  • How to register a domain for a beginner?

    I've never registered a .com , .net like domain before, and I would like to do some research before doing so. I currently have a ruby on rails app running Heroku. Is there anything special I have to do prior to registering domain on my ruby on rails app at all? Or is it as easy as just inserting my current Heroku address to mask it with another .com or .net name? Is there some special features I should look for registering domain? Or is it typical for domain seller to just sell domain names only? Any recommendations on sellers? Thank you.

  • What do you think about gems and eggs? Alternatives?

    I've read recently some criticism (see 1, 2, 3) about the packaging distribution system of two popular programming languages: Ruby gems and Python eggs. The most important argument stated against them is that they replace the system package manager (in case there is one, as in every Linux distribution), which makes eggs and gems difficult to track, code difficult to patch, and so on. Are actually eggs and gems right? In case not, are there any alternatives to distributing Python or Ruby modules? Should developers focus on taking advantage of package manager (apt-get, pacman, ...) capabilities?

  • How do I share my jQuery plugin with the world?

    I made a plugin for jQuery, which I think is quite useful. It combines an animated colours plugin with an easings plugin, and adds a completely new feature of being able to refer to colours numerically (more useful in hex notation, so 0xff00cc for example) and therefore manipulate them mathematically more easily. I created a repository on github, and it sits there, nobody looks at it. Mostly, I would like people to look at it, use it, and improve it, so I can use the improvements and so on. I think this idea of numerically manipulating colors could be interesting. It makes it easy to change the hue without changing the saturation for example. Combined with animated colors, I think something interesting could be done, but I don't know what exactly. How do I let people know it (or any other project) is there..? I was going to post it on http://plugins.jquery.com which is currently down. Are there any other outlets for this kind of code?

  • Cloud proxying service

    I have an app that mashes up images from Bing image search, it's hosted on Heroku written in rails. The app is client side in javascript, so the mashup is done on an html5 canvas - this means though that if I fetch the images direct from the Bing server, the canvas gets dirty and I can't save it. As a quick work around, i have set up a route on my rails app that simply proxies the request to Bing and passes the result back through. Obviously this is a very poor performance solution and will eat up my dynos very quickly. Can anyone suggest a more suitable option? At the moment I'm thinking maybe Amazon EC2 with apache mod_rewrite rules would be better performing and more cost effective. Is there a cloud service (or an app I could deploy to a cloud service) that would be more appropriate for proxying requests for me so that my javascript can fetch the images without dirtying the canvas?

  • Sending USR2 to mongrel_rails sometimes results in an “Address already in use” on the restart

    We have a rolling-restart mode for our mongrel cluster that sends a USR2 signal to each running process. This works great, most of the time.   • Upgrading Redmine, activerecord-mysql2-adapter not recognized

    For upgrading Redmine from 1.0.1 to 2.1.2, I need to execute the command: rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=production However, doing so produces the following error: rake aborted! Please install the mysql2 adapter: gem install activerecord-mysql2-adapter (mysql2 is not part of the bundle. Add it to Gemfile.) I have ran gem install activerecord-mysql2-adapter, but I still get the same error when I try to run the rake ... command.   • Configure Apache + Passenger to serve static files from different directory

    I'm trying to setup Apache and Passenger to serve a Rails app. However, I also need it to serve static files from a directory other than /public and give precedence to these static files over anything in the Rails app. The Rails app is in /home/user/apps/testapp and the static files in /home/user/public_html. For various reasons the static files cannot simply be moved to the Rails public folder. Also note that the root http://domain.com/ should be served by the index.html file in the public_html folder. Here is the config I'm using: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName domain.com DocumentRoot /home/user/apps/testapp/public RewriteEngine On RewriteCond /home/user/public_html/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f RewriteCond /home/user/public_html/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /home/user/public_html/$1 [L] </VirtualHost> This serves the Rails application fine but gives 404 for any static content from public_html. I have also tried a configuration that uses DocumentRoot /home/user/public_html but this doesn't serve the Rails app at all, presumably because Passenger doesn't know to process the request. Interestingly, if I change the conditions to !-f and !-d and the rewrite rule to redirecto to another domain, it works as expected (e.g. http://domain.com/doesnt_exist gets redirected to http://otherdomain.com/doesnt_exist) How can I configure Apache to serve static files like this, but allow all other requests to continue to Passenger?

How do I pass ruby.websiteroot.com to websiteroot.com:8000? What's the best way for me to route a subdomain for ruby dev?? I'd switch to nginx completely if it weren't for all my php sites--seems like it's easier to just proxy for ruby. Advice? The file was loaded fine, and I was able to read the contents just fine in this second page. I am trying to show the number of lines in the .csv file in this second page. My controller (semi-pseudocode): class UpcsvController < ApplicationController def index end def create file = params[:upcsv][:filename] ... #params[:upcsv][:file_length] = file.length # Show number of lines in the file #params[:upcsv][:file_length] = file.size ... end end Both file.length and file.size returns '91' when my file only contains 7 lines. From the Rails documentation that I read, once the Submit button is clicked, Rails creates a temp file of the uploaded file, and the params[:upcsv][:filename] contains the contents of the temp/uploaded file and not the path to the file. And I don't know how to extract the number of lines in my original file. What is the correct way to get the number of lines in the file?     Hello, I would like to know how to explicitly set a timeout for the Ruby DBI ODBC driver, when connecting to SQL Server. I would like long running queries to simply timeout and cancel themselves, saving further server resources and Rails processes. This was happening while we were using the ADO based Ruby driver, but now that we've switched to DBD::ODBC we are no longer experiencing timeouts. I've looked around but cannot find out how to set the query timeout value. I've tried explicitly setting some values in the driver, and specifying both Timeout and ConnectionTimeout and Connect Timeout in the DSN configuration for the connection. No luck.     Given a URL, I would like to be able to render the returned HTML to know width and height for each div, fonts' size for each piece of text, color of each element, position of each element on screen, etc. A possible approach could be traversing the DOM tree with Hpricot and checking CSS style by parsing the associated stylesheet using css_parser gem. But this would not consider default styles, inheritance, floats, etc. In Java there's Cobra, a Java Web Renderer, which is able to render a web page and query attributes like width, font size, etc. for each fragment. I could use Cobra with JRuby or similar solutions, but prefer a Ruby native tool. Is there any library like this for Ruby?
