C# Spawn Multiple Threads for work then wait until all finished

just want some advice on "best practice" regarding multi-threading tasks. as an example, we have a C# application that upon startup reads data from various "type" table in our database and stores the information in a collection which we pass around the application. this prevents us from hitting the database each time this information is required. at the moment the application is reading data from 10 tables synchronously. i would really like to have the application read from each table in a different thread all running in parallel. the application would wait for all the threads to complete before continuing with the startup of the application. i have looked into BackGroundWorker but just want some advice on accomplishing the above. Does the method sound logical in order to speed up the startup time of our application How can we best handle all the threads keeping in mind that each thread's work is independent of one another, we just need to wait for all the threads to complete before continuing. i look forward to some answers

Hi, I'm developing an application on an embedded linux OS (uClinux) and I need to be able to lock the mutex more than once (by the same thread). I have a mutex and a mutexattr defined and initialized as follows: pthread_mutexattr_t waiting_barcode_mutexattr; pthread_mutex_t waiting_barcode_mutex; pthread_mutexattr_init(&waiting_barcode_mutexattr); pthread_mutexattr_settype(&waiting_barcode_mutexattr, PTHREAD_MUTEX_RECURSIVE); pthread_mutex_init(&waiting_barcode_mutex, &waiting_barcode_mutexattr); But when I try to acquire the lock twice it blocks on the second lock: pthread_mutex_lock(&waiting_barcode_mutex); pthread_mutex_lock(&waiting_barcode_mutex); Am I initializing it wrong or is there a better way of accomplishing the same? Basically I'm trying to make a little app for watching offline content. So there's a moment where the user selects to download the contents (and the app should download about 300 small files and images). I'd like to show the user how does the process go if he enters the proper activity. Showing a list of all the files, telling what has been already downloaded, in progress or waiting for download. My problem is that I really don't know what approach to take for achieve this. Since the download should last until finished I imagine the solution is an Service, but whats best? an IntentService, a Bound Service or an Standard Service calling a startService() for each download? And how can I keep my objects updated for displaying them later? should I use a database or objects in memory? Thanks

I'm trying to optimize SQL queries in Akonadi and came across the following problem that is apparently not easy to solve with SQL, at least for me: Assume the following table structure (should work in SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL): CREATE TABLE a ( a_id INT PRIMARY KEY ); INSERT INTO a (a_id) VALUES (1), (2), (3), (4); CREATE TABLE b ( b_id INT PRIMARY KEY, a_id INT, name VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL ); INSERT INTO b (b_id, a_id, name) VALUES (1, 1, 'foo'), (2, 1, 'bar'), (3, 1, 'asdf'), (4, 2, 'foo'), (5, 2, 'bar'), (6, 3, 'foo'); Now my problem is to find entries in a that are missing name entries in table b. E.g. I need to make sure each entry in a has at least the name entries "foo" and "bar" in table b. Hence the query should return something similar to: a_id = 3 is missing name "bar" a_id = 4 is missing name "foo" and "bar" Since both tables are potentially huge in Akonadi, performance is of utmost importance. I have a MKMapView inside a UITableView as a custom cell (don't ask ;) - don't know if it matters really), for which I register a regionDidChangeAnimated delegate method. This method gets called three times when the UITableView is loaded - once with the actual region and then two more times with a region that is way off. In the simulator, I consistently get a region with center (+37.43997405, -97.03125000). On the device, it seems to depend on the location reported by the location manager, which initializes the map view. Why am I getting three regionDidChangeAnimated calls? And why are the center coordinates for the last two of them off? This is the code I use to get the center coordinates: - (void)mapView:(MKMapView *)mapView regionDidChangeAnimated:(BOOL)animated { CLLocation *l = [[CLLocation alloc] initWithLatitude:self.mapView.centerCoordinate.latitude longitude:self.mapView.centerCoordinate.longitude]; (....)

Hi, I need to make a stored procedure or function that returns a set of rows. I've noted that in a stored procedure i can SELECT * FROM table with success. If i fetch rows in a loop and SELECT something, something_other FROM table once per loop execution, I only get one single result. What I need to do is looping, doing some calculations and returning a rowset. What's the best way to do this? A temporary table? Stored functions? Any help appreciated.

Smth like select * from `table` where type in (1,3,4,12) and obj_id in (5,15,14,17) But this query returns also records with type = 3 and obj_id = 14, and for example type = 1 and obj_id = 17. p.s. moderators, please fix my title, I dont know how to describe my question.

Should i use TabContainer for multiple pages?

