• SQL SERVER – Solution – Puzzle – Statistics are not Updated but are Created Once

- by pinaldave
Earlier I asked puzzle why statistics are not updated. Read the complete details over here: Statistics are not Updated but are Created Once In the question I have demonstrated even though statistics should have been updated after lots of insert in the table are not updated.(Read the details SQL SERVER – When are Statistics Updated – What triggers Statistics to Update) In this example I have created following situation: Create Table Insert 1000 Records Check the Statistics Now insert 10 times more 10,000 indexes Check the Statistics – it will be NOT updated Auto Update Statistics and Auto Create Statistics for database is TRUE Now I have requested two things in the example 1) Why this is happening? 2) How to fix this issue? I have many answers – here is the how I fixed it which has resolved the issue for me. NOTE: There are multiple answers to this problem and I will do my best to list all. Solution: Create nonclustered Index on column City Here is the working example for the same. Let us understand this script and there is added explanation at the end. -- Execution Plans Difference -- Estimated Execution Plan Vs Actual Execution Plan -- Create Sample Database CREATE DATABASE SampleDB GO USE SampleDB GO -- Create Table CREATE TABLE ExecTable (ID INT, FirstName VARCHAR(100), LastName VARCHAR(100), City VARCHAR(100)) GO CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_ExecTable1 ON ExecTable (City); GO -- Insert One Thousand Records -- INSERT 1 INSERT INTO ExecTable (ID,FirstName,LastName,City) SELECT TOP 1000 ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name) RowID, 'Bob', CASE WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%2 = 1 THEN 'Smith' ELSE 'Brown' END, CASE WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 1 THEN 'New York' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 5 THEN 'San Marino' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 3 THEN 'Los Angeles' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 7 THEN 'La Cinega' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 13 THEN 'San Diego' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 17 THEN 'Las Vegas' ELSE 'Houston' END FROM sys.all_objects a CROSS JOIN sys.all_objects b GO -- Display statistics of the table sp_helpstats N'ExecTable', 'ALL' GO -- Select Statement SELECT FirstName, LastName, City FROM ExecTable WHERE City = 'New York' GO -- Display statistics of the table sp_helpstats N'ExecTable', 'ALL' GO -- Replace your Statistics over here DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS('ExecTable', IX_ExecTable1); GO -------------------------------------------------------------- -- Round 2 -- Insert One Thousand Records -- INSERT 2 INSERT INTO ExecTable (ID,FirstName,LastName,City) SELECT TOP 1000 ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name) RowID, 'Bob', CASE WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%2 = 1 THEN 'Smith' ELSE 'Brown' END, CASE WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 1 THEN 'New York' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 5 THEN 'San Marino' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 3 THEN 'Los Angeles' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 7 THEN 'La Cinega' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 13 THEN 'San Diego' WHEN ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY a.name)%20 = 17 THEN 'Las Vegas' ELSE 'Houston' END FROM sys.all_objects a CROSS JOIN sys.all_objects b GO -- Select Statement SELECT FirstName, LastName, City FROM ExecTable WHERE City = 'New York' GO -- Display statistics of the table sp_helpstats N'ExecTable', 'ALL' GO -- Replace your Statistics over here DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS('ExecTable', IX_ExecTable1); GO -- Clean up Database DROP TABLE ExecTable GO When I created non clustered index on the column city, it also created statistics on the same column with same name as index. When we populate the data in the column the index is update – resulting execution plan to be invalided – this leads to the statistics to be updated in next execution of SELECT. This behavior does not happen on Heap or column where index is auto created. If you explicitly update the index, often you can see the statistics are updated as well. You can see this is for sure happening if you follow the tell of John Sansom. John Sansom‘s suggestion: That was fun! Although the column statistics are invalidated by the time the second select statement is executed, the query is not compiled/recompiled but instead the existing query plan is reused. It is the “next” compiled query against the column statistics that will see that they are out of date and will then in turn instantiate the action of updating statistics. You can see this in action by forcing the second statement to recompile. SELECT FirstName, LastName, City FROM ExecTable WHERE City = ‘New York’ option(RECOMPILE) GO Kevin Cross also have another suggestion: I agree with John. It is reusing the Execution Plan. Aside from OPTION(RECOMPILE), clearing the Execution Plan Cache before the subsequent tests will also work. i.e., run this before round 2: ————————————————————– – Clear execution plan cache before next test DBCC FREEPROCCACHE WITH NO_INFOMSGS; ————————————————————– Nice puzzle! Kevin As this was puzzle John and Kevin both got the correct answer, there was no condition for answer to be part of best practices. I know John and he is finest DBA around – his tremendous knowledge has always impressed me. John and Kevin both will agree that clearing cache either using DBCC FREEPROCCACHE and recompiling each query every time is for sure not good advice on production server. It is correct answer but not best practice. By the way, if you have better solution or have better suggestion please advise. I am open to change my answer and publish further improvement to this solution. On very separate note, I like to have clustered index on my Primary Key, which I have not mentioned here as it is out of the scope of this puzzle. • XNA Notes 004

