• Switching from web to desktop development

  Being a web developer (php, symfony, doctrine) for 2 years now, I was recently asked by a friend to come up with a desktop solution. So I developed a project, installed a LAMP on his machine and he is mostly happy using it now. But I'm not. It just doesn't seem right to wait for a server response from a localhost. Obviously php isn't suited for desktop development. So, my question is: what language \ framework would you advice a php programmer if he was going to develop a desktop application (something that you can install, that has it's own gui, but utilizes the similar concepts of web apps: css, javascript, orm). I would like to bring up Python as a possible answer to my question. Does anyone have an experience of developing a desktop app with Python, utilizing an ORM and(or) HTML-based GUI?

Now I'm trying to create fixtures for this two tables, and I can't make Doctrine to load them. It gives me this error: SQLSTATE[23000]: Integrity constraint violation: 1452 Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails (eat/alumno__beca, CONSTRAINT alumno__beca_persona_id_alumno_id FOREIGN KEY (persona_id) REFERENCES alumno (id) ON DELETE CASCADE) Does someone know how to write a fixture for a table inherited from another? How can i prevent this? Any suggestion....

  I'm using Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine. My application's backend was built using Symfony's admin generator. It works great when I want to display basic stuff. But tehre's not a lot of documentation on how to enhance it and add new pages. Let's take an example: I want to list published items on one page and to-be-published items on another one. I've used several ways to that in my application but can't figure out what the best way is: playing with filters and then modify templates depending on where you are? creating another module calling a different table_method? some other technique I don't know about? What's the best practice here? How do you guys usually do to customize your admin?

• Zend_Form validation problem

  I am having problems getting validation to work for a form built using Zend_Form. The idea is this: I have two dropdown. One is a list of players. The other is a list of free agents who play the same position as the player. I am using an onChange javascript callback to run some Ajax code that replaces the free agent list dropdown with a new one at the position of the player they've selected from the player dropdown. Now, perhaps this is the wrong way, but I built the form by creating an instance of Zend_Form and then creating all these setX methods that add elements to the form. My reasoning was that I wanted to display certain elements in specific places on the page, not just output $this-form on my template. The problem appears to be when I get the form post back, the validator seems to not know about the validation rule I set up for the free agent drop down. Here's some relevant code to look at. I'm a relative ZF n00b so feel free to tell me I am not doing things the ZF way if it leaps out at you. I use the following css... .page-numbers a { color:#808185; cursor:pointer; text-decoration:none;outline:none; } .page-numbers a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } .page-numbers a:visited { color:#808185;outline:none; } But my anchor tag doesn't seem to take the css above instead it uses the css below, a { color:#0077CC; cursor:pointer; text-decoration:none;outline:none; } a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } a:visited { color:#4A6B82;outline:none; } Which i have given in the top of my stylesheet... Any suggestion...

The question is: which libraries/frameworks do you use in your current ZF-based project? what are the best practices for ZF-based project architecture? I don't mean any components that are already a part of ZF. Please give a description of aditional frameworks you have integrated (like RuckUsing, Smarty, or Doctrine). It also applies to any GUI frameworks (perhaps you use a CSS framework), as well as JS frameworks (not just jQuery or prototype, but rather some advanced structures). • Problem Paging with Post Action in ASP.NET MVC

  I have a page that takes a number of parameters on a form and posts them to an action. It returns a number of search results that need to be paged through. My pager uses ActionLink; <%= Html.ActionLink(i.ToString(), "Basic", new { page = (i - 1) })%> The results comeback as expected but when I click on page two it goes to the default Action, not the one marked with post. The form values do no get submitted again and the results that are shown for page two are the default results not filters with the parameters. I am not sure how to solve this problem? One way was to save the form values into the database on the post and reading them back on the default action but it seems overkill. Thank You!

  Using the Business Application template from the brand new released RIA Services, you can see lots of examples using the data grid on top of a DomainDataSource in combination with a DataPager. The properties PageSize and LoadSize can be used to adjust the amount of data to be displayed in one page and the data that is prefetched in the background. Now I'd like to have a data grid with a scrollbar and no pager. The underlying DomainDataSource should load only the data that is diplayed in the grid. It should trigger another load, when the user scrolls down to items that are not yet in the data context. Is there any sample implementation how to do this?

• Injecting dependency into entity repository

  Is there a simple way to inject a dependency into every repository instance in Doctrine2 ? I have tried listening to the loadClassMetadata event and using setter injection on the repository but this naturally resulted in a infinite loop as calling getRepository in the event triggered the same event. • [Zend Framework] Is there any way to use more than 1 bootstrap class?

