  • How to allow a single domain name with iptables

    - by Claw
    I am looking for a way to make iptables only accept requests for my domain name and reject the others. Lately I misconfigured my apache proxy, it is now fixed, but I keep receiving a load of requests looking like that : xxxx.xx:80 142.54.184.226 - - [12/Sep/2012:15:25:14 +0200] "GET http://ad.bharatstudent.com/st?ad_type=iframe&ad_size=700x300&section=3011105&pub_url=${PUB_URL} HTTP/1.0" 200 4985 "http://www.gethealthbank.com/category/medicine/" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 4.0)" xxxx.xx:80 199.116.113.149 - - [12/Sep/2012:15:25:14 +0200] "GET http://mobile1.login.vip.ird.yahoo.com/config/pwtoken_get?login=heaven_12_&src=ntverifyint&passwd=7698ca276acaf6070487899ad2ee2cb9&challenge=wTBYIo2AEdMFr6LtdyQZPqYw9FS9&md5=1 HTTP/1.0" 200 425 "-" "MobileRunner-J2ME" which I would like to block. How can I manage this ?

  • What antivirus software supports updates without an internet connection?

    - by Michael Gundlach
I'm putting antivirus software on Windows 7 computers in the middle of Africa. The computers don't have internet access, but still need to be protected against viruses from CDs and thumbdrives. Separate from these computers is one computer that does have extremely spotty internet access. What's the best AV software for this situation? The important part, as I see it, is that we need to keep the computers up to date, but can't let the AV software suck down updates at its leisure: the computers are disconnected, and getting emails onto the connected computer is a challenge enough. We thought we might transfer update files to the connected computer using a protocol that can handle repeated connection drops (e.g. FTP with resume.) Then we'd manually apply the update files to the disconnected computers. Does any AV software support this? Is there a better solution?

  • Creating a webserver from scratch

    - by Val
I know this is going to sound a humongous task and many of you would think why in the world would you want to do so or why re-invent the wheel. However I just want a project I can work on the side see how it goes and experiment ( I got a thirst for learning something new and this is a great challenge). Question Where would I start creating a server-side scripting like php, asp and (now) node.js I would like to have a few examples, and most importantly a CODEX/documentation where I can learn and find out more how it works. I guess I am asking for directions where to go to read and find out more about this. Many thanks,

  • Controlling access to my API using SSH public key (not SSL)

    - by tharrison
I have the challenge of implementing an API to be consumed by relatively non-technical clients -- pasting some sample code into their WordPress or homegrown PHP site is probably as much as we can ask. Asking them to install SSL on their servers ain't happening. So I am seeking a simple yet secure way to authenticate API clients. OAuth is the obvious solution, but I don't think it passes the "simple" test. Adding a client id and hashed secret as a parameter to the requests is closer -- it's not hard to do md5($secret . $client_id) or whatever the php would be. It seems to me that if client requests could use the same approach as SSH public keys (client gives us a key from their server(s) there should be some existing magic to make all of the subsequent transactions transparently work just as regular HTTP API requests. I am still working this out (obviously :-), so if I am being an idiot, it would be nice to know why. Thanks!

  • Getting the keyboard working on a MacBook under Windows XP x64

    - by Theran
Despite Windows XP Professional x64's unsupported status on MacBooks (model A1181), I've managed to get most of the hardware working by manually installing either the drivers on the OS X Snow Leopard CD, or finding the appropriate drivers online. However, even after installing the Apple keyboard driver from the CD, I can't get Windows to actually use the special driver. Instead, the keyboard just shows up as a generic USB keyboard, with non-functioning Fn and other special keys. Being unable to generate a right-click or Ctrl-Alt-Del makes Windows a bit of a challenge to use. I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard driver removing the keyboard under device manager and letting Windows re-detect it using device manager to manually update the driver How do I get the special functions of the MacBook keyboard working under XP x64?

  • Force firefox to open pages in a specific tab using command line

    - by user36306
Hey Guys, Here's the challenge--I developed Softphone Screenpop PHP App that takes caller id info and searches for a match in our db, also allows us to collect call statistics. Great for our management but it's driving our reps nuts. We use firefox here and when our softphone pops to the external page, every time it opens in a new tab, the girls quickly get 5-10 open and it becomes confusing. Our softphone will also run command line. I wondering if there is a way to have a URL open in a certain tab. Otherwise does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!

