• Windows 8 Fails to install with corrupted graphics

  I am trying to install Windows 8 Pro Upgrade via the download method on an older PC (07-08). It is a Dell Dimension E521 but it has been upgraded with a 3.0 Ghz Dual Core AMD Processor, 120 GB SSD, and 4 GB of RAM. The Windows 8 upgrade assistant did not detect any issues or concerns with upgrading other than I don't have DVD software installed. The system install Windows 8 but on the first boot, corrupt graphics are present. Eventually, the monitor will go into sleep mode and then roll back to Windows 7 Pro X64 which runs fine. I wouldn't be upset over not being able to install Windows 8, but I already paid for the software since I thought there would be no issues upgrading. The Graphics card in the system is the Geforce 7300LE and it has the latest NVidia drivers for Windows 7 loaded. I saw this solution which is similar to my problem: Corrupt graphics during Windows 8 installation However, I have downloaded Windows 8 and I am not sure how to go about modifying the install that resides somewhere on the hard drive. • How to prevent asymmetric routing with multiple eBGP routers?

  I have 2 routers announcing a /22 subnet to different providers (one providers connects to each of the 2 routers). I have split the /22 in two /23 to announce one /23 on each of the routers plus the /22 (the providers will take the more specific route). This allows me to fail over and keep traffic inside the /23 in and out the same provider. What are other ways in which I could announce just the /22 with both routers and have packets from servers on the network behind the routers go back out the same router in which they came in from? EDIT: The main problem I come across, which end users and clients complain about the most, is that the least hop route is sometimes not the "optimal" route. In my case, I know that Provider B may have better latency to X nation. But when packets come in from provider B, they may go out Provider A or provider B. The reverse is also true. If I send a packet to X nation out provider A, even though it may have more hops back, the packet will likely come in from Provider B (which may have higher latency, packet loss, etc. to this nation)

  I have a drive with failed sectors ect... I can't image it with Acronis as it hangs. I can't with Knoppiz it hangs. CHKDSK hangs. I want to use DDRescure but I don't have any Linux boxes running at the moment. I could do is in a VM but that seems like it would be slow and problematic? Are there any ways I can data recovery this disk from my Windows machine or is there an ideal way to work with DDRescue on Windows?

• Map a drive to root of a server (\\sever) in Vista

  Hi, In Win XP, I can very easily map a network drive to the root of my NAS server. I browse to it in Explorer (\192.168.1.70), choose "Map Network Drive", choose the drive letter, done. In Vista, this does not seem possible. I have to go "Map Network Drive" from 'Computer', then enter the address, but it will only let me map to specific shares (sub-folders off of the server root) and NOT to the server root share. Since my NAS has built-in shares (music, photo, video, etc.) then I would have to have drive letters for all of these, which I absolutely don't want. Can anyone tell me - how come I can easily map to the server root from XP, but not in Vista? Is there something fundamentally different in the networking across the two OS's? Or do I just need to do things a different way? Hope someone can help. Thanks, AT

  Hi Folks, I've started a new job at a house where they've got an amazingly unruly patchwork of Linux, xBSD, and OpenSolaris boxes. Every box has its own user auth using local /etc/passwd, etc. Users/Groups have differing uids/gids on each machine, and each machine has its own /home/ tree. (no central NAS /homes) My job is get get everything into an LDAP directory and use that for login auth. How do I get LDAP to deal with the differing uids/gids? Thanks.

• Offline productivity

  On some days I'm commuting 2hs (oneway) in the train. I don't have any mobile internet nor is there always WiFi service in the train. Because of security reasons I can't do any work in the train so I'm trying to work on my geek time. I'm looking for general solutions on how to do this (I'm on FireFox/Windows but I don't think it matters) Email works perfectly with gmail offline. It syncs directly when online and remembers complicated stuff. So far I used the ScrapBook plugin to store an website. It works good, but I have to download my favorite news page every day again - I want it to sync as soon as possible. It would even be more awesome if I could click a page on my desktop and my laptop would sync as soon as it has the chance. (edit: maybe the autosave plugin for scrapbook can do this) Similarily, I use the Downloadhelper plugin to download youtube vids, but I'd like something that automatically downloads videos from a given channel. Any tips are welcome. So far my early morning schedule is: wake up, power on laptop, make coffee, power off laptop and leave within 10 minutes (enough time for GMail to sync) but I can imagine a system where my laptop stays on during the night (or boots before I wake (and makes me coffee :])).

