• "Subforms" associated with tree view in VB

  I am using VB Express 2008 to demonstrate my ideas for an improved UI for an existing product for my colleagues at work. The current UI has a certain page with ten tabs, allowing the user to define up to ten "things". The available choices for each of the ten "things" are all the same. On each of the ten tabs, there is a checkbox to enable that definition. Generally, a user will never use more than 5 or 6 unique definitions, the rest will remain disabled. So far, my prototype has a tree view control with one branch to contain this list of definitions, Add and Delete buttons. My idea is: there is one sub-branch to start with (corresponding to the first tab in the current UI); if the user wants addtional definitions, they click Add and other branches are added to the tree view, up to maximum of ten. I think I should be able to create a "class" that has a sub-UI (like a sub-form in Access) along with behavior code, that can be instantiated with each press of the Add button; each instantiation's settings can be set independently and is displayed in the main UI form )in a panel or frame) when selected in the tree view. For example, suppose the user Adds to make a total of three definitions: the tree view now has three sub-branches, each of which presents the same sub-UI with settings that can be set specific to the selected sub-branch. I'm sure it's possible but not sure how to do it. I know a comprehensive "answer" might be complicated and long, but I may just need some quick hints to get underway - don't be shy! • animation on image view on grid view

• Loading/Displaying large amount of data on webpage.

  I have a webpage which contains a table for displaying a large amount of data (on average from 2,000 to 10,000 rows). This page takes a long time to load/render. Which is understandable. The problem is, while the page is loading the PCs memory usage skyrockets (500mb on my test system is in use by iexplorer) and the whole PC grinds to a halt until it has finished, which can take a minute or two. IE hangs until it is complete, switching to another running program is the same. I need to fix this - and ideally i want to accomplish 2 things: 1) Load individual parts of the page seperately. So the page can render initially without the large data table. A loading div will be placed there until it is ready. 2) Dont use up so much memory or local resources while rendering - so at least they can use a different tab/application at the same time. How would I go about doing both or either of these? I'm an applications programmer by trade so i am still a little fizzy on the things I can do in a web environment. Cheers all.

• Displaying Flex Object References

  I have a bit of a memory leak issue in my Flex application, and the short version of my question is: is there any way (in AcitonScript 3) to find all live references to a given object? What I have is a number of views with presentation models behind each of them (using Swiz). The views of interest are children of a TabNavigator, so when I close the tab, the view is removed from the stage. When the view is removed from the stage, Swiz sets the model reference in the view to null, as it should. I also removeAllChildren() from the view. However when profiling the application, when I do this and run a GC, neither the view nor the presentation model are freed (though both set their references to each other to null). One model object used by the view (not a presenter, though) IS freed, so it's not completely broken. I've only just started profiling today (firmly believing in not optimising too early), so I imagine there's some kind of reference floating around somewhere, but I can't see where, and what would be super helpful would be the ability to debug and see a list of objects that reference the target object. Is this at all possible, and if not natively, is there some light-weight way to code this into future apps for debugging purposes? Cheers.

• How to reduce the need for IISRESET for developing ASP.NET web app in IIS 5.1

  I have a web application project on my dev PC running WinXP and hence IIS 5.1. The changes I'm making to this site seem to "take effect" only after I do IISRESET. That is, I make a source change, Rebuild the project and then Start without Debugging (or with debugging). The newly changed code is not "visible" or in effect unless I intervene with an IISRESET. BTW, the "web" tab on the Properties display for the web app project is configured to use the Local IIS web server at project Url: http://localhost/myVirtualDirectory ... but I've noticed the same issue when using the VStudio Dev Server (i.e. I have to stop it by visiting the taskbar tray area in order to see my source changes take effect). Is this something I can change? EDIT UPDATE: Just wanting to clear this up if possible. Two answers diverge below; not sure how to move forward. One states this is to be expected (weakness of IIS 5.1 which in turn is the best WinXP can provide). Another states this is not expected behavior (and I tend to agree since this is the first I've encounted this on the same old WinXP dev platform I've had a long time). I suspect it may be something "deep inside" the Visual Studio 2008 web app which was upgraded to this new IDE from VStudio 2002 (ASP.NET 1.1). I've tried to add comment/questions down each answer path. Thanks.

• How to close all tabs in Safari using AppleScript?

