• Gnome Shell segfault in libglib-2.0

  I have been using Ubuntu 11.10 + Gnome Shell with a Nvidia card, but now I've moved it to my new PC which has an ATI card, at first it wasn't booting but I installed the driver from amd.com and then it worked. Anyway my problem is that gnome-shell is crashing, mostly when I try to start a VirtualBox machine (it happened in other times but I don't remember what I was doing). Sometimes gnome-shell respawns and it continue working but sometimes it doesn't so I have to restart lightdm and lose all the windows I was using. • How can I access one desktop session from another on the same machine?

  I want to run a desktop session as user A, and from that session access a different desktop session as user B. This way I can test, screencast or share my screen from session B, while having access to apps/resources in session A that I do not want running/visible in session B. What application can I do this with? I assume some kind of a remote desktop client/server is what I'm looking for. So far I have tried: VNC. Logged in as user A and user B. In session B run Desktop Sharing. Switched to session A. Tried to access share with Remmina. Failed. (Can get image to appear but it's frozen.) x2go. Installed server and client from stable PPA (needed a workaround for installation to succeed). Created a connection which starts then fails instantly. Discovered mailing list post suggesting that accessing localhost is not supported. On the non-remote front: VirtualBox. Created a minimal virtual machine for session B. Too resource heavy. Am I attempting the impossible? Should I be looking for something other than a remote desktop tool?

  I am a Java Web Application Developer. I have an idea for a web application project that I am working on. I personally believe that the app has potential to become a popular website. Currently I am working on it as a developer with two others in the project. The development costs has been almost null uptil now since we are doing in-house development with open source technologies. But the costs are now going to appear as we'll have to host our application online on the servers. Right now I see this as the major expense as we go live. Are there any ways by which we can smartly deal with this hurdle ? We want to minimize the costs as much as possible, or even better, if we can make this null, perhaps, through some partnership agreement with the hosting solutions provider!? • How to use RDP protocol in Remote Desktop Viewer?

  I am using a Natty Live-USB, and the Remote Desktop Viewer application (Applications - Internet - Remote Desktop Viewer) only shows SSH & VNC protocols. How can I include RDP in the list, in order to connect to existing Windows Remote Desktop sessions on Windows XP machines. I am aware that I can use the gnome-rdp application, or even rdesktop hostname from a terminal, but I would like to create a persistent LiveUSB that uses Remote Desktop Viewer to connect to Windows RDP (port 3389). I do not want to set up VNC, TeamViewer or any others, as these do not solve my problem due to the fact they need additional software on the remote hosts.

  I am doing research on assembling a team, using the right tools, and the cost to develop a highly responsive social network that is capable of dealing with a lot of users. Similar to the Facebook concept but using the basics package for now. Profile, friends, posts, updates, media upload/download, streaming, chat and Inbox messaging are all in the package. We certainly do not expect it to be as popular as Facebook or handle the same number of users and requests, but in its own game it has to be a monster, and expandable for later on. Neglecting the hosting, and servers part, i am looking for technical advise and opinions, on what kind of team i need ? how many developers ? their expertise ? What are the right tools ? languages ? frameworks ? environments ? Any random ideas about the infrastructure ? Quick thoughts on the development process ? • Compiz: How can I pin osd-lyrics to the Desktop?

  Hey ya, I have certain applications pinned to my desktop. such as Rainlendar (1), which offers this option in the settings window conky (2), with "own_window_type normal" in my ~/.conkyrc Rhythmbox's Desktop Cover Art plugin (3), a python plugin sticked to the desktop. They all hide nicely below all other Windows. I set Compiz to not minimize them on "show desktop" command using "window rules". I also use [osd-lyrics][1] to display music lyrics. It's default behaviour is to stick always on top, which is irritating sometimes and, in my case, looks rather fugly. (4) See screenshot at: http://i.imgur.com/ie16K.jpg Now how can I tell Compiz to pin the osd-lyrics bar to the desktop below all other windows and not minimize it? I tried all sorts of window rules and exceptions, e.g. using "class=osd-lyrics", "title=osd-lyrics" but the OSD doesn't seem to match any of these. Any ideas? • Why won't Remmina connect to Windows 7 Remote Desktop?

  I'm using Ubuntu and I'm trying to connect to another machine in a different network using remote desktop. In Windows7 I have made the following in order to activate remote desktop: I've gone to computer - properties - remote settings I've selected the option: "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop I've opened "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" In inbound rules I've enabled the rules for remote desktop (public and domain) I have also installed Remmina in the Ubuntu machine. For configuring it I did the following steps: Selected the RDP protocol In the server input I have written the Windows machine public IP. In username / password I have typed my login credentials (the same as my Windows admin account) But when I try to connect I get this error message: "Unable to connect to RDP server 89.130.251.160" If I ping my Windows7 machine, I have a correct response. Any suggestions?

