• NHibernate update using composite key

  Hi, I have a table defnition as given below: License ClientId Type Total Used ClientId and Type together uniquely identifies a row. I have a mapping file as given below: <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" auto-import="true"> <class name="Acumen.AAM.Domain.Model.License, Acumen.AAM.Domain" lazy="false" table="License"> <id name="ClientId" access="field" column="ClientID" /> <property name="Total" access="field" column="Total"/> <property name="Used" access="field" column="Used"/> <property name="Type" access="field" column="Type"/> </class> </hibernate-mapping> If a client used a license to create a user, I need to update the Used column in the table. As I set ClientId as the id column for this table, I am getting TooManyRowsAffectedException. could you please let me know how to set a composite key at mapping level so that NHibernate can udpate based on ClientId and Type. Something like: Update License SET Used=Used-1 WHERE ClientId='xxx' AND Type=1 Please help. Thanks, Mahesh

• How do I lookup a JNDI Datasource from outside a web container?

  I have the following environment set up: Java 1.5 Sun Application Server 8.2 Oracle 10 XE Struts 2 Hibernate I'm interested to know how I can write code for a Java client (i.e. outside of a web application) that can reference the JNDI datasource provided by the application server. The ports for the Sun Application Server are all at their defaults. There is a JNDI datasource named jdbc/xxxx in the server configuration, but I noticed that the Hibernate configuration for the web application uses the name java:comp/env/jdbc/xxxx instead. Most of the examples I've seen so far involve code like Context ctx = new InitialContext(); ctx.lookup("jdbc/xxxx"); But it seems I'm either using the wrong JNDI name, or I need to configure a jndi.properties or other configuration file to correctly point to a listener? I have appserv-rt.jar from the Sun Application Server which has a jndi.properties inside of it, but it does not seem to help. • Which is the best free ide/plugin for struts2?

  Hello friends, I have just learnt struts 2 and now I have taken up a full fledged project in it. I learnt the basics of struts 2 in Netbeans with it's struts2 plugin. But I am not at all happy with it, as it is very basic and I end up doing most of the work. It is obviously better than plain-vanilla text editor, but still not at all near to what netbeans provides for springs and hibernate. I know because netbeans provides native support for springs and hibernate, it is meant to be better. I don't mind changing my IDE if i get better support for struts2! So my questions are Please list all the free IDEs where native support for struts2 is provided. And if possible please compare them. Please list all the plugins that are available for eclipse for struts2 development. I have heard there are better plugins in eclipse. Also, if there are better plugins in any other IDE (other than netbeans or eclipse of course), please list them giving links. Please give me some tips which I'll need before starting a full blown project in Struts2. I haven't worked on any project on Struts2.   I'm having a hard time trying to get my stored procedure works with NHibernate. The data returned from the SP does not correspond to any database table. And later on in CheckNamedQueries function, it is not able to find the persistor for SomeClass. I've checked all the obvious things (e.g. make hbm as an embedded resource) and my code isn't too much different from other samples I found on the web, but somehow I just can't get it working. Any idea how I can resolve this issue?

• Is the order of params important in NHibernate?

  If I have an int parameter followed by a string parameter in a sproc I get the following error: Input string was not in the correct format However, if I switch those parameters in the sproc than I get the result set I expect. Are params sorted by data type, or do I have to do anything special in my config file? • Getting a lightweight installation of java eclipse.

  Having dealt with yet another stupid eclipse problem, I want to try to get the lightest, most minimal eclipse installation as possible. To be clear, I use eclipse for two things: - Editing Java - Debugging Java Everything else I do through emacs/zsh (editing jsp/xml/js, file management, svn check-in, etc). I have not found any aspect of working in eclipse to do these tasks to be efficient or even reliable, so I do not want plug-ins that relate to it. From the eclipse.org site, this is the lightest install of eclipse that they have, and I don't want any of those things (bugzilla, mylyn, cvs, xml_ui), and have actually had problems with each of them even though I do not use them. So what is the minimal build I can get that will: 1) Ignore svn metadata 2) Includes the full-featured editor (intellisense and type-finding) 3) Includes the full-featured debugger (standard eclipse/jdk) Does not have any extra plug-ins, platforms, or "integrations" with other platforms, specifically, I don't want to deal with plug-ins relating to: Maven, JSP Validation, Javascript editing or validation, CVS or SVN, Mylyn, Spring or Hibernate "natures", app servers like a bundled tomcat/glassfish/etc, J2EE tools, or anything of the like. I do primarily spring/hibernate/web-mvc apps, and have never dealt with an eclipse plug-in that handles any of it gracefully, I can work effectively with my own toolset, but eclipse extensions do nothing but get in the way. I have worked with plain eclipse up to Ganymede, MyEclipse (up to 7.5), and the latest version of Spring-SourceTools, and find that they are all saddled with buggy useless plug-ins (though the combination is always different). Switching to netbeans/intellij is not an option, and my teammates work with svn-controlled .class/.project files, so it pretty much has to be eclipse. Does anyone have any good advice on how I can save a few grey hairs?

• Career Choice in JEE, are EJBs standard?