  I have made a very simple AppleScript to close all tabs in Safari. The problem is, it works, but not completely. I tried that on my system (MacBook Pro jan 2008), as well as on a Mac Pro G5 under Tiger and the script fails on both, albeit with a much less descriptive error on Tiger. The problem is that only a couple of tabs are closed. Running the script a few times closes a few tab each time until none is left, but always fails with the same error after closing a few tabs. Under Leopard I get an out of bounds error. Since I am using fast enumeration (not using "repeat from 0 to number of items in windows") I don't see how I can get an out of bounds error with this... My goal is to use the Cocoa Scripting Bridge to close tabs in Safari from my Objective-C Cocoa application but the Scripting Bridge fails in the same manner. The non-deletable tabs show as NULL in the Xcode debugger, while the other tabs are valid objects from which I can get values back (such as their title). In fact I tried with the Scripting Bridge first then told myself why not try this directly in AppleScript and I was surprised to see the same results. I must have a glaring omission or something in there... (seems like a bug in Safari AppleScript support to me... :S) I've used repeat loops and Obj-C 2.0 fast enumeration to iterate through collections before with zero problems, so I really don't see what's wrong here. • Crosstab with multiple items

  In SPSS, it is (relatively) easy to create a cross tab with multiple variables using the factors as the table heading. So, something like the following (made up data, etc.). Q1, Q2, and Q3 each have either a 1, a 2, or a 3 for each person. 1 (very Often) 2 (Rarely) 3 (Never) Q1. Likes it 12 15 13 Q2. Recommends it 22 11 10 Q3. Used it 22 12 9 In SPSS, one can even request row, column, or total percentages. I've tried table(), ftable(), xtab(), CrossTable() from gmodels, and CrossTable() from descr, and none of these can handle (afaik) multiple variables; they mostly seem to handle 1 variable crossed with another variable, and the 3rd creates layers. Is there a package with some good cross tabbing/table examples that I could use to figure this out? I'm sure I'm missing something simple, so I appreciate you pointing out what I missed. Perhaps I have to generate each row as a separate list and then make a dataframe and print the dataframe?

• How to specify MQ channel table location for .net web application using web.config

  I've been going around in circles for a while on this one now. I'm trying to connect to a distributed queue manager using a supplied channel table file. I can get this to work if I specify the environmental variable MQCHLLIB and MQCHLTAB on my server. However the IBM documentation states that the .net config file can override these variables. Here is what I have placed in my web.config file: ... <configSections> <section name="CHANNELS" type="System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler" /> </configSections> <CHANNELS> <add key="ChannelDefinitionDirectory" value="C:\temp"></add> <add key="ChannelDefinitionFile" value="DSM_MOM_TEST.tab"></add> </CHANNELS> ... Is there something that I've missed in the code? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

• Aligning decimal points in HTML

  I have a table containing decimal numbers in one column. I'm looking to align them in a manner similar to a word processor's "decimal tab" feature, so that all the points sit on a vertical line. I have two possible solutions at the moment but I'm hoping for something better... Solution 1: Split the numbers within the HTML, e.g. <td><div>1234</div><div class='dp'>.5</div></td> with .dp { width: 3em; } (Yes, this solution doesn't quite work as-is. The concept is, however, valid.) Solution 2: I found mention of <COL ALIGN="CHAR" CHAR="."> This is part of HTML4 according to the reference page, but it doesn't work in FF3.5, Safari 4 or IE7, which are the browsers I have to hand. It also has the problem that you can't pull out the numeric formatting to CSS (although, since it's affecting a whole column, I suppose that's not too surprising). Thus, anyone have a better idea?

• Visual Studio 2010 / ASP.NET MVC 2 / Publish

  I just did a clean install on Windows 7 x64 Professional with the final release of Visual Studio 2010 Premium. In order to duplicate what I'm experiencing do the following in: Create a new ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application Right click the project and select Properties On the Web tab, select "Use Local IIS Web Server" Click on Create Virtual Directory Save all Unload the project Edit the project file Change MvcBuildViews to true Save all Reload project Right click the project and select Publish Choose the file system publish method Enter a target location Choose Delete all existing files Select Publish Right click the project Select Publish Each time I do the above I get the following errror: "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level..." The error originates from obj\debug\package\packagetmp\web.config, relative to the project directory. I can repeat this all day long with any MVC 2 project I've built. In order to fix this problem, I need to set MvcBuildViews to false in the project file. That's not really an option. This wasn't a problem in Visual Studio 2008 and it seems to be an issue with the way the Publish command stages files beneath the project directory. Can anyone else duplicate this error? Is this a bug or by design? Is there a fix, workaround, etc...? Thanks.

