  I have a very simple script that is to test if running a shell_exec (or backtick operator) basically works: #!/usr/bin/php5-cli <?php echo "This is a PHP script\n"; echo `ls -l /home/stoysnet/`; Unless I run this as root, it always gives me: $ ./foo.php This is a PHP script Warning: _shell_exec(): Permission Denied in /home/stoysnet/foo.php on line 5 I've tried running this via PHP in a few different ways, but I always get the same error. However, when I put the script into a subdirectory of /etc/ owned by root:root and executed as root it works. What gives?

• Downloading Python 2.5.4 (from official website) in order to install it

  I was quite hesitant about whether I should post this question here on "StackOverflow" or on "SuperUser", but finally decided to post it here as Python is more a programming language rather than a piece of software. I've been recently using Python 2.5.4 that is installed on my computer, but at the moment I am not at home (and won't be for about two weeks from now), so I need to install the same version of Python on another computer. This computer has Windows XP installed – just like the one that I have at home. The reason why I need Python 2.5.4 is because I am using “Google App Engine”, and I was told that it only supports Python 2.5 However, when I went to the official Python page for the download, I discovered that certain things have changed, and I don’t quite remember where exactly from that site I had downloaded Python 2.5.4 on my computer at home. I found this page: http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.5.4/ Here is how it looks: (If you can’t see it here, please check it out at this address: http://brad.cwahi.net/some_pictures/python_page.jpg ) A few things here are not clear to me. It says: “For x86 processors: python-2.5.4.msi For Win64-Itanium users: python-2.5.4.ia64.msi For Win64-AMD64 users: python-2.5.4.amd64.msi” First of all, I don’t know what processor I am using – whether mine is “x86” or not; and also, I don’t know whether I am an “Win64-Itanium” or an “Win64-AMD64” user. Are Itanium and AMD64 also processors? Later it says: “Windows XP and later already have MSI; many older machines will already have MSI installed.” I guess, it is my case, but then I am totally puzzled as to which link I should click as it seems now that I don’t need those three previous links (as MSI is already installed on Windows XP), but there is no fourth link provided for those who use “Windows XP” or older machines. Of course, there are these words after that: “Windows users may also be interested in Mark Hammond's win32all package, available from Sourceforge.” but it seems to me that it is something additional rather than the main file. So, my question is simple: Where in the official Python website I can download Python 2.5.4, precisely, which link I should click?

• asp.net dynamic sitemap with querystring? Session variable seems like overkill.

  Hi, I'm using ASP.NET WebForms. I'm using the standard sitemap provider. Home User Account Entry Going to the home page should have a user selection screen. Clicking on a user should list out the user's accounts with options to edit, delete, add accounts. Selecting an account should list out all the user's account's entries with options to edit delete and add entries. How do you normally pass this information between pages? I could use the query string, but then, the sitemap doesn't work. The sitemap only has the exact page without the query string and therefore loses the information. /User/Account/List.aspx?User=123 /User/Account/Entry/List.aspx?User=123&Account=322 I could use a session variable, but this seems overkill. Thoughts and suggestions very appreciated. Thanks!

• silverlight 3 navigation page not availble in VS as item to add

  I've recently upgraded my computer from Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I've re-installed VS 2008 web express, and re-installed all the silver light sdk's, tools, etc. But now when I want to add a Silverlight Navigation Page, it is not avialble to me in the list of items that can be added. The navigation dll is installed, as my project existed before the OS upgrade. The program still runs just fine as is, but I want to add another navigation page item to the project, and I'm stumped for how to do it. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

