  • Why the SQL Server FORCESCAN hint exists

It is often generalized that seeks are better than scans in terms of retrieving data from SQL Server. The index hint FORCESCAN was recently introduced so that you could coerce the optimizer to perform a scan instead of a seek. Which might lead you to wonder: Why would I ever want a scan instead of a seek? 12 must-have SQL Server toolsThe award-winning SQL Developer Bundle contains 10 tools for faster, simpler SQL Server development. • Showplan Operator of the Week – BookMark/Key Lookup

Fabiano continues in his mission to describe the major Showplan Operators used by SQL Server's Query Optimiser. This week he meets a star, the Key Lookup, a stalwart performer, but most famous for its role in ill-performing queries where an index does not 'cover' the data required to execute the query. If you understand why, and in what circumstances, key lookups are slow, it helps greatly with optimising query performance.

  • What is Deep Linking and How is it Useful For My Website?

People talking about deep linking, well I don't honestly see it a lot, but it's definitely very powerful, when you can understand how/why it works and how you can create deep backlinks, you'll be able to understand how to improve the traffic you get from Google, but ranking for more keywords. Deep link is more or less building backlinks to inner pages of your website, for example instead of just building backlinks for your index/domain, you should really build backlinks to your inner pages as well.

  • How can I advetise efficiatly on my sites? [on hold]

    - by Smillification
Are there any ad networks that give publishers/websites the ability to display adverts that are chosen by the publisher immediately on page load. Lets say the page loads, and a script inserts certain key words that the ad network uses to search their inventory of adverts and assigns the nearest one with matching tags to the publisher advert area? I know Google's adsense and many other similar services index/reads the pages content and then assign certain advert depending on the content with little or no control by the publisher... Any help is appreciated.

  • Getting Started With XML Indexes

XML Indexes make a huge difference to the speed of XML queries, as Seth Delconte explains; and demonstrates by running queries against half a million XML employee records. The execution time of a query is reduced from two seconds to being too quick to measure, purely by creating the right type of secondary index for the query. • Redirect root path on root domain to subdomain

    - by maknz
Say there's a web application that runs on example.com, would there be a penalty for 301 redirecting the root of the domain (example.com/) to subdomain.example.com for purposes of hosting the marketing website for an application? Obviously we would expect subdomain.example.com to be what is ranked in the search engine, not example.com. We would want other paths on example.com like example.com/path/to/resource to index normally, and be unaffected by the 301 on the root path.

  • Directory structure and script arguments

    - by felwithe
I'll often see a URL that looks something like this: site.com/articles/may/05/02/2011/article-name.php Surely all of those subdirectories don't actually exist? It seems like it would be a huge redundancy, even if it was only an identical index file in every directory. To change anything you'd have to change every single one. I guess my question is, is there some more elegant way that sites usually accomplish this?

  • Subdomain redirects to subdirectory [duplicate]

    - by redraw
This question already has an answer here: How do I get the root index page to redirect to a subdirectory without affecting SEO? 1 answer Supposing I have folder called "support" inside root folder "/public_html". I've added a subdomain in my server's panel so that when going to "support.mydomain.com" it redirects to "mydomain.com/support" The problem is that redirection is reflected on the browser's address bar, and I want to make that subdomain work like "base domain". i.e "support.mydomain.com/folder-inside-support" Is it something to be with .htaccess file?

If yes, is it convenient to use this function ? Any idea is welcome. Thanks

  • Displaying desired properties from search results with grails compass

    - by ombud
Hi, I've been stumped with the problem of displaying a selected set of properties returned as a result via a Compass query in grails. I have 300 columns in my domain class and what I'd like to do is to return ONLY THOSE values I specify (around 10 - 15 properties/fields/columns). All the 300 columns have been indexed, btw. I know I can do this using Lucene by cycling through returned hits and selectively calling a=getField(column_name), et c. My qiuestion is, how do I do the same thing using thee Compass Grails plugin ? Any help will gratefully be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation, Ombud