  • Possible? OpenVPN server requiring both certificate- AND password-based login (via Tomato router firmware)

    - by Eric
I've been using Shibby's build of Tomato (64k NVRAM version) on my Asus N66U router in order to run an OpenVPN server. I'm curious whether it's possible to setup this OpenVPN server to require both a certificate AND a username/password before a user is allowed access. I noticed there's a "challenge password" entry when filling out the certificate details, but everyone says to leave it blank "or else"; I have no idea why, and I can't find an explanation. In addition, I've Google'd this issue a bunch and have noticed people talking about a PAM module for OpenVPN in order to authenticate via username/password, but that appeared to be an either/or option; in other words, I can force authentication via username/password OR certificate. I want to require both. Is this possible? If so, how?

I try to run following command from shell script: svn checkout http://url/ --username user --password password --non-interactive --no-auth-cache . It fails always with following error: svn: OPTIONS of 'http://url/': authorization failed: Could not authenticate to server: rejected Basic challenge (http://url) Here the call out of my script: $(svn $command $url $auth --non-interactive --no-auth-cache .) Running the same command from the terminal works fine. What is the difference between running from shell script and terminal? • Building a Student Storage server

    - by DobotJr
I work for a school district. I've been put in charge of building a storage server for students. A place for them to work off of from school and home. My challenge is getting this to work from home. At school they login, authenticate, and they get a mapped drive to their folder on the server (S:\fileserver\studentname). My question is how can I make this available to students at home? The server is running Windows Server 2003 R1. I've got PHP, Apache, and MySQL working together. My idea is to write a script that will "crawl" through the directory containing all of the student folders, then create an instance of every file and folder in a MySQL DB. Create a login page that will use LDAP for authentication, and once they login to the server from home, they get a page with folders a files tied to their username. Has anyone out there ever put something like this together??