• How to set up a DNS name server to always resolve to a constant IP address for every request

  I am looking for a simple DNS name server set up to always return the same IP address no matter what the request is. The reason for this is we are a domain registrar and when a domain is first registered we need it to have valid name servers (and don't want to have to first create name server records before registering a domain). We will then subsequently change the name server records after the domain has been registered. I assume this is possible to do with bind but was wondering if there might be a simpler solution available using one of the more light weight name servers out there? Any suggestions on how to accomplish this in a simple manner will be appreciated.

• Encrypt EC2 API call

  I have to host an AMI in the Amazon Marketplace. i need to get the type of instance, whenever some user launches the AMI., like if its small medium or large. based on that i need to make some changes in the AMI when its created. I can do this with Amazon API call, to get the instance type, but the problem is that the instances created with the AMI will be started by other users, and i cannot use my AWS Credentials in the Amazon API. Is there any way that i can create an anonymous readonly user to make only specific type of EC2 API Calls? Or can i encrypt my EC2 API credentials, so no one can use it?

  I am sure this must be easy, but I am inexperienced. About the best way to think of my problem is to think of it as trying to sort and then count lottery numbers. To stay simple, let's do a Pick 3 game. Let's look at 10 drawings. I would split each drawn number into a separate column: DATE BALL#1 BALL#2 BALL#3 3/1 1 3 5 3/2 3 7 8 3/3 2 2 1 3/4 5 7 6 3/5 2 3 1 3/6 0 5 9 3/7 3 7 0 3/8 6 8 4 3/9 2 4 3 3/10 7 1 2 I would like to be able to build formulas into cells that would tell me how many times each number appeared overall, and how many times each number appeared in the position it occurred. Like this (using the above example): Number Overall Count Ball#1 Count Ball#2 Count Ball#3 Count 0 2 1 0 1 1 4 1 1 2 (That is, The number zero appears twice overall, and came up once as the first number drawn; zero times as the middle ball; and once as the third ball. Likewise, the number 1 was drawn four times in our 10-day period. It was the first ball once, the second ball once and the third ball twice.) And so on. All help appreciated. I have extracted the CD and started to change some parts of it, e.g Splash screen (splash.png) installer Title (through isolinux.cfg) etc These are the things that I want to do: Change the Splash logo at start up of installation to have my own (which is done) Change the grub boot parameters to use my comapny name on it. • Protecting Backups from Viruses

  Currently we are using ReadyNAS RN102 by NETGEAR to hold all our images from all our machines. My question is can viruses expand from the machines and infect the NAS drive and the backups? We are using AOMEI Backupper. EDIT: Basically, I want to keep my clean backups clean. I keep Daily, Weekly, Monthly achievable backups, my worry is a virus might attempt or try to infect these backups making using them worthless.

• USB Hub powers down in sleep mode on Win 7 64

  This question has been asked before but not answered. I would like the USB hub to remain on in sleep so I can wake up the laptop from an external keyboard and mouse. I have set all the device drivers by unchecking allow this device to be powered down and disabled selective suspend in control panel but the hub still powers down. If I plug a keyboard or mouse directly in to the PC they remain powered and wake the computer its only when they are connected through the hub there is a problem. I have another PC running Win 7 32. If I set this up in exactly the same way the hub remains powered in sleep. Both PC's are Toshiba Satellites with multi-core celerons but one runs Win 7 32 the other Win 7 64. BIOS settings are the same. Any help would be appreciated even confirmation that this is a feature of Win 7 64.

• If my Remote Desktop Connection Broker server goes down, can users still access my two Terminal Servers?

