• How do you create a .XNB Font file for use with CocosSharp?

  I know the .XNB file format is an XNA thing and that CocosSharp inherits this from its MonoGame roots. However there doesn't seem to be any information on how to create your own .XNB fonts to use with CocosSharp. I've tried searching but can find any information. Could someone explain it here or point me to a tutorial on how to create .XNB font file for use with CocosSharp? A site to download already compiled .XNB Fonts would also be acceptable. Update: Another thing that makes this tricky is that I guess XNA Game Studio could be used, but it's not compatible with Windows 8.1; which is what I currently use for my dev machine...

• Why do [flush-8:16] and [jbd2/sdb2-8] occasionally use 99.99% disk IO?

  Approximately twice a week, the entire graphical interface will lock up for about 10-20 seconds without warning while I am doing simple tasks such as browsing the web or writing a paper. When this happens, GUI elements do not respond to mouse or keyboard input, and the System Monitor applet displays 100% IOWait processor usage. Today, I finally happened to have GNOME Terminal already open when the problem started. Despite other applications such as Google Chrome, Firefox, GNOME Do, and GNOME Panel being unresponsive, the terminal was usable. I ran iotop and observed that commands named [flush-8:16] and [jbd2/sdb2-8] were alternately using 99.99% IO. What are these, and how can I prevent them from causing GUI unresponsiveness? Here is dumpe2fs /dev/sdb2, if it's relevant.

• Logkeys fragile?

  The program logkeys (which seems to be the only keylogger for linux out there which I can run) has some problems, it stops logging after some time, never returns again, I don't know how to trigger that bug, if the file is edited while logging, it just stops, if the file exists before logging it doesn't try to append to it or delete it or anything, the first issue is the most important but the rest are quite annoying can anyone help me because I'm not a linux programmer (I don't really know anything about the linux API but I am a beginner C++ programmer) and I won't be able to make my own keylogger thanks for the interest BTW I'm sure I got the right input device because it starts logging then stops and I use the command "logkeys -s -u -d /dev/input/event3 -o '/home/ahmed/Documents/log.txt'"

Leadership Leadership is a cool game that looks like something you would be working in Excel and is a spin off of the classic game Moon Lander. You navigate your ship through a variety of challenging line graphs. Breakdown This one is a knock off of the classic game Break Out. Use your mouse to scroll the racket at the bottom and bounce the ball off of the text in the document. Press the space bar to pause the game and the elements will disappear…good for when the boss comes around. Cost Cutter This one is a puzzle game where it looks like your working on some bar charts in Excel. You need to click combinations of two or more blocks that are the same color. Again, hit the spacebar and the game elements will disappear. If you’re looking for a way to goof off with some simple games without the boss knowing, these will definitely do the trick. • How to install new Intel Ethernet driver

  Ubuntu 12.04 x64 doesn't recognize newest Intel Ethernet adapter on my desktop (Intel Ethernet Connection i217-V). I downloaded required driver from Intel and compiled it using make. Now I have: alex@alex64-six:~$ find / -name 'e1000e.ko' 2>/dev/null /home/alex/Documents/IntelEthernetDriver/e1000e-3.0.4/src/e1000e.ko /lib/modules/3.2.0-64-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/intel/e1000e/e1000e.ko The first line is new driver compiled from Intel sources. The second line is probably existing driver from Ubuntu distribution, which doesn't recognize new Ethernet adapter. How can I apply the new driver instead of existing one? Any other solution is welcome. For now, I cannot upgrade to latest Ubuntu release, because I use some third-party products.

And I want to give game development a Fair chance, try out developing a game from scratch using basic libraries then tryout the same in a free/open source game engine and there is a good chance I may fall in love with it, but it is poissible for a person with an Electrical and Electronics Bachelors and Embedded Systems Masters ( just a years experience in the field) go into game development and be successful in the profession. • Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

  Have got a new kickn server as new DEV machine It has got two 3ware 9650 Cached Controllers with 8 x 300gig Velociraptor Drives First Problem was the 9.5.1.1 drivers Had to press F8 as soon as the Win 2008 r2 server cd started to load. Once in Adavanced Startup options Disable Driver Signing options Next Issue was I got everything running and accidently selected wrong raid part to do install once I restarted All I would get after waiting the 10 mins for the reboot to start & loading the driver was "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"  Finally after about 1 hour I removed all drives apart from the 2 needed for system part on cont 0 deleted system part and recreated this RAID1 mirror. (ALso make sure all USB drives are out on boot..only add them when browsing  the driver to be added )  Restarted loaded driver selected install and Once system is up I will go back and add drives and new parts on both controllers AT least I did not get stuck for a day as is the norm..lol

