• RemoveHandler Issues with Custom Events

  This is a case of things being more complicated that I thought they should be. Since it took a while to figure this one out, I thought it was worth explaining and putting all of the pieces to the answer in one spot. Let me set the stage. Architecturally, I have the notion of generic producers and consumers. These put items onto, and remove items from, a queue. This provides a generic, thread-safe mechanism to load balance the creation and processing of work items in our application. Part of the IProducer(Of T) interface is: 1: Public Interface IProducer(Of T) 2: Event ItemProduced(ByVal sender As IProducer(Of T), ByVal item As T) 3: Event ProductionComplete(ByVal sender As IProducer(Of T)) 4: End Interface Nothing sinister there, is there? In order to simplify our developers’ lives, I wrapped the queue with some functionality to manage the produces and consumers. Since the developer can specify the number of producers and consumers that are spun up, the queue code manages adding event handlers as the producers and consumers are instantiated. Now, we’ve been having some memory leaks and, in order to eliminate the possibility that this was caused by weak references to event handles, I wanted to remove them. This is where it got dicey. My first attempt looked like this: 1: For Each producer As P In Producers 2: RemoveHandler producer.ItemProduced, AddressOf ItemProducedHandler 3: RemoveHandler producer.ProductionComplete, AddressOf ProductionCompleteHandler 4: producer.Dispose() 5: Next What you can’t see in my posted code are the warnings this caused. The 'AddressOf' expression has no effect in this context because the method argument to 'AddressOf' requires a relaxed conversion to the delegate type of the event. Assign the 'AddressOf' expression to a variable, and use the variable to add or remove the method as the handler.  Now, what on earth does that mean? Well, a quick Bing search uncovered a whole bunch of talk about delegates. The first solution I found just changed all parameters in the event handler to Object. Sorry, but no. I used generics precisely because I wanted type safety, not because I wanted to use Object. More searching. Eventually, I found this forum post, where Jeff Shan revealed a missing piece of the puzzle. The other revelation came from Lian_ZA in this post. However, these two only hinted at the solution. Trying some of what they suggested led to finally getting an invalid cast exception that revealed the existence of ItemProducedEventHandler. Hold on a minute! I didn’t create that delegate. There’s nothing even close to that name in my code… except the ItemProduced event in the interface. Could it be? Naaaaah. Hmmm…. Well, as it turns out, there is a delegate created by the compiler for each event. By explicitly creating a delegate that refers to the method in question, implicitly cast to the generated delegate type, I was able to remove the handlers: 1: For Each producer As P In Producers 2: Dim _itemProducedHandler As IProducer(Of T).ItemProducedEventHandler = AddressOf ItemProducedHandler 3: RemoveHandler producer.ItemProduced, _itemProducedHandler 4:  5: Dim _productionCompleteHandler As IProducer(Of T).ProductionCompleteEventHandler = AddressOf ProductionCompleteHandler 6: RemoveHandler producer.ProductionComplete, _productionCompleteHandler 7: producer.Dispose() 8: Next That’s “all” it took to finally be able to remove the event handlers and maintain type-safe code. Hopefully, this will save you the same challenges I had in trying to figure out how to fix this issue!

• XNA - 3D AABB collision detection and response

  I've been fiddling around with 3D AABB collision in my voxel engine for the last couple of days, and every method I've come up with thus far has been almost correct, but each one never quite worked exactly the way I hoped it would. Currently what I do is get two bounding boxes for my entity, one modified by the X translation component and the other by the Z component, and check if each collides with any of the surrounding chunks (chunks have their own octrees that are populated only with blocks that support collision). If there is a collision, then I cast out rays into that chunk to get the shortest collision distance, and set the translation component to that distance if the component is greater than the distance. The problem is that sometimes collisions aren't even registered. Here's a video on YouTube that I created showing what I mean. I suspect the problem may be with the rays that I cast to get the collision distance not being where I think they are, but I'm not entirely sure what would be wrong with them if they are indeed the problem. • QT: trouble with qobject_cast

  I have derived QGraphicsItem and QGraphicsScene classes. I want the items to be able to call scene() and get a derviedGraphicsItem * instead of a QGraphicsItem *, so I reimplemented QGraphicsScene::itemAt to return a derived pointer. DerivedItem* DerivedScene::itemAt( const QPointF &position, const QTransform &dt ) const { return qobject_cast< DerivedItem * >( QGraphicsScene::itemAt(position, dt) ); } I get the following error (Qt 4.6, GCC 4.4.3 on Ubuntut 10.4) scene.cpp: In member function ‘DerivedItem* DerivedScene::itemAt(qreal, qreal, const QTransform&) const’: scene.cpp:28: error: no matching function for call to ‘qobject_cast(QGraphicsItem*)’ I then noticed QGraphicsItem doesn't inherit QObject, so I made my derived QGraphicsItem class have multiple inheritance from QObject and QGraphicsItem, and after adding the Q_OBJECT macro and rebuilding the project I get the same error. Am I going about this the wrong way? I know it's supposed to be bad design to try to cast a parent class as a child, but in this case it seems like what I want, since my derived item class has new functionality and its objects need a way to call that new functionality on items around themselves, and asking the items scene object with itemAt() seems like the best way - but I need itemAt() to return a pointer of the right type. I can get around this by having the derived items cast the QGraphicsItem * returned by QGraphicsScene::itemAt() using dynamic_cast, but I don't really understand why that works and not qobject_cast, or the benefits or disadvantages to using dynamic_cast vs. qobject_cast.