  • Visual Basic Cryptography Question

    - by Glenn Sullivan
    I am trying to mimic the results of some C code that uses the OpenSSL library using the system.security.crytography library in the .net 3.5 world, and I can't seem to get it right. I need some help... part of the issue is my understanding of crytography in general. Here's what is supposed to happen: I send a request for authentication to a device. It returns a challenge digest, which I then need to sign with a known key and return The device returns a "success" or "Fail" message. I have the following code snippet that I am trying to "copy": //Seed the PRNG //Cheating here - the PRNG will be seeded when we create a key pair //The key pair is discarded only doing this to seed the PRNG. DSA *temp_dsa = DSA_new(); if(!temp_dsa) { printf("Error: The client had an error with the DSA API\n"); exit(0); } unsigned char seed[20] = "Our Super Secret Key"; temp_dsa = DSA_generate_parameters(128, seed, sizeof(seed), NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL); DSA_free(temp_dsa); //A pointer to the private key. p = (unsigned char *)&priv_key; //Create and allocate a DSA structure from the private key. DSA *priv_dsa = NULL; priv_dsa = d2i_DSAPrivateKey(NULL, &p, sizeof(priv_key)); if(!priv_dsa) { printf("Error: The client had an error with the DSA API\n"); exit(0); } //Allocate memory for the to be computed signature. sigret = OPENSSL_malloc(DSA_size(priv_dsa)); //Sign the challenge digest recieved from the ISC. retval = DSA_sign(0, pResp->data, pResp->data_length, sigret, &siglen, priv_dsa); A few more bits of information: priv_key is a 252 element character array of hex characters that is included. The end result is a 512 (or less) array of characters to send back for validation to the device. Rasmus asked to see the key array. Here it is: unsigned char priv_key[] = {0x30, 0x81, 0xf9, 0x02, 0x01, 0x00, 0x02, 0x41, 0x00, 0xfe, 0xca, 0x97, 0x55, 0x1f, 0xc0, 0xb7, 0x1f, 0xad, 0xf0, 0x93, 0xec, 0x4b, 0x31, 0x94, 0x78, 0x86, 0x82, 0x1b, 0xab, 0xc4, 0x9e, 0x5c, 0x40, 0xd9, 0x89, 0x7d, 0xde, 0x43, 0x38, 0x06, 0x4f, 0x1b, 0x2b, 0xef, 0x5c, 0xb7, 0xff, 0x21, 0xb1, 0x11, 0xe6, 0x9a, 0x81, 0x9a, 0x2b, 0xef, 0x3a, 0xbb, 0x5c, 0xea, 0x76, 0xae, 0x3a, 0x8b, 0x92, 0xd2, 0x7c, 0xf1, 0x89, 0x8e, 0x4d, 0x3f, 0x0d, 0x02, 0x15, 0x00, 0x88, 0x16, 0x1b, 0xf5, 0xda, 0x43, 0xee, 0x4b, 0x58, 0xbb, 0x93, 0xea, 0x4e, 0x2b, 0xda, 0xb9, 0x17, 0xd1, 0xff, 0x21, 0x02, 0x41, 0x00, 0xf6, 0xbb, 0x45, 0xea, 0xda, 0x72, 0x39, 0x4f, 0xc1, 0xdd, 0x02, 0xb4, 0xf3, 0xaa, 0xe5, 0xe2, 0x76, 0xc7, 0xdc, 0x34, 0xb2, 0x0a, 0xd8, 0x69, 0x63, 0xc3, 0x40, 0x2c, 0x58, 0xea, 0xa6, 0xbd, 0x24, 0x8b, 0x6b, 0xaa, 0x4b, 0x41, 0xfc, 0x5f, 0x21, 0x02, 0x3c, 0x27, 0xa9, 0xc7, 0x7a, 0xc8, 0x59, 0xcd, 0x5b, 0xdd, 0x6c, 0x44, 0x48, 0x86, 0xd1, 0x34, 0x46, 0xb0, 0x89, 0x55, 0x50, 0x87, 0x02, 0x41, 0x00, 0x80, 0x29, 0xc6, 0x4a, 0x08, 0x3e, 0x30, 0x54, 0x71, 0x9b, 0x95, 0x49, 0x55, 0x17, 0x70, 0xc7, 0x96, 0x65, 0xc8, 0xc2, 0xe2, 0x8a, 0xe0, 0x5d, 0x9f, 0xe4, 0xb2, 0x1f, 0x20, 0x83, 0x70, 0xbc, 0x88, 0x36, 0x03, 0x29, 0x59, 0xcd, 0xc7, 0xcd, 0xd9, 0x4a, 0xa8, 0x65, 0x24, 0x6a, 0x77, 0x8a, 0x10, 0x88, 0x0d, 0x2f, 0x15, 0x4b, 0xbe, 0xba, 0x13, 0x23, 0xa1, 0x73, 0xa3, 0x04, 0x37, 0xc9, 0x02, 0x14, 0x06, 0x8e, 0xc1, 0x41, 0x40, 0xf1, 0xf6, 0xe1, 0xfa, 0xfb, 0x64, 0x28, 0x02, 0x15, 0xce, 0x47, 0xaa, 0xce, 0x6e, 0xfe}; Can anyone help me translate this code to it's VB.net crypto equivalent?   • Error in python - don't understand

    - by Jasper
Hi, I'm creating a game, and am quite new to Python generally. I created a function 'descriptionGenerator()' which generates a description for characters and objects either randomly or using variables passed to it. It seemed to be working, but every now and then it wouldn't work correctly. So i placed it in a loop, and it never seems to be able to complete the loop without one of the iterations having this problem. The code is as follows: #+------------------------------------------+ #| Name: bitsandpieces.py | #| A module for the 'Europa I' game | #| created for the Game Making Competition | #| | #| Date Created/Modified: | #| 3/4/10 | 3/4/10 | #+------------------------------------------+ # Import the required modules # Import system modules: import time import random # Import 3rd party modules: # Import game modules: # Define the 'descriptionGenerator()' function def descriptionGenerator(descriptionVariables): descriptionVariableSize = len(descriptionVariables) if descriptionVariables[0] == 'char': # If there is only one variable ('char'), create a random description if descriptionVariableSize == 1: # Define choices for descriptionVariables to be generated from gender_choices = ['male', 'female'] hair_choices = ['black', 'red', 'blonde', 'grey', 'brown', 'blue'] hair_choices2 = ['long', 'short', 'cropped', 'curly'] size_choices = ['tubby', 'thin', 'fat', 'almost twig-like'] demeanour_choices = ['glowering', 'bright', 'smiling', 'sombre', 'intelligent'] impression_choices = ['likeable', 'unlikeable', 'dangerous', 'annoying', 'afraid'] # Define description variables gender = random.choice(gender_choices) height = str(float('0.' + str(random.randint(1, 9))) + float(random.randint(1, 2))) if float(height) > 1.8: height_string = 'tall' if float(height) > 2: height_string = 'very tall' elif float(height) < 1.8 and float(height) > 1.5: height_string = 'average' elif float(height) < 1.5: height_string = 'short' if float(height) < 1.3: height_string = 'very short' hair = random.choice(hair_choices2) + ' ' + random.choice(hair_choices) size = random.choice(size_choices) demeanour = random.choice(demeanour_choices) impression = random.choice(impression_choices) # Collect description variables in list 'randomDescriptionVariables' randomDescriptionVariables = ['char', gender, height, height_string, hair, size, demeanour, impression] # Generate description using the 'descriptionGenerator' function descriptionGenerator(randomDescriptionVariables) # Generate the description of a character using the variables passed to the function elif descriptionVariableSize == 8: if descriptionVariables[1] == 'male': if descriptionVariables[7] != 'afraid': print """A %s man, about %s m tall. • database design help for game / user levels / progress

