• Unable to use TL-WN821N

  Hi, I got a TP-LINK USB wireless module - TL-WN821N, using Ubuntu 10.4 (same problems were also seen in 10.10). From everything I've read online, the usb should work just fine, since the Atheros ar9170 is built into the kernel. However, when I plug it in, it is detected as a USB device, but there is no wlan associated with it, and basically - nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? what should I do so that the Atheros driver is associated with this device? btw, on Windows it works fine (with the drivers).   This is on my AMD FX(tm)-4100 Quad-Core Processor (according to /proc/cpuinfo) on a machine with two 4GB RAM DIMMs. BIOS shows 8GB RAM installed. Any help would be appreciated. • Why is the Touchpad tab missing?

  So my Dell Vostro 3360 came out of the box with an Alps touchpad which was detected as PS/2. Through these steps, I was able to get as far as it appearing to be recognized as a touchpad. Howevver, I do not get the Touchpad tab in the Mouse/Touchpad settings. Two-finger scrolling appears to work, and the Fn-F3 does disable the touchpad, but the settings are so brutal that it is almost impossible to work with. Very difficult to scroll at all accurately. I'm hoping there's some settings which can be tweaked which will help with this. Any ideas? My xinput listing is as follows: ? Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? ? • Stopping duplicate H1 and title from dynamic content

  I have a web site where there are lots of dynamically (database driven) created pages. These pages are basically used to show uploaded images The pages look a bit like this URL: http://www.mywebsite.com/page-id/page-title/ H1: View from the sea This is a big issue because I might have 10 other pages with the title: 'View from the sea'. I know the simple solution would be to make sure the pages are named differently but I have lots of users on the web site so it's not that simple. What do you guys think to putting the page-id with the page-title in the H1 tag? So it might read 437 - View from the sea. I need to differentiate the h1 titles. I think using the page-id would help but if anyone has a better solution that would be great! Thanks in advance

• Do database tables need to have IDs?

  Is an ID field is always needed in database tables? In my case I have a user with firstName, lastName and email fields. email is unique and not null, so it could be used as an ID, right? So in that case, could/should I try to remove the ID? Also I want to have another table which extends this one. Let's say its called patient and it has it's own field additionalData and I would like to link the relationship through the email of user I mentioned. So the relationship should be 1 to 1, right? and I wouldn't need the IDs? Somehow MySQL Workbench wants me to use the IDs. What do you guys think. Any suggestions on this topic?

  I want to implement functionality which let user share posts by other users similar to what Facebook and Google+ share button and twitter retweet. There are 2 choices: 1) I create duplicate copy of the post and have a column which keeps track of the original post id and makes clear this is a shared post. 2) I have a separate table shared post where I save the post id which is a foreign key to post id in post table. Talking in terms of programming basically I keep pointer to the original post in a separate table and when need to get post posted by user and also shared ones I do a left join on post and shared post table Post(post_id(PK), post_content, posted_by) SharedPost(post_id(FK to Post.post_id), sharing_user, sharedfrom(in case someone shares from non owners profile)) I am in favour of second choice but wanted to know the advice of experts out there? One thing more posts on my webapp will be more on the lines of facebook size not tweet size.

• Cursor (touchpad) moves and clicks erratically

  Sometimes (usually after two-finger scrolling) the touchpad on my Asus X54C becomes unresponsive and the cursor begins to click and move small distances. Clicking seems to happen more often than moving. Unlike with other similar problems, I've never seen the cursor move to (0, 0). Suspending (closing the lid) and unsuspending doesn't help, and neither does moving to a tty and back or rebooting. I've also tried disabling the touchpad via Fn+F9. That tends to take a long time, but doesn't have any effect. I'm on 13.10 at the moment, but I remember it happening on 13.04 as well. Here's the pointer section of xinput: ?   Asus N PC, runs 10.10 x86_64 The Asus N comes with 4 usb 2.0 ports, each labelled 2.0 on the case. Attempting to add two usb 3.0 ports to be provided by a generic usb 3.0 pci express card installed in the pci expres slot. The new card says usb 3.0 and has the blue ports. The card is installed into the laptop unpowered, then the laptop is powered on and boots normally. • Should I just always Convert.ToInt32 my integers to account for potential nullable integers?

  If my MSSQL database contains a data type that is NULL (i.e. null is allowed) then ORMs, such as EntityFramework in my case, create .NET objects that are nullable. This is great, and the way I use nullables is like this: C# int? someInt = 5; int newInt = someInt.Value; // woot VB.NET Dim someInt As Integer? Dim newInt As Integer = someInt.Value ' hooray However, recently I had to make a change to the database to make an Id field no longer NULL (nullable). This means that .Value is now broken. This is a nuisance if the Id property is used a lot. One solution that I thought of is to just use Convert.ToInt32 on Id fields so it doesn't matter if an int is nullable or not. C# int newInt = Convert.ToInt32(someInt); // always compiles VB.NET Dim newInt As Integer = Convert.ToInt32(someInt) ' always compiles Is this a bad approach and are there any alternatives?

• One to many problem with implementing 301 redirect after changed urls

  I have a problem. I had an old dynamic url which I have now split into multiple static urls. e.g. www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=1&id=2 www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=2&id=3 www.mydomain.com/product.php?type=2&id=4, etc which I have changed to something like www.mydomain.com/electronics/radio www.mydomain.com/electronics/television www.mydomain.com/mobile/smartphone, etc. Google has previously indexed the dynamic urls and search results show the old urls. I want search to point to the new urls. I have kept the old url active, so both urls work. How can I set up a 301 redirect in this case? I run IIS and it only allows a page to be redirected to 1 url. Should I deactivate the old dynamic url? In that case I lose all the previous seo rankings..

• Are two database trips reasonable for a login system?

  I am designing a login system for a project, and have an issue about it requiring two trips to the database when a user logs in. User types in username and password Database is polled and password hash is retrieved for comparative purposes (first trip) Code tests hash against entered password (and salt), and if verified, resets the session ID New session ID and username are sent back to the database to write a row to the login table, and generate a login ID for that session. EDIT: I am using a random salt. Does this design make sense? Am I missing something? Is my concern about two trips unfounded? Comments and suggestions are welcome.

• PHP OOP: Am i following right way?

  I'm learning OOP (PHP). I've realized my own CRUD Class, that performs some kind of queries SQL. Btw, a Gasoline asked us to realize a smart, simple web-app where he can update prices of his gasoline (gasoline, diesel, lpg) and via an API i could recall them and display in his site. So, I did create a new Class Gasoline but it perform some methods of CRUD Class public function getPrezzoBenzina($id) { $prezzo_benzina = $this->distributore->sql('SELECT prezzo_benzina FROM prezzi WHERE id = '.$id); return $prezzo_benzina } And so on (code is pseudocode, just to explain). I could perform all my code only with help of Crud Class... without necessity of Class Gasoline. So, what I'm missing about OOP? Where am I wrong?

• Name attribute is obsolete, what is the correct behavior when dealing with anchors?

  Putting some code through the html5 validator, I get this: Warning: The name attribute on the a element is obsolete. Consider putting an id attribute on the nearest container instead. I find that unclear. Is the "nearest container" for an anchor link the a itself, so that the correct code would be <a id='blah'> instead of <a name='blah'>? Or are empty placeholder <a> tags as a whole deprecated, and anchors can simply point to any element with an id instead?
