• Cannot start TFS Build service: Error 1227

  When I try to start the TFS 2008 Build service on the port 9191 I get the following error message: Windows could not start the Visual Studio Team Foundation Build service on Local Computer. Error 1227: The network transport endpoint already has an address associated with it. If I use another port it works, but I need it to be the default, 9191. I tried using the following commands wcfhttpconfig.exe free 9191 wcfhttpconfig.exe reserve Domain\ServiceAccount 9191 Both commands succeeses, but the service does not start. I will appreciate any help!

  I have recently moved my solution from my main dev machine using vs2010 pro sp1 to a new machine. The setup is supposed to be the same except its failing to build. Its giving errors like c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets(1360,9): warning MSB3258: The primary reference "C:\rep\hms\trunk\ikassystemv3\ikasDAL\bin\Debug\ikasDAL.dll" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the .NET Framework assembly "mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" which has a higher version "4.0.0.0" than the version "2.0.0.0" in the current target framework. However all all the libraries in question are set to use the .net 2 framework and I need it this way or else it will break stuff that uses them. However for some reason it seems to think that somehow my .net 2 system libs are somehow referencing .net 4 stuff.   All I am looking for the best free set of tools to be used in a MS Based build process. Checkout, Build, Package, Test, Deploy, etc. I know this question has been asked before but it was over 2 years ago, and in our world that is an eternity. I am looking to develop a pattern that is easily adapted to similar projects. Almost like a template/cookie cutter system. I am currently looking into using CruiseControl, Powershell, MSBuild suite of tools. If we choose to move to 4.0 will we have issues? Are there better alternatives? Limitations ? Or will these pretty much meet my needs. One piece that i am never happy with is the process of packaging. We actually have opted in the past to just use Visual Studio Deployment Projects but those are very* ancient and my fear is WIX will be too complicated for the people implementing it.

  Hi I'm getting a strange error when building my WCF RIA Services Silverlight project in VS2008. In the output I have this message: C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\Silverlight\v3.0\Microsoft.Ria.Client.targets(261,5): error : Failed to write the generated contents of 'C:\projects\[Path_To_Silverlight_Project]\Generated_Code\Analytics.Web.g.cs' to Visual Studio. ...and Visual Studio opens a dialog while building with the following: An editor or project is attempting to save a file that is modified in memory. Saving files during a build is dangerous and may result in incorrect build outputs in the future. Continue with save? The other members on my team seems to be doing just fine, but I can't get past this point (I can if I click 'Continue' which then generate the file just fine but I'm reluclant to do so). There must be some setup or similar that I'm missing here... PS: I'm currently on WinXP and WCF RIA Service beta

  I'm trying do build and debug a small project for BlackBerry. During the build I'm getting this error Error preverifying class java ... I read on the net this error could be caused by referencing multiple projects but I tried to move every package in a single project but the error is still there. I tried with multiple JDE version (currently 4.7) and the Java compiler is set to 1.6. Eclipse version is 3.4.1 as recommended by RIM's documentations. Does someone have some clue?

  Hi All, I've just implemented build and deploy process which consists of java files, ant script and cmd files. In the process, a release manager will have to check out source, hit the build.cmd button and then carry a zip file over to a server. I am wondering if it is worthwhile to make a GUI for it? So that the release manager does not need to check out source manually for example? How do I start? I have quite limited knowledge of javax, but I very much like to learn. Thanks, Sarah

• .NET Application using a native DLL (build management)

  I have a .NET app that is dependent on a native DLL. I have the .NET app set as AnyCPU. In the post-build step, I plan to copy the correct native DLL from some directory (x86 or AMD64) and place it in the target path. However, this doesn't work. On a 64-bit machine, the environment variable PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE is "x86" in Visual Studio. My alternative right now is to create a small tool that outputs the processor architecture. This will be used by the post-build step. Is there a better alternative? (Side Note: when deploying/packaging the app, the right native DLL is copied to the right platform. But this means we have two separate release folders for x86 and AMD64, which is OK since this is for a device driver. The app is a utility tool for the driver).

• C# VS 2008 Build Configurations - using different classes for different builds

  I'm writing an application which has two classes that provide basically the same functionality but for different situations. I'd like to have three versions of the software - one where the user can change an ini file to configure the program to use one of the two classes, and then one version that only uses one of the two classes. Right now I have it working via an ini file, but I'd like to be able to build versions that don't include the code for the unneeded class at all. What is the best way to go about this? My current line of thinking is that since both classes derive from a common interface I'll just add a compile time conditional that looks at the active build configuration and decides whether to compile that class. What is the syntax to do that? Thanks in advance for your help and input!

  I will start a new C++ project (it may have some C components as well) soon and I am looking for a modern, industrial-strength (i.e. non-beta) build system. The software will be created by several developers in 3-5 years and will run on Linux (Mac OS X and Windows might be supported later). I am looking for something that has better comprehensibility, ease-of-use and maintainability than e.g. make but is still powerful enough to handle a complex project. Open source software is preferred. I started looking into Boost.Build, CMake, Maven and SCons so far and liked features and concepts of all of those, but I'm lacking the experience to make a decision for a large project.