  I've used click install and click register to install a click app on Ubuntu (not Ubuntu Touch). The version was 0.5.1. Now, a new version (v0.5.6) is available and I installed it using the same method. • Dynamic quicklist: how to reference to .desktop file? (installed in /opt)

  I'm trying to create a dynamic quicklist for an application I'm developing in quickly. This is the line of code I use to try and connect to the .desktop file: self.launcher = Unity.LauncherEntry.get_for_desktop_id("my-app.desktop") For testing purposes, I've found that when using quickly run I should copy the .desktop file to ~/.local/share/applications. When I do this, the quicklist shows up correctly. However, when packaging my app using quickly package --extras, and installing this package, I get a launcher without quicklist. Does this have something to do with my app being installed in /opt? Meaning my desktop file is located somewhere else? Should I use another reference to the desktop file?

• Development on Windows 7; Web server on Linux - How to share Apache web root?

  I've got a LAMP server that I want to use as a local web server. I've got a Windows 7 machine that I want to use as my development machine. The machines will be on the same LAN (or the Windows box will be VPNed into the LAN). My questions is, what is the best way of sharing the web root of the LAMP server so that I can edit the files on the remote Windows 7 machine and how do I go about configuring this on the Linux machine? (Fedora 16) I would like the solution to be as easy to use as possible with preferably no extra steps required to save/edit/upload files from my IDE on my Windows 7 machine. I'm thinking either a Samba or NFS share are the way to go but I'm concerned I'm going to run into issues with permissions and unix/windows file handling. Is one better than ther other for my use case or is there a better alternative solution? I'm currently using Windows 7 Professional which doesn't have NFS support but would upgrade to Ultimate which does have NFS support if it's the best solution.

This question is not asking about privacy or constitutionality, but about how this act will impact developers' business models and development strategies. When the post was made I was reminded of Jeff's November blog post regarding an internet driver's license. Whether that is a perfect model or not, both approaches are attempting to handle a shared problem (of both developers and end users): How do we establish an online identity? The question I ask here is, with respect to the various burdens that would be imposed on developers and users, what are some of the major, foreseeable implementation issues that will arise from the current U.S. Government's proposed solution? For a quick primer on the setup, jump to page 12 for infrastructure components, here are two stand-outs: An Identity Provider (IDP) is responsible for the processes associated with enrolling a subject, and establishing and maintaining the digital identity associated with an individual or NPE. These processes include identity vetting and proofing, as well as revocation, suspension, and recovery of the digital identity. The IDP is responsible for issuing a credential, the information object or device used during a transaction to provide evidence of the subject’s identity; it may also provide linkage to authority, roles, rights, privileges, and other attributes. The credential can be stored on an identity medium, which is a device or object (physical or virtual) used for storing one or more credentials, claims, or attributes related to a subject. Identity media are widely available in many formats, such as smart cards, security chips embedded in PCs, cell phones, software based certificates, and USB devices. Selection of the appropriate credential is implementation specific and dependent on the risk tolerance of the participating entities. • Remote Desktop Session Black after Minimize

  PROBLEM: When I minimize a remote desktop session and restore it, the remote desktop screen shows up black. This only happens when connecting to a particular computer. DETAILS: If I start clicking around in the black area, portions of the screen will start redrawing and showing up correctly. For example, if I leave a window open in the remote session and click where that window is located on the remote computer, then that window--and only that window--will redraw, and sometimes a portion of that window won't redraw (usually the toolbar). And to clarify--the window only has to be minimized momentarily, so it doesn't seem to be a timeout issue. Clicking or typing in the remote session still causes the remote computer to respond appropriately. Disconnecting from the session and reconnecting restores the whole screen image, as does clicking all over the place in the black image (causing each section to redraw). CONFIGURATION: This problem only happens for me when connecting to a particular computer (a W2K Server box configured to allow remote administration) and only with certain client computers. I've tried 7 different client computers with various versions of Remote Desktop (the OSes were: Win2K, Server 2003, Server 2008, Windows 7 RC, 3 XP) and two of them exhibit the problem (one is one of the XP boxes and the other is Windows 7). Those same computers can RDP to other computers without problem. RESOLUTION ATTEMPTS: I have tried the following: Disable the LOCAL screen saver as mentioned on Technet Turned off bitmap caching in the client, as mentioned on many forums. Updated to version 6.1 of the remote desktop client Using mRemote (I doubted this would work since it uses MS's code for connecting to RDP servers) Turning off all video acceleration. QUESTION: Any ideas on what is causing this?

• Remote Desktop Network Level Authentication Not Supported

  I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3 x86, trying to connect to a system with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64. Recently, I updated the Remote Desktop Connection software on the XP system in hopes of using Network Level Authentication (NLA) for my connections to the Windows 7 box. After the update, I connected to the Windows 7 box over RDP and enabled NLA believing that the updated client should support it. After disconnecting and attempting to reconnect, I'm presented with the following error: The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support. So, I checked the About page in Remote Desktop Connection to make sure the update had applied. This is what I see. Remote Desktop Connection Shell Version 6.1.7600 Control Version 6.1.7600 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Network Level Authentication not supported. Remote Desktop Protocol 7.0 supported. I thought NLA was supposed to be a part of RDP 7.0 clients. Is there a component I'm missing somewhere?