I need to perform basic cut and paste, replace operations for some columns.. the data is pretty well organized.. the only problem is I cannot play with it with Excel because of the size (2000 rows, 550000 columns). here is some part of the data: ID,Affection,Sex,DRB1_1,DRB1_2,SENum,SEStatus,AntiCCP,RFUW,rs3094315,rs12562034,rs3934834,rs9442372,rs3737728 D0024949,0,F,0101,0401,SS,yes,?,?,A_A,A_A,G_G,G_G D0024302,0,F,0101,7,SN,yes,?,?,A_A,G_G,A_G,?_? D0023151,0,F,0101,11,SN,yes,?,?,A_A,G_G,G_G,G_G I need to remove 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th columns; I need to find every _ character from column 10 onwards and replace it with a space ( ) character; I need to replace every ? with zero (0); I need to replace every comma with a tab; I need to remove first row (that has column names; I need to replace every 0 with 1, every 1 with 2 and every ? with 0 in 2nd column; I need to replace F with 2, M with 1 and ? with 0 in 3rd column; so that in the resulting file the output reads: D0024949 1 2 A A A A G G G G D0024302 1 2 A A G G A G 0 0 D0023151 1 2 A A G G G G G G (both input and output should read one line per row, ne extra blank row) Is there a memory efficient way of doing that with java(and I need a code to do that) or a usable tool for playing with this large data so that I can easily apply Excel functionality..

  I'm creating a small vb.net application, and I'm trying trying to write a list of results from a listview to a text file. I've looked online and found the code to open the save file dialog and write the text file. When I click save on the save file dialog, I receive an IOException with the message "The process cannot access the file 'C:\thethe.txt' because it is being used by another process." The text file is created in the correct location, but is empty. • Can I delay the keyup event for jquery?

  I'm using the rottentomatoes movie API in conjunction with twitter's typeahead plugin using bootstrap 2.0. I've been able to integerate the API but the issue I'm having is that after every keyup event the API gets called. This is all fine and dandy but I would rather make the call after a small pause allowing the user to type in several characters first. • Export sheet from Excel to CSV

  I am creating a spread sheet to help ease the entry of data into one of our systems. They are entering inventory items into this spread sheet to calculate the unit cost of the item (item cost + tax + S&H). The software we purchased cannot do this. Aan invoice can have one or more lines (duh!) and I calculate the final unit cost. This is working fine. I then want to take that data and create a CSV from that so they can load it into our inventory system. I currently have a second tab that is laid out like I want the CSV, and I do an equal cell (=Sheet!A3) to get the values on the "export sheet". The problem is when they save this to a CSV, there are many blank lines that need to be deleted before they can upload it. I want a file that only contains the data that is needed. I am sure this could be done in VBA, but I don't know where to start or know how to search for an example to start. Any direction or other options would be appreciated.

• Clever Next and Previous Buttons in jQuery

  I have created a webpage which when you press 'down' automatically scrolls down to the next ID (a section which isn't visible due to overflow: hidden) When you press 'up' it scrolls back up. At the moment each arrow simply tells the webpage to go to a specific div e.g. the 'down arrow' says <a class="tab" href="#page2">Down</a> This is ok for just two pages however as I will be having more pages what I would like is to be able to specify the amount of pages and for the arrows to automatically change which link it needs to go to next. For example, on page 1 the 'up arrow' is not visible and when you press the 'down arrow' it scrolls to #page2 whereupon the 'up arrow' is then visible. If you now press the down arrow again it will take you to #page3 whereupon it then becomes hidden as page 3 is the last page. I'm guessing I need to create a 'var' which specifies the amount of pages and that to make the arrows invisible it will change the css property 'display' to none yet I don't know how to do this nor to make the links work out which number to go to next! edit: Just botched together some code which hides the arrows based on the page number however still need to work out how to update the variables and change the links the arrows go to. • Exception in DatePickerDialog

  Hi, i am trying to create a DatePickerDialog in the class 'dateDisplay.class'. I am calling this activity from 'main.class'. If I call the 'dateDisplay.class' using startActivity(), then the DatePickerDialog works fine. But actually I am using an ActivityGroup (for using tab in my application) and I am starting the 'dateDisplay.class' using the following code : Intent dateIntent=new Intent(context,dateDisplay.class); View v=getLocalActivityManager().startActivity("2",dateIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP)).getDecorView(); setContentView(v); But an exception is caught, on calling the onCreateDialog() function. And the process is suddently stopped. It shows TargetInvocationException is occured. How can I correct the code? • What is a good approach to preloading data?