- by George Clingerman
The XNA community has been crazy busy again. It always make me fee like such a slacker collecting all of these notes as I see the tremendous output from people all over the world and it’s incredible and humbling. There are some amazingly skilled people working with XNA. On another not, I’m going to take a minute to get on my soapbox and say, if you are developing ANYTHING and are not using some sort of source/revision control, START IMMEDIATELY. This applies to teams of one. Projects for fun. And “I back up my hard drive” or “I use dropbox!” does NOT count as using source control. You’ll be doing yourself a HUGE favor if you find one, learn to use it and integrate it into your everyday workflow. I personally use Subversion. It’s hosted offsite at xp.dev.com and I use TortoiseSVN as my front end to interface with the repository. It’s simple and easy to use and has saved me from myself so many time. Honestly, get setup with some type of source control immediately. If you don’t understand how, grab another developer that does and have them walk you through setup and the basics of using it. Ok, I’m done. • SQL SERVER – Integration Services Balanced Data Distributor – SSIS Balanced Data Distributor

- by pinaldave
Microsoft SSIS Balanced Data Distributor (BDD) is a new SSIS transform. This transform takes a single input and distributes the incoming rows to one or more outputs uniformly via multithreading. The transform takes one pipeline buffer worth of rows at a time and moves it to the next output in a round robin fashion. It’s balanced and synchronous so if one of the downstream transforms or destinations is slower than the others, the rest of the pipeline will stall so this transform works best if all of the outputs have identical transforms and destinations. • Ever helpful Windows…

- by John Breakwell
I’m doing some troubleshooting for a relative and asked them to send me a zipped copy of their registry which they dutifully did. When I tried to extract the registry file, though, Windows jumped in the way and said “No”. This made sense as registry files are dangerous things in the hands of the ignorant. So I clicked the link to see if it would tell me how to get at the reg file but found the result less than helpful. So off to the Internet and found an excellent answer on how to get round this: Now on to the much harder part of fixing the original problems.

• Monitoring Database disk space

- by Michael Freidgeim
An article Data files: To Autogrow Or Not To Autogrow? recommends NOT to rely on auto-grow, because it causing delays in unplanned times. We should mtonitor database files(both data and log), and if they close to max capacity, manually increase the size. However it doesn't give references, how to monitor the free space inside databases. I've tried to look how to do it. It can be done manually using execute sp_spaceused for the database in question or sp_SOS (can be downloaded from http://searchsqlserver.techtarget.com/tip/Find-size-of-SQL-Server-tables-and-other-objects-with-stored-procedure)Alternatively you can run SQL commands as suggested in Http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=82359 by Michael Valentine Jonesselect [FREE_SPACE_MB] = convert(decimal(12,2),round((a.size-fileproperty(a.name,'SpaceUsed'))/128.000,2)) from dbo.sysfiles aMore useful article Monitor database file sizes with SQL Server Jobs describes how to setup monitoring Finally I found the excellent articleManaging Database Data Usage With Custom Space Alerts, that can be followed even support personnel without much DBA experience.