    - by sprugman
Sorry this got long and all prose-y. I'm creating my first truly gamified web app and could use some help thinking about how to structure the data. The Set-up Users need to accomplish tasks in each of several categories before they can move up a level. I've got my Users, Tasks, and Categories tables, and a UserTasks table which joins the three. ("User 3 has added Task 42 in Category 8. Now they've completed it.") That's all fine and working wonderfully. The Challenge I'm not sure of the best way to track the progress in the individual categories toward each level. The "business" rules are: You have to achieve a certain number of points in each category to move up. If you get the number of points needed in Cat 8, but still have other work to do to complete the level, any new Cat 8 points count toward your overall score, but don't "roll over" into the next level. The number of Categories is small (five currently) and unlikely to change often, but by no means absolutely fixed. The number of points needed to level-up will vary per level, probably by a formula, or perhaps a lookup table. So the challenge is to track each user's progress toward the next level in each category. I've thought of a few potential approaches: Possible Solutions Add a column to the users table for each category and reset them all to zero each time a user levels-up. Have a separate UserProgress table with a row for each category for each user and the number of points they have. (Basically a Many-to-Many version of #1.) Add a userLevel column to the UserTasks table and use that to derive their progress with some kind of SUM statement. Their current level will be a simple int in the User table. Pros & Cons (1) seems like by far the most straightforward, but it's also the least flexible. Perhaps I could use a naming convention based on the category ids to help overcome some of that. (With code like "select cats; for each cat, get the value from Users.progress_{cat.id}.") It's also the one where I lose the most data -- I won't know which points counted toward leveling up. I don't have a need in mind for that, so maybe I don't care about that. (2) seems complicated: every time I add or subtract a user or a category, I have to maintain the other table. I foresee synchronization challenges. (3) Is somewhere in between -- cleaner than #2, but less intuitive than #1. In order to find out where a user is, I'd have mildly complex SQL like: SELECT categoryId, SUM(points) from UserTasks WHERE userId={user.id} & countsTowardLevel={user.level} groupBy categoryId Hmm... that doesn't seem so bad. I think I'm talking myself into #3 here, but would love any input, advice or other ideas.

  • Learning HTML5 - Sample Sites

    - by Albers
Part of the challenge with HTML5 is understanding the range of different technologies and finding good samples. The following are some of the sites I have found most useful. IE TestDrive http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/ A good set of demos using touch, appcache, IndexDB, etc. Some of these only work with IE10. Be sure to click the "More Demos" link at the bottom for a longer list of Demos in a nicely organized list form. Chrome Experiments http://www.chromeexperiments.com/ Chrome browser-oriented sumbitted sites with a heavy emphasis on display technologies (WebGL & Canvas) Adobe Expressive Web http://beta.theexpressiveweb.com/ Adobe provides a dozen HTML5 & CSS3 samples. I seem to end up playing the "Breakout" style Canvas demo every time I visit the site. Mozilla Demo Studio https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/demos/tag/tech:html5/ About 100 varied HTML5-related submitted web sites. If you click the "Browse By Technology" button there are other samples for File API, IndexedDB, etc. Introducing HTML5 samples http://html5demos.com/ Specific Tech examples related to the "Introducing HTML5" book by Bruce Lawson & Remy Sharp HTML5 Gallery http://html5gallery.com/ HTML5 Gallery focuses on "real" sites - sites that were not specifically intended to showcase a particular HTML5 feature. The actual use of HTML5 tech can vary from link to link, but it is useful to see real-world uses. FaceBook Developers HTML5 Showcase http://developers.facebook.com/html5/showcase/ A good list of high profile HTML5 applications, games and demos (including the Financial Times, GMail, Kindle web reader, and Pirates Love Daisies). HTML5 Studio http://studio.html5rocks.com/ Another Google site - currently 14 samples of concepts like slideshows, Geolocation, and WebGL using HTML5.