  I have chosen to go the JEE route for a career path but I have been having a hard time determining which core technologies that I need to be most familiar with. I'm at the point I can write web apps without a problem with JSP's and regular servlets using JDBC or some basic Hibernate stuff (I know, HTML, CSS and have used MVC extensively on a number of different platforms). What I'm trying to find out is if there is some standard as far as J2EE technologies go. When I look at most of the Job listings, occasionally you will see someone mention Struts or Spring but rarely do I see any mention of EJB's. So my question is really, are EJB's basically required by most JEE employers? Or are most of them working with POJO's? Is it a mix? I have a hard time figuring out if I should put the majority of my time into Struts, Spring/Hibernate, EJB's, etc. And if I do need to master EJB's what version should I learn? 2.1 or 3.0. 3.0 has some obviously better features but I figure a lot of companies probably chose to write their apps in 2.1 just because it was the standard of the time and now migrating would be a big deal. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

When I specify the "Root POM" option in my Hudson job to be the copy of pom.xml in its workspace directory, the build fails citing compilation failure due to missing classpath entries. • Representing element as boolean with JAXB?

  We have this XML: <Summary> <ValueA>xxx</ValueA> <ValueB/> </Summary> <ValueB/> will never have any attributes or inner elements. It's a boolean type element - it exists (true) or it doesn't (false). JAXB generated a Summary class with a String valueA member, which is good. But for ValueB, JAXB generated a ValueB inner class and a corresponding member: @XmlElement(name = "ValueB") protected Summary.ValueB valueB; But what I'd like is a boolean member and no inner class: @XmlElement(name = "ValueB") protected boolean valueB; How can you do this? I'm not looking to regenerate the classes, I'd like to just make the code change manually. Update: In line with the accepted answer, we created a new method returning the boolean value conditional on whether valueB == null. As we are using Hibernate, we annotated valueB with @Transient and annotated the boolean getter with Hibernate's @Column annotation.

• How to use Nhibernate Validator + NHib component + ddl

  I just configured my NHibValidator. My NHibernate creates the DB schema. When I set MaxLenght="20" to some property of a class then in the database the length appears in the database column. I am doing this in the NHibValidator xml file. But the problem is that I have components and cannot figure out how to achieve this behaviour. The component is configured correctly in the Customer.hbm.xml file. EDIT: Well, I found that Hibernate Validator users had the same problem two years ago. http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HV-25 Is this an issue for NHibernate Validator or it is fixed. • Enum exeeding the 65535 bytes limit of static initializer... what's best to do?

  I've started a rather large Enum of so called Descriptors that I've wanted to use as a reference list in my model. But now I've come across a compiler/VM limit the first time and so I'm looking for the best solution to handle this. Here is my error : The code for the static initializer is exceeding the 65535 bytes limit It is clear where this comes from - my Enum simply has far to much elements. But I need those elements - there is no way to reduce that set. Initialy I've planed to use a single Enum because I want to make sure that all elements within the Enum are unique. It is used in a Hibernate persistence context where the reference to the Enum is stored as String value in the database. So this must be unique! The content of my Enum can be devided into several groups of elements belonging together. But splitting the Enum would remove the unique safety I get during compile time. Or can this be achieved with multiple Enums in some way? My only current idea is to define some Interface called Descriptor and code several Enums implementing it. This way I hope to be able to use the Hibernate Enum mapping as if it were a single Enum. But I'm not even sure if this will work. And I loose unique safety. Any ideas how to handle that case?

• GWT in its web-mode throws StatusCodeException but in its hosted-mode , it's working perfect

  Hi to all, I am new to this forum. Actually I have an issue here regarding my application which is hibernate+struts based application. Recently we have decided to integrate GWT into our application. We are using gwt 1.5.3 build. We have set up everything exactly as we find in documentation and various blogs. Yeah I am now in a very nervy state as gwt in its web- mode is treating me in a very embarassing manner. But it is compiling and working perfectly fine in its hosted-mode and everything works fine as we expected and designed. When I try to integrate GWT with our application i.e. running in tomcat (http://localhost:8080/myapps/example.do? reqCode=takeMeToGWT&userId=12&templateId=10). The gwt page is loaded partially and in the midst it throws an exception i.e. StatusCodeException. This doesn't happen when I run the gwt application in hosted-mode ( http://localhost:8888/com.myapp.gwt.MyApp/Home.html ) . I am using Intellij Idea 8, struts 1.3 ,hibernate 3 and tomcat 5.5 . • Should I invest in GraniteDS for Flex + Java development?