• Netbook thinks it is a desktop

  Question: Are, and if so what, there packages for download that I can get netbook to understand it is not a desktop and that it is a netbook. Info: I'm running an Acer Aspire One with ubuntu desktop 9.10. I tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix first but it has graphics issues with the aspire one. So I changed to Ubuntu Desktop. It was the only distro (after debian, centOS, Fedora, and Knoppix all failed me) that I managed to get working. The only thing is that it is having issues doing things that a netbook/laptop should be doing. most notably is that it will run it's battery dead if I close the screen and throw it into my back pack. It seems to just stay fully on and runs it's self to death. also it will lock up some times if I close the screen and come back to it 10 or 20 minutes later. It also won't retain volume settings when I reboot, as well as screen brightness. and just a couple of other things that I can't quite put my finger on, but just seem amiss. like I said, Essentially my netbook thinks it is a desktop, how can I fix this? ~N

• Remote assistance from Remote Desktop sessions: unable to control

  Since Remote Control (aka Session Shadowing) is gone for good in Server 2012 Remote Desktop Session hosts, I am looking for a replacement to support users in a cross-domain environment. Since Remote Assistance is supposed to work for Remote Desktop Sessions as well, I tried leveraging that for support purposes by enabling unsolicited remote assistance for all Remote Desktop Session Hosts via Group Policy. All seems to be working well except that the "expert" seems to be unable to actually excercise any mouse or keyboard control when the remote assistance session has been initiated from a Remote Desktop session itself. Mouse clicks and keyboard strokes from the "expert" session (Server 2012) seem to simply be ignored even after the assisted user has acknowledged the request for control. I would like to see this working through RD sessions for the support staff due to a number of reasons: not every support agent would have the appropriate client system version to support users on a specific terminal server (e.g. an agent might have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 station and thus be unable to offer assistance to users on Server 2012 RDSHs) a support agent would not necessarily have a station which is a member of the specific destination domain (mainly due to the reason that more than a single domain's users are supported) what am I missing?

• Remote Desktop fails after VPN connection

  The local computer (comp 1) is connected to a remote computer (comp 2) with Remote Desktop. On the remote computer (comp 2), I try to establish an VPN connection to a different remote computer (comp 3). Once I try to establish the VPN connection from the remote computer (comp 2) to the second remote computer (comp 3), Remote Desktop freezes on comp 1. It is not possible to connect to comp 2 again via Remote Desktop. What can be done to connect to this remote computer (comp 2) after it establishes a VPN connection? The only thing that comes to my mind is to install a second NIC and configure Remote Desktop to accept connection from this NIC while VPN is working from the other... What do you suggest? EDIT: I want to use the internet connection of the VPN, so all traffic should go over the VPN but still RDP working. My IP: 100.0.0.1 The IP where I'm connecting via RDP: 200.0.0.20 (Mask: 255.255.255.192, Gateway: 200.0.0.193) Where the 200.0.0.1 connects to VPN the IP of the VPN is: 65.254.61.250 Will routing like this help (Command is issued in 200.0.0.20, the RDP location): route ADD 65.254.61.250 MASK 255.255.255.192 200.0.0.193 Couldn't add gives the error: The route addition failed: The parameter is incorrect. • Remote Desktop leaves host unresponsive

  I have my desktop PC at home set up to accept remote connections, and I often connect to it from work on my laptop via mstsc.exe. However, every time I remote to it, I find when I go home that despite the monitor being on - it's not receiving an image and it looks as though the computer is hibernating/asleep. I basically have to restart it whenever I get home and I know there's an answer for why its doing this. More details: When exiting the remote session, I have tried both logging off the account, and closing the RDP window without logging off; both give the same result. When I get home to the desktop I of course try moving the mouse, ctrl+alt+del to see if its responsive to restart, multiple key-press to see if I can get any audio out of it; It seems pretty obvious its sleeping/hibernating in some way: Nothing happens in any of these cases and a physical restart is necessary. Both desktop and laptop are running Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm thinking it really is sleeping/hibernating it, and I'm not sure why because left alone my desktop's power options are set to never turn off the HDD or change its state - I leave it on 24/7. This could be a stupid error on my part but I just can't see it! Thanks.

• Connect from Mac OS X to Windows 7 Desktop

  I am trying to connect from my MacBook to my Windows 7 machine within my own network - if it will work from outside my network that's a plus but no need to have. My Windows 7 machine is freshly installed with Windows 7 Home Premium. It runs the built-in firewall with no settings changed so far as well as Microsoft Security Essentials. So far I tried CoRD and Microsofts Remote Desktop Connections to connect from my Mac to my Windows machine without any success. I did try and disabled the firewall on my Windows machine but could not connect either. The reason I did this was to check wether there is a Windows firewall setting preventing me from connecting. On top of that I manually started the Remote Desktop Services and Remote Desktop Configuration within services.msc. Is there anything else I have to enable for a remote desktop connection? Could there be any router setting I have to tweak? Since I do not want to connect from outside my own network I thought I don't have to do any port forwarding. The error messages I retrieve are all connection timeouts. I can however ping the hostname and/or IP address. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot, jrn