  I would like to setup the Remote Desktop Connection Broker to allow better load balancing of the two terminal servers we have as well as allowing the user to re-establish to the correct server if they get disconnected. My worry is, if I set this up and the server this service is running goes down, does the terminal server stop accepting connections or will they just lose the benefit of having RDCB turned on? I don't want to add another point of failure in this equation unless I have to.

• Backing up a Linux VPS with RSync to Vista

  I've been working to setup a Linux VPS to host a couple of Wordpress sites and eventually a Mercurial server. I've setup one site and things have gone well. However, before I start moving other things to the VPS, I need to setup a backup solution. My provider, Linode, suggest RSync (among a couple of other options) to do backups. I've seen a few posts on this site that suggests other backup solutions including going to the Amazon Cloud but that costs money and the VPS is all the money I want to spend on this for the time being. So, to help solve that I want to have my backup computer be my home desktop computer. Assuming I'm using RSync, is it possible to use my Vista based home computer to become the destination for the backup? And if it is possible, what type of command or connection would I need to configure on the vista machine? Any insight would be helpful. It's probably obvious, but I've never used RSync.

• Webpage / Other application does not fit fully on screen

  I have an ASUS Eee PC 1008 HA The problem is that I have to move the cursor up/down in order to see the start control / icons at the bottom of the screen and the cursor up in order to see the menu bar / etc at the top of the screen, ie the whole page does not fit on the screen anymore. It has nothing to do with the zoom % in the bottom right hand corner. This also is the case whatever application I am running, ie Internet explorer , word, excel or whatever. Does anybody have an idea what is the problem and how I can resolve this?

  On my cpanel server, I restored about 50 accounts from crashed cpanel server. All of the sites were working fine, but suddenly without changing anything, every site started to get redirected to url "http://:2083/"., There is nothing in logs, no errors. when i do wget it says: wget grinfeld.com.br --2012-09-04 13:18:23-- http://grinfeld.com.br/ Resolving grinfeld.com.br... 198.101.221.254 Connecting to grinfeld.com.br|198.101.221.254|:80... connected. • what type of laptop do I need to run a amd64 or i386 VM?

  I was running an amd64 build of Ubuntu on a VM on a Windows host which was also amd64. Later I found I could not run the same amd64 iso on my laptop, which is intel without hyper-V. I was confused I thought chipset mattered, but maybe it does not. When buying a PC or Apple, is there anything to check about the chipset to make sure it can run different types of VMs? In my case, I was trying to run ubuntu on a Thinkpad T520. Per answer below, I did need to enable some bios settings. I'm still having some issues. Running ubuntu on virtual box, when I try to use ubuntu-12.10-server-amd64.iso for the CD/DVD device to start a new VM, virtualbox complains "Failed to open the CD/DVD image . Could not get the storage format of the medium (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED). When I try to use ubuntu-12.10-server-i386.iso the ISO is accepted, but then the VM complains "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." I had been using an amd64 iso on my home PC which is amd64 and it works fine, which is why I suspected CPU mismatch was the problem at first. But it seems like I'm having issues, and maybe this superuser thread can be used to verify the cpu is irrelevant in this case.

• Why can't I index a SUBST'd drive in Windows7?

  I've got a SUBST for a folder to drive letter P: I have noticed that exploring these folders from P: is now INCREDIBLY slow, taking up to a minute sometimes to show files. I'm showing them as general files and not thumbnails, so it's not that. Looking at the original folder in explorer is lightning fast. I've checked the indexing options and indeed the folder where my files are stored is checked as indexed. I can see my P: drive in the list, but clicking on the checkbox won't do anything. It's not even checkable. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can fix this? (Running Windows 7 just to be clear).

  On site A, I have sucessfully set up a bacula director on one host, several File Daemons on the hosts I want to backup, and finally one Storage Daemon where the backup actually is stored. If disaster struck the building Site A, I want a second Storage Daemon on another site, Site B. The Filesets, Director etc would be the same, except the jobs will be stored on the other Storage Daemon as well. Are there any best practises on this?

  I want to set a variable in the http context of nginx so it applies to all my servers. However, 'if' is only supported in server & location. How can I set a variable in the http context so it will affect all servers? Might the lua module be able to help with this (although I'd rather have a pure nginx solution).
