  • What is the BCSI-CS-**** cookie for?

    I'm undertaking an audit of the cookies we use on our external sites. There's one cookie that's used by all the sites, and by different domains within the sites. It starts BCSI-CS- and has random numbers and letters. It's the same cookie on different PCs on our network. Our own sites use it and Bing Maps, Google Analytics and Google Maps on our sites use it. This cookie does not seem to appear on PCs not on our network. We've figured that it's a cookie that our proxy server uses and therefore only an internal cookie, not one that our external site users will encounter. However, googling that cookie shows a lot of sites have listed a similar cookie in their "About our cookies" page with the same BCSI-CS prefix. Would we be right in thinking that these sites have got it wrong, that they don't have to list this cookie? After all, when I visit these sites, the cookie that they have listed does not appear on my PC. Can anyone confirm this, or explain what the BCSI-CS cookie actually is?

  • SQL SERVER – SELECT TOP Shortcut in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

    This is tool is pretty old, yet always comes as a handy tip. I had a great trip at TechEd in India. And, during one of my presentations, I was asked if there are any shortcuts to SELECT only TOP 100 records from SSMS. I immediately told him that if he explores the table in SSMS, he can just right click on it and SELECT TOP 1000 records. If he wanted only 100 records, then he could edit that 1000 to 100 by means of going to Options. Go to Options, then hover the mouse over the SQL Server Object Explorer, then proceed to Commands. Afterwards, change the Value for Select Top <n> Audit Records. After narrating the steps, he told me that he was not looking for the right click option; rather he was asking if there is any kind of keyboard shortcut for convenience’s sake. Actually, a keyboard shortcut is also possible. SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) lets you configure the settings you want using a shortcut. Here is how you can do it. Go to Options, then to Environment. Proceed to Keyboard, and from there, configure your T-SQL with the desired keyword. Now, open SSMS New Query Window, and then click and type in any table name.  After that, just hit the shortcut you just made earlier. Doing this should display TOP 100 records in the Result window. I am sure this trick is quite old, but it is still helpful to many.   • Problem with using sysprep tool for running Windows on a different Hardware

    Hi, I am using sysprep tool for running Windows 7 on a different Hardware. What I do is that run sysprep on a computer, select System Audit, check the Generalize check box, select Shutdown, click OK and wait for the computer to shutdown. When the system shuts down, I remove the hard disk from my computer and plug it into another computer having different Hardware. Then I turn ON the computer and after a series of operations (including one reboot), I eventually get to the Desktop of Windows on the changed hardware computer BUT the problem is that System Preparation Tool's start up automatically. I rebooted the computer but the System Preparation Tool start up each time. One more thing that noted was that computer gives a message at each reboot before loading Desktop that "System is now preparing your computer for first use". Any idea how can i get a clean Desktop after performing sysprep? or is there any step I am missing? Thanks a lot

  • Poor upload/download speed on 2 x ADSL lines into a Cisco 2621XM

I have users complaining of very slow internetn connectivity on site and have checked with our ISP who have said that the line is testing at 8mb. We have 2 x BT lines that have our ISP broadand on them. Both lines go into a Cisco 2600 series router that then has a PIX firewall off that. Connectivity is successful just gone really slow and unable to download anything. As far as I understand, they want to apply some access policies to undesired sites, and log/audit the usage of the internet and generate employee internet usage reports. My question is related to the latter part. Before they were using a proxy server, they were also generating internet usage reports. At that point, what kind of contribution will the new proxy server make? Does it have further advantages on reporting internet usage?

  • Smart card / auditable access for rack KVM tray

    Is there such a thing as a KVM Tray for a standard 19" rack whose use can be validated by a smartcard (or some other auditable authentication method)? It looks like we have a security requirement where just because users have a key to the rack doesn't mean they will be allowed to use the console inside the rack, and rather than just lock the console (and keep track of who has keys), we would prefer to be able to audit the actual user that was attached at the KVM. (It's worth mentioning that I'm aware of the Raritan devices, but they surely can't be the only ones) (If these things existed, I don't think half of the tratoirs that somehow manage to infiltrate CTU on the TV show 24 would ever get away with anything)