  I'm new to Flex development, and RIAs in general. I've got a CRUD-style Java + Spring + Hibernate service on top of which I'm writing a Flex UI. Currently I'm using BlazeDS. This is an internal application running on a local network. It's become apparent to me that the way RIAs work is more similar to a desktop application than a web application in that we load up the entire model and work with it directly on the client (or at least the portion that we're interested in). This doesn't really jive well with BlazeDS because really it only supports remoting and not data management, thus it can become a lot of extra work to make sure that clients are in sync and to avoid reloading the model which can be large (especially since lazy loading is not possible). So it feels like what I'm left with is a situation where I have to treat my Flex application more like a regular old web application where I do a lot of fine grained loading of data. LiveCycle is too expensive. The free version of WebOrb for Java really only does remoting. Enter GraniteDS. As far as I can determine, it's the only free solution out there that has many of the data management features of LiveCycle. I've started to go through its documentation a bit and suddenly feel like it's yet another quagmire of framework that I'll have to learn just to get an application running. So my question(s) to the StackOverflow audience is: 1) do you recommend GraniteDS, especially if my current Java stack is Spring + Hibernate? 2) at what point do you feel like it starts to pay off? That is, at what level of application complexity do you feel that using GraniteDS really starts to make development that much better? In what ways?

• Are application servers necessary? Advantages of using one? (And other JEE questions)

  Apologies for the long question.. there seems to be other similar questions on here but none really clear up my confusion. I'd be really grateful if someone could confirm or correct my understanding: Java Enterprise Edition is a set of APIs for building enterprise applications, which take away the burden of developing parts of the system that aren't actually features of the application you are trying to build (i.e. messaging, transactions etc). To do this, you can use an application server, which implements these APIs. So you could use JBoss, Glassfish, WebSphere, WebLogic etc which would provide your application with these enterprise services. However, there are many other implementations of these individual services available such as ActiveMQ for messaging, Hibernate for persistence, OpenEJB etc. You can download these implementations as Java libraries and include them in your application, and use the services they provide in a similar way to using the services provided by an application server. So if my understanding is correct, my questions are: I've read a lot of places that application servers are necessary for JEE features like EJB, but can't you just use an implementation such as OpenEJB and not need an application server at all? Are there any features that an application server provides which you cannot get from another source? Why would/wouldn't I choose an application server over a custom stack such as Tomcat, OpenEJB, ActiveMQ, and Hibernate? Is Spring a complete alternative to JEE? Does it ever require an application server or always just a servlet container? Why would someone choose Spring over JEE? Any help would be much appreciated!

  Hello, Im doing a project with C# winforms. This project is composed by: Client project: Windows Forms where user will do CRUD operations on the models; Server project; Common Project: This project will hold the models (in the image only have the model Item); ListSingleton: Remote Object that will do the operations on the models; I already have all the communication working, but now I need to work on the persistence of the data in a mysql database. I was trying to use nHibernate but I’m having some troubles. My main problem is how to organize my hibernate configuration. In which project do I keep the mapping? Common project? In which project do I keep the hibernate configuration file (App.config)? ListSingleton project? In which project do I do this: Configuration cfg = new Configuration(); cfg.AddXmlFile("Item.hbm.xml"); ISessionFactory factory = cfg.BuildSessionFactory(); ISession session = factory.OpenSession(); ITransaction transaction = session.BeginTransaction(); Item newItem = new Item("BLAA"); // Tell NHibernate that this object should be saved session.Save(newItem); // commit all of the changes to the DB and close the ISession transaction.Commit(); session.Close(); In the ListSingleton project? Altho I had reference to the Common Project in the ListSingleton I keep getting error in the addXml line… My mapping is correct because I tried with a one-project solution and it worked :X

• How to find unmapped properties in a NHibernate mapped class?

  I just had a NHibernate related problem where I forgot to map one property of a class. A very simplified example: public class MyClass { public virtual int ID { get; set; } public virtual string SomeText { get; set; } public virtual int SomeNumber { get; set; } } ...and the mapping file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="MyAssembly" namespace="MyAssembly.MyNamespace"> <class name="MyClass" table="SomeTable"> <property name="ID" /> <property name="SomeText" /> </class> </hibernate-mapping> In this simple example, you can see the problem at once: there is a property named "SomeNumber" in the class, but not in the mapping file. So NHibernate will not map it and it will always be zero. The real class had a lot more properties, so the problem was not as easy to see and it took me quite some time to figure out why SomeNumber always returned zero even though I was 100% sure that the value in the database was != zero. So, here is my question: Is there some simple way to find this out via NHibernate? Like a compiler warning when a class is mapped, but some of its properties are not. Or some query that I can run that shows me unmapped properties in mapped classes...you get the idea. (Plus, it would be nice if I could exclude some legacy columns that I really don't want mapped.)

• NHibernate not dropping foreign key constraints.

  I'm new to NHibernate, so this is probably my mistake, but when I use: schema.Create(true, true); I get: SchemaExport [(null)]- There is already an object named 'XXX' in the database. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: There is already an object named 'XXX' in the database. I grabbed the SQL code nHibernate was using, ran it directly from MSSMS, and recieved similar errors. Looking into it, the generated code is not properly dropping the foreign key constraints. The drop looks like this: if exists (select 1 from sysobjects where id = OBJECT_ID(N'dbo[FK22212EAFBFE4C58]') AND parent_obj = OBJECT_ID('YYY')) alter table dbo.YYY drop constraint FK22212EAFBFE4C58 Doing a "select OBJECT_ID(N'dbo[FK22212EAFBFE4C58]')" I get null. If I take out the "dbo" (i.e. "select OBJECT_ID(N'[FK22212EAFBFE4C58]')") then the ID is returned.