  Background Working in .NET 2.0 Here, reflecting lists in general. I was originally using t.IsAssignableFrom(typeof(IEnumerable)) to detect if a Property I was traversing supported the IEnumerable Interface. (And thus I could cast the object to it safely) However this code was not evaluating to True when the object is a BindingList<T>. Next I tried to use t.IsSubclassOf(typeof(IEnumerable)) and didn't have any luck either. The source of error is found in this code line where the deserialised object is assigned to the instance variable of the class: engineObject = (ENGINE)xSerializer.Deserialize(str); It occurs whenever I try to add one of my UserControls to a Form or to a different UC. All of my UCs have a special presenter that access the above mentioned instance variable of the singleton class.   I notice that Swig provides a whole host of functions to allow for typecasting objects to their parent classes. However, in C++ one can produce a function like the following: A * getAnObject() { if(someBoolean) return (A *) new B; else return (A *) new C; } Where "A" is the parent of classes "B" and "C". One can then typecast the pointer returned into being a "B" type or "C" type at one's convenience like: B * some_var = (B *) getAnObject(); Is there some way I can typecast an object I've received from a generic-pointer-producing function at run-time in the scripting language using the wrappers? (In my case, Lua?) I have a function that could produce one of about a hundred possible classes, and I'd like to avoid writing an enormous switch structure that I'd have to maintain in C++. At the point where I receive the generic pointer, I also have a string representation of the data type I'd like to cast it to. Any thoughts? Thanks! -- EDIT -- I notice that SWIG offers to generate copy constructors for all of my classes.   I wrote a function recently (with help of one guy from SO) that finds maximum of two ints.   First post here, so I hope this is enough detail. I started using freebase-python today to get film information for a program that I’m working on. One thing that I need to grab is a list of actors that starred in a film. I’ve followed some tutorials and guides on the way to do this, and can get a list of films for a director or the director of a film, but when I try to do the same with an actor or a film’s cast, I get ‘null’ results. I have the same problem in both Python and the Freebase MQL Query Editor, and you can see what I've tried below.   I have an interesting issue today!! Basically I have two classes. public class A : B { public virtual new ISet<DifferentItem> Items {get;set;} } public class B { public virtual int Id {get;set;} public virtual ISet<Item> Items {get;set;} } The subclass A hides the base class B property, Items and replaces it with a new property with the same name and a different type. The mappings for these classes are public class AMapping : SubclassMap<A> { public AMapping() { HasMany(x=>x.Items) .LazyLoad() .AsSet(); } } public class BMapping : ClassMap<B> { public BMapping() { Id(x=>x.Id); HasMany(x=>x.Items) .LazyLoad() .AsSet(); } } However when I run my unit test to check the mapping I get the following exception: Tests the A mapping: NHibernate.PropertyAccessException : Invalid Cast (check your mapping for property type mismatches); setter of A ---- System.InvalidCastException : Unable to cast object of type 'NHibernate.Collection.Generic.PersistentGenericSet1[Item]' to type 'Iesi.Collections.Generic.ISet1[DifferentItem]'. Anyone have any ideas? Clearly it is something to do with the type of the collection on the sub-class. But I skimmed through the available options on the mapping class and nothing stood out as being the solution here.

  The function below keeps returning this error message. I thought that maybe the double_precision field type was what was causing this, and I tried to use CAST, but either that's not it, or I didn't do it right... Help? • Java SortedMap to Scala TreeMap

  I'm having trouble converting a java SortedMap into a scala TreeMap. The SortedMap comes from deserialization and needs to be converted into a scala structure before being used. Some background, for the curious, is that the serialized structure is written through XStream and on desializing I register a converter that says anything that can be assigned to SortedMap[Comparable[_],_] should be given to me. So my convert method gets called and is given an Object that I can safely cast because I know it's of type SortedMap[Comparable[_],_]. That's where it gets interesting. • Converting UnicodeString to PAnsiChar in Delphi XE

