaller, or have more efficient lazy loading? At the moment it looks like our hands are tied.

What are some strategies/tools or ideas you all have for accomplishing this task? I was at an Interactive Agency, where we needed to keep track of client DB, ftp, mail... and for different environments for the app so any one client would have up to 3-10 passwords usually.   i've registered a domain, and went to create a google apps account with that. but google told me they don't accept .ir domains, possibly trying to prevent us from building bombs (which completely makes sense), or simply lack of interest. anyway. so now i'm seeking for a way to use gmail, but with my own domain name, all without using google apps. i've added my domain to a free dnspark.net account, and it doesn't have mail forwarding, but i can set MX records. is there anyway i could accomplish my task? or is it completely impossible?

• XFS and loss of data when power goes down

  Each time electricity goes down, my desktop (without UPS) loses some temporary information. Opera can lose settings, history, cache, or mail accounts (Thanks heavens I was wise to use IMAP). Partially or all together. a whole file (complete and save) in Geany appeared empty (and I didn't commit it to Git) rhythmbox lost all podcasts subscription data I'm afraid there are other losses I just didn't see. What's the reason? A memory files cache, a mem-disk? Or non-atomic file writes in xfs? I have Ubuntu 9.10 and XFS on both / and /home partitions. Is ext4 safer in such circumstances? I've seen ext3 is faster. Is it as safe as *4? Given that the apartment I rent is connected to a common bus and 1 safety switch for several apartments, and the neighbors - alone or together - overload it at least once every week, the lights go down often enough for this to be an issue.

• Where is the actual content in a TCP segment

  When I email something or download a program, or do anything else over a network, where in the segment is the actual content? If I am emailing a 20KB word document, and the maximum data field size in a segment is 1500 bytes, does that mean it takes about 14 segments to mail my document wherever it is going? I get, I think, the OSI model and I have a decent grasp of the IP protocol. I think I understand the concept of header wrapping of each successive layer in the protocol stack. What I can't get a definitive answer to is where does the actual content go in a TCP segment? Is that the datagram? Maybe the fact I am asking proves I have no clue... Many thanks.

  I'm using 64bit Centos Dom0 with: 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5xen #1 SMP Wed Mar 17 12:04:23 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux recently i migrated some 32bit Centos domUs on this node. As by specs 32bit domUs should work with 64bit dom0. DomUs are paravirtualized, and everything works, except iptables limit. • Printing a PDF in .NET

  It's the "printing question guy" again. Looking for a third-party solution to print PDFs, preferable from a service. I have seen some arguments against it, but due to our use case, this really is the preferred solution - the service will be receiving messages from a messaging bus, and there shouldn't be any sort of delay between the receipt of that message and the printing of the report. So far, I've found 1 solution from PDF Tools that seems very nice, and very flexible. The problem is that it's licensed per server. If anyone knows of any third-party solutions that have a seat license (per developer, unlimited runtime distribution), that would be much preferred. EDIT: Clarification, by printing, I mean sending the PDF to a printer.

• Mac OS X Server add server user

  What's the recommended way to add a user to Mac OS X Server that doesn't need all the hoopla associated with Workgroup Manager? There are many users pre-configured in Mac OS X Server (www, root, ldapadmin, etc.) that don't have "Full Name" or mail accounts, etc. I'd like to create a 'svn' user to be the owner of our Subversion Repository as per this tutorial: If you've decided to use either Apache or stock svnserve, create a single svn user on your system and run the server process as that user. Be sure to make the repository directory wholly owned by the svn user as well. From a security point of view, this keeps the repository data nicely siloed and protected by operating system filesystem permissions, changeable by only the Sub- version server process itself. Wondering if there's a way outside of WorkgroupManager and OpenDirectory as this account will be entirely server based. Is this still sound advice under OS X Server? If so what's the easiest way to create the user (Mac OS X Server doesn't seem to respond to useradd).

• Android SDK - Animation prevents further events on View like OnClick()

  I have an ImageView which is animated via startAnimation() to slide it into the screen. It is visible and enabled in the XML. When I add a Handler for a delay or an onClick event, nothing happens. When I remove the startAnimation() everything works fine. Except the animation of course. Heres my code: balloon.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View view) { view.setVisibility(View.GONE); } }); Animation dropDown = AnimationUtils.loadAnimation(context, R.anim.balloon_slide_down); dropDown.setStartOffset(1500); balloon.startAnimation(dropDown); Any ideas why that is? • Is it possible to disable the retry mechanism in Exim

  I have a very simple Exim configuration that's just forwarding all mail to a set of destination addresses. When immediate delivery to an address fails, the message is added to the queue (and then processed by the retry rules). I want to change this so that if immediately delivery fails, the message is :blackhole:d. (It's ok if a bounce is generated instead, as I'll just redirect the bounce to the :blackhole:). This needs to occur for temporary failures (i.e. 4xx) as well as permanent (i.e. 5xx) ones. I understand that this means that if delivery can't be done immediately the message will be permanently and irretrievably lost. In this particular context, that isn't a problem. Reading over this, it sounds suspiciously like "how can I improve my spamming Exim server". That really isn't what this is for, and if you can figure out a way I can prove that, I'm happy to do so!

