• Crackling sound from right laptop speaker

  This problem lasts for several months already (first on Ubuntu 13.10, not on 12.04. I get very loud cracking/popping sound from my right Asus K56C's speaker, I searched everything but could not get rid of it. Several facts: There is no problem on Windows 8. It has nothing to do with applications running because it appears even before login screen of Ubuntu. Also same problem if I boot from Live USB. Muting sound will remove noise, but lowering volume has no effect. Inserting any headphones, removes the noise. If I disconnect power cable while there is noise, noise will always disappear, but only if there is no music playing. If I start playing music, noise again appear even with power cable disconnected. Sometimes that noise disappears for 1-4 weeks, and then again appears for no reason and lasts from several days to weeks. That noise is always the same, and I tried adding tsched=0 to /etc/pulse/default.pa. Also tried this PositionReporting fix, with no effect. I also tried disconnecting all the cables and removing all electronic devices around laptop, but it has no effect. I also tried removing Pulse Audio, didn't change anything. Would be great if someone has some real solution for this problem.

• Can I legally make a free clone of a game and use the same name? [closed]

  I gather from Is it legally possible to make a clone of the game? and How closely can a game resemble another game without legal problems that I should not try to profit from a clone if it is using the same assets, and, I presume, the same name. My question is whether it's legal to make a game like "Set" or "Catch Phrase", using the same name, and release it for free. What would I be risking if I did so -- just a take down notice, or could there be financial risk too? Edit: I guess my real question is whether the legal freedom is greater for a free game than one that is trying to make a profit. I just want a version of the game I can play remotely. Edit 2: I don't understand why this is being considered off-topic. I read the FAQ and it says it'S OK to ask questions about project management, which includes Publishing. And naming a game is a key aspect to publishing. That's what my question is about - choosing a legal name for my game with the consideration that I might post/publish it.

• Should I Open Source? [closed]

  My company recently created a full javascript, html & css Virtual Tour. Since it is html based there is no real way of securing our information/code so selling it could be flimsy. We are an extremely small company, barely on the map so I was thinking that by making this an open source project it could give us a chance to jump start our SEO by page views alone, especially if we provide documentation. Not to mention hopefully bring a community following on our blog. On the other hand though could this possibly hurt our sales as a web development company? If we are handing out this cool "plugin" we made what keeps people from making it commercial somehow? So I'm trying to weigh the options on whether I should make this Open Source or not and the pros / cons of each especially for a small business. What do you guys think about making things Open Source? How do I know if this product is the right thing to make Open Source? What are some pros and cons to going Open Source?

• Scaling sprite velocity / co-ordinatesin Android

  I'm trying to find the answer to a question that I've had for a long time, but am having trouble finding it! I hope someone can help :-) I'm trying to find information on how to scale sprite velocity / movement / co-ordinates. What I mean by this is how do I get a sprite to move at the same speed relative to the screen size / DPI so that it takes the same amount of real-time to get from one side of the screen to the other? All of the posts pertaining to sprite scaling that I can find on the various forums relate to the size of the sprite, but this part of it I'm OK with so far, it's just that when I move a sprite, it kind of gets there at different speed depending on the dpi / resolution of the device. I hope I'm making sense. This is the code I have so far, instead of using explicit amounts, like 1, I'm using something like the following: platSpeedFloat= (1 * (dpi/160)); //Use '1' so on an MDPI screen, the sprite will move by 1 physical pixel Then basically what I'm doing is something like this: (all varialble previously declared) platSpeedSave+=platSpeedFloat; //Add the platSpeedFloat value to the current platSpeedSave value platSpeed=(int) platSpeedSave; //Cast to int so it can be checked in the following statement if (platSpeed==platSpeedSave) //Check the casted int value to float value stored previoiusly {floorY=floorY-platSpeed; //If they match then change the Y value platSpeedSave=0;} //Reset Would be grateful if someone could assists - hope I'm making sense. • I want to make "stuff" on the web, is a BsC. in Computers necessary/overkill? [on hold]