  • Technical Article: Oracle Magazine Java Developer of the Year Adam Bien on Java EE 6 Simplicity by Design

    - by janice.heiss(at)oracle.com
Java Champion and Oracle Magazine Java Developer of the Year, Adam Bien, offers his unique perspective on how to leverage new Java EE 6 features to build simple and maintainable applications in a new article in Oracle Magazine. Bien examines different Java EE 6 architectures and design approaches in an effort to help developers build efficient, simple, and maintainable applications. From the article: "Java EE 6 consists of a set of independent APIs released together under the Java EE name. Although these APIs are independent, they fit together surprisingly well. For a given application, you could use only JavaServer Faces (JSF) 2.0, you could use Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.1 for transactional services, or you could use Contexts and Dependency Injection (CDI) with Java Persistence API (JPA) 2.0 and the Bean Validation model to implement transactions.""With a pragmatic mix of available Java EE 6 APIs, you can entirely eliminate the need to implement infrastructure services such as transactions, threading, throttling, or monitoring in your application. The real challenge is in selecting the right subset of APIs that minimizes overhead and complexity while making sure you don't have to reinvent the wheel with custom code. As a general rule, you should strive to use existing Java SE and Java EE services before expanding your search to find alternatives." Read the entire article here.

  • Agile PLM on Developing Agile PLM: Software Lifecycle Management

    - by Kerrie Foy
Change is constant.  That saying couldn’t be truer when applied to software development.   And with all that change comes extensive product complexity.  How do you manage it all?  As software developers ourselves, we can certainly empathize with the challenge. On April 3, 2012 Stephen Van Lare, VP of PLM Product Development, hosted a webcast to share how Oracle uses Agile to develop Agile – a PLM solution for managing a PLM solution!   Stephen passionately shared his unique insight based on 10 years of using Agile PLM to manage the development process, as well as customer use cases.  He shared our time-proven view of the software’s relationship to the product record, while pointing out that PLM is not source control.  He began with the challenges of software development, which boiled down to the deduction that “despite many great tools in the software development industry, it takes a lot more than good source control, more than good bug tracking, to get to an on-time, on-budget and quality release in your marketplace.   It requires defining the right things you want to do, managing the scope, managing your schedule, and, most importantly, managing the change to all those things over the lifecycle of the process. And this is the definition of PLM.”   Stephen then defined the relationship of PLM to the software development process by detailing the two main use cases –  Product Lifecycle and Mechatronics – which can be used simultaneously and in fact are already used in most industries today.  The Product Lifecycle use case is used to manage artifacts and change throughout product development, while the Mechatronics use case involves the software, hardware and electrical design in the BOM.  In essence, PLM is just as relevant to software as the rest of the BOM when trying to maximize profits during any phase of the lifecycle. Please take the opportunity to watch Stephen Van Lare as he details how and why based on his own experience developing Agile with Agile, as well as a lively Q&A session, in the Software PLM Webcast Replay.

Hi! My name is Stijn and I currently work as a Business Development Consultant for Oracle in Dublin since November 2010. I’m originally from Belgium and I graduated last year from the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. In many ways you could say I’m living the life I asked for: an international career with global organization. I’m unbelievably grateful however, because opportunities like this don’t come by the dozen. Actually, going through university and business school my dreams of an international career were clouded quite quickly. Following all the ‘right’ steps wasn’t enough. The lack of offers for, and trust in, new starters to take on a challenge like this was a reality check for me and many of my friends. It takes a company that recognizes the opportunity of recruiting talented individuals by offering them something they actually want: a first job based abroad! My job is focused on generating demand for Oracle products over the phone. In only a few months, the amazing things I’ve experienced, the people I’ve talked to, the learning experiences I’ve had in and outside of work are too many to list. From having CEO’s on the phone, to having meetings with 15 different nationalities, to getting settled from scratch in a new country… it’s something that builds you as a person. But don’t be fooled though, it’s on you - where it starts. Although Oracle gives you the best training and resources to do your job and Ireland is a playground for everything else, it’s you that is responsible. You are in control and much is expected. What you get in return however, is beyond incredible. • West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 Meeting Recap