• Set Custom Reload Times for Individual Webpages in Chrome

  Do you have a webpage that needs to be reloaded every so often or perhaps you have multiple webpages that each need their own individual reload time? Now you can have the best of both with the AutoReloader extension for Google Chrome. Using AutoReloader When you first look at the drop-down window everything will be in a neutral “waiting” state. You can start using the extension immediately by simply entering the desired “time frame” for reloading a webpage. Notice for the “Repeat Option” that “0 = Continuous”… You may want to have a quick look through the “Options” to see if there are any “operational changes” that you would like to make. Once you enter a time click on the “Set Link” to start the timer. Notice that you can view the time remaining on the “Toolbar Button” unless you disabled the feature in the “Options”. Clicking on the “Toolbar Button” will show a larger version of the timer in the drop-down window along with a “Cancel Current Timer Link”. Here is the best part of all with AutoReloader…you can set up your own customized list of “Reload Times” and then access them through the drop-down window. Using the two times shown here we were able to set the “Productive Geek Webpage” up for 30 second reloads and the “TinyHacker Webpage” up for 1 minute reloads at the same time. There was no conflict whatsoever in running both “reload times” simultaneously. This is a really terrific feature! Conclusion Whether you have only one webpage or multiple pages that need periodic reloading (such as tracking a Woot-Off or an Ebay auction) the AutoReloader extension is the perfect tool for the job. Running custom reload times simultaneously have never been easier. • Eclipse juno: Can't install RadRails throws error for a gem I have installed already

  The thing is I installed Ubuntu 12.04, Java (for Eclipse), Eclipse, ruby, ruby gems, rails. Everything went smooth. When I tried to prepare Eclipse for ruby on rails, I installed ruby dev kit plugin. This worked, but RadRails failed with this error: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found. • What must be done to allow a development team to minimize difficulties as new team members are added?

  I work at a small Web Dev firm, and have been handling all the PHP/MySQL/etc. for a while. I'm looking at improving our practices to allow for easier collaboration as we grow. Some things I have in mind are: Implementing a versioning system (source control) Coding standards for the team (unless mandated by a certain framework, etc.) Enforcing a common directory structure for our Desktops (for backup purposes, etc.) Web-based task/project/time/file/password/contact management and collaboration app(we've tried a bunch; I may just create one) What do more experienced developers view as necessary first steps in this area? Do you recommend any books? One thing to consider is that the bulk of our daily tasks involve maintenance and adding minor functionality rather than new projects, and the team size will be between 3 and 5. I just found a related question about teams that will be expanding from a solo developer.

• Can I share a TV card?

  My environment: 2 PCs, a desktop and a laptop, both on Oneiric they are connected together by ethernet wire nfs-common is installed and configured: the desktop is the server a TV tuner card is installed on the desktop, I can watch TV with the software Me-TV It works fine, TV on desktop, and my network too: I share folders thanks to NFS. But I would like more: How can I share my TV tuner card from the desktop and be able to watch TV on the laptop too? If possible I would like a solution that allows me to keep using the software Me-TV, on both PCs. I bet that there is a solution to create a fake TV card on the 2nd PC with xNBD. I'm trying xnbd-server --target /dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0 but I cant make it work. Trying to understand some examples of xNBD command lines, it seems to be meant only for sharing disk player. If someone as ever used xNBD, he's welcome.

• Listen to Local FM Radio in Windows 7 Media Center

  If you have a supported tuner card and connected FM antenna, you can listen to your favorite local over-the-air FM stations in Windows 7 Media Center. Before the FM radio option will be available in Windows Media Center, you’ll need to have a TV or Radio tuner card installed and configured. If you have a TV tuner card installed, you may already have a Radio tuner as well. Many TV tuner cards also have built in FM tuners. Open Windows Media Center, scroll the “Music” and over to “Radio.” Click on “FM Radio.”   The radio will turn on and you’ll see the current station number listed in the white box. Just below are standard “Seek” and “Tune” buttons, as well as “Preset” options. Tuning works just like a typical FM radio. Click on the (-) or (+) buttons to “Tune” or “Seek” up and down the dial. If you already know the frequency of the station, enter the numbers using the numeric keypad on the remote control or keyboard. To save the current station you’re listening to as a preset, click on the “Save as Preset” button. Type in a custom name for your preset station and click “Save.”   Once you set your presets, they will also be available on the main FM Radio screen. The transport controls at the bottom of the screen also allow you to control Volume, Pause, Play, Skip back, and Skip forward. Fast Forward and Rewind, however, are not supported.   This is a nice option if you’d like to listen to your local FM favorites on your computer, especially if those stations aren’t available online. • How to use IBM T42 laptop's built-in Bluetooth?