  I'm 24 and have a lead role in a major news outlet in my country, with a good pay and public image in the horizon. I hold a job that was previously held by people with 15-20 years of experience and considered one of the top 5 news anchors in my country. My passion though, is computers. The web, to be precise. I was a problogger at a very young age. I hacked my way through CSS and some basic HTML and PHP. But I want to move forward - I want to CREATE not just STRUCTURE things. Giving up the present (and especially the seemingly promising future) in my current industry is hard, my friends raise their eyebrows... I'm considering a BsC. in computer Engineering - but my stats are short of getting into a good university for this discipline. Plus, I'm not the best with math - although I do exceptionally well in statistics and other numbers that are more applicable to real life. I tried learning PHP through online websites, but that just "doesn't cut it" for me. Nope. So what are my options here? if I don't want to build hardware or and deal with overly-complex algorithmic but would like, for example - to build a well functioning iPhone and iPad app, or a SaaS, a startup...do I have to go the BsC. route? I don't see any option to get an "official" education in strictly "web" concepts and languages.. Note: I'm well off financially, so I'm doing this more to be able to create stuff, rather than get a job in a corporations. Although if I land somewhere high, that might be an option. But my main concern is getting the tools.

• Software Architecture: How to divide work to a network of computers?

  Imagine a scenario as follows: Lets say you have a central computer which generates a lot of data. This data must go through some processing, which unfortunately takes longer than to generate. In order for the processing to catch up with real time, we plug in more slave computers. Further, we must take into account the possibility of slaves dropping out of the network mid-job as well as additional slaves being added. The central computer should ensure that all jobs are finished to its satisfaction, and that jobs dropped by a slave are retasked to another. The main question is: What approach should I use to achieve this? But perhaps the following would help me arrive at an answer: Is there a name or design pattern to what I am trying to do? What domain of knowledge do I need to achieve the goal of getting these computers to talk to each other? (eg. will a database, which I have some knowledge of, be enough or will this involve sockets, which I have yet to have knowledge of?) Are there any examples of such a system? The main question is a bit general so it would be good to have a starting point/reference point. Note I am assuming constraints of c++ and windows so solutions pointing in that direction would be appreciated.

• CCMoveBy values on update()

  Hope you can help me. This is my problem: I have a scheduled update, here I track the movements of my objects (sprites), I move them with CCMoveBy, and I need to constantly update the zOrder. For setting the zOrder I've made a setZOrder(), which it takes the actual position of the sprite. And here is the problem, I get all the X and Y values AFTER the object is in the target. I know I get the values after the object is in the new position because I've made a CCLog. I can read all the values from the sprite, only when it's in the new position, so everything is well sorted only when the objects are not moving. How can I get the CCMoveBy values on every tick update? (or how can I get the CCMoveBy values in "real-time"?) • Visually recognise active window

  Ubuntu 13.04 I work with two monitors, usually with lots of different windows open. I don't like to use the mouse, so swap between applications using alt-tab usually. The problem comes when I want to type something into an application. I need the active application to immediately obvious, usually so that I can tell which monitor to look at next. With default ubuntu (with appearance = ambiance), the only real visual indication of a window being active is that the header bar of the application is in a lighter font color. This is too subtle for me, so I find myself alt-tabbing and moving my mouse too much when switching applications, then clicking around with the mouse to give a particular window the focus. I want my switching to be more accurate, and for that I think I need better feedback on what window has the focus. This needs to be more obvious than it is now. I looked at the high contrast appearance, and it helps somewhat, but the inconsistency in the icon sets is far too distracting. I think what I need is a something like a bright border right around the window, or something like that, to make the active window really stand out. Or, maybe to have the non-active windows fade to the background a bit. I would appreciate tips on how others overcome this problem, to make the active window stand out visually from the other windows. Thank you!

