• thunar-archive-plugin not working

  After I experienced serious not yet resolved performance issues with Nautilus I decided to move to XUbuntu so I installed its metapackage from Ubuntu and started using it. It turns out that the archive plugin for Thunar (provides the "Extract here" option in the contextual menu when right clicking over a compressed archive) is not working, even after I apt-get purged it and reinstalled. It simply doesn't show its options in the contextual menu. What should I do to make it work?

• how do I get dual monitors to work properly in Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell Latitude D630?

  I have spent a lot of time trying to get dual monitors to work on Ubuntu 11.10 on my Dell Latitude D630 (nVidia NVS 135m video card). - For starters, the System Displays settings app always only showed one unknown monitor, even though I had the external Acer monitor connected. - So I downloaded and installed the nVidia drivers. According to what I read I would need to only use the nVidia driver app (nVidia X Server Settings), so that's what I've done. (System Displays settings continued to only show a single monitor anyway). - nVidia settings app only showed on monitor until I changed the BIOS setting to use the onboard video for external monitor (not the dock video, which it was set to, even though I don't have a docking station). - The nVidia setting app now recognized both monitors. So, I setup the X Server display config as Separate X screen for both monitors. My laptop screen shows up as AUO 1440x900 and my external monitor as Acer E211H 1920x1080. - Everything seemed like it would work, but the external monitor was just a complete white screen. The external monitor was non-functional, even though sometimes it would show the background image - still nothing would show up over there. - So, I checked the Enable Xinerama box. - Now, after logging out and back in, the wallpaper extends to both screens but I get no taskbar at the bottom or top, no system menus, and I have to press the power button to restart or log off. - After experimenting with all the shells, the only one that shows the menus and taskbars when I log in is Gnome Classic. - This is pretty much the same symptoms as found here: How do I fix 11.10 GUI?. - So, I resign myself to the older shell. - Everything works fine until ... I unplug the external monitor ... this is a laptop after all. - Anyway, after doing some work on the road, I plug back in and I still see both screens and it's functional except, ... - Now, the laptop screen (with the taskbar and menu bar) has 4 black bars at the top that windows cannot cover. The top bar is the menu bar (with Applications, Places, the date and time and the system menu on the right). But the next 3 bars (the same height as the top menu bar) are empty and are just reducing the max size of windows on that screen. - See screenshot here: http://i39.tinypic.com/35d2kh1.png - So ... 1. How do I get rid of those extra 3 black bars? They're taking valuable screen space. 2. (less critical) How do I successfully use both screens in the Ubuntu or Ubuntu 2D shell?

• WinPE, Startnet.CMD and passing variables to second batch file not working

  I don't know scripting or PowerShell (yes I need to learn something). I'm not an expert batch file maker either. I have a WinPE flash drive which I used to deploy OS images. I have the WIM, drivers and anything needed else outside the WinPE environment to ensure that Updates, changes are easier for me to make. I use the "STARTNET.CMD" batch file which is part of the WinPE. The reason to go through the letter drives is that the WinPE always gets the X letter drive assigned. The flash drive itself can receive a random letter which always changes. My deployment menu is located on the flash drive it self and not inside the WinPE. This is so that if I need to make a change I don't have to re-do the WinPE. I am able to locate the "menu.bat" batch file and launch it. I use a variable to capture the letter drive. I call the second batch file named "menu.bat" and pass the variable to it. When the second batch file loads, I believe that I am calling the variable correctly. If I break out of the batch file I can echo the variable and see the expected reply. The issue is that I can't use the variable to work with anything on the second batch file. In my test, I can get this to work over and over. When it runs from the real USB flash drive it does not work. I removed comments from the second batch file to make it smaller. My issue is that files below all get a message stating that the system cannot find the path specified. • Software: Launching League of Legends spectator mode from Command Line (Mac)