  • Syslog - capturing event logs from Win2k boxes

    Hi all, I asked this question in SuperUser without much luck and so I am posting it here to see if anyone can assist. We have a central syslog server and we want it to capture event log events from Windows hosts. We are specifically interested in logging service start/stop events. We installed "Eventlog to Syslog" on these windows hosts and all works well with XP hosts (Events come from Service Control Manager). However, we are having issues with Win2k hosts. For some reason, service start/stop events do not get logged in the Event Log for Win2k hosts. I got another friend from another company to test on a Win2k host and he does get start/stop events on them. I have searched around for local audit policies i need to enable but with not much luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • How to protect my VPS from winlogon RDP spam requests

    I got some hackers constantly hitting my RDP and generating thousands of audit failures in event log. Password is pretty elaborate so I dont think bruteforcing will get them anywhere. I am using VPS and I am pretty much a noob in Windows Server security (am a programmer myself and its my webserver for my site). Which is a recommended approach to deal with this? I would rather block IPs after some amount of failures for example. Sorry if question is not appropriate.

    I'm trying to set up a test LDAP-server for some developers but I'm running into some trouble. service slapd start errors so I run /usr/sbin/slapd -d 1 and this gives me the following error at the end: unable to open pid file "/var/run/ldap/slapd.pid": 13 (Permission denied) slapd destroy: freeing system resources. slapd stopped. The rights for /var/run/ldap are as follows: root@pec:/var/run/ldap# ls -ld drwxr-xr-x 2 openldap openldap 60 2012-07-04 20:45 So I don't get why there is still a permission denied. I got it back today and every time it boots up I am faced with: "Setup is preparing windows for first time use" Then once it gets to the desktop I get the sysprep dialog come up asking if I want OOBC or Audit actions. I can close it, but it just keeps coming back, and I cannot find any startup or boot actions, even downloaded autoruns, and that cannot find anything to do with it. Ideally I do not want to format/fdisk as I have just spent hours installing everything on the laptop and I have my primary C:/ which has all windows and at worst case I can get rid of that, but I have a secondary partition D:/ which has alot of stuff I cant lose as its work related and important. Also to make matters more difficult I do not have a windows 7 disk, it was just pre-installed and they dont provide a disk. Any help would be great!

    There's an hidden gem in SQL Server 2008: Change Data Capture (CDC). Using CDC we get full audit capabilities with absolutely no implementation code: we can see all changes made to a specific table, including the old and new values! You can only use CDC in SQL Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise, Express edition is not supported.   • IIS reveals internal IP address in content-location field - fix

    Referring: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q218180/, there is a known issue in IIS4/5/6 whereby it will reveal the internal IP of a web server in the content-location field of the HTTP header. We have IIS 6. I have tried the fix suggested, but it has not worked. The website is configured to send all requests to ASP.NET, and I am wondering if this is why the fix, which addresses IIS configuration, has not worked for us. If this is the case, how would we fix this in ASP.NET? We need to fix this issue in order to pass a security audit.

  • What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

    On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. I'm probably grasping for straws but the details: Log Name: Security Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing Date: 7/8/2009 1:39:50 PM Event ID: 5159 Task Category: Filtering Platform Connection Level: Information Keywords: Audit Failure User: N/A Computer: is071019.<**.net Description: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a bind to a local port. Application Information: Process ID: 1260 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume1\windows\system32\svchost.exe Network Information: Source Address: 0.0.0.0 Source Port: 54802 Protocol: 17 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 0 Layer Name: Resource Assignment Layer Run-Time ID: 36 I've also tried to use Failed Request Tracing in IIS7 but the service call never actually gets to where FRT can capture it (even though the failure is logged in the web service log). The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening.   • Redhat Kernel patching advice

    An audit has pointed out that a RHEL server I manage has not had the latest kernel patches applied. I'm confused about kernel patching and within RHEL in relation to RHEL dot releases i.e 5.2 , 5.3 ,5.4 ..... Can someone answer these questions ? If I want to stay at a dot release of RHEL, say 5.4, can apply just updates to the 5.4 kernel or will applying kernel updates bring the server to a later dot release by default? The reason for this question is that I have applications that are only supported on say RHEL5.4 and going to a more recent dot release of RHEL 5 would break the support. I have some HP psp hba drivers compiled against the currently installed kernel, will applying a kernel update break these drivers as they were complied against the orginal kernel ? Anything else I need to look out for with regards to kernel patching ?
