This series gave me the opportunity to go back and see what I have contributed to this blog throughout the last 7 years. This was indeed fantastic series as this provided me the opportunity to witness how technology has grown throughout the year and how I have progressed in my career while writing this blog post. This series was indeed fantastic experience readers as many joined during the last few years and were not sure what they have missed in recent years. Let us continue with the final episode of the Memory Lane Series. Here is the list of selected articles of SQLAuthority.com across all these years. Instead of just listing all the articles I have selected a few of my most favorite articles and have listed them here with additional notes below it. Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Get Current User – Get Logged In User Here is the straight script which list logged in SQL Server users. Disable All Triggers on a Database – Disable All Triggers on All Servers Question : How to disable all the triggers for a database? Additionally, how to disable all the triggers for all servers? For answer execute the script in the blog post. Importance of Master Database for SQL Server Startup I have received following questions many times. I will list all the questions here and answer them together. What is the purpose of Master database? Should our backup Master database? Which database is must have database for SQL Server for startup? Which are the default system database created when SQL Server 2005 is installed for the first time? What happens if Master database is corrupted? Answers to all of the questions are very much related. 2008 DECLARE Multiple Variables in One Statement SQL Server is a great product and it has many features which are very unique to SQL Server. Regarding feature of SQL Server where multiple variable can be declared in one statement, it is absolutely possible to do. 2009 How to Enable Index – How to Disable Index – Incorrect syntax near ‘ENABLE’ Many times I have seen that the index is disabled when there is a large update operation on the table. Bulk insert of very large file updates in any table using SSIS is usually preceded by disabling the index and followed by enabling the index. I have seen many developers running the following query to disable the index. 2010 List of all the Views from Database Many emails I received suggesting that they have hundreds of the view and now have no clue what is going on and how many of them have indexes and how many does not have an index. Some even asked me if there is any way they can get a list of the views with the property of Index along with it. Here is the quick script which does exactly the same. You can also include many other columns from the same view. Minimum Maximum Memory – Server Memory Options I was recently reading about SQL Server Memory Options over here. While reading this one line really caught my attention is minimum value allowed for maximum memory options. The default setting for min server memory is 0, and the default setting for max server memory is 2147483647. The minimum amount of memory you can specify for max server memory is 16 megabytes (MB). 2011 Fundamentals of Columnstore Index There are two kinds of storage in a database. Row Store and Column Store. Row store does exactly as the name suggests – stores rows of data on a page – and column store stores all the data in a column on the same page. These columns are much easier to search – instead of a query searching all the data in an entire row whether the data are relevant or not, column store queries need only to search a much lesser number of the columns. How to Ignore Columnstore Index Usage in Query In summary the question in simple words “How can we ignore using the column store index in selective queries?” Very interesting question – you can use I can understand there may be the cases when the column store index is not ideal and needs to be ignored the same. You can use the query hint IGNORE_NONCLUSTERED_COLUMNSTORE_INDEX to ignore the column store index. The SQL Server Engine will use any other index which is best after ignoring the column store index. 2012 Storing Variable Values in Temporary Array or Temporary List SQL Server does not support arrays or a dynamic length storage mechanism like list. Absolutely there are some clever workarounds and few extra-ordinary solutions but everybody can;t come up with such solution. Additionally, sometime the requirements are very simple that doing extraordinary coding is not required. Here is the simple case. Move Database Files MDF and LDF to Another Location It is not common to keep the Database on the same location where OS is installed. Usually Database files are in SAN, Separate Disk Array or on SSDs. This is done usually for performance reason and manageability perspective. Now the challenges comes up when database which was installed at not preferred default location and needs to move to a different location. Here is the quick tutorial how you can do it. UNION ALL and ORDER BY – How to Order Table Separately While Using UNION ALL If your requirement is such that you want your top and bottom query of the UNION resultset independently sorted but in the same result set you can add an additional static column and order by that column. Let us re-create the same scenario. • I upgraded from win 7 to ubuntu 12.04 and know my html codes dont work

  Hello i just started using Ubuntu the other day i never used Linux or anything else besides windows before. I started learning HTML on windows 7 before switching to Ubuntu and know my HTML images are not working even after i made new images on Ubuntu and put the correct path and made sure the images are .png. After all that the site does not load the new images and the coeds are just fine i put my HTML files on cloud storage before switching to Ubuntu so its not the codes. Also i am using Mozilla Fire Fox.