I have an IBM ThinkPad T42 laptop, and I have some troubles with built-in bluetooth, because in Hardware Drivers, there are no drivers for it, and in Bluetooth settings, it shows, that it has no BT devices. If I plug in an USB Bluetooth adapter, I can use easily Wammu for my mobile backup. I have no setting in BIOS, to enable, or disable it(if disable wireless refers to Wi-fi, but it is enabled too).   Completing my Computing A-level in 2003 and getting a degree in Computing in 2007, and learning my trade in a company with a lot of SQL usage, I was brought up on the idea of Relational Databases being used for storage. So, despite being relatively new to development, I was taken-aback to read a comment (on Is LinqPad site quote "Tired of querying in antiquated SQL?" accurate? ) that said: [Some devs] despise [SQL] and think that it and RDBMS are a fad Obviously, a competent dev will use the right tool for the right job and won't create a relational database when e.g. flat file or another solution for storage is appropriate, but RDBMs are useful in a massive number of circumstances, so how could they be considered a fad?

• Puppet: Making Windows Awesome Since 2011

It has the heaviest investment on Windows infrastructure with 1/3 of the platform client development staff being Windows folks.  It appears that Microsoft believed an end state configuration tool like Puppet was the way forward, so much so that they cloned Puppet’s DSL (domain-specific language) in many ways and are calling it PowerShell DSC. Puppet Labs is pushing the envelope on Windows. Here are several things to note: Puppet x64 Ruby support for Windows coming in v3.7.0. An awesome ACL module (with order, SIDs and very granular control of permissions it is best of any CM). A wealth of modules that work with Windows on the Forge (and more on GitHub). Documentation solely for Windows folks - https://docs.puppetlabs.com/windows. Some of the common learning points with Puppet on Windows user are noted in this recent blog post. Microsoft OpenTech supports Puppet. Azure has the ability to deploy a Puppet Master (http://puppetlabs.com/solutions/microsoft). At Microsoft //Build 2014 in the Day 2 Keynote Puppet Labs CEO Luke Kanies co-presented with Mark Russonivich (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/KEY02  fast forward to 19:30)! Puppet has a Visual Studio Plugin! It can be overwhelming learning a new tool like Puppet at first, but Puppet Labs has some resources to help you on that path. Take a look at the Learning VM, which has a quest-based learning tool. For real-time questions, feel free to drop onto #puppet on freenode.net (yes, some folks still use IRC) with questions, and #puppet-dev with thoughts/feedback on the language itself. You can subscribe to puppet-users / puppet-dev mailing lists. There is also ask.puppetlabs.com for questions and Server Fault if you want to go to a Stack Exchange site. There are books written on learning Puppet. There are even Puppet User Groups (PUGs) and other community resources! Puppet does take some time to learn, but with anything you need to learn, you need to weigh the benefits versus the ramp up time. I learned NHibernate once, it had a very high ramp time back then but was the only game on the street. Puppet’s ramp up time is considerably less than that. The advantage is that you are learning a DSL, and it can apply to multiple platforms (Linux, Windows, OS X, etc.) with the same Puppet resource constructs. As you learn Puppet you may wonder why it has a DSL instead of just leveraging the language of Ruby (or maybe this is one of those things that keeps you up wondering at night). I like the DSL over a small layer on top of Ruby. It allows the Puppet language to be portable and go more places. It makes you think about the end state of what you want to achieve in a declarative sense instead of in an imperative sense. You may also find that right now Puppet doesn’t run manifests (scripts) in order of the way resources are specified. This is the number one learning point for most folks. As a long time consternation of some folks about Puppet, manifest ordering was not possible in the past. In fact it might be why some other CMs exist! As of 3.3.0, Puppet can do manifest ordering, and it will be the default in Puppet 4. http://puppetlabs.com/blog/introducing-manifest-ordered-resources You may have caught earlier that I mentioned PowerShell DSC. But what about DSC? Shouldn’t that be what Windows users want to choose? Other CMs are integrating with DSC, will Puppet follow suit and integrate with DSC? The biggest concern that I have with DSC is it’s lack of visibility in fine-grained reporting of changes (which Puppet has). The other is that it is a very young Microsoft product (pre version 3, you know what they say :) ). I tried getting it working in December and ran into some issues. I’m hoping that newer releases are there that actually work, it does have some promising capabilities, it just doesn’t quite come up to the standard of something that should be used in production. In contrast Puppet is almost a ten year old language with an active community! It’s very stable, and when trusting your business to configuration management, you want something that has been around awhile and has been proven. Give DSC another couple of releases and you might see more folks integrating with it. That said there may be a future with DSC integration. Portability and fine-grained reporting of configuration changes are reasons to take a closer look at Puppet on Windows. Yes, Puppet on Windows is here to stay and it’s continually getting better folks.