  I am relatively new to unit testing and have a query about what/how I should be testing a certain method. For the following (psudo-c#) method I have created (not a real-life example) what would you test for? Initially, my thoughts would be to test the output with variations on the dictionary of form fields, e.g. valid, invalid, missing values. However I also wonder how you would test to make sure the object values have been changed to the correct value and that the correct email message was attempted to be sent (obviously both services could/would be mocked). • How to Boot or "enter" into ubnutu 11.04 (Natty Narwhall) on PS3 after installing it?

  After failing to install ubuntu 11.04 Desktop version (burned on a dvd, because iso's file size was 726 Mb), in tried the alternate version (about 686 Mb) which i burned into a CD. During the installation process, i manually partitioned the hard drive using ext3. After the installation, the CD ejects itself and i hit "continue". In the k boot prompt i hit "enter" on my the keyboard. I see i welcome message in a dark background (a kind of full screen terminal/console called CLI i think) and was asked to enter my user name and password. After that, instead of booting into the beautiful desktop of Ubuntu, i saw this: ubuntu@my_name$ It was like a line of command i think, where you can use "sudo" commands. It is called a non-graphic mode i think. My my REAL problem is to enter Ubuntu 11.04 with the chocolate-colored background and the African music drum. I tried many commands to boot into the graphic mode of the system such as Ctr+Alt+F7 but nothing happened. In this case, i just saw numbers showing available blocks. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. I also tried startx and sudo startx without result. I DO bought a PS3 BOTH for gaming and for Ubuntu because i can't afford buying a PC. Please help me with my trouble dear Ubuntu 11.04 users. • How do I get mouse x / y of the world plane in Unity?

  I am trying to make a tiled landscape. The terrain itself is not made from tiles but the world has a grid which I define. I would like to place boxes/rectangles which snap to this grid, at runtime, but in order for me to do that I must get a projection from the user screen to the real-world coordinates. I have tried various examples using the Ray class but nothing worked. It compiles and outputs a constant value no matter where I put the mouse. I have tried to add some tiles and try to detect them but no luck. I also tried with one plane as big as my world but still no luck. I am using C# but even a JS version would be helpful. This technique involves calculating which tile the mouse is under by the x and y positions. Perhaps detecting which tile itself is being pointed to would be a simpler task, at which point I can just retrieve its i/j properties.   I am attempting to modify an application with the following characteristics: Written in C#.net Using Visual Studio 2010 The application uses a Master sheet to maintain commonality The Master sheet has the following: <%@ Master Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="mysheet.master.cs" Inherits="master_mysheet" %> Now, currently, the master sheet has an include file that brings in a common footer: #include file="inc/my-footer.inc" Here's what I want to do: I would like to modify the master sheet to be able to read in a footer based on the value contained in a session variable... i.e. (not real code, but just something to give an idea of what I want) if session("x") = "a" then #include file="inc/my-footer1.inc" else #include file="inc/my-footer2.inc" My first instinct was to go with some vbscript: <script type="text/vbscript" language="vbscript"> document.write("vbscript example.") </script> However, it doesn't run the vbscript code automatically on page load. Does anyone know: - The syntax I need to actually get this to work? i.e. to get the vbscript to run automatically on page load, AND to do the page include? - Or, is there a better way to go about this? • Three Ubuntu 12.04 + Xfce problems

  sorry to bother you, but I wanted to set up a minimal Ubuntu 12.04 with minimal Xfce and probably due to my unawareness of several important things, not everything is working properly. -Sometimes when I shutdown I get error message from iwlwifi: It starts with a time out error about sending a power table and after several other errors it says "On demand firmware reload and "Unable to initialize device". And the shutdown stops there so I can only use hard shutdown. -Also when I boot, I often boot to a black screen, but pressing ctrl+alt+f1 gets me to the login prompt (I do not use a login manager). But then I sometimes cannot type. Seems probably more like a X server problem. When it works I only see the Plymouth splash for a very short time or sometimes not at all. -And the last problem is the most annoying one: Frequently Xfce freezes completely. I think ctrl+alt+f1 works sometimes, but other times I also have to use hard shutdown. When it freezes the cpu fan gets louder. I've been using Xbuntu for a while before, but with "real" Linux I am more a beginner, so I hope you forgive my questions Thanks

• How can I get better at explaining complex software processes to developers?

