• Is DHCP required on a Win2003 secondary DNS server?

  We have a secondary DNS server and we've been noticing that the DNS.exe process is getting rather large. (Like, rebooting the server large) I read something somewhere that 2k3 has two relevant memory leak issues, one is the DNS (supposedly fixed in 2007), and another for DHCP. DHCP is running on this server, but I don't see why. Hence my question. Is the DHCP service required for (secondary) DNS to function? Server has: 24 cores (X5650), 8GB RAM

• Mutli-processor workstation as a workstation/server

  I work in a research institute and a number of programs we use are computationally intensive (I actually wrote one of them). Right now we have one computer that is dedicated for one of these programs (with local accounts only, as in users physically sitting in front of that pc) and the other programs are run on individual workstations assigned to people. I have been looking around to common brands such as Dell and HP, for a some sort of a small/medium scale server, which can be used as a workhorse by sending tasks remotely. It appears as if there is nothing in between workstations with one 6-core processor and a bunch of extras (like fancy graphics etc) and rack mount servers with ridiculous amount of RAM and HDD expansion capabilities but still relatively little number of processors/cores. I wonder if what I am looking for is such a small niche product? Are there other solutions that I might not be aware of? Does anyone know of a multi proc- multi-core workstation/server that is still within the reasonable

  I've got quite simple question actually. How green, low-power and efficient x86 home server can I build using consumer parts with rather constrained budget. After looking through some Google hits I've found out that system based on dual-core atom, some modest mITX board (gigabit lan, integrated audio and gfx etc), one RAM module and one 'green' WD HDD, powered by picoITX PSU uses about 30W at idle up to 40 at load. Can you get lower (or how much lower) then that? Maybe some VIA nano chips, or single core atom? My home server would take care of some back-upping mixed with little ftp/http traffic.

• OpenVPN - Ubunut 10.04 - Client Can't Connect to Server - Linux Route Add Command Failed

  I suppose this could be asked on Server Fault as well, but it is specific to the client so I thought I'd start here. I have keys for a OpenVPN server already in place. I have used these keys to connect already, but using a Windows XP machine. • Problems setting up home web server

  Has anyone been able to get a server working with the router smcwbr14t-g? Although I have been able to get Apache set up correctly and my website works on the internal IP 192.168.2.101, I've been running into a dead end when trying to get it to show up on my external IP. In my router, there is no option for port forwarding, but there are options for a 'virtual server'. Following the manual, I have it set up like this: http://imgur.com/zrcV7.png I also disabled the firewall. I configured Apache to listen to ports 80, 81, and 443, none of which solved the problem. However, the IP's 192.168.2.101:443 and :81 load fine. The problem is that I still cannot load the web site from my external IP, either from my computer or outside.

  Upon starting Windows Server 2008 R2 I get this error message: Event ID 11 Disk The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\DR3. There are also also 3 more similar messages for Harddisk 2, 4, and 5, but not zero or 1. Checking the event viewer reveals it's been going on for 3 months. I ran chkdsk - no bad sectors. Any advice on the cause, better still, a solution?

• Ideas for home media server with Dell laptop?

  Hi guys, We have an old Dell Inspiron laptop we don't use anymore and would look to turn it onto a media/backup server for music/pictures - and maybe documents/code. The laptop only has 40Gb of HD space but we can hook to it a USB external HD with an additional 80Gb. This is a very general question: - What OS should I put on it (more like, what flavor of Linux)? - What media/backup server software should I install on top of that? - How would you go about backing up to it? I need to back up computers on the same LAN, some have Windows, some OS X, some Linux. If you could point me to an all-in-one solution with a nice tutorial for non-sysadmin folks it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

• IIS Seems to Forward Domain/IP to Domain Controller

  We have a server (Server 1) with Win 2008 that is accessible by RDP and also is set as the primary DNS IP for a domain (example.com). This server is on the same network as an SBS 2008 server (Server 2) which is the domain controller and internal Dns server. Web requests going to example.com with IP of Server 1 are being passed to Server 2 and served up by IIS from Server 2. What causes this to happen? Is there a safe way to have Server 1 IIS handle the web requests which was our expected outcome? Example: DNS entry on ISP: example.com = 111.111.111.111 Server 1 = 111.111.111.111 Server 2 = 111.111.111.112 Web user goes to example.com in browser, and the page is actually returned from 111.111.111.112?

  Using a VM I installed Windows 2008 Server x64 and as the image below shows, added the IIS Role full image and assigned all role features of IIS full image But if I have an ASP.NET (aspx) page that does (C#) Session["test-session"] = "A"; and read in other page I always get nothing! NOTE: I do have an entire ASP.NET web application, the example above is to be succinct and explicit on what is the problem I'm facing. • Best way to keep configuration for server reinstallation?

  I have a server at home running Ubuntu 12.04 which has grown messy over the years. I have fiddled with various packages, desktop environments (for VNC) etc. and I would like to reinstall it to start again, and have better control over what goes into the box. But I want to keep much of the configurations after reinstallation, like LVM configuration, apache2, samba, etc etc. There would ideally exist a program which could analyze /etc, installed packages and such, store the information, and selectively put it back into the new installation. I am even considering installing Ubuntu server on a virtual machine, just to be able to compare the contents of /etc with a clean installation, and even perform a migration to the virtual machine first, to verify that the transfer process works. How do one go about performing this kind of reinstallation? Have anyone seen any resources on the net on the topic?

