• Sophos Enterprise Console 4.5, Mac Client 7 Not Auto-Populating SEC Info

  I have Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, which includes Sophos Enterprise Console (SEC). I'm currently running version 4.5 of SEC, which is an older version. I subscribe to Mac updates, and SEC generates a binary Mac installer for me to use on Mac endpoints (Version 7 for Mac, also an older version). However, when I run the installer on Mac endpoints, it installs fine but then never auto-fills out the location of the update server, which is on a network share, and the account credentials used to access it, which I do not know and were generated by Sophos automatically. Previously, I had been able to use the SEC-generated installer to install and run Sophos on a Mac seamlessly; the update location information and account credentials were automatically filled during login, I ran the installer and it was perfectly set up. Now, however, Sophos installs on a Mac but never updates because it doesn't have the update location OR credentials. Has anyone else run across this problem or know why it is happening? • Accessing localhost on my iPhone

  I've found similarly titled questions, but none that directly address my issue. I'm running Google App Engine server on my Macbook, and it was configured to use port 8080 on localhost. And so anytime I wanted to run my site, I'd just go to localhost:8080/saveuser and everything worked fine. Now, I want to access this same site on my iPhone. I can't just do localhost on my iPhone, so I set up Web Sharing on my mac, and it's set up to http://192.168.1.106/~mohabitar. I can access this from my iPhone, but it only displays a directory of my files, and doesn't actually run the Python script. The only way my Python scripts actually run is if I do localhost:8080 on my computer. What can I do about this?

• Log application changes made to the system

  Hello, Windows 7, 64bit. I have an application which I don't trust but still need to run. I would like to run the installer of this application and later on the installed executable under some kind of "strace" for windows which will record what this application did to the system. Mainly: What files have been created / edited? What registery changed have been made? To what network hosts did the application tried to communicate? Ideally I would also be able to generate a "UNDO" action to undo all the changes. Please don't suggest full Virtualization solutions such as Virtualbox, VMWare and co. because the application should run in the host system (A "sandbox" approach will OTHO be accepted, IMHO). Do you any such utility I can use? Thank you, Maxim.

• AWS EC2 can't execute user-data script

  I'm pretty new to AWS and EC2 but I want to run instances with a user script after it's booted from another instance. I have installed ec2 tools and ran the command as it's explained in various examples like here http://www.turnkeylinux.org/blog/ec2-userdata and Eric Hammond's tutorials. however when I actually use the command: "ec2-run-instances --key my-key --user-data-file myscript my-ami" it only runs the new instance but doesn't execute the script myscript contains: #!/bin/bash echo "hello" ~/output.txt I'm running ubuntu server 12.04 AMIs. the target AMIs are duplicates of the initiating instance. if I run curl http:// 169.254.169.254/latest/user-data the imported script is there.

• Fedora vs Ubuntu to host Subversion and Bugzilla over Apache

  I'm not interested in a flame war of Ubuntu vs Fedora vs whatever. What I am interested in is whether or not I should move my current Ubuntu server to Fedora. I have been able to get Subversion setup and hosted via Apache over https and it works quite well (I'm a .NET guy so this was all new to me). I'm having trouble though with installing Bugszilla - have run into some issues getting all the perl scripts to run successfully so my questions are: 1) Will Bugszilla will install easier on Fedora? Can I just install a package instead of having to download the tar.gz file and untar it, run perl scripts, etc. 2) Is Fedora considered to be a better production server system? I have no desire for a GUI, just need it to host Subversion, Bugzilla over Apache2, and act as a file and print server for my home network.

  I have a reporting setup with SSRS on our sql server 2005 database. Because sql server 2008 is not supported by the main program which populates our database we are stuck with 2005 on our prod database. Unfortunately when I run our weekly check reports the web interface constantly times out because the server cant do the conversion to PDF. I've read that sql server 2008's SSRS is ALOT better with memory management. I was wondering if I can do some kind transact log shipping subscription publication from 2005 to 2008? Am I chasing a dream here. Currently I have to open up the ssrs project in visual studio and run the reports inside because it doesn't ever time out when doing the pdf conversion, only times out if I try to run it through the ssis web interface.