  In Delphi XE I am using the BASS audio library, which contains this function: function BASS_StreamCreateURL(url: PAnsiChar; offset: DWORD; flags: DWORD; proc: DOWNLOADPROC; user: Pointer):HSTREAM; stdcall; external bassdll; The 'url' parameter is of type PAnsiChar, so in my code I do a cast: FStreamHandle := BASS_StreamCreateURL(PAnsiChar( url ) [...] The compiler emits a warning on this line: "suspicious typecast of string to PAnsiChar". In trying to eliminate the warning, I found that the recommended way is to use a double cast: FStreamHandle := BASS_StreamCreateURL(PAnsiChar( AnsiString( url )) [...] This does eliminate the warning, but the BASS function now returns error code 2 ("cannot open file"), which tells me the URL string it receives is somehow broken. I cannot see what the bass DLL actually receives, but using a breakpoint in the debugger the string looks good: var s : PAnsiChar; begin s := PAnsiChar( AnsiString( url )); At this point string s appears fine, but the BASS function fails when I pass it. My initial code: PAnsiChar( url ) works well with BASS, but emits a warning. So what's the correct way of getting from UnicodeString to PAnsiChar without a warning?

  I am having problems with the Jquery qtip plugin. It works fine in Firefox (see here http://movieo.no-ip.org/ hover over the first image). But doesn't work in IE.   I am using BuildManager Class to Load a dynamically generated ASPX File, please note that it does not have a corresponding .cs file. Using Following code I am able to load the aspx file, I am even able to loop through the control collection of the dynamically created aspx file, but when I am assigning values to controls they are not showing it up. for example if I am binding the value "Dummy" to TextBox control of the aspx page, the textbox remains empty. • BindingList<T> and reflection!

  Background Working in .NET 2.0 Here, reflecting lists in general. I was originally using t.IsAssignableFrom(typeof(IEnumerable)) to detect if a Property I was traversing supported the IEnumerable Interface. (And thus I could cast the object to it safely) However this code was not evaluating to True when the object is a BindingList<T>. Next I tried to use t.IsSubclassOf(typeof(IEnumerable)) and didn't have any luck either. (Already Working) Once inside this function, given the object the property resides on, and the PropertyInfo related, get the value of the property, cast it to an IEnumerable (assuming it's possible) and then iterate through each child and call ReflectObject(...) on the child with the count variable.

• Handle cases where Nhibernate subclass does not exist

  I have a scenario where I am using nhibernate to map records from one table to several different derived classes based on a discriminator. public class BaseClass { } public class DerivedClass0 : BaseClass { } public class DerivedClass1 : BaseClass { } public class DerivedClass2 : BaseClass { } I then use nhibernate's DiscriminateSubClassesOnColumn() method and alter the configuration to include <subclass name="DerivedClass0" extends="BaseClass" discriminator-value="discriminator0" /> <subclass name="DerivedClass1" extends="BaseClass" discriminator-value="discriminator1" /> <subclass name="DerivedClass2" extends="BaseClass" discriminator-value="discriminator2" /> so that when mapped, these classes are cast to their derived classes and not BaseClass. However, there are some records in my database which have a discriminator which does not have a corresponding subclass. In these cases, nHibernate throws an error: "Object with id: 'xxx' was not of the specified subclass..." Is there some way I can handle this, so that any records which do not have a corresponding subclass are cast to BaseClass rather than an error being thrown? I have simplified the above as much as possible, however it is worth noting that the XML is edited dynamically which is why I am referencing fluent nhibernate [DiscriminateSubClassesOnColumn()] and XML at the same time. The following things (which would help) are not an option: I cannot correct the data to remove records which are invalid I cannot create subclasses for those records which do not have one I need to handle cases where nHibernate tries to map on a discriminator and finds that one does not exist.

This value must be changed to render the record useless and each record must be changed to a unique value because of a database constraint. The ISNULL is needed because there may be no records matching the SELECT RIGHT(MAX(Username),1) FROM Users WHERE Username LIKE 'Deleted%' statement and this will return NULL. I get a syntax error when trying to parse this (Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 2 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'SELECT'. Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2 Incorrect syntax near ')'. I'm sure there must be a better way to go about this, any ideas?

  I get this error when I try to import ssrc.spread: ImportError: dlopen(/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/ssrc/_spread.so, 2): Symbol not found: __ZN17ssrcspread_v1_0_67Mailbox11ZeroTimeoutE The file in question (_spread.so) includes the symbol: $ nm _spread.so | grep _ZN17ssrcspread_v1_0_67Mailbox11ZeroTimeoutE U __ZN17ssrcspread_v1_0_67Mailbox11ZeroTimeoutE U __ZN17ssrcspread_v1_0_67Mailbox11ZeroTimeoutE (twice because the file is a fat ppc/x86 binary) EDIT: okay, as James points out, the U means that the symbol is undefined but required by the object file.
