• How to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 in EFI mode with Encrypted LVM?

  I'm trying to properly install Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with the alternate install CD ".iso" on a lenovo Thinkpad X220. Default Hard Disk (with a pre-installed version of Windows 7) has been replaced with a brand new SSD. The UEFI BIOS of the lenovo Thinkpad X220 is set to "UEFI Boot only" & "USB UEFI BIOS Support" is enabled (I'm using an external USB DVD reader to perform Ubuntu installation). The BIOS is a Phoenix SecureCore Tiano, BIOS version is 8DET56WW (1.26). The attempts below are made with the UEFI BIOS settings described above. Here's what I've tried so far: Boot on a live GParted CD Create a GPT partition table Create a FAT32 partition for UEFI System, set the partition to "EF00" type ("boot" flag) Leave remaining space unformated Boot on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with alternate CD: Perform the install with network updates enabled Use manual partitioning FAT32 partition created with GParted is used as "EFI System partition" Remaining space is set to be used as "Physical volume for LVM" Then "Configure encrypted volumes" using the previous "Physical volume for LVM" as the encrypted container, passphrase is setup. "Configure the Logical Volume Manager" creating a volume Group using the encrypted container /dev/mapper/sda2_crypt Creation of the Logical Volumes "Create logical volume", choosing the previously created volume Group Assign a mount point and file system to the Logical volumes : LV-root for / LV-var for /var LV-usr for /usr LV-usr-local for /usr/local LV-swap for swap LV-home for /home NOTE: /tmp would be in RAM only using TMPFS Bootloader step: neither my ESP partition (/dev/sda1, /dev/sda or MBR) seems to be the right place for GRUB, I get the following message (X suffix is for demonstration only): unable to install grub in /dev/sdaX Executing 'grub-install /dev/sdaX' failed This is a fatal error. Finish installation without the Bootloader & Reboot The system doesn't start, there's no EFI/GRUB menu at startup. What are the steps to perform a clean and working installation of Ubuntu 12.04.1 Precise Pangolin, 64bit version in U(EFI) mode using the encrypted LUKS + LVM scheme described above?

• Security and encryption with OpenVPN

  The UK government is trying to implement man-in-the-middle attack systems in order to capture header data in all packets. They are also equipping the "black boxes" they will use with technology to see encrypted data (see the Communications Data Bill). I use a VPN to increase my privacy. It uses OpenVPN, which in turn uses the OpenSSL libraries for encrypting data. Will the government be able to see all the data going through the VPN connection? Note: the VPN server is located in Sweden, if that makes a difference.

• Can't drag files from Explorer into Notepad++ running as administrator on Windows 8

  If I have Notepad++ running as administrator, I can't drag files from explorer on to it (they are rejected with the 'stop' cursor) and if I try to use the explorer extension right click 'Edit with Notepad++' it throws an error. Opening the files using the Notepad++ 'Open' dialog, or even double clicking them in Explorer works as it should. (Note double clicking is not a solution as very few of the files I want to open are default to Notepad++) I have UAC set to 'never notify'. Using the hack where UAC 'admin approval mode' is disabled fixes the issue, but kills the ability to use Metro apps.

• How to have Windows 7 remember a password for a Domain

  About eighteen months ago, I wrote a post covering how to clear saved passwords in Windows XP.  This week at work I was reminded how useful it is to not only deleted saved passwords, but to also setup wildcard credentials using this same interface. The scenario that I run into as consultant working at a client site, is that my laptop is not a member of the Windows Domain that my client uses to secure their network. So, when I need to access file shares, shared printers, or even the clients internal websites, I’m prompted for a name and password.  By creating a wildcard entry on my laptop (for the user account that the client issued to me), I avoid this prompt and can seamlessly access these resources.  (This also works when you’ve configured Outlook to access Exchange via RPC over HTTP.) How to create a credential wild card entry in Windows 7: Go to your Start Menu --> Type "user" into the Search box Click on the “Manage your credentials” in the column on the left Click on the “Add a Windows credential” link Enter the Domain (in my case my client’s domain), something like this: *.contoso.com Enter the username and password That’s it.  You should now be able to access resources in that Domain without being prompted for your name and password.  Please note: if you are required to change your password periodically for that domain, you’ll need to update your saved password as well.

(stack B) retransmit 200 byte data (step 3) (stack A) send ACK for 200 byte data and the next expected seq number as the one for 70 bytes data Question: Should 70 bytes data be also transferred with the ACK in step 8? Note that the retransmission timer for step 6 has not expired yet.

