• Automatic login option is missing in 12.04

  Automatic login option is missing from System Settings User Accounts, how can I solve this? I either can't set the automatic login by editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf [SeatDefaults] autologin-user=x autologin-user-timeout=0 user-session=ubuntu greeter-session=unity-greeter After restart login screen asks for my password. There is a thread in Ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11889259 . It's in lubuntu forum, but there are ubuntu users afected too. I'm runing 12.04 (precise) 64-bit with Kernel Linux 3.2.0-24-generic. Excuse my bad english, please.

• ubuntu freezes right after loading

• Why does apt-get keep waiting for headers on Oracle repository?

  I have this at the end of my /etc/apt/sources.list to retrieve Oracle code: deb http://oss.oracle.com/debian unstable main non-free When I run sudo apt-get update, the app gets stuck displaying this message: 100% [Waiting for headers] If I remove this, apt-get update runs without error. Is there a new, recommended URL for Oracle products and, generally, how do you fix this problem? I am pretty sure this did not happen on 11.10 and has only started with the move to 12.04. • xdebug 2.2.1 installed but not working with cgi

  I've installed (via pecl) xdebug. It is installed (as phpinfo() output indicates), but it doesn't seems to work with CGI (with CLI it works). I've restarted apache, without result. Any ideas? I was fast and I said "yes".So my original aim to teach people to troubleshoot MySQL changed to teaching of how different is MySQL from Oracle in troubleshooting aspects. Although both RDBMs have very much in common they are definitely very different. So what I am going to speak about this time is nuances of how MySQL stores data, how it manages locks, why its high availability solutions: MySQL Cluster and Replication have same names as Oracle's, but work differently and more. And, of course, I will tell how to troubleshoot it all.

  I've Ubuntu 12.10.1 LTS x62 fresh of installation... My dash is empty, search doesn't work and applications list is empty. If I run the Ubuntu Software Center it freeze in a blank screen. • Moving from a traditional in memory Java session to persistent storage sessions

  We have decided to take the plunge and move from using a typical java session provider in Tomcat/Jetty/etc to persisting everything to a central datastore. We are looking at using MongoDB for this. A few options come to mind... http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Tutorial/MongoDB_Session_Clustering This is nice because it will "auto-magically" persist our session to a Mongo installation. I am concerned however that we will not have fine grained control of what is happening. https://github.com/mattinsler/com.lowereast.guiceymongo/ GuiceMongo is interesting as it integrates with Guice. Perhaps we could persist everything via this ORM. Has anybody had to deal with this kind of move? It seems that moving from in memory to persistent session storage has a lot of gotchas.

• Why does IDLE continue to crash? [migrated]

  Idle keeps crashing and I can't figure it out. After restarting the computer and reinstalling Python, none of which seemed to work, I looked to my peers and was told to "install one of the Tcl/Tk". After getting another opinion I was also told that I already had this and found it to be true but decided to try it anyway since it continued to crash. Nothing has improved and I have an assignment due. Any ideas on why this continues to happen and what I can do to fix the crash? The point is that there's no requirement to use NetBeans IDE if you want to create applications on top of its framework.

• UI font has rendering glitches in GNOME Shell

  I don't really know how to describe this problem in English. A picture can say more words - look at the tabs at the top of the linked image. The current font settings are shown as well. I don't know what basic info I should provide so if something missing, please tell me. Ubuntu 12.04 GNOME Shell 3.4.1 I know, a reboot can make everything normal but I'm looking for a more permanent solution that can fix this problem (or bug). • HTML Tidy for NetBeans IDE 7.4

  The NetBeans HTML5 editor is pretty amazing, working on an extensive screencast on that right now, to be published soon. One thing missing is HTML Tidy integration, until now: As you can see, in this particular file, HTML Tidy finds 6 times more problems (OK, some of them maybe false negatives) than the standard NetBeans HTML hint infrastructure does. You can also run the scanner across the whole project or all projects. Only HTML files will be scanned by HTML Tidy (via JTidy) and you can click on items in the window above to jump to the line. Future enhancements will include error annotations and hint integration, some of which has already been addressed in this blog over the years. I have connected my ipod touch 32gb in my ubuntu 10.10 os.It's connected on os and shows in desktop. but it's not showing as a device in Rhythmbox music player. and also I can't open directly like folder or drive or usb device. when I try to open it show this Error: Could not display "gphoto2://[usb:001,003]/". • Does the .biz internet top-level domain deserve to be taken seriously?

