• Cloud storage provider lost my data. How to back up next time?

  What do you do when cloud storage fails you? First, some background. A popular cloud storage provider (rhymes with Booger Link) damaged a bunch of my data. Getting it back was an uphill battle with all the usual accusations that it was my fault, etc. Finally I got the data back. Yes, I can back this up with evidence. Idiotically, I stayed with them, so I totally get that the rest of this is on me. The problem had been with a shared folder that works with all 12 computers my business and family use with the service. We'll call that folder the Tragic Briefcase. It is a sort of global folder that's publicly visible to all computers on the service. It's our main repository. Today I decided to deal with some residual effects of the Crash of '11. Part of the damage they did was that in just one of my computers (my primary, of course) all the documents in the Tragic Briefcase were duplicated in the Windows My Documents folder. I finally started deleting them. But guess what. Though they appeared to be duplicated in the file system, removing them from My Documents on the primary PC caused them to disappear from the Tragic Briefcase too. They efficiently disappeared from all the other computers' Tragic Briefcases as well. So now, 21 gigs of files are gone, and of course I don't know which ones. I want to avoid this in the future. Apart from using a different storage provider, the bigger picture is this: how do I back up my cloud data? A complete backup every week or so from web to local storage would cause me to exceed my ISP's bandwidth. Do I need to back up each of my 12 PCs locally? I do use Backupify for my primary Google Docs, but I have been storing taxes, confidential documents, Photoshop source, video source files, and so on using the web service. So it's a lot of data, but I need to keep it safe. Backup locally would also mean 2 backup drives or some kind of RAID per PC, right, because you can't trust a single point of failure? Assuming I move to DropBox or something of its ilk, what is the best way to make sure that if the next cloud storage provider messes up I can restore?

• Unit test approach for generic classes/methods

  Hi, What's the recommended way to cover off unit testing of generic classes/methods? For example (referring to my example code below). Would it be a case of have 2 or 3 times the tests to cover testing the methods with a few different types of TKey, TNode classes? • Can't store UTF-8 in RDS despite setting up new Parameter Group using Rails on Heroku

  I'm setting up a new instance of a Rails(2.3.5) app on Heroku using Amazon RDS as the database. I'd like to use UTF-8 for everything. Since RDS isn't UTF-8 by default, I set up a new Parameter Group and switched the database to use that one, basically per this. Seems to have worked: SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%character%'; character_set_client utf8 character_set_connection utf8 character_set_database utf8 character_set_filesystem binary character_set_results utf8 character_set_server utf8 character_set_system utf8 character_sets_dir /rdsdbbin/mysql-5.1.50.R3/share/mysql/charsets/ Furthermore, I've successfully setup Heroku to use the RDS database. Now, I enter a comment through the form in the app: "Úbe® ƒåiL", but in the database I've got "Úbe® Æ’Ã¥iL" It looks fine when Rails loads it back out of the database and it is rendered to the page, so whatever it is doing one way, it's undoing the other way. If I look at the RDS database in Sequel Pro, it looks fine if I set the encoding to "UTF-8 Unicode via Latin 1". So it seems Latin-1 is sneaking in there somewhere. Somebody must have done this before, right? What am I missing?

  Hi all, I'm developing an application using asp.net mvc, NHibernate and DDD. I have a service layer that are used by controllers of my application. Everything are using Unity to inject dependencies (ISessionFactory in repositories, repositories in services and services in controllers) and works fine. But, it's very common I need a method in service to get only object in my repository, like this (in service class): public class ProductService { private readonly IUnitOfWork _uow; private readonly IProductRepository _productRepository; public ProductService(IUnitOfWork unitOfWork, IProductRepository productRepository) { this._uow = unitOfWork; this._productRepository = productRepository; } /* this method should be exists in DDD ??? For the mirror I create a primary partition over the full HD and set partition type to FD. So, should I do the same for the Stripe? Create partition on /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 (primary over full 'HDD', set partition type correctly) and then do the stripe on the partition? Is there a correct way here or are there any advantages/disadvantages to a solution? Thank you

  I have a system with two screens. On the primary screen, I want to use Windows in a normal way. On the secondary screen, I want to display a window of a certain application and nothing else. In no case should anything else than this specific window show up on the secondary screen: no other applications, no dialog boxes. If possible, I want to restrict the mouse pointer to the primary screen as well. I tried UltraMon, but I think my requirements go beyond its features. Any ideas?