  Hi, I have the ubntun machine... under my /home/user/.ssh i have my id_rsa.pub key... i carefully copied that key and paste my key to respository Git account. After that i try to connect from locat system to my git respository i got the following error warning: Authentication failed. Disconnected; no more authentication methods available (No further authentication methods available.). . I removed SSH in system and re-enable and did agin.. but no luck.... I have no idea what's happening with my SSH key ....can any one please tell me on this... Note : i noticed in my home /home/user/.ssh && /home/user/.ssh2

• Upload a directory recursively to an FTP server

  I am writing a Linux shell script to copy a local directory to a remote server (removing any existing files). Local server: ftp and lftp commands are available, no ncftp or any graphical tools. Remote server: only accessible via FTP. No rsync nor SSH nor FXP. I am thinking about listing local and remote files to generate a lftp script and then run it. Is there a better way? The XFBML version defaults to the current page. • How can I disable recent documents in Unity?

  How do I disable the tracking and display of recently opened files (and whatever else is remembered) in a default installation of Ubuntu 11.10? (Note that this is not a duplicate of How can I keep recent files from appearing in Unity?, since that question and its answers are concerned with temporary and specific filtering. I want to disable it completely for a single user account.) Okay, to deflect the inevitable and expand on my motivation... While trawling the usual forums and Google results for a solution, it (unsurprisingly) seems that the near-universal use cases for this request are either browsing porn or Warhammer research. And the obvious solution to this is to create another user account to contain all evidence. However, this is not why I'm asking, and I don't say that to get all high and mighty about it, it's because this answer won't help. (Even though I really don't have any interest in Warhammer, and I have no idea how that paint pot and brush ended up in my drawer, no that's not glue on my thumb, etc.) My actual use case is that I use my personal laptop for presentations in different circles of my life. I have a user account set up with all the settings I like for presentations (shortcuts, small launcher, default associations, etc). But I don't want an accidental keystroke (or the find dialog) to display other recent presentations I've given, or the files I used in composing the presentation, or whatever. I also don't want to have to recreate this profile for every single presentation I might give. I just want a nice little isolated, memoryless, clean corner of my notebook for public display.

• Mail sending program & exchange server

  Hi, I have been asked to send about 6500 e-mails to addresses in a member database. I have written the program, that sends and reports the ones that couldn't send etc. But my concern is that this program will just call smtpclient.Send(); and I don't know what happens if 6000 mails are in the queue. Server is MS Exchange as I have been told. Note: I am planning to send them, say 500 by 500. But what if an exception occurs on the Exchange server at 120... then what happens to the other ones.. I will appreciate little insight to the subject. Thanks in advance.

• Part 4: Development Standards or How to share

  Although we usually introduce the custom development part in EBS projects as “a small piece only” and “we will avoid as best as possible”, the development effort can be enormous and should therefore be well addressed by project standards. Any additional solution or additional software tool or product shall influence the custom development rules (by adding, removing or replacing sections). It is very common in EBS projects to create a so called “MD.030 Development Standards” document and put everything what’s related to development conventions into it. This document gets approval and will be shared among all developers. Later, additional sections have to be added, and usually the development lead is responsible for doing this. However, sometimes used development techniques are not documented properly, and therefore the development solutions deviate from each other, or from the initially agreed standards. My advice would be the following: keep the MD.030 as a base document, and add a Wiki on top. The “Development Wiki” covers the following: Collect input from every developer without updating the MD.030 directly Collect additional topics that might need further specification Allow a discussion about such topics by reviewing/updating the wiki directly Add also decisions or open questions right into it. In one of my own projects we were using this “Developer Wiki” quite extensive, and my experience is very positive. We had different sections in it, good cross references, but also additional material like code templates, links to external web pages etc. By using this wiki, the development standards became “owned” by the right group of people, the developers. They recognized that information sharing can improve the overall development quality, but will also reduce the workload on individuals. Finally, the wiki was much more accurate and helpful for the daily development work than our initial MD.030, and we all decided to retire the document completely. Summary: Information sharing in the development area is very important! The usual “MD.030 Development Standards“ is a good starting point, but should be combined with a “Development Wiki”, allowing everyone to address and discuss necessary improvements. A well-structured Wiki can replace the document in some sections completely. • Xorg becomes unkillable at 3AM

  Most nights, some time in the hour of 3AM my xorg process will increase to 100% cpu and gpu load will also increase to 100%. The process also becomes unkillable. I cannot sudo kill -9 it or get back control with sudo service lightdm restart. I also cannot switch to to a tty screen with ctrl + alt + f1. To reboot I have to log in with ssh, but this is not perfect because if I reboot while it is doing this my ZFS pool will fail to mount when it comes back up ( that is where my /home is ). Does anyone have any ideas as to why I can't stop and restart xorg, or even better, know why this is happening? Thanks NOTE: For anyone who comes looking for the same problem. I disabled catalyst AI and made it through the night. I've been up for 1 day 3 hours now. My record for this month is 2 days and 19 hours without a problem. My all time record is 6 days without a crash. I'll post here if it crashes again or I'm able to set a new record.