• Gnome Mplayer failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so

  When I open an avi file under Gnome Mplayer, there is an error report: Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I then followed this blog to solve this problem, which suggests two ways. The first way is to call mplayer in terminal: mplayer -vo xv video.wmv This works for me. But I would like to try the second way, which is to write options in one of the configure files of Gnome Mplayer. I choose to write into ~/.mplayer/config, where I wrote: -vo xv But it does not work. So I was wondering if I make any mistake? What to write into the configure file? Thanks and regards!

• Bitbucket and a small development house

  I am in the process of finally rolling Mercurial as our version control system at work. This is a huge deal for everyone as, shockingly, they have never used a VCS. After months of putting the bug in management's ears, they finally saw the light and now realise how much better it is than working with a network of shared folders! In the process of rolling this out, I am thinking of different strategies to manage our stuff and I am leaning towards using Bitbucket as our "central" repository. The projects in Bitbucket will solely be private projects and everyone will push and pull from there. I am open to different suggestions, but has anyone got a similar setup? If so, what caveats have you encountered?

• How to properly set up a network bridge using bridge-utils using wlan0 as the internet "source"?

  Hey everyone this is my first post so go easy on me. I currently have a laptop with Ubuntu Studio 12.04 Beta 2 that is supplying a wireless internet connection to a windows 7 desktop computer that's connected directly to the laptop through Ethernet. I'm using the "shared to other computers" method in network manager but I believe it doesn't work with what I want to do. I would like to have the windows computer on the same subnet as every other computer in my house (192.168.1.x) so I can use LAN applications (MIDI over WiFi, Bonjour etc.) on the windows computer without having to run a massive cable to the router. I've been googling endlessly and tried multiple configurations in the /etc/network/interfaces file without success. All of them would report "cannot add wlan0 to bridge" Is there a specific way to make this work? What am I missing? Thank you

• ~/.bashrc return can only 'return' from a function or sourced script

  I am trying to setup a OpenStack box to have a look at OpenStack Object Storage (Swift). Looking through the web I found this link; http://swift.openstack.org/development_saio.html#loopback-section I followed the instructions line by line but stuck on step 7 in the "Getting the code and setting up test environment" section. When I execute ~/.bashrc I get; line 6: return: can only 'return' from a function or sourced script. Below is the Line 6 extract from ~/.bashrc. My first reaction is to comment this line out, but I dont know what it does. Can anyone help? #If not running interactively, dont't do anything [ -z "$PS1" ] && return I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 as a VM on Hyper-v if knowing that is useful.

• Can search engine robots read file with permission 640?

  I am on a shared web hosting linux server. I want search engine robots/spiders to be able to read the robots.txt but not any one typing www.mysite.com/robots.txt. As per the following google group post, the user specifies that by setting file permission to 640, it's possible to deny access to robots.txt file by the world but still enable search engine robots to read them. Is that true? If not how it's possible to deny general public access to robots.txt but still allow Search engine robots to read them.

• Manage Your Amazon S3 Account with CloudBerry Explorer

  If you have an Amazon S3 account you’re using to backup your data, you might want an easy way to manage it. CloudBerry Explorer is a free app that runs on your desktop an provides an easy way to manage your S3 account. Installation and Setup Just download and install the application with the defaults. When the application launches you’ll be prompted to enter in your username and email to get a registration key. Or you can continue on by clicking Register later. Now you will want to set up your Amazon S3 account. Click on File \ Amazon S3 Accounts. Double-click on the New Account icon.   Next enter in your Amazon account Access and Secret keys, select SSL if you want, then click the Test Connection button. Provided everything was entered correctly, you’ll see the Connection Success screen, just close out of it. Browse and Manage files Once you have your account setup through the Explorer, you can start viewing and managing your files on S3. The left pane shows your S3 buckets and stored files, while the right side shows your local computer. This allows you to manage your files in your Amazon S3 buckets directly from your desktop! It’s very easy to use, and you can drag and drop files from your computer to the S3 account or vice versa. There is also the ability to transfer files between Amazon S3 accounts from within the explorer. Go into Tools and Content Types and you can control the file types by adding, removing, or editing them. If you end up messing something up along the lines, you can always select Reset to defaults and everything will be back to normal. There is a multiple tabbed view so you can easily keep track of your different accounts and local machine. It allows the ability to create new storage buckets directly in the Explorer. Or you can delete buckets as well… Different actions can be accessed from the toolbars or by right-clicking and selecting from the context menu. Here we see a cool option that lets you move your data inside Amazon S3. It is faster and doesn’t cost money by moving the files to your computer first, then to another account. However, if you want data moved to your local machine first, you have that option as well.   Not all features are available in the free version, and if it’s not, you’ll be prompted to purchase a license for the Pro version. We will have a comprehensive review of the Pro version in the near future.    If you ever need help with CloudBerry Explorer, go to Tools \ Diagnostics. It will run a quick diagnostics check and you can send the information to the CloudBerry team for assistance. Delete Files from Amazon S3 To delete a file from you Amazon S3 account, simply highlight the files or folder you want to get rid of then click Delete on the toolbar. You can also right-click the file and select Delete from the Context Menu. Click Yes to the confirmation dialog box… Then you can watch the progress as your files are deleted in the bottom section of the explorer. Conclusion CloudBerry Explorer free version has several neat features that will allow you easy and basic control over you Amazon S3 account. The free version may be enough for basic users, but power users will want to upgrade to the pro version, as it includes a lot more features. Using the free version allows you to get a feel for what CloudBerry Explorer has to offer, and is a good starting point. Keep in mind that Amazon S3 is introducing Reduced Redundancy Storage which will lower the price of data stored. The price drops from $0.15 per GB to only $0.10 per GB. • RAM Cache always full