• mpicc hangs when called from makefile; runs fine as single command

  i'm trying to compile WRF (doubt that's relevant) and am having a problem where mpicc will hang when run w/ the compile script. icc and mpif90 have no issues. the compile script is executed w/ #!/bin/csh -f just to be verbose, here's an example. i run the script and get here make[3]: Entering directory `/home/jason/wrf/wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE' mpicc -DMPI2_SUPPORT -DMPI2_THREAD_SUPPORT -DFSEEKO64_OK -w -O3 -DDM_PARALLEL -DMAX_HISTORY=25 -DNMM_CORE=0 -c rsl_bcast.c and hang. so then i run that line by itself jason@server:~/wrf/wrf3.5$ cd /home/jason/wrf/wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE jason@server:wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE$ mpicc -DMPI2_SUPPORT -DMPI2_THREAD_SUPPORT -DFSEEKO64_OK -w -O3 -DDM_PARALLEL -DMAX_HISTORY=25 -DNMM_CORE=0 -c rsl_bcast.c jason@server:wrf3.5/external/RSL_LITE$ compiles instantly. starting the compile script again does the exact same thing but on the next file. i have no idea what to do, and this is basically impossible to google for.

  I have a master page, which has a style sheet, which has the following line: .idle { background-image: url( '../../Images/blue_bg.png' ); } All my pages inherit from this master page. And this works well when the URL is http://www.domain.com/home/details/5, however the URL is http://www.domain.com/home/create, then, of course, blue_bg.png cannot be found because `../../Images/blue_bg.png' resolves to a directory one higher where there is nothing there. I tried the trick suggested by @codemeit in a similar question, but I can't plop down C# in a style sheet, can I? How is this typically handled?

  I have a web service load driver that's a Windows Script File (WSF), that includes some VBScript and JavaScript files. My web service requires that the incoming message is base64 encoded. I currently have a VBScript function that does this, but it's very inefficient (memory intensive, mostly due to VBScripts awful string concatenation) [Aside; Yes, I've seen Jeff's latest blog post. The concatenation is happening in a loop across messages that are 1,000's to 10,000's bytes in size.] I've tried using some custom string concatenation routines; one using an array and one using ADODB.Stream. These help, a little, but I think it would help more if I had some other way of encoding the message rather than via my own VBS function. Is there some other way of encoding my message, preferebly using native Windows methods?

  Hello! I'm running the micro framework Bottle on Google App Engine. I'm using Jinja2 for my templates. And I'm using Beaker to handle the sessions. I'm still a pretty big Python newbie and am pretty stoked I got this far :) My question is how do I access the session data within the templates? I can get the session data no problem within the actual python code. And I could pass the session data each time I call a jinja template. But since I need the session data in the main menu bar of the site... that means I would have to pass it on every single page. Does anyone know if I can access it directly in the templates? For example I need the session data for my header links: Home | FAQ | Login or Home | FAQ | Logout Any help is greatly appreciated! :D

Most things were going pretty smooth until I tried to start up my thin server.   In code complete, there's a nice table listing how productive a programmer is depending on language. Jeff Atwood has a nice blog post about it. This chart is at least 4 years old by now. I'm curious: have there been any more recent studies done on this? (insert standard anti-flamewar boilerplate here... we're all adults) Update: I appreciate everyone's opinions on the subject and whether or not this is a relevant question or not. But that's not really what I'm asking for. I'm wanting any studies on the subject. I'm inclined to agree with most of the opinions posted thus far, but I'd like to see if there's any research to back that up. And I'm also aware that choice of programming language is a complicated subject that depends on other factors like developer familiarity. To me, this is all the more reason to have these kinds of discussions backed by research. Also, thanks for the link, Robert Gamble.

• Kohonen SOM Maps: Normalizing the input with unknown range

  According to "Introduction to Neural Networks with Java By Jeff Heaton", the input to the Kohonen neural network must be the values between -1 and 1. It is possible to normalize inputs where the range is known beforehand: For instance RGB (125, 125, 125) where the range is know as values 0 and 255: 1. Divide by 255: (125/255) = 0.49 (0.49,0.49,0.49) 2. Multiply by two and subtract one: ((0.49*2)-1)=-0.02 (-0.02,-0.02,-0.02) The question is how can we normalize the input where the range is unknown like our height or weight. Also, some other papers mention that the input must be normalized to the values between 0 and 1. Which is the proper way, "-1 and 1" or "0 and 1"?