• How do I upgrade Django 1.3.1 to 1.4? Any tips, tutorials, or warnings?

  Django 1.4 was recently released. Almost all the information about Django 1.4 is in the release note, but I didn't see anything about how to upgrade. Should I just remove the django folder inside Python's site-packges and download 1.4? I think I originally installed Django using emerge and yum but I'm not sure if the package management systems are up-to-date with Django 1.4 yet. That might be ok on my server instance (Gentoo Linux), but on my local instance I am using virtualenvwrapper (on Mac OS 10.7), so maybe I want to create a new Python virtual environment for Djago 1.4. Or maybe not since I don't really care about backward compatibility with 1.3.1.

• How to mount a cdrom to a kvm/qemu domain?

  I have set up a virtual machine running Windows XP on my Ubuntu laptop. Using the virt-manager GUI application, I can insert a CD in my drive and go to Details?IDE CDROM 1 and click on the Connect button. Then the CD becomes available in my virtual machine. How can I do the same through the command line? Obviously, I'd like to be able to disconnect from the command line too. Note: I can start the VM from the command line using virsh start testbed (testbed being the name of the domain/VM).

• All Tasks..Advanced Operations option missing from Certificaces MMC Snap-In

  I am trying to follow the instructions in this article to create a custom certificate to support SSL on a web server. I'm stick on the following step: Click on Personal – All Tasks – Advanced Operations – Create Custom request The problem is that on the web server (Windows Server 2003 R2) I don't have an "Advanced Operations" option under "All Tasks". I do on my desktop machine (Windows 7), but not on the server. All the documentation I can find indicates that it should be available on WS-2003-R2, but it just isn't. Note: I'm going through this manual process because I need to specify a alternate host names in the CSR, which you can't do through the IIS 6.0 console certificate managment functionality. Any suggestions for how to make this option show up?

• Redirect Web Subfolder to Root (/folder to /)

  I am trying to redirect /folder to / using .htaccess but all am I getting is the Apache HTTP Server Test Page. My root directory looks like this: / .htaccess -/folder -/folder2 -/folder3 My .htaccess looks like this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/folder/ RewriteRule (.*) /folder/$1 What am I doing wrong? I checked my httpd.conf (I'm running Centos) and the mod_rewrite library is being loaded. As a side note, my server is not a www server, it's simply a virtual machine so it's hostname is centosvm. • Can I improve my AdWords quality scores with better landing pages?

  I noticed that I have some keywords in my AdWords that are totally applicable to my site but the quality score of the keyword is 4 or 5. I'd like to get it up higher by creating custom versions of my site's home page (landing page) targeted specifically for people searching on those keywords. So for example, if we pretend my site sells pet food, my current home page has the phrase "dog food." I have a specific AdWords campaign for people searching on cat food (with cat food-specific ads). I'm thinking about changing the URL on those ads to something like http://mysite.com/cat.html, so a different home page comes up with the phrase "cat food." My thinking is that will help Google see that this new landing page is appropriate for the keywords and will raise my quality score for the "cat food" keywords. (Note that none of what I'm doing is shady or misleading; nobody would disagree that all of the keywords and ads I've created are perfect and appropriate for what my site offers.) Question: is what I describe the correct way to raise poor quality scores on keywords, and will it help?

• Linux wall command won't broadcast strings

  I read here that this should work, but it doesn't: //usage: wall [file] root@sys:~> mesg is y root@sys:~> wall "who's out there" wall: can't read who's out there. If mesg is set to y, what's preventing me from broadcasting a string? Note, I did confirm that the file option works: root@sys:~> wall test Broadcast Message from root@sys (/dev/pts/1) at 15:23 ... • How do you stop Linux from re-setting the display brightness?

  After manually setting the display brightness on my laptop, the system re-sets the value. If the laptop is plugged in, the value is set to full brightness; if it is not plugged in, it is set to dimmer. How do I stop that behavior? Note that I am not talking about what it does in response to the event of plugging in or unplugging my system. It changes on it's own - usually several minutes after I change the brightness value. I have observed this behavior on different systems, different distributions, and different desktop environments.

For example:   #dcli -f /tmp/oraloader-1.1.0.0.3-1.x86_64.rpm  -d /tmp/oraloader-replace.rpm 3. 3.  As the root user, use dcli from the first Oracle Big Data Appliance server to replace the old oraloader rpm with the new one.  For example:  #dcli "rpm -e oraloader ; rpm -Uvh /tmp/oraloader-replace.rpm" On other hardware: 1. 1.  Unzip oraloader-1.1.0.0.3.x86_64.zip at <location of install> 2. 2.  Update OLH_HOME to point to <location of install>/oraloader-1.1.0.0.3