  It should sound workaround or something like, but I'll tell you what: I chose to have a separated "project" with every library I could use. It's like a global library which I included Zend library, Doctrine ORM, JQuery, Blueprint CSS, etc. Then I set the include path. Nothing wrong. The problem is: I'd like to have also a global bootstrap class inside the library folder and an individual bootstrap class on each project I create for individual use. I don't know how to set more than 1 bootstrap class. Is it possible?

• ASP.net repeater, scroll 3 at a time

  I have a list of data that I need to display in a web page 3 at a time The first needs to be displayed in a div called "left" , the second in a div called "centre" and the third in a div called "right". And I need to be able to scroll through the data with a pager. And so the next 3 results will be displayed in a similar way, and so on till the end of the data set Obviously the alternating templates in the repeater are not suitable for this. Is there a smarter way to achieve this?

• MVC without ORM is not real MVC?

  at the moment im integrating ORM (doctrine) into a MVC framework (codeigniter). then it hit me that this was the obvious way of setting up a MVC: the controller calls the models that are representing database tables. look at this picture: MVC + ORM then i wondered, how can a MVC without ORM be real MVC? cause then the models are not real objects, rather aggregations of different functions that perform CRUD, then returning the result to the controller. and there is no need for a state (object properties) i guess so the functions would be all static? correct me if im wrong on this one. i guess a lot of people are using models without ORM. please share your thoughts. how do your models look like?

• Combine two views into one view

  I have two views that I would like to combine into one. The first view shows all items of X where company ID = Y. This is to give preferential sort to the client first, and then everyone else. So I created a second view, all items of X, where company ID != Y. I created it as an Attachment to attach to the first view, but I don't think I got the intended result. How can I combine these views so the first view results are listed first, and then the second view is too, using the same pager, filters, and arguments? Is there any way of achieving this without programming it?

• Django paging object has issues with Postgresql QuerySets

  I have some django code that runs fine on a SQLite database or on a MySQL database, but it runs into problems with Postgres, and it's making me crazy that no one has has this issue before. I think it may also be related to the way querysets are evaluated by the pager. In a view I have: def index(request, page=1): latest_posts = Post.objects.all().order_by('-pub_date') paginator = Paginator(latest_posts, 5) try: posts = paginator.page(page) except (EmptyPage, InvalidPage): posts = paginator.page(paginator.num_pages) return render_to_response('blog/index.html', {'posts' : posts}) And inside the template: {% for post in posts.object_list %} {# some rendering jazz #} {% endfor %} This works fine with SQLite, but Postgres gives me: Caught TypeError while rendering: 'NoneType' object is not callable To further complicate things, when I switch the Queryset call to: latest_posts = Post.objects.all() Everything works great. I've tried re-reading the documentation, but found nothing, although I admit I'm a bit clouded by frustration at this point. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

  i have noticed that every area has some tools you can use to make things easier. eg. css = dreamweaver doctrine/propel = orm designer // you dont have to hardcore code schemas manually and remembering all the syntax/variables mysql = mysql workbench // the same etc. in this way you get aided and dont have to type things the hard way, and can learn the structure, but then use GUI tools to help you develop faster. now i'm learning design patterns (singleton, factory, command, memento etc) and im wondering if there are some kind of tools you can use that will help you develop faster. i dont know exactly what tools i'm trying to find, just helping me when coding with design patterns (schema drawings? references?) are there any?

• Problem with sfDoctrineGuardPlugin in symfony: Not working on linux

  I have a symfony project with symfony V1.4.2 and doctrine 1.2.2. I have installed sfDoctrineGuardPlugin-4.0.1 and used to authenticate user from external method. Everything going fine, the authentication is perfect on windows machine but whenever I take this to linux machine, the login does not work. It keeps sayting "Invalid username or password". Can anyone help me, what is going wrong. If I have problem in system, then it should not work in windows either but its working perfectly in windows but not in linux. Thanks in advance

Views id timestamp project_id user_id page_id Comments id timestamp project_id user_id page_id comment Pages id project_id title Now pages are related to projects: Projects id account_id title I am trying to create a summary page that combines views and comments ordered by time (so that the most recent views/comments are at the beginning, grouped by projects. Also, only projects for a specific account. So the result could potentially be: Project 1 View 5 (June 20th) View 4 (June 18th) Comment 5 (June 15th) Comment 4 (June 14th) Comment 3 (June 12th) Project 3 View 3 (June 10th) View 2 (June 8th) Comment 2 (June 7th) Project 2 View 1 (June 5th) Comment 1 (June 4th) If you could help with how to do this using SQL (or even doctrine) that would be awesome.