  If there are two physically separate hard drives, should they be treated as two pre-defined partitions? If yes: should they be treated as two primary partitions (including one or two of them can become extended partition(s) and be further subdivided into logical partitions)? Or they (or one part of each) can be treated as two logical partitions of a extended partition? Thanks! I intended to ask if there can be a primary/logical partition that are partially on both hard drives? And if there can be a logical partition on a hard drive and another logical partition on another hard, and the two logical partitions belong to the same extended partition? I guess the answers to both questions are no?

  Is is possible to define service to be active only the times while other service is failing? Consider following example: 2 hosts available: HostA (primary) and HostB (backup). Nagios service, which monitors amount of active connections to the host: gives OK when amount of connections to host 0 gives FAILURE when amount of connections to host = 0 If setup nagios service to monitor both hosts: HostA and HostB - it will give me OK for HostA (while it is primary and all connections normally goes to it) and FAIL for HostB (while it is backup and will receive no connections while HostA is alive). Can I make the nagios service for HostB somehow depend on sevice of HostA and give no failures (or maybe be inactive) up to the moment the service of HostA starts failing?

  Anyone knows how to configure the hot standby (+H) mod_proxy feature so that the takeover occurs immediately (without even one user receiving a 502) error during a shutdown? We aren't looking for real load-balancing, we just want a secondary server to take over while we shutdown the primary. The problem is that whenever the primary goes down, I'm able to slip one invalid request resulting in a 502 HTTP error reaching the end user,before the secondary actually takes over. • HTML form with single text field + preventing postback in Internet Explorer

  I have noticed a rather strange behaviour in IE. I have a HTML form with a single input text field and a submit button On Submit click I need to execute a client side JavaScript function that does the necessary. • Theme-aware XAML resources in a WP7 project

  I'm making a Windows Phone 7 application and I'm a bit confused with dark/light themes. With a panorama, you very often set a background image. The issue is it's very hard to make a picture which is right for both dark and light themes. How are we supposed to proceed? Is there a way to force a dark/light theme for a panorama? This will avoid making theme-specific panorama background pictures. Then how do I do? I found xaml files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Design. If this is a right way to proceed, how can I import them for my panorama? Or if there's no way (or if it's wrong) to force a dark/light theme: how to write conditional XAML to set correct resources? Now I have the following XAML which is fine with the dark theme: <ImageBrush x:Key="PageBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PageBackground.png" Stretch="None" /> <ImageBrush x:Key="PanoramaBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PanoramaBackground.png" Stretch="None" /> But when I use a light theme, black controls and black texts are hard to read with my dark background pictures. So I made different pictures that I can use this way: <ImageBrush x:Key="PageBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PageBackgroundLight.png" Stretch="None" /> <ImageBrush x:Key="PanoramaBackground" ImageSource="Resources/PanoramaBackgroundLight.png" Stretch="None" /> Now my issue is to make XAML conditionnal to declare the right thing depending on the current theme. I am unable to delete QuesTypes permanently because of the Foreign key relation it has with Ques Table. So , I just set the column Active=false and those Questypes then don't show on my grid wen its binded. What I want to do is be able to delete any QuesType permamnently. Now it can only be deleted if its not being used anywhere in the Ques table, right? So to delete any QuesType permanently I thot this is what I could do:- In the grid that displays QuesTypes, I have this check box for Active and a button for delete.What I thot was, when a user makes some QuesType inactive then OnCheckChanged() event will run and that will have the code to delete all the Questions in Ques table that are using that QuesTypeID. Then on the QuesType grid, that QuesType would show as Deactivated and only then can a user delete it permanently. Am I thinking correctly? Currently in my DeleteQuesType Stored Procedure what I am doing is:- Setting the Active=false and Setting QuesTye= some string like XXInactiveXX Is there any other way?