  I'm really struggling with my software specs. I am not a professional programmer but enjoy doing it for fun and made some software that I want to sell later but I'm not happy with the code quality. So I wanted to hire a real developer to rewrite my software in a more professional way so it will be maintainable by other developers in the future. I read and found some sample specs and made my own by applying their structure to my document and wanted to get my developer friend to read it and give me advice. After an hour and a half he understood exactly what I was trying to do and how I did it(my algorithms,stack,etc.). How can I get better at explaining things to developers? I add many details and explanations for everything(including working code) but I'm unsure the best way I can learn to pass detailed domain knowledge(my software applies big data, machine learning, graph theory to finance). My end goal is to get them to understand as much as possible from the document and then ask anything they do not understand, but right now it seems they need to extract alot of information from me. How can I get better at communicating domain knowledge to developers?

• When should I decline to make a requested change?

  I work on the software side of a company that provides custom hardware with software running on top of it. Often times the hardware is not engineered well. In those cases, I am often asked first to troubleshoot the problem - of course the symptom is always "your software crashed" or something along those lines. Just recently we had another one of these incidents where power on a USB line is not reliable, and it causes a USB device to fail. This causes a usability problem in one of our applications. I have been asked by upper management to handle this better - continually monitor the USB device, and if it disappears, then reboot, or try to reset it. Doing either of these is not guaranteed to fix anything. Ultimately, the real fix is to correct the reliability of the device from the hardware side. I could improve performance, but not to 100%, and of course I would be using my already limited time to bloat code and add yet another device monitoring thread. So with all that said, how do I make a good decision about when to say that this needs to be a hardware fix, and only a hardware fix? Can I approach this quantitatively, and come up with some sort of definitive yes/no test? I'm sure its not that easy.

• MATLAB: What is an appropriate Data Structure for a Matrix with Random Variable Entries?

  I'm working in an area that is related to simulation and trying to design a data structure that can include random variables within matrices. I am currently coding in MATLAB. To motivate this let me say I have the following matrix: [a b; c d] I want to find a data structure that will allow for a, b, c, d to be either real numbers or random variables. As an example, let's say that a = 1, b = -1, c = 2 but let d be a normally distributed random variable with mean 20 and SD 40. The data structure that I have in mind will give no value to d. However, I also want to be able to design a function that can take in the structure, simulate an uniform(0,1), obtain a value for d using an inverse CDF and then spit out an actual matrix. I have several ideas to do this (all related to the MATLAB icdf function) but would like to know how more experienced programmers would do it. In this application, it's important that the structure is as "lean" as possible since I will be working with very very large matrices and memory will be an issue.

• What is the correct way to code incoming links for SEO?

  Our site is giving out 'badges' to our authors. They can post these on their personal blogs and they will serve as incoming links to our site. We want to give out the best possible code for SEO without doing anything that would get us flagged. I would like to know what you're thoughts are on the following snippet of code and if anyone has any DEFINITE advice on dos and donts with it. Also, let me know if any of it is redundant or not worth it for SEO purposes. I've kept the css inline since some of the writers would not have access to add link to external CSS. • If you had to go back and re-learn your skill set, how would you do it?

  My younger brother is looking to start programming. He's 14, and technically-inclined, but no real experience programming. He's looking to me for guidance, and I don't feel as if my experience is enough, so I figured I'd ask here. He's more interested in web programming, but also has an interest in desktop/mobile/server applications. What would be a good learning path for him to take? I'm going to buy him a bunch of books for Christmas to get him started; the question is, what should he learn, and in which order? The way I see it, he needs to learn theory and code. I'd like to start him off with Python or Ruby or PHP. If he wants to get in to web, he's also going to need to learn HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. Out of those three domains (Languages, Theory, Markup/Etc.), what is the best order do you think to learn in? Also, am I missing anything? Thanks!

• Is it normal for GRUB to take some time (15+s) after I choose what to boot?