• Automatically Snapshoting AWS instances (or other back up strategy)

  I just realized that my aws instance count has risen into the double digits. I'm currently backing portions of my folders and dbs and moving them off to a backup instance. What I think I should be doing is taking a snapshot of the instances (automatically) and persisting them on S3 so I have a running 7 day collection of daily backups. There is a question asking the same thing here, however the answers don't go into depth. So the closest answer seems to be: use a cron job to snapshot the instance. So do I run the cron job on the instance itself? or do I have a micro instance to run these snapshots? Could I get an example script or the command for say a linux flavor? what software must I have installed to get this to run? Thanks.

• Running IE on OSX with WineBottler: Can't find wine?

  So I want to run IE7 on OSX 10.6 with WineBottler. I saw it was possible to run IE on Mac with WineBottler, following these instructions. I installed WineBottler and IE7. All was looking good. However, when I tried to open IE7 from the Applications menu, I got an error message: "Can't find Wine. Wine is required to run this program." I then installed wine-devel from macports (which was a bit fiddly as I hit this problem and had to update a lot of dependencies, but it did eventually build). However, even after doing that, I'm still seeing the 'Can't find wine' error message whenever I try to open IE7 or WineBottler. Could anyone advise? Do I need to start wine running somehow?

• Performance Alert Writing to event Log but not running program

  I followed the instructions here How to create and configure performance alerts in Windows Server 2003 to set up an alert if the available logical disk space on one of my drives goes below a certain number. I selected the option to write to the application event log and select the "run this program" option and put in the path to a script that sends me an email. If I copy the path to the script and run it everything works and I get the email. When I start the alert I can see that the limit I set is being exceeded and the logs are being written to the application log, but the email is never being sent. I have the runas user and pword set to a Domain Admin. If I make the "run this program path" to C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe" it also doesn't start up the calculator. The Performance Logs and alerts services is running as Local Admin with allow to interact with desktop. What am I doing wrong?

  [issue] I'm trying to modify a my.cnf value on my production server but the changes aren't taking effect after a sudo service mysql restart, using an exact copy of the my.cnf (downloaded and replaced original) on my development server the changes made are visible from show variables in mysql commandline. my.cnf is located at /etc/mysql/my.cnf sudo find / -name my.cnf /etc/mysql/my.cnf So only one file exists on the entire system.. Production is ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit Development is ubuntu 11.10 32bit Mysql versions are 5.1.61 & 5.1.62 respectively. • Intel VT-x disappeared after upgrading to Windows 8

  I've upgraded to Windows 8 some weeks ago (MSDNAA!) and today, while I was trying to run a VM, I've noticed that VT-x is disabled. Now, Hyper-V works without problems, as I've tried emulating Win7 and WP8; but VirtualBox says that VT-x is disabled and it can't run my VM. Just to double check, I've run Securable by GRC and the Intel utility and both says that I've got VT-x off. Here comes the problem: VT-x is ON in my BIOS, and it worked flawlessly before upgrading to Windows 8! Any kind of suggestion? EDIT: My CPU supports VT-x: http://ark.intel.com/products/52219

• What ssh command would I use to set up "backwards listening"

  Machine A is behind a firewall. I have physical access to it, but I want to log into it remotely, and I do not have access to the firewall settings. Machine B is remote, and not behind any firewall. (It's my linode) Machine C is the mobile device I'm going to attempt to ssh into A from. Is there an ssh command that I can run from machine A that connects to machine B and stays open, that will allow me to log into A from C, via B? From the manual I'd guess it would be to run the follwing on A ssh -R *:9999:localhost:22 me@B and then run this on C ssh me@B -p 9999 but the previous command reports "Connection refused."