  Hi guys, I've just completed my first app and having tested I'm ready for submission. However, despite numerous web searches and reading, I'm struggling to finalise the method required to enable me to have a different name on the app store to the name that appears under the app on the device home screen. In the plist.info file there is reference to bundle display name, executable name, bundle name, bundle identifier, product name etc. So, for example, say I would like the app store name to display as: HELLO WORLD and I would like the name below the icon on the device home screen to display as: HELLO How should I enter the data in the plist.info file to achieve the above? Also I want more than your average wiki page and also something language agnostic or preferably with Java examples.   Hi All, I have my csv file in my public folder, and i'm trying to load it from a migration, but I get a file not found error using this script : ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute( "load data local infile '#{RAILS_ROOT}/public/muds_variables.csv' into table muds_variables " + "fields terminated by ',' " + "lines terminated by '\n' " + "(variable_name, definition)") I've checked and re-checked the file path, and that's definitely where it lives, I've also tried it just using the file name without any of the path, and a few other combos, but I can't make it work :(. can anyone help me out with this? here's the error : Mysql::Error: File '/home/chris/rails_projects/muds/public/muds_variables.csv' not found (Errcode: 2): load data local infile '/home/chris/rails_projects/muds/public/muds_variables.csv' into table muds_variables fields terminated by ',' lines terminated by ' ' (variable_name, definition) -C

• Firefox doesn't show my CSS

  Hi, I have a strange problem, Firefox doesn't show the CSS of the page I'm doing, but Internet Explorer does. I have tried at home and at one of my friend's home, and it happens in both. But, if I go to the Firefox Web Developer toolbar (i have it installed) and select CSS=Edit CSS, then the styles appears appears in the page and in the editor! As soon I close it, they disappears again. I have no idea what the problem is :( Do you have any idea about what could be the problem? thanks in advance.

  I have an ASP.NET form with three text inputs, one each for "Work Phone", "Home Phone" and "Cell Phone". Each of these text inputs has a RequiredFieldValidator associated with it. I also have a DropDownList where the user can select the preferred phone type. I want to only require the field that is selected in the DropDownList. For example, if the user selects "Work Phone" from the DropDownList, I want to disable the RequiredFieldValidator for "Home Phone" and "Cell Phone", thereby only making the "Work Phone" field required. I have a method that enables and disables these validators based on the value of the DropDownList, but I cannot figure out when to call it. I want this method to run before the validation takes place on the page. How would I do that?

From the outside I can login via ssh. I've configured putty as follows: session: host name and port number connection ssh tunnel: forwarded ports: L5900|192.168.0.23 the local address is: 192.168.1.45 When I make the connection I can login to the remote machine. Then I open Remote Desktop Viewer. I click connect protocol: vnc host: ? use host as ssh tunnel: ? I don't know what to use for the last two options. Which ip-addresses should I use?

• Remove address fields from Mac address book using Applescript

  Hello, A Facebook Sync app filled the address fields of my Mac Address Book contacts with their cities. Having tons of people who have useless addresses makes it difficult to search by people on Google Maps app (ending up scrolling through many many people- I only want to see those who have proper addresses entered). I want to clear all the home address fields in my address book using applescript. I wrote something small but couldn't get it to work, probably needs some help from somebody who knows applescript :) tell application "Address Book" repeat with this_person in every person repeat with this_address in every address of this_person if label of this_address is "home" then remove this_address from addresses of this_person end if end repeat end repeat end tell I tried to deduct the logic of multiple addresses/phones from other scripts but could only find adding them, not removing them. • Why does xdebug crash apache on every XAMPP install I've tried?

  I've installed the Windows XAMPP package on three separate computers, 2 running Windows Vista 32 bit ( 1 Ultimate / 1 Home Premium ) and 1 running Windows Vista 64 Home Premium. After enabling xdebug in php.ini and restarting apache, viewing the default XAMPP localhost index causes apache to crash in the same way every time, reporting 'php_xdebug.dll' as the Fault Module Name.