  Background: tl;dr at the end League of Legends has a spectator mode, in which you can watch someone else's game (essentially a replay) with a 3 minute delay. Popular LoL website OP.GG has figured out a clever way of hosting these spectator games on their own servers, thereby making them replayable, as opposed to only being available while the game is on (as Riot does it). If you request a replay from OP.GG, it sends a batch file which looks for where the League is situated and then the magic happens: @start "" "League of Legends.exe" "8394" "LoLLauncher.exe" "" "spectator fspectate.op.gg:4081 tjJbtRLQ/HMV7HuAxWV0XsXoRB4OmFBr 1391881421 NA1" This works fine on Windows. UserKernel updateandrun lol_launcher LoLLauncher.app is launched first. LoLLauncher is launched by the UserKernel (as we can see from the PPID) The very long command (PID: 24927) is how Spectator mode is launched, and is also launched by UserKernel. Spectator mode is launched in exactly the same way that the OP.GG .bat wanted to, with the only difference that Spectator mode connects to Riot instead of OP.GG's spectate server. I tried attaching GDB to the LolClient, but I couldn't get anything meaningful from it since it's an Adobe AIR application (and I've never used GDB with code other than mine own). Next I ran dtruss -a -b 100m -f -p $PID on everything I could think of: the LolClient, the LolLauncher and the UserKernel and skimmed the half a million lines produced. I found stuff like the GET request used to get the information of the game to spectate, but I could not see any launch of the equivalent of League of Legends.exe with spectator options. Finally, I ran lsof | grep -i lol to see if anything else was opened in the process, but didn't find anything that seemed appropriate. Open were UserKernel, LolLauncher, LolClient, Adobe AIR, LeagueofLegends and then Bugsplat, all of which are expected. None of this seemed especially relevant to figuring out how LeagueofLegends was opened into spectator mode. It obviously can be done, since Spectator mode is accessible from within the client. It seems likely that it can be done from the CLI, since Windows can do it and the clients are supposed to equals. Unless I'm missing something in the difference between how UNIX and Windows handle CLI application launches. My question is if there are any other things I can try to figure out how to launch Spectator mode myself. tl;dr: Trying to get into spectator mode from the CLI. It's possible on Windows (see first code block) but it just restarts League on Mac. What else can I try to find what call is made, and how to reproduce it? PS: Please let me know how I can improve this question or its formatting, I'd love to use StackOverflow/SuperUser, but as the guys said on the podcast this week (Ep. 59) it's very intimidating. • AT&T Application Resource Analyzer in NetBeans IDE

  Here at Øredev in Malmö I met Doug Sillars who does developer outreach for the AT&T Application Resource Optimizer. In this YouTube clip you see Doug explaining how it works and what it can do for optimizing performance of mobile applications. There's a free and open source Android app on GitHub that you can install on Android to collect data and then there's a Java Swing application for analyzing the results. And here's what that application looks like as a plugin in NetBeans IDE, click to enlarge the image, which shows the Android sources of the Data Collector, as well as the Data Analyzer ready to be used to collect data: Since the ARO Data Analyzer is written in Java and has JPanels defining its UI layer, integrating the user interface wasn't hard. Now working on the Actions, so there'll be a new ARO menu with start/stop data collecting menu items, etc, reusing as much of the original code as possible. That part is actually already working. I started up an Android emulator, then started the data collection process from the IDE. Now need to include the Actions for importing the data into the analyzer, together with a few other related features. A pretty cool feature in ARO is video capture, so that a movie can be made by ARO of all the steps taken on the device during the collection process, which will also be nice to have integrated into the NetBeans plugin. Ultimately, this will be handy for anyone creating Android applications in NetBeans IDE since they'll be able to use AT&T's ARO tool for optimizing the performance of the applications they're developing. It will also be useful for those using the built-in Cordova tools in NetBeans IDE to create iOS applications because ARO is also applicable to analyzing iOS application performance.

• Why 64 bit OS can't run a 16 bit application?

  Why is it that a 32 bit OS that is installed on a 64 bit CPU can run old DOS 16 bit applications, but if you install a 64 bit OS it cant run those applications directly and need some sort of emulation (that doesn't always work perfectly)? To be more specific I have an Intel Core 2 Due (64bit) procesor, and I had Windows Xp and Windows 7 (both 32bit) installed and it could run old dos applications, but now that I have installed Windows 7 64 bit it can't run those same application anymore?

• How do I install mod_dav_svn module on an Apache / MAMP server?