  .com is the most preferable TLD most of the time, so many people choosing domain names have to pick between desiredname.something_else or totallydifferent.com. From wikipedia: The biz TLD was created to relieve some of the demand for domain names in the com top-level domain, and to provide an alternative for businesses whose preferred domain name in com had already been registered by another party. .org at least implies an organization, whereas .com is the most generic 'commercial'. But .biz seems like a total duplicate that doesn't seem in widespread use <pun>and deserves to be closed. </pun>. Does .biz have any advantages over .com? Are .biz domains worth registering if .com is already taken?

• How to add metadata to images using Shotwell

  Using Ubuntu 13.04. I have a very basic question about Shotwell. I would like to add a desciption to my photos. I right-click on an image in Nautilus. Choose Open with Shotwell photo viewer. I can't find a way to edit any metadata for the photo. As an example, Shotwell help: http://yorba.org/shotwell/help/view-view.html ... says that I should be able to select Photos Edit title, but I don't have this option in my menu. (I have 'Photo' but not 'Photos'). F2 does nothing for me. My menu options are: File, Edit, View, Photo, Help. I'm missing something very basic here. Grateful for your help!

• I can't login to facebook from any browser

  I'm Using UBUNTU 12.04. I'm having problems with Facebook. It really hard to login. Takes like 3 or 5 min. At first I thought it was a flash problem but then I realized it could be some proxy's conf file. Other sites doesn't have problems. Yesterday I tried Tor-browser-bundle and I installed privoxy using this rules http://www.neilvandyke.org/privoxy-rules/ . Today I removed privoxy and the conf file with the Ubuntu software center and ubuntu-tweak. I don't really find the problem and my windows pc does not have any problem with the same modem. I don't have an ISP'S PROXY it just a direct Internet connection using automatic DHCP. Maybe I am missing something else. But I want to be sure so, I'm asking. PD: Sorry for my English I'm Argentinian.

• Dual boot: Linux Grub loader does not show windows

  my computer previously only had windows installed on it. Recently I decided to try Linux and opted for a dual boot so I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit on a separate hard drive within my computer. After installation my computer would directly boot to Linux upon start up and did not even show a grub screen. Using the boot-repair I was finally able to make the Grub loader show a boot list upon start up, but the Windows partition is not there. • Which app can I use for easily annotating pictures/screenshots?

  Often I need to annotate (draw some arrows, lines, basic shapes like squares, ellipses etc and enter some text) on top of pictures (JPG, PNG images) and screenshots (again png images). I would also need to be able to crop, resize etc. I tried the Gimp but I could only enter text and perform all image transformations but couldn't find a way to draw boxes etc. I finally settled to Openoffice.org draw, but I know that isn't what I want, because in oodraw I need to insert my pic into a drawing and resize it (or the drawing) to fit and then go about making changes and finally export to png... Is there any image editor that allows adding shapes and text to jpg & png files and save the modified file in its place? If the tool can also have template collections (like dia does) for shapes that is an added bonus.

The wikipedia link above is an overview of the concept. The short form explanation is that a co-op is a worker-owned business. Also there is the notion that every worker owns shares in the business. I am interested in knowing whether an example of a "programmer's/IT co-op" even exists. Note: I am not talking about nor asking about a government-funded incubator nor any other socialized, state supported group. I also don't mean "co-working", which is renting an office with other self employed people doing their own thing. I mean a going, profitable IT business operating in a competitive environment that is worker-owned and run.

• Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

  I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. • UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

• Can a domain specific language be used to representing the Open SRD

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

• Can I use my VirtualBox 3.* VMs with VirtualBox 4.0? If so, how come the repository doesn't have it?

  I had the following repository for virtualbox in my /etc/apt/sources.list: deb ttp://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick non-free Then I found out there was a new version when I opened it today (the program prompted me with a window to manually download it from Oracle's site). Then I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and got nothing. Here you have a way to add virtualbox-4.0 to your apt-get, but the problem is that it isn't updating, meaning I would have the two installed. I'm also worried if I'll have to do something like that each time it updates since that would defeat the point of apt-get. I've been using virtualbox with the apt-get update for more than a year now and this is the first time it has happened, so I was wondering if there would be a way to just update my current installation.