  I had been planning to change the background of my bootloader for a while, and finally got to it. Now the black screen I get for quite some time was made clear. It is still GRUB, because the background image stays, while all of the text is gone. Then it just simply shows the Lubuntu loading screen for, usually, not more than 3 seconds. I run Lubuntu 12.10. My question is, is this normal behaviour or is something going wrong, causing GRUB to take longer?   NTT DOCOMO is the largest mobile operator in Japan, and serves over 13 million smartphone customers. Due to their growing data processing and scalability needs, they turned to Oracle's Cloud Application Foundation products for an integral soultion. At Oracle OpenWorld 2012, we first showcased NTT DOCOMO as a customer who was utilizing Oracle Coherence to process mobile data at a rate of 700,000 events per second (and then using Hadoop for distributed processing of big data). Overall, this Led to a 50% cost reduction due to the ultra-high velocity traffic processing of their customers' events. Recently, on October 7th, 2013, Oracle and NTT DOCOMO were proud to again announce a partnership around another key component of Oracle CAF: WebLogic Server. WebLogic was recently deployed as the application platform of choice to run DOCOMO's mission-critical data system ALADIN, which connects nationwide shops and information centers. • My computer is broken after recent update attempt to 14.04

  So it all started on a day much like today, because it is today but that's not the point, when I got a notification telling me I haven't upgraded to 14.04. Not due to lack of trying, however. It offered to upgrade me itself. Now keep in mind, I've tried very hard to upgrade my is from 12.04 to 14.04. Many times, I believe, due to tinkering where there shouldn't be tinkering, my BIOS are messed up. So upgrading is essentially impossible, but I wasn't about to stop it from updating for me, thinking it didn't have too much to do with BIOS as it doesn't reboot until after. So I let it go about its business and some time later I look back at it, and my unity sidebar is gone, and anytime there's text on screen it shows as those box things. The real bottom line is that I want to know my options. All of them. I would love to be able to keep the stuff on my hard drive so a hard drive swap may be an option if you guys say that would work. I just need my computer back. Let me know if I left anything out. Peace! B^)

  Why does Ubuntu 12.10 Beta2 insist on commiting changes to the partition table even as no real changes has been done? This is a show stopper for me as I'm installing without a CD/DVD ROM. This is how I go about it. I downloaded the iso image and extracted vmlinuz and initrd.lz to the same folder I keep the iso image. Configured grub (0.9x) to boot /ubuntu/vmlinuz with the iso image like this: title ubuntu live-cd kernel /ubuntu/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu/ubuntu-12.10-beta2-desktop-i386.iso ro quiet splash initrd /ubuntu/initrd.lz boot This works well and I get a running livecd session. The iso image is mounted on /isomedia (or something similar). The spare HD space where I want to install Ubuntu is in the logical area (at the wery end of the disk). I have tried both to use the space as empty and preformated with ext4. After selecting the partition and selecting "use as ext4" and selecting a mountpoint (/) I get the message: "The installer needs to commit changes to partition tables, but cannot do so because partitions on the following mount points could not be unmounted" "/isomedia" (or something similar). Is this a "feature" of the installer? To insist that everything is unmounted even if no changes is nescesary (as fare as I understand). It's probably a safety feature but is it needed? I have cahnged layouts with parted and gparted (at the end of the disk) for years without any failures. I understand that booting the iso image like this is not the common way. But it is just such a beautifull way of doing it when you hav a running system and want to play with another. Any one had any success installing Ubuntu (12.10 beta2 ) like this? Best regards Uten

• Positioned element adding to total div height [migrated]

  I have a 800 x 600 rotatable image with forward and back buttons repositioned to the sides. The height of the div is suppose to be 600px, but the actual height of the div was pushed to 690, including the height of the button image. And the div was blocking a row of clickable menu on top. So I made the div height to 518px and moved top -75px to get the real dimension I want. But I feel dirty doing this... Is there a correct way to do this? Or is this workaround more or less correct? Below is the code.