  Ok i'm having little trouble with reading pair. So i'm recieving it in "ftl". Then i was trying to 'read' it <#list counted?keys as key> <a href="#offerOrderTab"><@spring.message "someMsg"/>(${key}/${counted[key]})</a> </#list> After then i'm getting error Expecting a string, date or number here, Expression x is instead a freemarker.ext.beans.SimpleMethodModel As i suppose you dont iterate pairs (or I'm wrong?) i know its pair that contains only one key and one value but still i have to do send it that way and I thought its goin be to similar to iterating through map, in java i would use pair.first() and pair.second() but it doesn't work in ftl (ye i know it shouldnt work). I also tried to cast it to String by using ?string but it didnt work too

• MongoDB PHP EC2 Setup Configuration

  I am new to web development and server set up. I am looking for some advice or a link to a tutorial on setting up a production system up. Right now, I have a server (Ubuntu, Apache, MongoDB, and PHP). It receives a request, PHP queries Mongo, and PHP sends out the requested data. How do I make that work with more servers? I've read that you can make a cluster of a primary and two slave nodes which work as separate servers running Mongo, but do those also run PHP? Or is the primary the only one running the PHP? I have read some docs on Mongo site and a video of someone from 10gen going through it, but they are geared towards people that seem to already understand this stuff, I have no idea and need to start from a beginning stage. If anyone can help me understand where PHP (Acting as my API) lives in these clusters, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for any help!

• Lenovo Windows 8 EFI restore from image

  First time here. I have bought e530 with windows 8 and the first hour of work with it i have a problem. I have ssd with windows 7 which i want to use with my new e530. I have made a sysprep of win 7 and installed ssd to the e530. The HDD which was inside e530 i want to use as second hdd instead of my DVD Drive. I connected this HDD through usb-to-sata adapter to copy some files from ssd to the hdd. Unfortunately it didn't see the file system on the HDD (but first time i have booted to it and first boot into Windows 8) I've made some mistakes and i corrupt the filesystem on the hdd. I tried bunch of tricks to recover the GPT, but it didn't work. I have managed to recover the Lenovo_Recovery partition to my ssd using recovery tools. And now I'm stuck, with this new things to me - EFI, GPT, etc i don't how this stuff works, and i have been trying to understand this for hours - but nothing seems to work. I want to restore the Windows 8 to the hdd, so it is there alive. What i have done so far: Formated the HDD I took the PBRALL file from the Lenovo_Recovery " convert gpt create partition Primary size=1000 ID=DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001 assign letter=W format quick LABEL=WINRE_DRV create partition efi size=260 assign letter=s format quick fs=fat32 LABEL=SYSTEM_DRV create par msr size=128 create partition primary noerr assign letter=t format quick LABEL=Windows8_OS shrink desired=12197 create partition Primary ID=DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001 assign letter=q format quick LABEL=Lenovo_Recovery " it recreated the partitions copied contents of SDRIVE.zip to SYSTEM_DRV partition copied contents of WDRIVE.zip to WINRE_DRV partition Copied restored Lenovo_Recovery back to Lenovo_Recovery partition So now I have 3 system partitions: SYSTE_DRV BOOT boot.sdi EFI BOOT bootx64.efi LenovoBT.efi Lenovo ... Microsoft ... WINRE_DRV\Recovery\WindowsRE\winre.wim Lenovo_Recovery (whic contains install.wim and bunch of other things) So i put back the HDD inside the laptop and tried to boot - but nothing works. It just doesn't boot to anything - no errors - nothing at all. When I choose this HDD manually for boot - just black screen blinks and that's all - it returns back to the devices boot menu. SYSTEM_DRV is EFI partition, so I don't understand why it doesn't boot, it has files needed inside. Can anybody tell me what should be done to make it boot to recovery console or smth like that? How to restore the Windows 8 from the Lenovo_Recovery install.wim image? As I understand I have all the files where they should be, but why it doesn't work? How to troubleshoot such things? Also, if somebody has good link where EFI booting process is explained in details that would be great. Cause i still don't understand how it knows what partition to boot?

