  • How much effort is SQL Server 2008 Administration?

    Hi, I am looking for a suitable hosting environment for an ASP.NET MVC application. One of the options I have is renting a Hyper-V server and installing my license of SQL Server 2008 on it. I'm a bit wary of shared hosting since the one I have tried so far did not seem to have very consistent performance. One potential problem is that I would have I do not not know much about SQL Server administration, so I am not sure if this is a good option. I've been running a failover cluster of two linux dedicated servers for over 5 years now and MySQL never gave me any trouble. But that was Linux, and it might be different with a windows system. Is running a halfway efficient MS SQL Server 2008 difficult? Does it require any in-depth administration knowledge? Or perhaps recurring administration effort (such as keeping the server up to date with the latest patches)? Or is it rather an "install and forget" experience similar to MySQL?

  • Resgen al.exe generated resources do not work within .net library

    Hi, I am currently working on a library in .Net and I planned to make the strings that are used within the library into culture specific resource files. I made Resources.resx, Resources.en-US.resx and Resources.ja-JP.resx file. I also deleted the Resources.designer.cs file autogenerated by visual studio 2008. I am loading Resources through my custom ResourceManager object [using GetString method]. The problem that I am facing is that when I compile the library within visual studio and set the culture from the calling application, everything is working fine. But if I manually go to the directory and change a string for a culture and regenerate the satellite assembly with resgen and al.exe, the string displayed, falls back to the invariant culture. It may be corrupt." So the Document Template works correctly in the Site Content Type (where it does me no good), but is not working in the List Content Type (where I really need it). Now, I know I could put this in _layouts, but from what I've read, _cts is the way to do it. What am I doing wrong?

I downloaded it on my desktop and tried to "python manage.py runserver" or even "python manage.py shell" I get a Error: No module named messages No other messages, no stack trace, nothing..Anyone have any idea whats going on?   • CentOS 5.5 APIC issue on ESX 4.1 & ML115

    Hi, I've just installed vSphere 4.1 on an HP ProLiant ML115 G5 Quad-core and am trying to install CentOS 5.5 as a guest system. However, when the guest boots up I get a calibrate_APIC_clock warning and a kernel panic message. I've come across this knowledge base article on the vmware website which suggests moving the guest onto another Intel based host (!). Funnily enough I don't have a collection of spare host servers sitting around, so can anyone suggest another solution? Alternatively, would installing an earlier version of CentOS get around this issue, or would a yum update put me back to square one? How about BIOS settings, could anything be tweaked there? Thanks.

    Is there any (possibly free or open-source) virtual WDM audio driver for Windows, with additional processing plugins, which would add one more layer between windows applications and actual sound card's WDM audio driver, allowing to: Add software DSPs to general audio output. I would like to be able to use custom effects, like compressor, or stereophonic-to-binaural converter for listening online's streaming media on headphones, etc. Connect its output to some custom buffer instead of the sound card. For example, to be able to record audio, or to send audio via wireless connection to some other wireless source? Virtual audio driver was just my idea how to solve these issues - if you know other way, please share your knowledge. I need this for Windows 7 and/or Windows XP.

    I recently registered a domain and got hosting from Dreamhost. But when even after three days, the website was not accessible, I contacted support about it. This is the response the support person gave me: "My apologies! The DNS had gotten stuck, so I went ahead and pushed that through for you. Please allow 2-3 hours for the DNS to propagate." Now I have to say that my knowledge regarding these things is virtually zero, and I couldn't understand what the support person meant, so I ran a search and it seemed that Mr. Google knew just as much as I did regarding this. Can someone tell me what "dns getting stuck" means?

    Can someone informed, please give a lengthy reply about the differences and advantages/disadvantages of both approaches? I am not a DNS expert, not a programmer. I have a decent basic understanding of DNS, and enough knowledge to understand how things like the kaminsky bug work. From what I understand, DNSCurve has stronger encryption, is far simpler to setup, and an altogether better solution. DNSSEC is needlessly complicated and uses breakable encryption, however it provides end to end security, something DNSCurve does not. However, many of the articles I have read have seemed to indicate that end to end security is of little use or makes no difference. So which is true? Which is the better solution, or what are the disadvantages/advantages of each? edit: I would appreciate if someone could explain what is gained by encrypting the message contents, when the goal is authentication rather than confidentiality.     I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2.     I am trying to run net time on a Windows 7 box with an account that is part of the Administrators group. When I run the command net time from an elevated command prompt I get the following error: System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. Why is this happening?   • What's wrong with my custom patch cables?

    I have a box of bulk Cat5e riser cable left over from when I had my house wired. I figured I could use this to make some custom length cables for connecting my computers, switches, etc. I had a crimper already so I bought a bag of RJ45 plugs. I made a few cables several years ago, but my experience/knowledge with this sort of thing is minimal. None of my cables are working. I don't have a tester so I just plug the cable into a computer and switch but I get no link light. I wired them them all straight-through and visual inspection doesn't show any problems. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?