    - by Sam Abraham
As the saying goes, it’s better late than never. Such is the case with my overdue West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 meeting report. Our August meeting was full of both knowledge and adventure. It comes as no surprise that the knowledge was brought to us by our favorite DotNetNuke Technical Evangelist, Will Strohl. Will introduced and thoroughly presented the new social features in DNN 6.2. Unfortunately, our meeting date coincided with Hurricane Isaac having just passed us by. Aside from road closures and floods that kept public schools closed for two days, our meeting host, PC Professor, had to close the school the day of our meeting on a short notice due to flooding which we found out about at midnight on the day of the event.  This left us scrambling to find an available alternate meeting location close enough to our original venue. Cancelling the meeting was always an option, but we opted to keep it as the very last resort. Luckily, we were fortunate to find a meeting room at the Hampton Inn only a few minutes away from our original location. Having heard of our challenge, our event sponsor, Applied Innovations, stepped-in and covered the meeting room cost in addition to the food and beverages. We would like to thank our volunteers and sponsors who made that event a success: Jess Coburn, CEO and Cara Pluff, Director of Sales at Applied Innovations, Dave Noderer for suggesting the alternate venue and Venkat Subramanian for his hard work keeping our members informed of the venue change and for being our event photographer.   We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings: -September 25th, 2012 with Jonas Stawski, Microsoft MVP -October 23rd, 2012 with our Microsoft Developer Evangelist, Joe “DevFish” Healy -Ending an exciting year will be our November 27th meeting with Dycom Industries’ Senior Software Developer, Tom Huynh.   All the best, --Sam

  • New Trusted Status awarded to first Mobile Java Developer

    - by Jacob Lehrbaum
Java Verified has just announced that GameLoft is the first developer to receive its new Trusted Status!  Java Verified is an industry-recognized Java testing and signing program backed and funded by companies such as AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Orange, Samsung and Vodafone, and chartered with making it easier for mobile developers to certify and deploy applications for use across the billions of mobile handsets that run the Java ME.  Because of its breadth and diversity, Java ME provides an unmatched opportunity to reach more than 3 billions consumers, but at the same time, developers are faced with the challenge of working with multiple distribution channels and a range of handsets. To this end, the Java Verified program provides a suite of tests that help to validate identity, functionality, integrity, and quality.  Since its rebirth in 2010 as an independent organization, the Java Verified program has been actively working to make it even easier to create and distribute Java ME apps.  Example initiatives include updates to the Unified Testing Criteria to make it easier to test "Simple Apps," community outreach to better understand and address developer pain-points  and a new "Trusted Status."  In the words of the Java Verified Program, Trusted Status is:a privileged status to be granted to developers who will have proven that the quality of their Java ME apps is of a consistently high standard. These are developers who will have earned the trust of Java Verified by demonstrating unfailingly that testing to the UTC standard is a crucial part of their product development activityThe first developer to be awarded this status is GameLoft.  By achieving Trusted Status Gameloft can now test their applications to the Java Verified standard without needing to provide Java Verified with the evidence.  The apps then automatically get signed with the Java Verified signature enabling GameLoft to benefit from reduced costs and time-to-market for their new Java ME applications from here on out.  Learn more about the exciting news or apply now for Trusted Status!

  • Expanding the Oracle Enterprise Repository with functional documentation by Marc Kuijpers

    - by JuergenKress
Introduction Have you ever experienced the challenge to map both your functional and technical assets in one software package? Finding a software package that is able to describe the metadata about these assets and their mutual relationships? And if you found the correct software package, was it maintainable? The Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) is a powerful SOA repository. Its core task is to map and visualize the interaction between technical assets generated by the SOA Suite and OSB. However, OER can be configured to not only contain these technical assets, but also to contain functional assets, i.e.: functional designs, use cases and a logical data model. Now that’s interesting! OER is able to show all the assets in your system and, if necessary, zoom in on one of the assets and their mutual relationships (Figure 1). This opens a set of doors to powerful features, e.g.: Impact analsysis If a functional design is adjusted, which other functional designs and use cases do I need to adjust? Traceability If a web service generates an error, in which functional and technical designs is the web service described This sounds great, but how do we get all the functional and technical documents in OER, and how are we going to keep this repository up-to-date? • 30 in 60 Contest | Standings Update