  Are there best practices out there for loading data into a database, to be used with a new installation of an application? For example, for application foo to run, it needs some basic data before it can even be started. I've used a couple options in the past: TSQL for every row that needs to be preloaded: IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM Master.Site WHERE Name = @SiteName) INSERT INTO [Master].[Site] ([EnterpriseID], [Name], [LastModifiedTime], [LastModifiedUser]) VALUES (@EnterpriseId, @SiteName, GETDATE(), @LastModifiedUser) Another option is a spreadsheet. Each tab represents a table, and data is entered into the spreadsheet as we realize we need it. Then, a program can read this spreadsheet and populate the DB. There are complicating factors, including the relationships between tables. So, it's not as simple as loading tables by themselves. For example, if we create Security.Member rows, then we want to add those members to Security.Role, we need a way of maintaining that relationship. Another factor is that not all databases will be missing this data. Some locations will already have most of the data, and others (that may be new locations around the world), will start from scratch. Any ideas are appreciated.

  I am trying to develop an extension that will work with Awesome New Tab Page. I've followed the author's advice to the letter, but it doesn't seem like any of the script I add to my background page is being executed at all. • Send Special Keys to Gtk.VteTerminal

  Hi I have this OSS Project called Monocaffe connections manager which uses the Gtk.VteTerminal widget from PyGTK. A nice feature is that it allows the users to send commands to different servers' consoles (cluster mode) using a Gtk.TextView for the input. The way I send key strokes to each Gtk.VteTerminal is by using the feed_child method. For common keys there's no problem: I simply feed what the TextView receives to all the terminals, but when doing so with special keys I get into a little trouble. For "Return" I catch the event and feed the terminal a '\n'. For back-space is the same, catch the event and feed a '\b'. def cluster_backspace(self, widget): return self.cluster_send_key('\b') The problem comes with other keys like Tab, Arrows, Esc which I don't know how to feed as str to the terminal to recognize them. In the case of Esc is a real pain, because the users can edit the same file on different servers using vi, but cannot escape insert mode. Anyway, I'm not looking for a complete solution, just ideas since I've ran out of them. Thanks.

• Drupal view filter to show only one of a certain item

  I'm fairly new to Drupal, and am using Node Import to take a TSV file and turn it into nodes. I'm hitting a problem, though, with automating updates to the nodes. Again, I'd like to take a Tab Separated Values text file, and load it into my site via Node Import (or whatever else anyone might suggest) and then only show updated Nodes. Here's a specific example: I have a Node with the following info: StoreId Name Address Phone Contact 01 Name1 Address1 Phone1 Contact1 02 Name2 Address2 Phone2 Contact2 etc. The info pulls into the nodes just fine (Thank you Node Import!), but we also want to process updates to the nodes. So far I have two ideas... figure out how to delete duplicate (previous) instances of the same StoreID, or just save the node with the duplicate StoreID (and new other info) and just display the most current version. In Views, I can get it to show the nodes and everything, but I can't figure out how to only display the most recent version of each StoreID. A view of views would work, but I can't seem to get that to work, either. Any ideas or other approaches I could take? Thanks in advance for the help!

• Scripts fail when jQuery.js isn't cached. When cached, scripts run fine.

  I have jQuery UI Tabs which load their content via AJAX. About once every 15 times when the entire page is loaded (not just XHR), things fail and I don't see the proper content in the tab. Fiddler showed me that when things fail I also see that jQuery.js and jQuery-ui.js are both sent to the browser in full (~100kB). Normally, a page load results in HTTP status code 304 for both of those files, they're not re-downloaded, and the page displays properly. When the status code is 200 and fresh copies of jQuery/UI are sent, things fail. I notice this most often in IE8, but that's because I use it for web development. I have seen it in Firefox, but for some reason I can't reproduce it now. Fiddler shows that the HTTP request asks for: GET /Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js?_=1255309685187 HTTP/1.1 I can't figure out what the ?_=1255309685187 is for, but I'm guessing it's a token to indicate for how long the file should be cached. Since I can't reproduce the problem in Firefox right now, I don't know what Firebug says. Any insight would be appreciated. EDIT: This is with Visual Studio's development webserver.