• Understanding this error: apr_socket_recv: Connection reset by peer (104)

  So, if I do some benchmarking with apache benchmark (ab), and I use large numbers of requests. Then sometimes in the middle of a test I get this error. I don't even know what it means. So how can I fix it? Or is it just something that will happen if the server gets too many hits anyway? The problem is, if I run 10,000 hits, it'll all run perfectly. If I run it again, it'll get to 4000 and get the error: apr_socket_recv: Connection reset by peer (104) A little about my setup: I have nginx taking static requests and processing dynamic ones to apache. The file in question is served from cache by nginx, so I guess it's probably got to do with how nginx is handling the requests? Ideas?

• mysql settings - using the available resources

  I've got a lot of processing work I need to run on a mysql server. I've installed mysql 5.1.45-community on a Win 2007 64bit. Its running on a xenon, 3ghz 6 processors with 8 gig ram. It doesn't seem to matter what queries I run (or the number I run at the same time), when I look in task manager, I'll see one processor is out at 100%. The other 5 are idol. Memory is static at 1.54 gig. When I installed mysql, I used the wizard and selected the default "server" (not workstation) option. I feel like I should be getting more bang for my buck. Is there something else I should be monitoring or something I should change to use the other system resources???

  I run a gaming community on a colo with a 100Mbps port. I want to buy a very cheap 35 dollar server with the same 100Mbps port, and run pfSense to use as a hardware firewall. I'm dealing with a bunch of 14 year old kids that have access to botnets, so it can become a bit necessary to get something like this. My overall question, is using pfSense on a cheap identical datacenter/port speed server worth it to actually block DDoS attacks? A bit more into detail since I assume you will ask this, the attacks we receive are normally around 1Gbps. We currently run CentOS using CSF Firewall, and even when using a software firewall, we block 500Mbps UDP floods, or just generic attacks pretty easily. Thanks, - Necro

• Setting properties in chef-client.rb

  I have a use-case where a chef recipe needs to use 'remote_file' to fetch a file on a virtual, and the fetch needs to be do through an HTTP proxy. This is not working because chef-client doesn't use the system proxy settings ... it gets its proxy settings from the /etc/chef/chef-client.rb So how do I get proxy settings (or settings in general) into the chef-client.rb file on a client? Ideally, I'd like it to happen at client bootstrap time, but I can't see how to do that short of hacking the code. The other possibility is that I could create a recipe that updates the chef-client.rb file. But that strikes me as a bit dangerous. And it means that you need to run chef-client twice before it works, assuming that the missing proxy setting in the first run causes the run to ultimately fail. Any ideas on how to fix this?

  I wonder how stuff like this works in windows (xp and other that have telnet): Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> http Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> pop3 Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> smtp Are these "named" ports? Only windows knows that it has to substitute port numbers coz these are standard ports? Is there way I could create such a named port on windows? Is it a good practice to run scripts (BASH, Perl etc.) from another directory? Will they usually find all the stuff they need to run properly? If so, what is the best way to run a "distant" script?   So, I am trying to install Arch Linux on my Acer Aspire 4830tg, but I keep running into problems. Some background knowledge, I am trying to install Arch off a usb stick and I got the iso image using bittorrent. I am also trying to install it alongside of Windows 8 (which is already installed). So when I boot into Arch linux I get this error: :: Mounting '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201212' to 'run/archiso/bootmnt' Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201212 ... ERROR: '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201212' device did not show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt You can try to fix the problem manually, log out when you are finished sh: can't access tty; job control turned off I know that it will work if I run it on a virtual machine but whenever I try to install it on my laptop I keep getting this error. And since you can't register for the Arch forums without a Arch terminal to run their captcha command I can't ask this on their forums.

None of my songs (.mp3/.avi etc) are not able to run in any of the media players: Windows media player, Windows media center, VLC, DIV etc. What i have done before posting the question here. a. Check Device and Drivers and they are working OK and Updated even. b. Run Sample Audio (Downloaded from Internet) in Adobe Sound-booth and it worked. c. Plus i run a video in YouTube and i was able to hear it! d. I am able to hear windows Error Beeps too..!!! e. While running Movies i could see playing but not hear it What could be the problem? please help