I've followed these instructions: http://wiki.mediatemple.net/w/%28dv%29_4.0:Install_GIT It seems to have "installed", as there are a boat load of files in the following directory: /root/git-2012-06-06 However, when I perform any git command in the server: git: command not found My assumption is that something, somewhere isn't configured properly, but I have no idea where to start.   Tengo un servidor con 8GB de RAM de 32 bits, instale windows server 2003 enterprise y sql server 2005 enterprise, el Sistema Operativo reconoce los 8GB, pero el Sql Server solo usaba 1.6 GB de memoria, entonces agregue al boot.ini el parametro /PAE y en Sql Server le habilite AWE de 1GB a 5GB, despues de reiniciar el servidor el Sistema que usa la BD estaba mas rapido mejoro bastante, pero en memoria el Sql Server solo usa 100 MB, veo la cantidad de memoria usada en el Administrador de Tareas de Windows, y no se si esta funcionando AWE o que sucedio?   Hello, I use netcat to run a simple server like this: while true; do nc -l -p 2468 -e ./my_exe; done This way, anyone is able to connect to my host on port 2468 and talk with "my_exe". Unfortunately, if someone else wants to connect during an open session, it would get a "Connection refused" error, because netcat is no longer in listening until the next "while" loop. Is there a way to make netcat behave like a multithread server, i.e. always in listening for incoming connections? If not, are there some workarounds for this? Thank you all!

• Using TrueCrypt with File Replication on Windows Server

  We have a few folders that are set to replicate to a DR file server off-site. One of these folders contains a file that is a TrueCrypt volume container. When this file is mounted in TrueCrypt, the file won't replicate (fair enough!). I'm looking at alternatives to improve this situation. One solution I currently have is to have a scheduled task to unmount the volume and then every morning as the volume is needed, have someone mount it. This is a pain slightly because the password is known by a few people (I'm not one and neither are my colleagues who would be performing the mounting operation) so we'd need to continually get them to come over and type it in. The other I had was to have one TrueCrypt container on each server and replicate the contents when they are mounted. I wasn't able to get TrueCrypt to see the mounted volume so I guess this is a no go. Any other solutions I have missed or a fix for the above?

• How to prevent the "other user" from appearing on the logon screen of a server?

  When I want to log into a server console (Server 2008 R2), I click Ctrl+Alt+Del and get "Other User" that I need to click before I get the log in box to add my credentials. This wouldnt be so bad, but I want to use this server as a Citrix server and so far every user that tries to connect has to click other user before they can add thier own credentials.. Has anyone got any ideas on ewhat I can do to get this to go straight to the username and password without the extra click?

• Media center consumes all available memory when attempting to play music off of a server

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and recently, when i try to play a song off of my Twonky Media Server/Windows Media Connect (based on an HP WHS with an Atom), it plays choppily. When i open Resource Monitor, it shows that after ordering the music to play, memory usage rapidly spikes to consume most, if not all, of the available memory on my system (excluding a couple hundred megabytes in standby). Why does it do this and is there anything i can do to stop it? Edit: it happens when I attempt to browse the server's music, not just when i play music. Edit 2: the "ehshell" process is what consumes the memory, appears to me something specific to media center. Moreover, the ehshell process doesn't die in this case. Edit 3: It only happens when browsing my Twonky library, and not my Windows Media Connect.

  Since changing the motherboard in my Windows home server it has been switching itself on every night to perform a scheduled backup. I don't want this to happen though, I want to switch the server on using Wake on lan, but I want to manually perform backups if/when required. I know I can disable backups of each computer, and the machine wont turn on, but I want to allow manually triggered backups, or automatic backups if the homeserver is on, but if its in sleep mode, I wish it to stay in that state unless I wake it. How can this be achieved?

• Windows 7: Server disappearing from Network window

  I am running a small (three computer) network on a Windows Server 2003 domain. All of the computers were just upgraded to Windows 7. Since the upgrade, the icon for the domain server periodically disappears from the Network window on all three computers. It doesn't happen at the same time on all computers--the icon typically disappears from one machine, but not the others. And it's not always the same computer. The network connection is still there--I can type \\myserver and get to the network shares. It's simply the icon that's disappearing. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions for a fix? • SQL Server Configuration Manager menu won't show up

  I'm running a Windows 8 VM on a MacBook using Parallels Desktop 9. On this Windows VM, I have a SQL Server instance running perfectly. However, when I launch SQL Server Configuration Manager, and I want to enable an IP configuration, the Enable menu options are invisible : Here is a screenshot : http://i.imgur.com/PY7qGup.png (I don't have enough reputation to display the image inline) When I click the arrow, a contextual menu should appear with 2 choices "Yes" or "No". Instead, a tiny contextual menu appears, but it's empty. I tried using my keyboard tab/space/arrows keys without success. Has anyone faced/solved the same problem ?