• Facebook / Offline Permission - Trying to perform an action on a set of offline users.

  Hi there, We're building an app which in part of its functionality tries to capture the number of likes associated to a particular video owned by a user. Users of the app are asked for extended off-line access and we capture the key for each user: The format is like this: 2.hg2QQuYeftuHx1R84J1oGg__.XXXX.1272394800-nnnnnn Each user has their offline / infinite key stored in a table in a DB. The object_id which we're interested in is also stored in the DB. At a later stage (offline) we try to run a batch job which reads the number of likes for each user's video. (See attached code) For some reason however, after the first iteration of the loop - which yields the likes correctly, we get a failure with the oh so familiar message: "Session key is invalid or no longer valid" Any insight would be most appreciated. • Isolated Network Set-Up

  I am looking to set up a small network for a client which would be isolated from his primary network. (I'm hoping to set-up the additional network as VMs on the primary network.) I've instructed the client to request a bunch of static ip addresses from his ISP, but I'm not sure how to proceed with setting this up. What hardware will I need and how do I go about the configuration? Heavy security is not my concern. All that's really required is that web requests from the two networks be presented to the outside world with different ip addresses.

• Generic Func<> as parameter to base method

  I might be losing the plot, but I hope someone can point me in the right direction. What am I trying to do? I'm trying to write some base methods which take Func< and Action so that these methods handle all of the exception handling etc. so its not repeated all over the place but allow the derived classes to specify what actions it wants to execute. So far this is the base class. public abstract class ServiceBase<T> { protected T Settings { get; set; } protected ServiceBase(T setting) { Settings = setting; } public void ExecAction(Action action) { try { action(); } catch (Exception exception) { throw new Exception(exception.Message); } } public TResult ExecFunc<T1, T2, T3, TResult>(Func<T1, T2, T3, TResult> function) { try { /* what goes here?! */ } catch (Exception exception) { throw new Exception(exception.Message); } } } I want to execute an Action in the following way in the derived class (this seems to work): public void Delete(string application, string key) { ExecAction(() => Settings.Delete(application, key)); } And I want to execute a Func in a similar way in the derived class but for the life of me I can't seem to workout what to put in the base class. I want to be able to call it in the following way (if possible): public object Get(string application, string key, int? expiration) { return ExecFunc(() => Settings.Get(application, key, expiration)); } Am I thinking too crazy or is this possible? • Why does applying this gradient style break my silverlight app ?

  I am having some issues with applying a gradient to a RadButton.   Is there another way to iterate through only the attributes of a custom class that are not in-built (e.g. __dict__, __module__, etc.)? For example, in this code: class Terrain: WATER = -1 GRASS = 0 HILL = 1 MOUNTAIN = 2 I can iterate through all of these attributes like this: for key, value in Terrain.__dict__.items(): print("{: <11}".format(key), " --> ", value) which outputs: MOUNTAIN --> 2 __module__ --> __main__ WATER --> -1 HILL --> 1 __dict__ --> <attribute '__dict__' of 'Terrain' objects> GRASS --> 0 __weakref__ --> <attribute '__weakref__' of 'Terrain' objects> __doc__ --> None If I just want the integer arguments (a rudimentary version of an enumerated type), I can use this: for key, value in Terrain.__dict__.items(): if type(value) is int: # type(value) == int print("{: <11}".format(key), " --> ", value) this gives the expected result: MOUNTAIN --> 2 WATER --> -1 HILL --> 1 GRASS --> 0 Is it possible to iterate through only the non-in-built attributes of a custom class independent of type, e.g. if the attributes are not all integral. Presumably I could expand the conditional to include more types, but I want to know if there are other ways I'm missing.