  How do I install additional modules into my server configuration? Currently all of the other modules are installed in /Applications/MAMP/Library/modules...and I see that they are mod_*.so source files, but I cannot seem to get mine to end up here... :? I am trying to set up an SVN repository and use my Apache (MAMP) server to serve the repository. I am using the subversion installation that came (pre-installed?) on Mac OS X 10.5. The repository is working, but I cannot access it remotely through my MAMP server using a client program (Dreamweaver CS5). When I try, I get an error from Dreamweaver, saying: Cannot connect to host xxx: Connection refused. This, I believe, is because I have not properly configured my Apache server to serve the svn repository. So, I added the following lines to my httpd.conf file: <Location /subversion> DAV svn SVNPath /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/svn/ AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion repository" AuthUserFile /applications/mamp/htdocs/.htpasswd Require ServerAdmin </Location> Restarted the server with the command $ /Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/apachectl -k restart I used this path because otherwise the default apachectl path is set to /usr/sbin/apachectl, which is the location of the pre-installed command on Mac OS X, since the OS comes packaged with a built-in Apache server. And I get the error: Syntax error on line 1153 of /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache/httpd.conf: Unknown DAV provider: svn I checked the upper portion of httpd.conf and see that dav_module (mod_dav.so) is loaded and is in fact in my the modules directory of my server. However, mod_dav_svn is not installed in that directory nor is it in the LoadModule portion of httpd.conf. So I need to install it, right? I have tried installing modules into my MAMP server before but was never successful...because I don't know how to do it. Can someone please walk me through how to install that module? • How to quickly start Programs like "regedit.exe" from the Windows 7 search bar using substring match

  The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

  Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today (Tuesday, April 27, 2010): KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?

• How can I merge the different keyboard indicators?

  Presently I use two application indicators showing a keyboard: input methods (iBus) keyboard layout Is there a way to make them merge into one single indicator icon ? What I have in mind is the equivalent of the messaging menu (gathering all that is related to communications) or the sound menu (gathering all the controls for sound). If it is too complicated to merge the indicators, is the merge planned for an upcoming Ubuntu release? I am on Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity as my environment.

Being a MCSD.NET for 2005, My friend and I decided to skip certification exams for 2008 exams aiming towards MCST/MCPD coz we felt it was a mere layer on the top of .NET 2.0. But not so for .NET 4.0. • Can I change the filter options in the video lens?

  Can I change the video options on the new dash menu? To be more precise, on the video file find menu filters, can I Add, Remove or Change what URLs can be include? If so how can I do? For example if I want to change in the filters youtube shows to YouTube comedy, how you do it? (I just installed MyUnity but from what I read and tested it won't fully work on Unity 2D, however I can change video filters using that)

• How to Add a Business Card Image to a Signature in Outlook 2013 Without the vCard (.vcf) File

  When you add a business card to a signature, an image of the business card is inserted into the signature and the vCard (.vcf) file is attached. If you don’t want to attach the vCard file, you can insert the image only into your signature. To insert only the image of your business card without the .vcf file, click People on the Navigation Bar at the bottom of the Outlook window. To get a business card image we can use, we must view the contacts in any form other than People, so we can open the full contact editing window. To do this, click on a different view in the Current View section of the Home tab. We chose to view our contacts in the Business Card format. Double-click on your contact in the current view. The full contact editing window displays with an image of the business card on the right. Right-click on the business card image and select Copy Image from the popup menu. To close the contact editing window, click the File tab and click Close in the menu list on the left. NOTE: You can also click the X in the upper, right corner of the contact editing window to close it. To open the signature editor, click the File tab. Click Options in the menu list on the left side of the Account Information screen. On the Outlook Options dialog box, click Mail in the list of options on the left side of the dialog box. On the Mail screen, click Signatures in the Compose messages section. NOTE: You can also access the Signatures and Stationery dialog box from the Message window for new emails and drafts. Click New Email on the Home tab or double-click an email in the Drafts folder to access the Message window. For more information, see our article about assigning a default signature. In the signature editor, right-click and select Paste from the popup menu. The image is inserted into the signature. You can also use this method to copy a business card image for use in other documents and programs. It’s also possible to insert the vCard (.vcf) file into a signature without the image. We’ll cover that topic tomorrow.

• My Laptop Beeps when I try to USB boot install

  I tried to boot install Ubuntu using my laptop (without CD Drive) using a USB drive, then it goes to the boot selection menu (the one with the Ubuntu logo installation options). I selected Install then my laptop just beeps - 1 short beep, after that it stops then nothing installs, it just stays at the installation menu, can someone please help? Laptop Specs Neo Notebook (forgot the model version) 2GB RAM running Win XP SP3 150GB Hard Drive memory Would really appreciate if someone helped, I just used the normal 12.04 installer.

• Evince 3.10 with menubar

  I find that the 2 buttoms menu from the evince v3.10.0 are not really useful. Why did ubuntu NOT re add an menubar?. It would have been looking better in unity ! The unity top panel has enough space for an normal program menu. Here is an screenshot of what i mean: (The program works already in ubuntu 13.10 with unity or cinnamon fine. Some little compiler warnings but nothing more) Example in Cinnamon or in unity

  Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today (Tuesday, April 27, 2010): KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?