• Flood fill algorithm for Game of Go

- by Jackson Borghi
I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to make captured stones disappear. I've read everywhere that I should use the flood fill algorithm, but I haven't had any luck with that so far. Any help would be amazing! Here is my code: package Go; import static java.lang.Math.*; import static stdlib.StdDraw.*; import java.awt.Color; public class Go2 { public static Color opposite(Color player) { if (player == WHITE) { return BLACK; } return WHITE; } public static void drawGame(Color[][] board) { Color[][][] unit = new Color[400][19][19]; for (int h = 0; h < 400; h++) { for (int x = 0; x < 19; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < 19; y++) { unit[h][x][y] = YELLOW; } } } setXscale(0, 19); setYscale(0, 19); clear(YELLOW); setPenColor(BLACK); line(0, 0, 0, 19); line(19, 19, 19, 0); line(0, 19, 19, 19); line(0, 0, 19, 0); for (double i = 0; i < 19; i++) { line(0.0, i, 19, i); line(i, 0.0, i, 19); } for (int x = 0; x < 19; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < 19; y++) { if (board[x][y] != YELLOW) { setPenColor(board[x][y]); filledCircle(x, y, 0.47); setPenColor(GRAY); circle(x, y, 0.47); } } } int h = 0; } public static void main(String[] args) { int px; int py; Color[][] temp = new Color[19][19]; Color[][] board = new Color[19][19]; Color player = WHITE; for (int i = 0; i < 19; i++) { for (int h = 0; h < 19; h++) { board[i][h] = YELLOW; temp[i][h] = YELLOW; } } while (true) { drawGame(board); while (!mousePressed()) { } px = (int) round(mouseX()); py = (int) round(mouseY()); board[px][py] = player; while (mousePressed()) { } floodFill(px, py, player, board, temp); System.out.print("XXXXX = "+ temp[px][py]); if (checkTemp(temp, board, px, py)) { for (int x = 0; x < 19; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < 19; y++) { if (temp[x][y] == GRAY) { board[x][y] = YELLOW; } } } } player = opposite(player); } } private static boolean checkTemp(Color[][] temp, Color[][] board, int x, int y) { if (x < 19 && x > -1 && y < 19 && y > -1) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (x == 18) { if (temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (y == 18) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (y == 0) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (x == 0) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } else { if (x < 19) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x + 1, y); } } if (x >= 0) { if (temp[x - 1][y] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x - 1, y); } } if (y < 19) { if (temp[x][y + 1] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x, y + 1); } } if (y >= 0) { if (temp[x][y - 1] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x, y - 1); } } } return true; } private static void floodFill(int x, int y, Color player, Color[][] board, Color[][] temp) { if (board[x][y] != player) { return; } else { temp[x][y] = GRAY; System.out.println("x = " + x + " y = " + y); if (x < 19) { floodFill(x + 1, y, player, board, temp); } if (x >= 0) { floodFill(x - 1, y, player, board, temp); } if (y < 19) { floodFill(x, y + 1, player, board, temp); } if (y >= 0) { floodFill(x, y - 1, player, board, temp); } } } }

• How to Calculate TCP Socket Buffer Sizes for Data Guard Environments

- by alejandro.vargas
The MAA best practices contains an example of how to calculate the optimal TCP socket buffer sizes, that is quite important for very busy Data Guard environments, this document Formula to Calculate TCP Socket Buffer Sizes.pdf contains an example of using the instructions provided on the best practices document. In order to execute the calculation you need to know which is the band with or your network interface, usually will be 1Gb, on my example is a 10Gb network; and the round trip time, RTT, that is the time it takes for a packet to make a travel to the other end of the network and come back, on my example that was provided by the network administrator and was 3 ms (1000/seconds)

• GP11.1

- by user13334066
It's the Assen round of the 2011 motogp season, and Ducati have launched their GP11.1. The Ducati's front end woes were quite efficiently highlighted throughout the 2010 season, with both Casey and Nicky regularly visiting the gravel traps. Now the question is: was it really a front end issue. What's most probable is: the GP10 never had a front end issue. It was the rear that was out. So what did Stoner's team do? They came with setup changes that sorted out the rear end, while transferring the problem to the front. And Casey has this brilliant ability to push beyond the limits of a vague and erratic front end...and naturally the real problem lay hidden. Like Kevin Cameron said: in human nature, our strengths are our weaknesses. Casey's pure speed came at a lack of fine machinery feel, which ultimately took the Ducati in a wrong development direction.