I'm considering if it is a good idea to use an ASP.Net TabContainer-Control in the way that every TabPanel contains content of a different page. For example: Next i want to implement in my application is the masterdata management. Normally i would create one aspx page for every masterdata-table (f.e. Customer - MD_Customer.aspx). Then i would add a link into my Menu to this page. Now i'm thinking of creating one aspx page for all(Masterdata.aspx) with a Tabcontainer and an UpdatePanel for every type of Masterdata. The link it the menu could have an additional MDType as URL-Parameter. My main concerns are related to performance(one "page" for every TabPanel currently means 7 "pages" in one) and maintainability because of increasing complexity. Is it a good approach or a bad idea? Supporting rotation sensors in Symbian across multiple devices in one executable

I'm puzzling my head as to how some application appear to support the couple of Rotational Sensor APIs for Symbian, specifically the Sensor API and the Sensor Framework (both the 5th ed. and the 3rd ed. FP2 backport). For example, I believe that Gravity will support rotation in N95 and also newer models from the same binary (could be wrong there...). If I use the Sensor Framework then my app will not install on an N95 (it gives me a System Error -1), whereas if I use the Sensor API (RRSensor) then it will only install on an N95 and no other phones. This is most likely due to the available libraries on those devices. I am trying to find some way of abstracting things such that I can use exactly the same binary for all devices. The only alternative I can see is trying to use ECOM plugins and then installing the relevant library using conditionals in my PKG file. Does anyone know of a better/easier way?

Communication between Multiple Threads in a WPF Application

I'm creating a WPF application that uses a custom object to populate all the controls. The constructor of that object is initiated by an EventHandler that waits for an API. The problem I'm having is when I try to access any information from that object using a button for example, it returns an error saying "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it". I'm assuming this is because the EventHandler creates a new thread which doesn't allow the Main Thread to have access to it. Any ideas on how to get around this? I'm basically having the error "The calling thread cannot access this object because a different thread owns it" when trying to get or set a CollectionViewSource.

WPF problem modify style of images in multiple Button Templates

I'm trying to create a control panel for a video camera, the panel has buttons for up, down, left and right etc. Each camera function up, down, left and right is represented by three images (see code below) for the left side, middle and right side. The control panel is circular so the corner images kind of overlap (its complicated to explain this without a visual). When I click on up for example I have to hide the initial three images (leftside, middle and right side) and display another three images for left , middle and right that indicate that the button is pressed. I am achieving this by having a grid inside a button template. The problem I have is that for the corner images for the control there are really four images that represent this. For example for the top left corner the four images would be represent 1. Top not clicked. 2. Top Clicked and 3. Left Not clicked and 4. Left Clicked. My problem is if I need to make the images contained within the Top button have precedence when the top control is clicked or the images in the left button have precedence when the left button is clicked. So it's like I want to modify the left button's image visible property when the top button is clicked and vise versa. This is really difficult to explain so I apologize if it makes little sense but I can email the source code on request if anyone is interested in my predicament. <Grid> <Canvas>  <Button Caching result of SELECT statement for reuse in multiple queries

I have a reasonably complex query to extract the Id field of the results I am interested in based on parameters entered by the user. After extracting the relevant Ids I am using the resulting set of Ids several times, in separate queries, to extract the actual output record sets I want (by joining to other tables, using aggregate functions, etc). I would like to avoid running the initial query separately for every set of results I want to return. I imagine my situation is a common pattern so I am interested in what the best approach is. The database is in MS SQL Server and I am using .NET 3.5.

iphone best practice, how to load multiple high quality images

Hi guys and girls, I have about 20-ish high quality images (~3840x5800 px) that I need to load in a simple gallery type app. The user clicks a button and the next image is loaded into the UIImageView. I currently use [UIImage imageWithContentsOfFile:] which takes about 6 seconds to load each image in the simulator :( if I use [UIImage imageNamed:] it takes even longer to load but caches the images which means its quicker if the user wishes to see the same images again. But it may cause memory problems later with all that caching crashing my app. I want to know whats the best practice for loading these? I'm experimenting with reducing image file size as much as is possible but I really need them to be high quality image for the purpose of the app (zoomable, etc.). Thanks for any advice

Then whatever resultant dataelemIDs from the above query should be matched with outputdataelemID of Transformdataelem table and we shud get the respective input dataelemId's. Again with these matched inputdataelemID's we shud get the dataelemname's from datelem table.

How do I pass that object to be referenced by those 2 other require files? Basically the mod.php is a class that has an array list generated in its __construct(). I want to use that array list data inside the startup.php and tools.php file but not sure how to pass in the existing one without calling "new" inside both of those files separately which doesn't do what I need since it resets everything. Field annotated multiple times by the same attribute

For my ASP.NET MVC application I've created custom validation attribute, and indicated that more than one instance of it can be specified for a single field or property: [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Field | AttributeTargets.Property, AllowMultiple = true)] public sealed class SomeAttribute: ValidationAttribute I've created validator for such an attribute: public class SomeValidator : DataAnnotationsModelValidator<SomeAttribute> and wire up this in the Application_Start of Global.asax DataAnnotationsModelValidatorProvider.RegisterAdapter( typeof (SomeAttribute), typeof (SomeValidator)); Finally, if I use my attribute in the desired way: [SomeAttribute(...)] //first [SomeAttribute(...)] //second public string SomeField { get; set; } when validation is executed by the framework, only first attribute instance is invoked. Second one seems to be dead. I've noticed that during each request only single validator instance is created (for the first annotation). How to solve this problem and fire all attributes?