  I have 6GB RAM, i5 2.4GHZ Processor running Ubuntu 11.10. When streaming online or opening several tabs in Chromium I soon have 4GB Memory in the cache. And this makes my Notebook slow. When streaming a video, after a few minutes it really slows down and stumbles/jerks. I partitioned my HD so that I have 8GB swap. What could the problem be? How can I solve this? P.s: initially I had 4gb and recently upgraded to 6GB, but I did not experience a significant change. P.P.S: if I enter "free -g" in the terminal this is the result: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 5 2 3 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1 4 Swap: 8 0 8

• How to hide (in Thunar and Nautilus) a directory without putting a dot in its name?

  Usually Linux programs store user's settings in ~/.* directories. But unfortunately some developers (of some applications I need) do not follow this rule and don't start their settings storage folders names with a dot. This results in never-user-used folders cluttering (not the right word perhaps, as there are not many, but they annoy anyway) a home directory. Renaming them is not an option, as the applications won't find them in this case (and will create them again). Is there a way to hide a folder having no dot starting its name from being displayed in common file system browsers (I actually use Thunar of XFCE, alongside with Midnight Commander and Krusader, but wouldn't mind to know about Nautilus too).

• Prewritten App for Used Car Dealer?

  Is there somewhere I can find a prewritten WebApp (with database) for a used car dealer? The application would need to support the following: Easy setup in a low cost Shared or Cloud Host Give potential customers easy way to browse current inventory (cars on lot) with suggested prices Give dealership easy way to login and update inventory (cars on lot) and suggested prices Give potential customers easy way to send the dealership an inquiry about a specific vehicle on the lot with CAPTCHA style SPAM protection I prefer ASP.NET MVC and Microsoft SQL Server, but I might consider other technologies such as WebForms and LightSwitch (HTML5). I am reasonably comfortable with MVC and WebForms, but I really don't want to waste a bunch of time writing an application that might already exist. I did find a few interesting templates via Bing that seem to control CSS and Layout, but I'm not sure if they contain any business logic or if they would integrate well into an MVC App.

• Noting happens when I connect my Iphone 3G to my laptop

  Hi, how do i connect my iphone to my laptop (ubuntu 10.04) so that i can sync music and be able to look at it as a usb stick? (this is what I want to do but there is a problem.) When i connect it to my laptop nothing happens, it doesn't show up as an ikon or as a mass storage device. My Iphone runs 4.2.1 it's an Iphone 3G and it's not jailbroken for the moment, is that a problem?   A yearly tradition for the past 5 years (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) is back again this year ... GlassFish Community Event is a gathering of GlassFish community members attending JavaOne. GlassFish Party is for everybody who are, or would like to be friends of GlassFish, in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. This year, again, both the events will be happening on the Sunday of JavaOne. The exact coordinates are a TBD but save the date while you are booking flights/hotels. GlassFish Community Event When: Sep 30, 11am - 1pm Where: TBD GlassFish Party When: Sep 30, 8pm - 10pm Where: The Thirsty Bear Note, a separate JavaOne registration is required to attend the community event.