• Using multiple A-records for my domain - do web browsers ever try more than one?

- by Jonas
If I add multiple A-records for my domain, they are returned in a round robin order by DNS-servers. E.g: 1.1.1.1 A example.com 1.1.1.2 A example.com 1.1.1.3 A example.com But how does webbrowsers react if the first host (1.1.1.1) is down (unreachable)? do they try the second host (1.1.1.2) or do they return a error message to the user? Are there any difference between the most popular browsers? If I implement my own application, I can implement so that the second is used in case the first is down, so it's possible. And this would be very helpful to create a fault tolerant website.

• Why are most websites optimized for viewing in portrait mode?

- by NVM
I simply cannot figure this out. Almost all monitors have an aspect ratio where width is much bigger than the height and yet almost all websites are designed exactly for the other way round? I am not really a web developer and am just experimenting stuff at the moment but this madness baffles me!!! Edit: The point is not that I would like to limit the height of a website. The point is that I'd wat it to somehow fill all available space when I have my 1920x1080 in landscape mode. Edit 2: See this to understand what I am saying

• Multi-lingual error messages and error numbers

- by Jon Hopkins
So we're looking at the possibility of porting our software to support multiple languages and one of the areas we're going to have to deal with is error messages and other notifications. These obviously have to be reported to the users in their own language. Our team (largely) only speak English and even if we were all multi-lingual we're looking at selling to a wide range of countries and could never expect to have a reasonable number of people speaking all languages (we're a small company). The obvious way to get round the language issue when errors or other messages we may get asked about which are being reported is error numbers which would be consistent across language. While these are going to exist in the backend (if only as key on the error message), I'd really rather not throw them at users if we don't have to but I don't have any other solution. Anyone have any useful suggestions for alternatives?

• Audiobooks for programmers?

- by Zoot
I'm a programmer with a two-hour round trip commute to work each day. I'd like to fill some of that time with audiobooks about software development. Any audiobooks that would help me become a better programmer would be appreciated. I'm thinking that books about design patterns and non-fiction about computing history might be good here, but I'm open to anything. Keeping in mind that I will be listening to this in a car, what are the best audiobooks that I can listen to? EDIT: Many people have also suggested podcasts. This is appreciated, but since podcasts arrive in a constantly arriving stream of data rather than as a finite amount of data, ways to juggle all of these different content streams would also be appreciated. To be more specific to my situation, my commuting vehicle has an MP3 CD player, USB input for MP3 files, and AUX input. I own Android and webOS devices that can be plugged into the AUX input.

• Java EE @ No Fluff Just Stuff Tour

- by reza_rahman
If you work in the US and still don't know what the No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour is, you are doing yourself a very serious disfavor. NFJS is basically a set program of world class speakers and topics offered at major US cities year round. I am proud to share with you that I recently joined the legendary NFJS troupe. My hope is that this will help solve the lingering problem of effectively spreading the Java EE message here in the US. I had my tour debut on April 4-5 with the NFJS New York Software Symposium. I did four of my most favorite talks and it was not that bad for a start - I have more in the coming months in Columbus Ohio, Denver Colorado and Austin Texas. More details on the tour posted on my personal blog. Hope to see you on the tour soon?

• Lighting a Voxel World Realistically

- by sharethis
I am new to game development and never implemented a complicated (and realistic) lighting. My game uses a 3d voxel terrain world (like Minecraft). To hold the data I use octrees. My goal is to render a more realistic world scene like in most voxel games. For that I want to use a bezier algorithm to round out the blocky world. Assume that I already have a large generated polygon of my terrain (or some of them). I heard of some techniques like volumetric light, global illumination, ... What approaches of a very realistic lighting are there for my "organic shaped" voxel game?