• Infinite queue for build while TFS Preview publishing on Azure Cloud Service

  I've created Cloud Service and linked TFS Preview Project for CI deployments. I've chosen Manual mode for triggering the builds. The previously queued builds were successfully completed and deployed. And the website based on this Cloud Service was running fine. Waiting in the queue was no more than 3-5 seconds. Now when I click - "Queue New Build" - the new build item is created in the queue but it never runs. I can successfully Publish project onto Azure Cloud service from VS2012 though. What could be the most common reasons for this?

• Xen and HyperVM build question on os template

  I recently built a server with hypervm and xen, now i know xen from command line, but hypervm ties into our whmcs and so its a requirement, however my question is this, when i build a new o/s template my partition table is gone, and i know why, but i was wondering if anyone has built anything in hypervm for adding in partition tables, so i dont have to reinvent the wheel :). i can do it command line in the created vm with fdisk, and i have tracked down the creation scripts for hypervm but i am unsure if these insert directly into the machine as it looks like a lot of the things it does are externalized and are for xen to assign things like ip address etc.. oh and on an aside when i go in to modify the .cnf file to change the boot disk from cdrom to drive on windows when i boot using hypervm it overwrites my setting again..frustrating as heck, i've been trying to track down where in the code it does this, has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it if you did?

  Ok, I feel dumb. I've put many hours into this and found nothing, yet. When I was using Windows I had this little tool called WinSplit Revolution. What it did was letting you divide your screen into how many and of how much size you choose "virtual monitors". You set one time of you want to divide your monitor, then everytime WinSplit is opened the monitor is automatically divided into Virtual Monitors. I tried Divvy but I found no way to divide my screen into arbitrary "virtual monitors", I need a couple of clicks to select a 3x3 space on a 9x9 grid. Before starting coding something like this can you tell me if you already know of some software that does window management like this?

• Sharing disk volumes across OpenVZ guests to reduce Package Management Overhead

  Is it feasible to create a single "master" OpenVZ guest who would only be used for package management, and use something like mount --bind on several other OpenVZ guests sort of trick them into using the environment installed by the master guest? The point of this would be so that users can maintain their own containers, and yet stay in sync with the master development environment, so they'll always have the latest & greatest requirements without worrying too much about system administration. If they need to install their own packages, could put them in /opt, or /usr/local (or set a path to their home directory)? To rephrase, I would like several (developer's, for example) OpenVZ guests whose /bin, /usr (and so on...) actually refer to the same disk location as that of a master OpenVZ guest who can be started up to install and update common packages for the environment to be shared by all of this group of OpenVZ guests. For what it's worth, we're running Debian 6. • Hudson Notifier?

  Is their any notifier which let's you add specific build in the notifier. Right now i am using Hudson Tacker (http://hudsontracker.sourceforge.net/index.html) which works fine but it only let's me add one build or all the builds. I didn't see any notifiers in http://wiki.hudson-ci.org/display/HUDSON/Plugins which might have this functionality. Thanks.

  Oracle recently provided Five Point Partners, Research and Analysis Division's Warren B. Causey and Bart Thielbar a one-hour briefing of Oracle Utilities Mobile Workforce Management 2.0. Based on that briefing, Warren and Bart provided an evaluation of the new software. The review notes that this is the first major rewrite of a mobile system. Oracle Utilities has made numerous updates in structure, architecture and functionality to the software that should well-position Oracle Utilities Mobile Workforce Management 2.0 for the current utility market. Additionally, the reviewers noted that one of the most significant improvements in the new version of Oracle Utilities Mobile Workforce Management is that it has moved to the same Java technical stack of other Oracle Utilities products. Utilities can deploy the software in multiple environments including Linux, Unix and Windows. This will simplify integration with existing Oracle products, as well as with other systems, thus potentially lowering cost of installation and ownership for utilities. Overall, Warren and Bart note that Oracle Utilities now has an impressive, state-of-the-art mobile workforce management system that utilities can readily deploy in a bundle with other Oracle solutions, or use as a stand-alone system with relatively easy integration to other utility systems. They state that Oracle Utilities Mobile Workforce Management 2.0 should significantly strengthen Oracle's competitive position in the mobile workforce management solution space. • Management Reporter Installation – Lessons Learned

  After successfully completing several installations of Management Reporter this year, I wanted to share a few lessons learned that should help you. First, you will want to make sure that you install Management Reporter under a domain account as opposed to a local system or network service account. Management Reporter gives you the option to install under these accounts, but it is a be a best practice approach to use a domain account. Upon installation of Management Report, you will want to make sure that Directory Browsing is enabled within the IIS server of your site or you will have problems when you go to use Management Reporter. By default, it will be disabled in Server 2008 R2 and you will need to make the setting change under the Actions pane shown below. Lastly, you will want to make sure that SQL Server is running under a domain account. I have had multiple situations where reports have been stuck in the Queued status rather than Processing status of Management Reporter. After reviewing resolution 5 of KB 2298248, it was determined that running SQL Server under a domain account is the way to go.