    - by Staff of Geeks
The contest has definitely ended the first week with a clear leader.  One of our new bloggers, Enrique Lima, has posted 20 times since the beginning of the contest with some great content on Team Foundation Server.  Another noticeable face we see on the leader board is Chris Williams who is making headway.  Chris, are you going to challenge up D’Arcy Lussier for the lead position on GWB again, notice who isn’t on this list :D.  Also, Chris House who is a new blogger is making some strong strides.  And finally, let us not forget Dave Campbell who writes Silverlight Cream who always has great content for us.  We hope to see more names joining this list soon, what else could be better than a world full of Geekswithblogs.net custom shirts?   Current Leader Board: Enrique Lima (20 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/enriquelima Eric Nelson (7 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/iupdateable Christopher House (7 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/13DaysaWeek StuartBrierley (7 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/StuartBrierley Dave Campbell (6 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/WynApseTechnicalMusings Chris Williams (5 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/cwilliams Frez (4 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/Frez MarkPearl (4 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/MarkPearl mbcrump (4 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/mbcrump Rajesh Charagandla (3 posts) - http://geekswithblogs.net/crajesh Technorati Tags: 30 in 60,Geekswithblogs,Standings

  • SQL SERVER – Copy Statistics from One Server to Another Server

    - by pinaldave
I was recently working on a performance tuning project in Dubai (yeah I was able to see the tallest tower from the window of my work place). I had a very interesting learning experience there. There was a situation where we wanted to receive the schema of original database from a certain client. However, the client was not able to provide us any data due to privacy issues. The schema was very important because without having an access to underlying data, it was a bit difficult to judge the queries etc. For example, without any primary data, all the queries are running in 0 (zero) milliseconds and all were using nested loop as there were no data to be returned. Even though we had CPU offending queries, they were not doing anything without the data in the tables. This was really a challenge as I did not have access to production server data and I could not recreate the scenarios as production without data. Well, I was confused but Ruben from Solid Quality Mentors, Spain taught me new tricks. He suggested that when table schema is generated, we can create the statistics consequently. Here is how we had done that: Once statistics is created along with the schema, without data in the table, all the queries will work as how they will work on production server. This way, without access to the data, we were able to recreate the same scenario as production server on development server. When observed at the script, you will find that the statistics were also generated along with the query. You will find statistics included in WITH STATS_STREAM clause. What a very simple and effective script. • The Social Business Thought Leaders - John Hagel

    - by kellsey.ruppel
While many European economies are on the brink of a recession between increasing taxation and mounting loss of jobs and bankruptcy filing rates, there's an understandable risk of losing sight of the deeper forces at play. Yet instead of surrendering to uncertainty and trying to survive in the short term, many organizations are feeling the urge to be better prepared to thrive in these complex times by developing a more articulated long term understanding of both the opportunities / challenges ahead. For example: What long-term economic, technological and societal changes are rolling out? Which foundational dynamics will affect our companies' performance, productivity, competition, and innovative potential in the upcoming decades? How will digital infrastructure change our business landscape? What kind of capabilities will be key to compete in a market shaped by growing turbulence, unpredictability and volatility? Breaking out from a strictly cyclical thinking, studies such as the Shift Index by John Hagel, Co-Chairman of the Center for the Edge at Deloitte & Touche (See Measuring the forces of long-term change - The 2009 Shift Index), depict a worrying performance challenge that affected every industry in the entire US economy over the last 45 years. Amidst a more than doubled competitive intensity of the market, and even with an improved labor productivity, the actual performance of US firms has consistently fallen to 25% of what it was in 1965. Most of this reported value is shifting from institutions and organizations to individuals, whether they are customers or young creative talent. To thrive in the digital economy and reverse declining performance trends, companies will have to fundamentally rethink their management approach by moving from knowledge stocks to knowledge flows, from scalable efficiency to scalable learning, from push organizations to pull organizations. Based on the outcomes of the Shift Index and on the book The Power of Pull, the first episode of the Social Business Thought-Leaders features John Hagel to provide strategic insights on how companies will succeed in the 21st century.