  So I installed Windows Server 2008 R2, I have Exchange 2010 running for some mail. I installed BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express for kicks. This server runs dns/dhcp for 2 laptops. But what now? It has 200g's free on the main drive and a 150g external that I have mapped as a network drive. I am not sure what else to do with this thing. It was my main station but since my laptop is nicer I am running it headless and using the lcd monitor for it as a second monitor for the laptop when I am at home.

  I am trying to get Virtualmin setup and have reached a point where my noobish sysadmin skills aren't getting the job done. This is the message I get now when I try and refresh the configuration of Virtualmin. BIND DNS server is installed, and the system is configured to use it. However, the default master DNS server XXXXXX is not a fully qualified domain name. Sendmail is only accepting SMTP connections on the following ports : 127.0.0.1 port smtp. Email from other systems on the Internet will not be accepted. This can be changed in the Sendmail Mail Server module. Please advise what I need to do to get Sendmail configured properly. Thanks!

• Does Outlook continue to auto-discover account settings for already configured accounts? Can it be prevented?

  fail2ban just locked me out of our website because something from my desktop was hammering port 443 on the server (which is not in use). I saw my IP also requesting "GET /autodiscover/autodiscover.xml HTTP/1.1", so I assume that's what's going on on port 443 as well. But I only have 1 email account configured in Outlook and it's working just fine. The account is for the address [email protected] and said server will answer for example.com, but that server is not our MX and it is also not configured as an Exchange server in my mail account. So, why is Outlook still trying to retrieve those auto-configuration settings?

• activesync not working with forms based authentication

  I have an Exchange 2003 SP2 single backend server with an SSL cert. I was having trouble getting OMA to work so I found a MS article about making a reg hack and creating a new Exchange-OMA virtual directory. I am able to connect and access content from my mailbox by using secure mail.domainname.com/oma and using my credentials. ActiveSync was not working on a Windows mobile phone or iPhone. I found another article about using Forms Based Authenication and SSL on a single Exchange server environment and the fix was to elliminate FBA and SSL for the Exchange virtual directory. That allows ActiveSync to now work. I have very few mobile users, but they are management, so I need to make ActiveSync work but I would like to get back to using SSL. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379 Any ideas about this setup? • Best way to restore individual folders via Time Machine after clean Lion install?

  I'm doing a clean erase and install of Lion, and am looking for the best way to restore individual folders into my home directory via Time Machine. I've done a dummy run, clean Lion install, then 'browse other disks' in Time Machine, navigate to my home folder and 'restore' what I need, such as pictures/music and folders inside the .library folder (such as Mail and Keychains). N.b I do not want to use the migration assistant, or 'restore OS from Time Machine' - as I specifically want to do a clean install, and just copy over what I need (some folders will be moved onto a separate disk to the OS, and some will remain on the same disk).   I bought a Macbook Pro last week. I mostly use (and plan to use) it like a desktop with an external monitor. I use the system at least 15 hours a day. Now using the coconut battery application, I figured out that the capacity has the current capacity has reduced to 98% of the design capacity. I was wondering what is the best way to manage battery. Should it be always either charging or discharging Should it be plugged in all time. I barely get 2 hours and 30 minutes on battery. Is that normal? I run XCode, VMWare Fusion (for Visual Studio), Mail app, Chrome (5-10 tabs) and Itunes (mp3). The brightness is 60% on battery. I already did the calibration.

• Java dropping half of UDP packets

  Greetings, I have a simple client/server setup. The server is in C and the client that is querying the server is Java. My problem is that, when I send bandwidth-intensive data over the connection, such as Video frames, it drops up to half the packets. I make sure that I properly fragment the udp packets on the server side (udp has a max payload length of 2^16). I verified that the server is sending the packets (printf the result of sendto()). But java doesn't seem to be getting half the data. Furthermore, when I switch to TCP, all the video frames get through but the latency starts to build up, adding several seconds delay after a few seconds of runtime. Is there anything obvious that I'm missing? I just can't seem to figure this out. Thanks, Andrew

• Automated git push attempt does not work - authentication issue

  I'm trying to automate a very periodic git add/commit/push cycle using a shell script and cron under OS X 10.8.5. The script is as basic as one would expect it to be: cd /my/directory git add . git commit -m "a commit message with the date" git push -u origin master I've tried running it both as root as well as a non-root user. When I do this manually, I get a dialog box from OS X requesting that I authenticate the operation. Running the script (either using cron or just using sh) ends up sending a message (via mail) to whichever user's cron executed the script saying that it was unable to write a file in the .git directory because of a permissions issue (which is most likely manual execution requires authentication). Is there any way to circumvent this issue, or give the script permission to perform this operation without having me intervene each time?

• How to legitimately work around ISP rate limits

  A lot of ISP rate limit the amount of e-mails that is sent from a particular IP address. What is the proper way to get around that rate limit? Our company has an iPhone application that sends many e-mails because of our large user base and many e-mails go to different ISPs that rate limit the number of messages coming from a specific IP. We do not send spam and we are a legitimate business. However, is there a better way to resolve this limitation rather than just getting a ton of IP addresses? Ideally, I wouldn't want to rely on a third party service to send mail. However, if its the only possible solution, we would consider.