While developing a web application (database driven) How much % of time does each of the following activities usually takes: -- database creation & all related stored procedures -- server side development -- client side development -- layout settings and designing I know there are lots of great web application developers around here and each one of you have done fair amount of web development and as a result there could be an almost fixed percentage of time going to each of the above activities of web developments for standard projects Update : I am not expecting someone to tell me number of hours i am asking about the average percentage of time that goes on each of the activities as per your experience i.e. server side dev 50%, client side development 20% ,,,,, I repeat there will be lots of cases that differs from the standard depending on the exact requirments of each web application project but here i am asking about Avarage for standard (no special requirment) web project

  It has been a while since I've had a blog, but I'm back into the open source dev and decided to get back into things.  I had a blog a few years back when NHibernate was infant (0.8 or something) and I was working with the Wilson ORMapper (www.ormapper.net) at the time.  Anyhow, I'm still working with NHibernate (particularily the exciting v3 alpha 1) and Castle framework. I've also written a .NET ExtDirect stack for which I'll be writing a few articles around due to its flexibility.  I decided to write yet another communication stack because all the implementations I found on the Ext forums were lacking any sort of flexibility.  So stay tuned... I'll be presenting a bunch of the extension points.

• Chainload boot of Ubuntu installed on 32GB SD card from legacy Grub boot on USB

  I have Ubuntu installed on a 32 GB SD card (in the Storage Expansion slot on an Acer Aspire One) with Grub2 installed in the same partition. I boot into legacy Grub on a USB drive and would like to boot by chainloading Grub2 from Grub (kernel/initrd or symlink booting would also be fine), but I haven't figured out how to do this from legacy Grub CLI. • Ubuntu Installation-Allocate drive space/Boot Loader

  When I try to install ubuntu 10.10 from the official livedisc I got in the mail, when I get to the "Allocate Disk Space" step I cannot get it to work. I shrank my win7 partition so I have unallocated space, then I tried using the space while it is formatted in NTFS, but the partitions will not show up in the box. /dev/sda is selected under boot loader, and I can't select anything else, but the partition box is blank so when I click "install ubuntu" it just says: "No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu." -I am trying to dual-boot win7 and ubuntu, but I was never asked in the install process whether I would like to install just ubuntu or dual-boot?

  Hey there I just recently saw stackoverflow had a game dev sister site so here I am, wondering if you experienced fellows know where one can search/look for game developers for an indie game startup? In other words: I have a game idea which I've written down with as much detail as possible (so anyone else can understand how it works) and now I'm looking for a heavy php programmer with whom to pair up in order to go from idea to reality. I'm a front-end/interface designer and an intermediate programmer. I recognize my project requires heavy programming skills which I do not have as of today =) So, what websites, communities or places do you recommend I go look into? Where do good programmers interested in indie games go look for projects if they don't have their own? Thanks in advance G.Campos

  I know there is a big push for code reviews in commercial development. However, are code reviews used in open source software or is based on trust? If so, then how are they performed? [Is it a delayed commit, "a pre commit environment", is there a tool that allows for the patch to be sent to another dev]? Are there any projects that use code reviews? From my understanding the linux kernel is mostly based around trust of the commitor. MySQL was based on the main author's approval and the performance impact.

• Strategies for very fast delivery of webpages.

  I run a website Cucumbertown with an initial pay load of nearly 9KB zipped. All my js is delayed loaded with requirejs and modernizer is the only exception. Now all my webpages are Nginx cached and only 10-15% hits go to the backend proxy. And the cache is invalidated by logged in users as proxy_cache_bypass. So for an anonymous user its nearly always a cache hit. I have some basic OS tuning with default via ip dev eth0 initcwnd 15 net.ipv4.tcp_slow_start_after_idle 0 Despite an all cache & large initcwnd my pages still take 2.5 – 3 seconds. I have a yslow score of And page speed at Are there strategies that can help deliver webpages even faster than this? Deliver pages at 1+ second time for 10KB payload? Notes: My servers run of a fairly good data center from Linode at Fremont.
